Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp for a copy of "Two Wicked Desserts" in exchange for my honest review.
This is the second exciting story in the Kitchen Witch series which is set in Magic Springs, Idaho. We have met Mia Malone - the owner of Mia's Morsels, her grandmother Mary Alice Carpenter, Mr. Darcy - Mia's cat and familiar who just so happens to be sporting the spirit of Dorian Alexander her Gran's former beau, who was killed by a rival coven leader, Christina - the sister of Mia's former boyfriend and her helper/roommate, Trent and Levi Majors, and Police Detective Mark Baldwin.
Mia purchased an old school house saving it from being torn down and turned into a strip mall. This angered local real estate mogul John Louis who has been pressuring several businesses in town to sell so that he can bring in bigger stores. He has Mia firmly is his sights and has spent time in prison for previously holding a gun on her. He is spreading it around town that Mia is closing up her shop and moving away. As Mia depends on take-away orders to keep her cooking school going, she spends a lot of the story clearing up the rumours and trying to find out what John Louis is up to.
Mia has this ability to attract danger and people often get murdered around her. This time is no different when a body is found in the backyard of Mia's Morsels. Mia immediately suspects John Louis but also Gran's guest Cindy who is the daughter of Dorian. We learn a lot more about the house in this story and stories from the past.
These stories while they are wonderful on their own, they are best read in order because there is a lot of character development in each book and the stories link back to previous books. While this is the second full story, there are two novellas before this one as well. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series to see what happens to the school house and Mia.
This is the second in the series of the Kitchen Witch Mysteries by Lynn Cahoon. Mia finds a body in her backyard, Cindy, Dorian’s daughter is staying in her home as well as her grandmother, and Christina. She wants to know who the dead person is and who killed him.
Threats from John Louis through rumors she is going out of business add to her stress levels.
We find out more of family history and locals in the town. It took me a while to accept Cindy, she was so self-centered and rude.
I am enjoying the magical history lessons on grimoires and how they are passed down. There is still a lot to be uncovered such as the secret Mary Alice Carpenter, aka Grans is keeping. The ghosts associated with the new found library/storage room, and the relationships still developing with Trent, Christina, and Levi.
I found the ending of this story to be unfulfilling but it does indicate more issues with John Louis in the future. I’m hoping Dorian and Mr. Darcy can be safely separated in the future.
I was given an ARC e-book copy from Netgalley. I am not required to leave a positive review.
I love that this series is set in Idaho as it highlights one of my favorite areas of the country. This series has the best characters that are warm and engaging to draw you in and make you want to keep reading about them. Sprinkle in a little magic and great food wrapped up in an intriguing plot and you have the perfect entertaining read to keep you turning pages delightfully for hours! Reading the previous books in the series will definitely increase your enjoyment time as well as filling in the backstory of several characters so I do recommend that you read the other books, but you could enjoy this as a stand alone and not be lost. I can't wait to see what happens to Mia and her pals next!
This was such a nail biter of a page turner. A great read. I loved the book. I really enjoyed the book. Will definitely recommend this book.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is the second book in the Kitchen Witch Mystery series. I really enjoyed the first book, and I like this one even more. Lynn Cahoon is a great writer, her books are fun and interesting to read. I love the “witchy” aspects of the story. I highly recommend this book.
The Kitchen Witch Mysteries is Lynn Cahoon's latest cozy mystery series, this time with a magical twist. At first, I hesitantly chose not to jump on this one because I tend not to love fantasy-type books... but the author is one of my usual go-to writers for cozies... so I decided to give it a chance this spring. Two Wicked Desserts is the latest, and I've finished reading the previous intro novel and the the two in-between shorter, novellas. A third in-between novel is set to release this summer too, as well as two new series by the author in the latter part of the year. Wow, she's prolific.
