The second Jane Doe Book Club Mystery reads more like a riveting thriller than an engaging cozy mystery.
Lyla Moody, a PI who works with her uncle at Cousins Investigative Services, overhears Harper Richardson arguing with someone on the phone in the library.
Harper occasionally attends the Jane Doe Book Club meetings, and when Lyla engages her, Harper mentions Lyla’s grandmother has a few overdue books that need returning. After a bit more conversation, Harper asks Lyla how she would find someone – it seems her aunt is missing.
After the book club meeting, Lyla takes her grandmother home with plans to retrieve the delinquent books. When they arrive at Lyla’s parents’ home, they find Frances Moody’s fundraising event still going strong. Lyla and Gran head out to preview the work on the new library and discover the body of Leonard Richardson, dead.
Harper swears she did not murder her husband. However, Lyla and her mother want to help when the police arrest her for his murder. Charles Hammond, a writer and new to the area, seems to be stalking Lyla and her family, asking Lyla what she knows about her family’s secrets. Leonard Richardson’s family – son, daughter, sister, brother, and two cousins – all live in the house with Leonard and Harper.
Kate Young writes a complex story with intriguing misdirection and red herrings. The unexpected rules as Ms. Young builds suspense, carefully revealing a little more, then a little more, all at a relentless pace. This book is hard to put down. An impressive storyteller, the author’s well-developed plot relies on her carefully drawn characters working through compelling situations. Reading Between the Crimes is a gem of a thriller.
Someone hit Leonard Richardson over the head with a candlestick, killing him, but Kyla and her friends in the Jane Doe Book Club are certain that it wasn't his widow Harper. Yes, Harper was younger and yes they had their problems but cozy readers know that she isn't the only one who had issues with him. The fun part of this is the merger of the murder with Agatha Christie's Crooked House- a reminder that I'd like to go back and reread the Christie books There's more to this story, though, and Kyla will learn some things about her own family. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. It's the second in a series and perfectly enjoyable as a standalone. I'm looking forward to the next one.
I have read the first book of this series and was looking forward to seeing if things are better in this one - I hadn't liked the first one much(mainly got to do with the characters and the storytelling). I follow Kate Young's Marygene mystery series and I have really enjoyed all the books in that series. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about this series - the writing is way different (and too simple) for my liking. Also, I expected a little character introduction as the story began so that we readers do not have a hard time trying to remember who's who.
Lyla and her book group are reading the Crooked House by Agatha Christie when a murder in her parents home seems to follow that same storyline. Why do her parents and her uncle warn her to stay from a visiting writer in town? What does he know about her family that she doesn’t? Could the victims family be anymore caring about money? All these questions and more are answered in the second book in this series.

Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley. My review opinions are my own. I enjoyed the first in series and was pleased to receive this for review.
Reading Between the Crimes is the 2nd book in the Jane Doe Book Club Mysteries Series by Kate Young. The author has created fun charcters in a charming setting of a small town near Atlanta. This series has Southern charm throughout.
The Jane Doe Book Club is at the Sweet Mountain Library . Lyda overhears a difficult conversation of one of the librarians who she knows has trouble at home. When her husband turns up murdered at a later event Lyda and her grandmother Daisy will soon piece the puzzle together to help solve the crime. Suspects abound and soon Lyda is hot on the trail of the killer .
A well crafted sleuth that I enjoyed to completion. Well done to the author.
Kyle must put her intelligence to work and solve a murder to clear Harper. She and the Jane Doe Book Club must rise to the challenge to succeed. Read to find out...
What a great story with a couple of very interesting twists. I loved it! The characters are great and go well together. It was fun hanging with Lyla and her friends. Who wouldn’t want friends like Lyla’s? I have to admit Gran is my favorite. She is a hoot!! I want to be like her. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I received this book from NetGalley, but my opinion is my own.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free ebook of this title in exchange for my review.
This book is a cozy mystery, book 2 in a series. Cozy mysteries are fun, but not really realistic. They all seem to be full of towns of busy bodies who can investigate and solve a murder better than any police detective. I've heard them referred to as "hallmark channel mysteries" and I think that is accurate.
Still, they are fun and relaxing to read, and I've probably read hundreds of them over the years.
I haven't read the first book in this series, so I didnt' know the characters really well, but I felt like I could follow along fairly well. This was a typical cozy, fun and light, and I could see myself picking up the next in the series.
A fun cozy with plenty of twists and good characters. In the “slightly” unrealistic world of cozy mysteries I can see a mystery book club deciding to investigate a murder to clear someone’s name. In fact, I can see the appeal, particularly if it is a friend and the police seemed to determined not to look beyond a suspect sitting right in front of them. This is the first in the series that I have read though it isn’t the first in the series. It is not necessary to read the first one to understand this.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Good mystery with lots of twists and turns. There's also a mystery within a mystery related to Lyla's family. Nice surprise ending.
Note: there's a bit of coarse language in this book.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.

Reading Between the Crimes is the 2nd book in the Jane Doe Book Club Mysteries Series by Kate Young in which Lyda has been working with her uncle for about two years now at Cousins Investigative Service. The annual October Pub Crawl was something Lyda and her friends were looking forward to every year in Sweet Mountain north of Atlanta.
