Great historical fiction. This book had it all- romance, action, mischief, and a mystery.
Loved the characters, their easy and at times funny. banter, and how they interact. While the mystery was predictable, the resolution was exciting. Fast paced read.
IF you love historical fiction with strong characters, this is a great read.
Vanessa Kelly is an auto-buy author for me. The Highlander's Irish Bride fits very well within the series. We are getting to know all of the members of the clan Kendrick family. Works as a stand alone but the books in this series and previous are all connected.
We begin in the aftermath of a race Kathleen Calvert instigates with her neighbor. Her overbearing parents send her off to Scotland with a Duchess (Gillian from book in previous series) and a stowaway! They visit Lorn Arnipor and his wife Victoria in Glasgow where they need an escort to the Highlands. Kathleen is a funny character and I love her growth through the novel.
Grant Kendrick's family seems to instantly play match maker when he is struck by the first sight of Kathleen. Grant is serious, kind, great at business and in high intensity situations. I loved Grant's desire to care for everyone and also how it took him time to get to know
It is a very slow build. Romance doesn't begin to take shape until more than half way through the book. There was also a lot of repetition without diving deeper into the character's backstory til the end of the book. It was a light, fun read overall.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was so much fun! I loved the characters. I feel like I missed some of the story because I haven't read the rest of the series, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
This book really frustrated me.
I really enjoyed the first 2/3 books, mostly because of Grant - I really loved him at the beginning and he carried the story for me.
I had issues with the story however especially the last third. I liked the parts in grants POV but I didn’t not like how he was described by the heroine, she constantly calling him boring just because he cares about his work and she’s not very nice to him. There were many interactions between them that I liked but I didn’t feel like there was enough development in their relationship, I didn’t feel their chemistry and was just constantly told my other characters that they were into each other.
The inner conflicts in their relationship didn’t make any sense to me and were kind of silly. And the ending was way overly dramatic.
I liked enough of the story throughout the middle to give it 3 stars but I would probably not recommend it to people.
You know the old saying, "Don't judge a book by it's cover." No, I'm not talking about The Highlander's Irish Bride which has a lovely cover! I'm talking about Grant, the hero! Kathleen thought Grant was boring, until their carriage is ambushed! He's wonderful! Their relationship is so well matched. This is a very entertaining book. The story moves well through dialogue which is a staple of Vanessa Kelly's skill as a writer. And Ms Kelly's use of brogue both Scottish and Irish this time puts the reader completely in the setting and timeframe of the story. Each book in this series is wonderful! Please keep them coming!
I received an advance reader copy through NetGalley. These are my honest opinions voluntarily given.
This is the fourth book in the Clan Kendrick series. It can stand alone, but there is a large cast of previous couples and characters who play a role. Kathleen is related to the previous heroine, and Grant is twins with the previous hero.
Sadly, this book did not work for me, and it was due largely in part to the very bratty sister, Jeannie. I was frustrated that all the adults just wrung their hands and no one put her in her place. It was fine overall but not brilliant.
Mini Review: This was a delightful romance! I liked Kathleen and Grant together. I loved their families, they were so fun! And the mystery was a nice addition to the book. Overall, I would definitely recommend reading this book!
I received an e-ARC from the publisher.
I received an ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Miss Kathleen Calvert lives her life following no one's rules until she is banished to Scotland for causing a scandal in London. Kathleen needs someone to help her calm her, but will it be the "boring" Grant Kendrick?
I enjoyed the focus on family in this story, and really liked how close they were with each other. We all have crazy relatives, and Angus had me cracking up.
Sadly, a lot of this book didn't work for me though. It had a lot of issues. First, Kathleen, Jeanette, and their friend Gillian (who is a Duchess) all acted so immature. I mean, the first 25 percent of the book drove me so crazy with how much they act like teenagers. Second, I know the author tried to give Jeanette a growth ARC here, but she was so very unlikeable, and there is zero believability that she magically got more mature. That was my biggest issue with this story. Plus, I felt like Kathleen was overshadowed so much by Jeanette acting like a brat.
It got repetitive too how many times the hero was referred to as boring. It's like we get it. He is a bore, and I was waiting for anything to make him more interesting. It never got there. I feel really bad because I know what the author was trying to do. I appreciate the effort with taking a stodgy, boring hero and pairing him with a heroine who is youthful and light-hearted, but it just didn't translate to the page as good as I wanted it to.