I do like the series, including the premise. While Mia is a witch, it's a very small piece of the story... though it's starting to heat up. That said, it's actually been intriguing to learn about her family's roots in the magical world, and there hasn't been any magic performed to date. A few things are spoken about off-scene, yet the setting is grounded in strong realistic roots... the end result means I could easily connect with it and will definitely keep up to date with the series. In this caper, Mia finds a dead body in her backyard, and the threats from John Louis keep coming. When the daughter of her grandmother's recently murdered beau (from the first book) shows up to collect her father's spell book, things get strange.
The plot has several potential suspects and side stories. New bestie Christina is doing well but she's a bit flighty. I like the maturity between books in her personality, tho. Grans is a hoot. And Trent is a solid boyfriend for Mia. The cast has lots of potential, and I daresay I want to see some magic begin to happen. The catering business and art school conversion that Mia have been focusing on also brings a lot to the story, and I can see it becoming an integral part of the town. These aspects of Magic Springs make me wants to visit Idaho, a state still on my bucket list. (I've been to 40 so far). The only small letdown was the ending this time; we know who the murderer is, but it's not entirely proven and didn't have a big culmination scene. That said, changing things up from time to time is also a good tool in an author's toolbox.
If you enjoy balanced cozies with a bit of magic and some artsy settings, you will like this one. I'm still a bigger fan of her other series, but Cahoon is talented... 6 or 7 different series all at once, wow! I'm impressed.
I am such a Lynn Cahoon fan in her other series offerings, but I can't get into her A Kitchen Witch Mystery series. I just find it creepy. Praying to the Goddess, a cackling doll and an eerie house. There was so much unresolved in the 'conclusion' of 'Two Wicket Desserts' that I have no desire to continue. I'm sorry to say this and wish the author would concentrate on her Tourist Trap and Cat Lattimore books.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own. +-
I really enjoyed Two Wicked Desserts. It was a fun, quick read. In fact, if you are in the mood for a great cozy mystery, I highly recommend anything by Lynn Cahoon! I have enjoyed all of series and I'm looking forward to spending more time with Mia in her next Kitchen Witch book!
I knew I would love this series from the moment I saw the phrase "kitchen witch." It's so much fun and manages to give a fresh spin on the witchy cozy trope.
This is the second book in the Kitchen Witch series. Mia Malone is just getting her catering business started with the help of her ex boyfriends' sister, Christina, while still learning witchcraft from her grandmother. A dead body is found in Mia's backyard. She starts investigating when she realizes that there is a connection to the dead man and her houseguest, Cindy. I loved catching up with Mia, Mary Alice, Christina, and Trent and Levi. They are all very well developed characters. I love that Mia is what is known as a kitchen witch. I like the blossoming relationship between Trent and Mia, as well as Christina and Levi. The mystery was well done. There were plenty of twists to keep you guessing. I can't wait to continue with this series.
Mia Malone is working hard to get her cooking school/ catering business off to a good start when a body is found at the back of her property. The body turns out to be a hitman, and the only connection that can be found is a witch who is staying with Mia and grandmother. Was the hitman going to kill her or was there another reason that he was there?
This s a fun new series by one of my favorite authors. The magical elements are entertaining and the characters are delightful!
I love cozy mysteries that incorporate unusual and mystical elements, and so this one was perfect for me! The tale of Cindy, a prime suspect in a murder case and also a descendant of a warlock had me enthralled!
I received a copy of Two Wicked Desserts through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Two Wicked Desserts is the second mystery in the Kitchen Witch Mysteries series. In this installation, Mia Malone, who is starting up a new catering business in Magic Springs, winds up with a body in her backyard. When the police aren’t on the right track, Mis takes it upon herself to help find the killer.
Overall this was a good read with fun characters, a quaint town and a bit of magic, but the ending felt a little anticlimactic to me. I was waiting for this big reveal of who the killer was and feel like I was left hanging. All in all, it was a good mystery read, but not my favorite mystery I’ve ever read. It’s worth giving this series a try though.
Two Wicked Desserts is the second book in Lynn Cahoon's Kitchen Witch mystery series. This one was just as good as the first book in the series. I really like how the author is giving each of the characters more depth. I also like that she continued having several mysteries in the story so it's not just about the murder. I will say that the murder mystery aspect wasn't the most intriguing part of the book. It was all the other stuff going on around Mia that I enjoyed the most this time around. I really hope there's a third book coming in this series. I'm really excited to see what happens next in Magic Springs.
