I'm on a Highlanders romance spree, and I'm loving every second of it!!
The book was fantastic. The romance was so beautifully written, the characters reactions and the way they delt with challenges were so mature and reflected how hard their lives were.
The plot was super engaging, it was fast paced and it had multiple subplots; they all were interesting and added to the beauty of the story.
Magnus and Brenna are officially one of my favorite couples, their romance was my favorite kind, mature and heartfelt. Some scenes actually managed to make me tear up, that's how invested I was.
The setting of the clan and the side characters were all really nice, they definitely enhanced the book and made the reading experience so enjoyable.
One of my favorites this year.

The series that I have thoroughly enjoyed for the last several years has finally come to an end, but the bittersweet ending comes with an amazing story of two people that you don’t expect to find love. Maeve Greyson has taken readers on a harrowing adventure through the last six novels, making us cry, fear, and hope along with her characters, but the love she has shared with us has never failed. Clan MacCoinnich has one more miracle to pull off for one of their sons and Magnus de Gray needs his adopted family with him to overcome a huge error in his past and find a way to have a happy future. When Magnus learns that the woman he shared a passionate night with was not only pregnant but died giving birth to a son, he will stop at nothing to right the wrong of having inadvertently abandoned his son. He travels far on the hunt for the son he didn’t know he’s had the last five years, but the boy and his aunt, Brenna, seem to have disappeared into the ether after the tragedy that befell their clan. Brenna has done the best she can to survive after her sister’s death, caring for her young nephew as her own son and has promised she will never trust another man the way her sister did Magnus. When Magnus rides into her yard one day her worst fears are realized, but she quickly begins to question all she believes about the blackguard who took advantage of her sister and left behind a child. Magnus doesn’t understand the attraction to Brenna but he is not willing to give up a moment with his son, even if it means fighting with her to keep them all safe. When tides turn quickly against Brenna and Magnus has to carry them away to safety, bringing them into the Clan MacCoinnich fold in order to keep them truly safe and Brenna learns that she misjudged him completely. The more time they are together though the harder it is to resist the temptation and soon they find themselves building a family, but can their past and fears be overcome in order for them to have a future, or is love not going to be enough this time? I loved this story and getting to see the sparks flying between Magnus and Brenna even as they battled against one another. Brenna has lived with the consequences of Magnus and Bree’s choices while they both escaped them, but the anxiety and dread have left her mistrustful and unwilling to open her heart, especially to Magnus because she believes him to be a liar and a scoundrel. Even then she didn’t allow her personal opinion to color Magnus’s relationship with his son, which shows you right away the type of woman she is. Her brazenness and boldness are countered by her compassion and sweetness, making her a truly interesting character; she was unwilling to allow Magnus to suffer discomfort while at the same time cursing him in her mind because of his actions, but she manages to open her heart to him reluctantly. I loved that she was able to offer understanding and forgiveness when so many others, Magnus included wouldn’t have. Magnus carries a heavy burden for the problems he caused for Brenna and the pain he caused her family, but he is unwilling to allow his son to grow up in need of anything or thinking he is unwanted. His honor, strength of character, and empathy show him to be more than just the typical strong warrior of his time. He is smart and dedicated as well and I loved watching him mentoring his cousin and son as they took their journey and then made a family once they arrived back at their Clan. The heat between Brenna and Magnus was a subtle undercurrent from the beginning, but they both fought it so hard that when it finally exploded it was amazing to experience. I loved every moment of this poignant series finale and seeing all of the couples (or hearing about some) and learning about the next generation. I cannot wait for whatever Ms. Greyson gives us next and know I will enjoy each book in that series too, but I will always hold a special place for Clan MacCoinnich in my heart.
I just loved Brenna and Magnus! Their story is engaging, fast-paced and an all out roller coaster ride of excitement. Well done.
Thank you Maeve Greyson, Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley for allowing me an advance copy for my honest feedback.
I loved Brenna’s and Magnus’s story! So many twists and turns and surprises. It’ll keep you on the edge of your seat until the end. A great addition to the Highland Heroes series. 5 stars!
An Excellent Scottish Romantic Adventure
When Magnus went searching for his son, he did not know how his life would change. Could he get Brenna to trust him? She thought he abandoned her sister and his child, but there is much more to his story. Magnus and Brenna will endure much. Their path won’t be easy. There is danger and treachery ahead. The adventure kept me turning the pages. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it to those who like action-packed highland romances.
This book reminds me why I love historical romance so much. The Ghost the last book of a highlander Hero series. I have not read the other books in this series, but there is no problem to get into the story.