2.5 rounded up to 3.
The books in this series are spaced out so that it's like getting together with family once a year and catching up. I'm figuring at least one more book to go unless Grandda Angus, gets his own. Hint hint. The Highlander's Irish Bride, is a very spirited book. I very much enjoyed reading it.
The reason for Kathleen going to the Highlands is so dumb, but so is the ton who made her do it. The heroine and hero's conversations are so bland, I can't see the chemistry and the connection between them. Friendship, maybe. Romance? I don't think so. At first, I find Jeannie to be an adorable younger sister, and then, she showed her bratty attitude that is not even excusable. If I were Kathleen I'll send that brat back to London immediately. Jeannie promised to behave properly when they got to Scotland, but she's so annoyingly chaotic when they got in there and I'm not amused. The only good thing I think this book gave me is the funny grandfather and the familial aspect on Grant's side. The rest can be improved much more, especially the chemistry between our main characters.
While this is the fourth book in this series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. I havent read any others and had no problem following what was going on..
I really enjoyed Kathleen and Grants story, its a slow burn romance that had me laughing out loud at some points.. Kathleen gets in trouble alot... The last straw is when she gets caught racing her friend in a carrage while wearing a toga.. by a big ol gossip.. This of course is going to cause a scandal, so Kathleen is going to be sent to Scotland to help her cousin who just got married and had a baby..
Thankfully she is going with a duchess.. One who is quite the character and was hilarious.. They make a stop and thats where we meet Grant.. He is a buisness man who is helping his brothers, he mostly works, and since his twin brother married doesn't really have a whole lot of fun.. When Kathleen and Grant meet there are instant sparks..
The more time they spend together the more they are realize that they are falling in love. Between Grant helping his brother with this highwaymen problem, and Kathleen trying to reign in her little sister, who falls in love at the drop of a hat, and doesn't listen to Kathleen at all they have their work cut out for them trying to find anytime together..
I will definitely be reading the other books in this series. I need more of these characters, and I can't wait to see what things they got into to before this book.
Miss Kathleen Calvert is sent to Scotland before scandal can get out about her racing horse carriages across Hampstead Heath. She is to visit a cousin who has recently had a baby. Her younger sister Jennie, who is sixteen stows away and ends up in Scotland as well. Grant Kendrick is the quieter brother in the Kendrick clan. He is attracted to Kathleen but others are so busy teasing and matchmaking it muddies the potential romance. This is a story I normally would love but parts just missed for me. Little sister Jennie, who should be some comic relief, was just a total brat and was distracting. She engages in a lot of risky behavior for someone close to coming out in society and no one tries to stop her. Also the mystery of who is robbing and causing damages in the area isn't hard to solve. The main romance is slow to happen which I don't usually mind. But in this case the extra events overshadow the romance.
This is the fourth in the series and I think some of the characters I read about probably had their story in previous books. This is a solid read but I wish I had loved it more. Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for an ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I loved The Highlander’s Irish Bride by Vanessa Kelly. If you are a lover of romance books, you can’t help but fall in love with this book.
The Highlander’s Irish Bride has a captivating story. However, the main attraction of the books is the protagonists – Kathleen and Grant. Kathleen is a headstrong and free-spirited woman, while Grant is a successful businessman and often burns the midnight oil to attend to the affairs of his business. When they meet, sparks are bound to fly.
Both are nervous around each other. Kathleen assumes Grant does not want her because she is too simple while Grant assumes Kathleen does not want him because he is boring. Both are pining for each other, yet no one will confess their real feelings.
The book features a slow build-up of romance which is my favorite kind of romance.
The Highlander’s Irish Bride is an excellent romance with sizzling chemistry between the lead pair, a loving and supportive family to cheer on the lovebirds, and a dangerous villain to put a spanner in the works. I completed the book in two days straight, so anxious I was to find out if Grant and Kathleen would be united.
Out of all the secondary characters, I loved Angus the best. He would drop in at the most inappropriate moments with the most inappropriate comments, but his character injected a lot of humor into the story. I now desperately want to read the other books in this series to read about the love stories of the other Kendrick brothers.
Highly recommended for historical fiction and romance readers alike.
