I love to cook, and soups, in particular, are my passion. I loved this recipe book which included so many unique recipes for cooking soup. They truly are all very "healing" and hearty, and I cannot wait to try some of these! I would recommend this to any other foodies that love a nice warm soup for dinner.

Offering traditional Chinese recipes tailored to the seasons, this is an invaluable collection of healing soups to get us through the depths of winter and stay healthy.

This was an interesting book but not the typical cookbook one may expect - the soups are more for remedies than for eating on a regular basis. The author does a nice job explaining her own experience with Chinese medicine and I think that adds a personal touch to the book, but your average person looking to make a healing soup may not find this book the easiest to use. Some of the ingredients are difficult to find in the average grocery store and may require that you visit a market instead but I made a few of the 'easier' soups and did think they made me feel good. I appreciated that recipes were grouped by season because I love finding season-specific items to make.

Interesting book on healing Chinese soups. It is not really a typical soup cookbook, and not what I expected. If you are interested in Chinese medicine, this book is for you.

I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley. My review is voluntary.

An informative guide to Chinese herbal soups and how to use them to aid in healing your imbalances - I learned quite a bit about the pacing of one's body and the correct time for specified activities that I'll be integrating into my routine in the coming months. I do believe this will help immensely for those (including myself) looking to reset the body given the stressors the world has experienced over the last 2 years. I read this to my spouse and he found the authors' tone a bit... scolding maybe?... but I enjoyed it immensely; it's something to keep in mind if you prefer something more neutral/warm.. A recommend.

Healing Herbal Soups is a collection of healing herbal soups by Rose Cheung and Genevieve Wong. Due out 21st Sept 2021 from Simon & Schuster on their Tiller Press imprint, it's 224 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.

This collection is based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and is designed to heal and support better health and a healthy immune system through herb based broths and infusions. These are not intended for tasty eating purposes and most of them won't taste especially appetizing. The authors have not included annotations or links to research showing the efficacy of these medicinal soups, but given the long history of TCM and the increasing use in association with western medicine (even the WHO is now supporting TCM in clinics around the world, especially in underserved populations), many westerners are turning to TCM for help with health problems. There is, in addition to the recipes, much information given about qi (energy), acupoints, and meridians.

The authors have, in conjunction with a TCM practitioner, translated these traditional recipes from Chinese and made them available to readers. The first part of the book explains the concepts and basic precepts of TCM along with the traditional view of pathogenesis and the origins of illness. They've included a primer on the ingredients used in the book and some suggestions on how to source them.

The second section of the book contains the recipes, grouped by season: Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter as well as a section devoted specifically to immune boosting soups and drinks. Each of the recipes contain a description and background, uses, ingredients in a bullet list with weight measurements in ounces, and step-by-step preparation instructions. Ingredients are listed with English and Chinese names. Tips are listed in a footer bar at the end of the recipe. Most of the recipes are to be strained; those recipes where the solid ingredients can be eaten are specified.

Many of the recipe ingredients will require a large specialist grocery or Asian herbalist supplier.

There are quite a lot of interesting recipes and I intend to give them a fair try. There is little photography included in the book and the internal photographs are black and white (in the advance copy I received for review) with a retro-traditional vibe.

Four stars. Interesting concepts and well written recipes. This would be a good choice for library acquisition, alternative medicine adherents, and readers who wish to support and expand on more mainstream western science.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I want the thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. This book is just wow! I am all about healthy soups and this has given me so many more ideas! I really only made one healthy immune booster soup and I can finally make lots more! Now that fall and winter is coming up this is just going to be perfect! Highly recommend!

When I decided to review this book, I expected that it would be a cookbook with herbal soup recipes. So, my review is based on that. What I wasn't expecting was that more than half the book is about Chinese medicine and only 10 soup recipes at the back of the book. That was a bummer, but I proceeded to look through the recipes to see what would look good to make. Once again my heart sunk as read through the ingredient list.... pork spleen, five finger peach, lotus seeds, coix seeds, kapok tree flowers, big lily leaf, and so many more. I have gone to Asian markets many times but I am so unfamiliar with these ingredients and to be honest, haven't seen them. So, I don't even know how I would make these soups. This book might be great for those who already practice Chinese medicine, but for the common cook who is very health-conscious, it probably won't work.

I think I received an incomplete copy. It ends on page 85 with a recipe. The photos are black and white so It's hard to see. I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I love the title and cover but the actual content was a surprise. Yes the book holds recipes but the pictures are in black and white and the actual healing significance is doubtful.

The book holds oriental medical healing but honestly you lost me at damp hands and air conditioning being bad for you. The actual ingredients for the recipes were not something you’d expect in a regular grocery and I’m not eating kudzu. While this book may work for some it was not for me. Due to my lack of understanding I will not be posting any reviews any where.

I really enjoyed this book, especially Chapter 2 when it outlines the causes of illnesses and goes over the yin and yang imbalances. There is a great ingredients chapter and then chapter 6 and on gets into the soup recipes. It's currently summer where I am so I'm not wanting soups right now but best believe I will be making many of these recipes in a few months when fall sets in.

Great book!

I did not read Healing Herbal Soups through an educator lens.

Healing Herbal Soups by Rose Cheung and Genevieve Wong really caught my attention. I had not really looked at the description well prior to requesting the book and was pleasantly surprised with it even after realizing it was nothing like I had thought it would be. Healing Herbal Soups had some wonderful information in the front in regards to yin and yang and hot/cold and being able to eat foods to balance your energies. I'm not sure if the book (94 pages) was not downloaded all the way or not. I felt that there needed to be more with actual healing soup recipes. The ingredients would take some time to purchase, but knowing that this is an Eastern cookbook is helpful in understanding how and where to purchase ingredients.

Healing Herbal Soups is an integrative holistic health cookbook with a lot of information about traditional Chinese medicine. The premise is that the soups will balance the yin/yang/chi energy within your body with emphasis on warming and cooling foods. The recipes are complex as they require ingredients that may not be accessible if you don't have a well stocked Asian grocer or apothecary nearby. There is an effect of whole living in harmony with nature's cycles throughout the book. I recommend this book for people who are practitioners or patients of traditional medicine, homeopathy, and those looking to integrate more balanced chi into their lives, but recommend consulting with a pharmacist if you take any daily western medicine pharmaceuticals to avoid contraindications from some of the herbal ingredients.

Gifted copy courtesy of the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I love TCM and find it fascinating, so I was excited to preview this book. There’s a nice overview of TCM, as well as the author’s personal experiences using Chinese medicine to overcome chronic health issues. That being said, I find this book rather daunting. The ingredients would be very difficult to source for quite a lot of people (myself included) and it would take a combination of commitment and energy to follow the stringent seasonal guidelines and do the prep work. I could see this being a good resource for someone dedicated to using TCM to tackle their health concerns, but not a casual cook or someone with limited time and energy.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Not the easiest of cookbooks to follow. Ingredients that can only be found at specialty Asian markets or online (they do have a website that has links to purchase all you need for recipes and what cookware you need) The recipes do look good and helpful.

I love soup but can’t actually think of any besides the major ones so this was a good book. Wish it was more vegetarian friendly. While I know I can replace pork with any vegetable, it’s not the same. The flavor just doesn’t hit the same, anyone who says otherwise is lying

Starts the the basics boiling 101, there is a a lot of fruit in the soups and I can’t say I have ever tried any of the soups in this book before.