Both main characters are lovely, plots are grabbing, fast pacing. I really enjoyed this book
This is my first time read Maeve Greyson but definitely not the last.
Love the cover.... absolutely hawt! This was my first book of the series and the last book of this series but completely stand alone. My first by this author and this was a fun historical romance.
What did I like? I love highland romance and this was such a fun book. Brenna was a tough lass keeping Magnus’s son well after her sister passed. Magnus never knew he had a son and after receiving a missive he journeys to find his already five year old child. The two meet and sparks fly.
Would I recommend or buy? Fun historical romance but I would buy based on the blurb and cover. Recommend to anyone who loves historical bodice rippers! Four stars!
I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review!
I've enjoyed this series a lot - so much so - that even though Secret Baby is my very very very very least favorite trope in all of Romancelandia - I still wanted to read this book. Magnus had a one-time encounter with a woman and then left to fight a battle. The woman asked him to take her virginity in hopes that it would help her escape a marriage she didn't want. It did that - but it also led her and her sister (Brenna) to be exiled from their home, an unplanned pregnancy, and everyone in her home to be murdered by the man she was supposed to marry. Since that time Brenna has been the primary caregiver for her sister's child. Her sister died following childbirth - with her dying wish for her son to meet and know his father. Unfortunately, due to circumstances outside of Magnus's or Brenna's control - the letter telling Magnus about his child didn't reach him until five years later. Magnus immediately sets off to find his son. When he does find his son and Brenna - he finds a woman who despises him and a lot of mistrust. All of which is totally reasonable in light of what they know of the situation.
I think the evolution of the relationship between Brenna and Magnus was completely reasonable and relatable. Brenna has been through the gauntlet. All for her nephew - she literally gave up everything for him and has been treated poorly by just about everyone she has encountered. She is bitter and untrusting when we meet her - with good reason.
I did feel that everyone was a little too hard on Magnus. Everyone - including Magnus himself came down very hard on him for his actions. While, I am not denying culpability, I don't think the extent of it was really fair. A lot of the blame towards Magnus was - perhaps misplaced. Obviously - in hindsight - he should have stayed and made sure Brenna's sister was ok and not mistreated - or maybe just helped her to escape instead of having sex with her. But the outside actors in the overall tragedy of that story - really are the ones that caused it to be a tragedy. I feel strongly that had Magnus known or had an inkling of what was going to happen he would have acted differently. And it is 100% not his fault he didn't find out about it until 5 years later. Ultimately - this knocked the story down for a me a bit because it felt like preaching about the dangers of sex before marriage. I'm not sure that has a place in romance.
Overall I liked this conclusion to the series - but it wasn't as satisfying as I wanted it to be.
I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, but these opinions are all my own.
Magnus de Gray discovers he is a father five years later! He never received the note until now! He is shocked, but ready to face his responsibility. The mother had dies, but he is going to find his son and bring him back to Clan MacCoinnich who is the only family that has claimed him.
Brenna Maxwell is the only mother figure her little nephew has ever known. She will do anything to protect him and herself. The thought of Magnus only brings a torrid of contempt and venom against that man. She will not let him near her nephew if she has anything to do with the situation.
Be prepared for the lightning bolts as they prepare for a head long battle, but that is not the only one these two souls will be fighting!
I received a free advanced copy from NetGalley and these are my willingly given thoughts and opinions.
Magnus de Gray has found out he has a five son out there somewhere, a son he never knew existed living with his Aunt after his mother died. His one goal is to find him. Clan MacCoinnich is the only family Magnus has ever known, they have taught him the importance and meaning of being a family. Brenna Maxwell made a deathbed promise to her sister for her son to know his father, but why hasn’t the man ever shown up? When Magnus does show up her and Keagan her nephew are suspicious and wonder why he’s just now showing up? A captivating story of young Magnus helping a friend escape an unwanted marriage to finding he has a son he never knew about. He’s always longed for a family and poor Brenna whose been abused and has always taken care of herself and Keagan. She know if Keagan goes with his father she’ll lose everything she loves and holds close. What she doesn’t expect is to like Magnus, really like him she’s portrayed him in her mind as a rogue and a seducer of sister who loft without a thought. I have voluntarily read and reviewed the excellent story of love and redemption.
An emotional journey that brings this amazing series to a close.
Magnus set out to find his son, who was five year old and he had not known about. Little Keigan was in the care of his aunt Brenna, since his mother had died in childbirth. Having been banished from her home by her father, they had been trying to make it own their own.
Brenna was determined to dislike Magnus, but he was so kind and helpful, not at all like she had thought. Attraction builds and it is wonderful to behold!