I received this book for an honest review from netgalley #netgalley
I've read the other books in this series and I find them enchanting and fun. This one was no exception. Great plot and scenery.
This book is off to a slow start. Which is all right for me. It’s the first in the series for me, so the slow start gives me a chance to be introduced to the characters. It’s making me curious about the previous stories.
Then a body is found in Mia’s backyard. In most cozies this is where the pace picks up as the sleuth gets herself involved in the mystery. Not so much here. The slow pace continues. Even though there are plenty of mysteries around: there’s the unknown dead man; someone told Mia she’s better of leaving or even selling her building; and one of her house guests is a novice witch that may have or may not have cast a spell or two for her own benefit. It’s not until after Mia has finished work for the day that she starts a little investigation.
The story continues in this vain. It isn’t until the last quarter of the book that Mia puts in some actual effort in getting to know who the victim was and who might have known him.
I’m not sure what to think of this story. There is plenty of mystery in this story, but it mainly has to do with Mia’s house. For the most part, it’s a lot of mundane stuff about work and locking doors that would have happened too if there had not been a dead man in Mia’s backyard. Mia certainly didn’t act like there was any urgency to solving that murder.
Still, it was an okay read, it just lacked a good hook to pull me in.
This book is No. 2 of the series. The characters pick up from the first book One Poison Pie with the addition of Cindy, Dorian's daughter.. The story is a good one with all it's turns and events. I loved the fact that Dorian's spirit is in the cat Mr. Dorsey and his antics because of it. I loved when the author told the history of the grimoire (book) and the passing of it down. I wish that the author described the town of Magic Springs more and it's association to witches. I would have liked to read more about the history of the family to the town and was disappointed that the grandmother, Mary Alice Carpenter did not reveal the secret she is withholding from Mia. I hope the author gives more background about the family and the ghost that was in the storage room in the next of the series.
Thank you NetGallery and Kensington Publishing Corp. for this ARC.
The Kitchen Witch Mysteries are becoming my favorite Lynn Cahoon series. Her cozy mysteries are big on heart and intrigue. The chemistry between Mia and Trent is perfect and the cast of characters are endearing. The only problem, I wish she could write them faster!
First I would like to thank Netgalley and Kensington books for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I have to say that there are aspects in books that must be there for me to like them. Characters, or at least the main character be likable, to me, a progression in the lives of the characters if this is a series, and a mystery compelling enough to keep me reading. The writer also has to have the gift to create scenes that I can see while reading. Lynn Cahoon consistently ticks all the boxes for me.
In this episode Mia's Kitchen is starting to collect clientele and she is getting busier but when a body shows up in her backyard and then a guest comes to stay it really puts extra pressure on her to clear everything up so she can go back to just catering. The pace of the story is brilliant, love the characters, love the setting. What can I say, other than hurry up and write more books in this series!
Mia has settled in a bit to Magic Springs. Her business is operating and she has plans to expand it. While there are still some who don't want her to refurbish the school, for various reasons, she also has support from friends. There is some flirting and potential romance heating up.
The school, which is now her home and business, is as much a character as Mia's kitchen witch and possessed cat.
Grans' former beau, now deceased (yet not gone) passed along his Grimoire to his daughter, an actress. She mistakenly tries to use a spell or two to boost her career. Since she never paid attention to any magical lessons from her father, things go wrong. She comes to Magic Springs for help, and to settle her father's estate. When a man is found dead in Mia's garden, suspicion falls on this visiting guest. Since the victim was found at Mia's home, she gets involved in the investigation.
Many story trails to follow but they blend wonderfully, giving us better insight to Magic Springs and Mia's life struggles. I enjoy these characters and appreciate watching them grow in each book.
If that isn't enough, your mouth will water as Mia mixes up delicious meals.
Recipes included at the end!