Many thanks to the publisher for my copy of the book via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion on the book.
Witty and dangerous this book is #4 in this series.
Kathleen is the daughter of an Irish aristocrat who intends to never act like one. All she wants is to return to Ireland.
Grant spent his youth with dangerous and wild escapades. He has settled down to become a successful business man.
This book is a good one. Vanessa Kelly has surpassed my expectations.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
This was the first book I have read by Vanessa Kelly and it will not be my last. It is the fourth book in the Clan Kendrick series but it can be read as a standalone. I will be reading the other books in this series. I found it very entertaining and it has some laugh out loud scenes.
This book is about Kathleen and Grant and the obstacles they must get through to find their happily ever after. There are a lot of funny over the top situations which I enjoyed.
Vanessa Kelly writes a great epilogue too. I cannot wait to go back and read the series from the start.
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for the advanced copy of the book in exchange for my honest review of the book
Kathleen Calvert and Grant Kendrick are very different from each other. Kathleen doesn't always think her actions through thoroughly. She would rather do first, think later, and then face the consequences. Grant is reserved, and even considers himself boring. Do opposites really attract? This fourth book in the Clan Kendrick series answers that very question in a most delightful way. This is a top notch series. Although you can read them as standalones, do yourself a favorite and read all of them. Each new character we meet is a marvelous addition to the cast. The old characters remain entertaining, especially grandpa Angus. He is a hoot! The villains are dastardly, although it was easy to pick who it was in this one. Don't miss this one!
There were many things I liked about this book. I love the Kendrick clan and not only the couple that is the main focus, but also the relationships among the entire family. Kathleen and Grant were an appealing couple. At times, however, their personalities were underdeveloped, and there was too much focus on Kathleen’s little sister. Finally, the author has a tic that started to drive me nuts; about halfway through the book, the female characters started calling each other “old girl.” It came from out of nowhere and became completely distracting.
This book was so much fun. Headstrong, independent women and sexy gruff highlanders, mystery and romance, laughter and love, it has it all on top of making me laugh out loud. I was so frustrated with Jeannie though, but her antics definitely added to the drama and adventure of the story. Overall, loved it and now need to go back and read the previous books!
When Miss Kathleen Calvert's hoydenish escapades put her brother's betrothal at risk, she is sent away to visit family in Scotland. Reformed rake Grant Kendrick has become a successful businessman, but his meddling family thinks he needs more in his life than work. He's put in charge of escorting houseguest Kathleen and her troublesome sister to his brother's home.
Her antics were highly annoying, and she pulled so much focus that at 50% of the way through the book I was still waiting for the hero and heroine to have a meaningful interaction. For me, the romance was not balanced well with the other things taking place in the story. But, if you like a lot of meddling and family shenanigans, this book might be for you.
Tropes: Road Trip, Protector, Twins
* I received an ARC and this is my honest review. #TheHighlandersIrishBride #NetGalley
As I sit down to write this review, I'm feeling a bit perplexed. There were so many things I liked about this story, but there were enough wishy-washy bits that I debated about writing one at all. So I think it will be easiest to list what worked and what didn't, this time around.
The Good: The story concept is a very good, pairing a repressed Highlander with a Irish Hellion. I'm a big fan of the "opposites attract" scenario.
I'm also a huge fan of witty banter, which this story has in spades and the secondary characters are all very colorful.
The Bad: Although there is a nice spark of chemistry between Grant and Kathleen when they first meet, their relationship gets so bogged down by self-doubts, too many matchmakers and constantly getting their signals crossed, that by the time they come together, I was no longer truly engaged with the relationship at all.
And the subplot involving the gang of criminals, which held promise at adding some intrigue to the story, just fell flat from predictability. The mastermind is obvious from the moment the character is introduced and the finale to this part of the story, tried hard but failed to be dramatic.
The Ugly: Kathleen, who is supposed to be the scandalous rebel of the story is overshadowed completely by her BRAT of a step-sister's endless shenanigans, who she is constantly making excuses for and coddling when she should be putting her foot down.
The sister, for me, was the main detractor to this entire story. Her antics were downright annoying and had she been given a more minor roll so that more emphasis could have been placed on the development of Kathleen and Grant's relationship and fleshing out the sub-plot a bit more, I think this story might have sparkled instead of fizzling out.