Loved this story and highly recommend!
A sword for hire; that is what Magnus was. He just found out he was a father of a five-year-old son except he had no idea where to find him. His went on his journey with a young man Evander. Unfortunately for Magnus, Evander was a chatterbox when all Magnus wanted was peace. Magnus was a good man, kind, fair, understanding, thoughtful and considerate. Although at times Evander pushed him almost over the edge. Over his travels he finds out the mother of his son had died at childbirth and the aunt Brenna had been taking care of the child. Eventually he found Brenna who hated his guts for deserting her sister and son when they most needed them. However, Brenna was not cruel to keep him from getting to know his son Keigan. The barbs Brenna kept throwing at Magnus I feel were like foreplay. They both were attracted to each other and yet because of the last five years of what she felt was Magnus' neglect kept her from getting to know him. She kept telling herself no one was as genuine as Magnus seemed to be. But eventually she realized that he was the real deal. When Brenna and Keigan were in danger, Magnus and Evander took them back to the keep Tor Ruadh. There Brenna found complete acceptance for who she was and not her past which she felt ashamed of. Then the trouble with the English happened and Brenna was faced by several of her tormentors of the past. Magnus and Brenna took off and ran to the cave storage holds to wait out the English investigation. But trouble followed. Someone had betrayed Magnus' clan and all the storage holds in the caves were destroyed. Even worse the English were crawling around the cave tunnels searching for them. Help from an unlikely source came and helped save them. An exciting story full of suspense, regret and promise. A good read and I do recommend it.
The Ghost by Maeve Greyson is the last of the Highland's Heroes series which has outlined the lives and loves of men of the MacCoinnich clan. The hero of our story is Magnus de Gray who is a cousin but has lived among the clan most of his life. He is footloose and fancy free, no really interested in marriage. One day he receives a missive that has taken five years to reach him. It tells of a son, his son, born him by Lady Bree Maxwell. He had not loved Lady Bree but he had liked her very much. She was betrothed to a cruel man the age of her father and wanted out of it. She thought if she were ruined he would not want her and she chose Magnus to make that happen. She died in childbirth, having run from the clan with her sister, Brenna. Neither of them had known the fate of their home, that when the cuckolded betrothed had burned the keep to the ground and killed any left nearby. The villagers were lucky he hadn't turned his eye toward them. All that had saved his son was the fact his mother had run. But now, he had to find them. Stopping at an inn he got direction from the proprietor there and so they left on their journey, asking as they went. Meanwhile, Keigan and Brenna had built themselves a cottage in the forest and survived by their own hand and by the things the villagers brought in exchange for herbs or potions that Brenna distributed. When Magnus find them, they are about to be chased away or worse by villagers angry with her for supplying a death potion to an old couple, the wife wanting to die with her very sick husband.
This is another of Greyson's terrific romances with plenty of twists and turns before the end. Magnus' mother had been killed for a witch and he's always felt guilty that he hadn't been there to save her. Now he had Brenna, who had been forced to sleep with men by the cruel landlord who had housed her after Keigan's birth. This had made her stronger and more independent when she finally escaped. She loved Keigan like a mother but recognized that Magnus was his father. Magnus had already worked out a solution to this issue. But then tragedy struck. Greyson is known for her strong characters and this book is no exception. Magnus and Brenna are both characters with depth and serious emotion. Neither of them is willing to give up. Neither of them is shy about taking a life if that person is threatening either of them. The plot is good and as believable as any in this genre. The pacing is excellent, keeping the reader's interest and driving the story forward. All-in-all, this is an excellent book and I am more than willing to recommend it.
I was invited to read a free ARC of the Ghost by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. #netgalley #theghost
I received an advanced reader's copy of The Ghost by Maeve Greyson from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The story was a quick, easy read and the characters were well-written. The plot moved quickly and pulled on societal/gender expectations in old Scotland for dramatic and emotional moments. I liked the dynamic between the main characters, Brenna Maxwell and Magnus de Gray, from the moment they met until the end. The dialogue between them was engaging and their chemistry was readily apparent.
Magnus, finding out he has a son, goes to find him, and meets the boy and his aunt Brenna. Old time Scottish romance, although not sure why but never felt the strong ties of romance. Loved the by Keigan and Evander made me laugh too. Highly recommend, and although I read this out of order wasn't lost in the series.
Finally! The Ghost is Magnus’ romantic journey in the Highland Heroes series. Suddenly finding he is a father and determined to find his son, his life is forever changed. Once he finds his son and his son’s aunt, he brings them to Tor Ruadh to join the MacCoinnich family. Being raised as a MacCoinnich, Magnus is a warrior and a gentleman, possibly the most mysterious of the MacCoinnich men.