The Jane Doe Book Club was meeting this month at Sweet Mountain Library to discuss their latest book "Crooked House." Harper Richardson one of the Librarians was on her cell phone as Lyda walked in which Lyda over heard the distress and anger in Harper's voice The Jane Doe's were worried about Harper after hearing about her life at home. Upon leaving after Jane Doe meeting Lyda and her grandmother, Daisy headed to the charity benefit at Lyda's parents house. Lyda wanted to see the new Library that was recently renovated in which Gran's finds a body in there. Poor man was Leonard Richardson, Harper's husband! Who would kill him?
This story had a lot of twists and turns which kept me guessing until the end. I love the fact that we learned a lot about Lyda's mothers family. I can't wait for the next book!
Wow! Kate Young knows how to write a great mystery. I started this book, and got so hooked that I didn't put it down until I was finished.
After a book club meeting with her fellow Jane Does, Lyla Moody finds herself in the middle of another murder mystery when she finds a body during her mother's charity event. Lyla must race against time to help solve the murder and help her friend, Harper prove her innocence. Things aren't always what they seem, though, and so many secrets get unearthed. Secrets that could hurt those closest to her. I absolutely love this series that Kate Young has created. The small town feel hits so close to home for me, and makes the characters more relatable. I am looking forward to reading about Lyla in the future. I just know there will be many twists and turns that I won't see coming. The ending to this book sure shocked me!
Though I didn't like the first book in the series I was willing to give the author another try because first books are just that first books. But after reading this one as well, and enjoying the mystery and the writing style. I realized it was the heroine and her friends. Which is bad in a cozy mystery y series they are the ones solving the mystery. So if I don't like the heroine then this series isn't the one for me.
This is the second book in this series and it is even better then the first. This series has great characters and is set in a wonderful location. I cannot wait for the next book.
Sorry that I didn't read the first book in the Jane Does Book Club first as I was slightly confused at the beginning. However, I am a big fan of Kate Young's writing and kept going. Good characters and full of plot twist will keep you reading and entertained. Lyla Moody works as a P.I. with her uncle when a friend from the book club begins acting strangely. As she investigates her whole family seems oddly connected. And definitely in danger.
Reading Between the Crimes is the second book in the Jane Doe Book Club Mystery series.
I haven't read book one, but was easily able to understand the characters and setting. The plot moves along at a nice pace with some entertaining surprises! I like the setting, the characters and the plot. I loved the idea of a book club banding together to solve a real murder mystery. Fun! A very enjoyable cozy!
This is the first book by Kate Young that I've read. I'm definitely backtracking to read the first book in this series, On Borrowed Crime.
**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from Crooked Lane Books. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
Follow along with Lyla as she works to solve a mystery. This was a mystery with some definite tension at the end.
This is the second book in the series but can be enjoyed as a standalone. The mystery has a great pace with plenty of twists and turns to reader engaged. The characters were more well-rounded this time. The storyline was wrapped up nicely by the end of the book.
All thoughts and opinions are my own, and in no way have I been influenced by anyone.
After reading "On Borrowed Crime", the first book in the Jane Doe Book Club Mystery series, I couldn't not read the sequel. This is also my 3rd book by author Kate Young - can you tell I am addicted? :)
Lyla and her book club are reading Agatha Christie's "Crooked House" and suddenly find themselves in a crime scene that is remarkably similar. When Lyla's friend Harper is accused of murdering her controlling husband, Lyla and her friends move heaven and earth to prove her innocence.
"Reading Between the Crimes" is a great murder mystery and I grew even more attached to the characters. Especially Lyla's Gran, she has no filter. Kate Young has a writing style that gets you hooked from page one and when you think you know how the plot will unravel - well, let me tell you, you don't! And this is exactly why I gave this book 5 stars. Many thanks to NetGalley for giving me a chance to read this ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Lyla Moody has two loves outside of her family and friends, her job as a private investigator, and her Jane Doe Book Club. Those two worlds are about to collide however, dragging, her parents, uncle, and grandmother, along too. As it moves into the autumn in Sweet Mountain, Georgia, Agatha Christie is required reading for the Jane Does and the book club has been enjoying Crooked House by the esteemed writer when murder invades the group.
The body is found during a society event and, with the officious detective in charge blinkered to possibilities other than those already decided upon, Lyla knows she has to investigate if justice is to be served. With friends Mel and Amelia backing her up, Lila begins to delve into a case which seems almost impossible to solve, but as she gradually unearths the carefully hidden clues a devastating link to her own family can't be ignored.
This is a slow starting book and I wasn't sure about Lyla to begin with but she did grow on me and was a worthy main protagonist. The case was complex and twisty and I enjoyed everything about the main storyline, the small group working together, the secrets being kept, and the antagonists who were a bit weird to say the least!
Unfortunately I found the ending a little rushed and not as tense as it promised as the book progressed and I felt it could have been more. That said I will definitely look out for book three as this has the makings of a very good series.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. I enjoyed this book but feel there is much more to come.