Brenna, his son Keigan’s aunt, begins to fall for Magnus once she sees he is a good man and not the vile person she has hated for so long. Both Brenna and Magnus have difficult backgrounds as you will see when reading The Ghost. Brenna has some extremely hurtful, personal issues, as does Magnus. Yet, she sees him own all of the problems he caused unknowingly by not being there for Keigan’s mother; her heart begins to heal. Brenna is determined to fulfill the promise made to her sister for Keigan to know his father.
Ms. Greyson interweaves the clan members/former characters within The Ghost, so we see a bit of how their lives are well and full. Other secondary characters add to the story line to enhance Brenna and Magnus’ journey to their HEA. Keigan is a mischievous handful and loveable. Cadha was a surprise.
This is a fantastic series. Sad to see it end.
“I have a son.” Magnus de Gray is in shock after receiving a letter that was written five years ago. He immediately begins his search for his son and the mother of his child. When he finds that Nithdane Keep has been destroyed, his search intensifies.
Brenna loves her nephew, his father, no. She is still angry that the man who sired Keigan has left them to fend for themselves. Once she meets Magnus, she realizes that perhaps she has been mistaken. Their shaky truce is put to the test when the Scottish Witch Hunters arrive for her.
The trip to Tor Ruadh is a journey in miles and in the beginning of their courtship. But it is not an easy courtship, Brenna has enemies and they both want to destroy not only her, but her new family and home. Magnus hopes to save her and she prays to save all of them, but will either of them succeed?
This well-written Highlander romance is dramatic, witty, and full of adventure as Magnus sets out to find the son he did not know he had. Having Evander at his side as he sets out on his journey is enough to try any man's patience. However, Evander proves his worth when they finally catch up with Brenna and his precious son, Keigan. Brenna has hated Magnus for five long years for leaving her sister pregnant, but much of what she believes regarding the circumstances is based on assumptions and it is only when Magnus and Brenna start to reveal the past to one another, do things fall into place. Both Magnus and Brenna have known so much pain and have fought their own wars, leaving physical and emotional scars. The closing chapters of this book are fraught with drama, but together with Clan MacCoinnich at their backs, they overcome impossible odds and find a way through their difficulties. I thoroughly enjoyed this exciting book. Having met Magnus in previous novels in this series, I was already half in love with him. However, this romance sealed the deal for me as the quiet warrior sets out to right the wrongs of the past. Brenna is a feisty and self-sufficient heroine, making her eminently suitable to fit in with the rest of the MacCoinnich women. Keigan is an absolute delight and his contribution to the story makes it that much more enjoyable. I received a copy of this book as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
3.5 Stars
I enjoyed the overall plot of this book a lot, Magnus' journey to find his son and Brenna's family history were intriguing to read. Added to that, the plot got pretty exciting toward the end and kept me wanting to turn the pages. I also very much enjoyed the way the author wrote, she painted a very vivid and realistic feeling picture of Scotland in the beginning of the 18th century.
The romance of this story fell a little flat for me. It felt not well established especially when the big L-word came way too soon, there were also some moments of 'no means convince me' that didn't quite vibe with me. Overall they spend most of the story acting like they had a much longer and deeper relationship than it was actually developed and shown in the story. That dissonance kept me from really connecting with the romance, which bummed me out because I really enjoyed both Magnus and Brenna as characters.
The cast of side characters were a great addition, especially little Keigan stole just about every scene he was in, he was just an adorable little munchkin. I adored his relationship with his aunt, Brenna, and the development of the father and son bond between him and Magnus as well as his own (conflicted) thoughts about the entire situation.
This is the final book in the Highland Heroes series and I must say I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of them! Makes me want to be part of Clan MacCoinnich, all the main characters are absolutely wonderful. This is Magnus and Brenna's story and amidst the danger and heartbreak, there is also hope and love.
Magnus is pure male hero material and when he meets his five year old son for the first time, it will melt your heart. Brenna, who has raised her sister's son since his birth, feels only hatred for the boy's father until she meets him and realizes she's been wrong all this time and that he truly is a good man. Trust doesn't come easy to her, though, so Magnus has his work cut out for him!!
Maeve Greyson is a superb writer whose stories will keep you glued to the pages from start to end. Her characters have such depth and warmth, the plots filled with danger and adventure and the endings swoon worthy. I also love the humour thrown in throughout the stories, especially the way the heroes have a healthy fear of their heroines! lol
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
