Lyla is a very strong, and capable private investigator who works with her uncle. The plot concerns her family, and a friend who gets arrested for murdering her husband. Lyla also attends a mystery book club where she is reading Agatha Christie's Crooked House. Lyla finds similarities between the story she's reading for her book club and the mystery that she's trying to solve.
This is the first time I'm reading the series, and I loved it. All the characters were ingeniously created, and the plot was engrossing. I loved how the author used the setting to set the mood. I couldn't figure out whodunnit until it was revealed at the end. I honestly can't wait until the next Jane Doe Book Club Mystery comes out. I received an advanced reader's copy from NetGlalley in exchange for my honest review.
Reading Between the Crimes by Kate Young is the newest installment in the Jane Doe Book Club Mystery series and what an installment! Lyla’s concern over arriving late at her mother’s charity event takes a backseat to her discovery of a dead body. The victim turns out to be the much older husband of a book club friend. Her friend’s marriage was not only in trouble but further complicated by a houseful of the strange family members and even more interesting dynamics between those members. Was her friend an innocent victim of a cult-like family? As Lyla investigates, she also discovers secrets long guarded by her own family.
This mystery was a wild rollercoaster ride of breathtaking twists and sudden turns! What I thought that I knew one minute, I was questioning in the next. The characters were quirky and interesting, and the story extremely well-plotted. This is one series that will stay on my list of must-reads! (I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy and all opinions are my own.)
This is the second book in the series.
This was too dark and graphic in my opinion to be classified as a cozy.
It was okay but not what I expected.

My goodness the suspense that Young holds in this novel is amazing. I devoured this book whenever I had any spare time, and the twists just kept me on the edge of my seat. I wasn't expecting the big reveal at the end of the novel and in hindsight their actions do make sense (especially for the main antagonist (?) ) Though, halfway I admit I did get lost in the character's name because of I simply forgotten who was who but that's most probably my fault. I wished Young had tie up some loose ends on the minor characters but seeing as this would be a series, I understand that. Overall, I love this novel and enjoyed the pacing of it. I wasn't expecting this many twists and turns in the plot but I'm not complaining.
The blurb sounded like it could be a good read and I like the concept of book clubs like in the Aurora Teagarden Mysteries. And the style was nice and easy flowy. Overall books from series are always readable as standalone. However, I tend to notice that, despite the background info, I've having trouble really getting enthusiastic about the stories. I might need to try beginning a series from book one.
Reading Between the Crimes by Kate Young, is the second book in the Jane Doe Book Club series, but it can be read as a stand alone. I haven’t read the first book yet, but I definitely want to read it now.
Well developed characters, surprising plot twists, a fast pace and small town setting make this a very enjoyable read. I have to say, I love Gran, she may be my favorite character. I hope there are more books in this series.
Firstly a huge thanks to Crooked Lane Publishers for my e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Reading between the crimes is the second book in the Jane Doe Book Club Mystery and I regret that I didn't read the first book in the series. Reading between the crimes follows Lyla who is roped in by Harper who works at the library to help her finr in such d her aunt and then later Harper's huband is killed in Lyla's parents library. Lyla is then on a mission to clear her friend's name and get this one of their reads is manifesting in real life. This book is fast paced and filled with endearing characters such as Lyla's grandmother. If you love Hallmark Mystery movies you will enjoy this book.
Lyla enjoys her local Jane Doe Book Club and discussing all things mystery. But when a dead body is discovered at her parent's house and appears to be her friend Harper's husband, it becomes personal. Lyla and friends work to clear Harper of suspicion but Lyla is surprised to discover some family secrets along the way.

"When Lyla Moody and her grandmother arrive at the charity event that Lyla's mother is hosting, they barely have time to hang up their fall jackets before they stumble upon a body in the library. Leonard Richardson, it seems, was robbed and then hit over the head with a brass candlestick--which throws suspicion on Harper Richardson, his young widow and a friend of the Jane Does. Lyla and the rest of the Jane Does pool their prodigious intellects to clear Harper's name. Peculiarly, all of the clues seem to have been lifted directly from the plot of Agatha Christies Classic Crooked House."
This is the second book in the series and the first one for me to read. I found that you can easily read these books as stand alone.
I really enjoyed the book. The story line was very good, I loved the all of the twists which made me continue to guess who did it. The book really grabbed me from the start and that ending! I also loved the characters, not too many and all well written and likeable. Except for some of course, but I also loved the friendships and of course the Jane Doe Book Club. I wish we had that here! I can't wait to start the first book and I hope there will be a third one!
Lyla is a member of a book club called, The Jane Doe Club, and also works with her uncle at his detective agency. The mystery hits a bit too close to home when Lyla discovers the body of a murdered man in her parents’ home while they were throwing a fundraising party. Her search for the murderer leads her into danger and the uncovering of some secrets about her own family that have been long buried. An excellent cozy series, with lots of plot twists. I definitely recommend this to any cozy readers.
Lyla works for her uncles PI firm and has a fascination with true crime. This is the 2nd story in this series. Something is going on with Lyla’s friend Harper, but Harper isn’t ready to share. Harper asks Lyla how to start locating her missing aunt. Lyle comes to find out that Harper is definitely not in a happy marriage. Before Lyla can even start to help find Harper’s aunt, Harper’s husband Leonard is murdered. It also doesn’t help that he was murdered in Lyla’s parent’s home during a fundraiser. To make matters worse, Lyla’s normally stoic mother has expressly told her to keep anything she knows about Harper or her marriage to herself. Could this get any worse! Lyla and her Gran find the body and there seems to be something missing from the scene of the crime. Things aren’t looking good for Harper; she’s definitely coming across like a gold digger. She’s much younger than her deceased hubby, his second wife, and barely married two years! Leonard’s crazy family are definitely making it seem like Harper’s the murderer, case closed! Lyla knows the Jane doe book club has to figure this out and save Harper from jail! This is a solid mystery from start to finish. We’ve got the big mystery of Leonard’s death and a personal mystery for Lyla. Why is her mother so interested in helping Harper and why is this writer in town claiming to know secrets about Lyla’s family? I did not read the first book in this series, but definitely plan to add it to my Wishlist! I enjoyed the ride this book took me on and definitely plan to read the book before this one and future Jane Doe Book Club stories!

When Lyla comes across a dead body at a charge event in her parents home she senses something is different. She never could have guessed what was to come her way!
Plenty of twists and turns as Lyla gets pulled into trying to solve the case. Definitely an ending that took me by surprise. I love to see how the characters are developing.
Thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the opportunity to read this book.
Reading Between the Crimes was a fun who done it story. Family secrets, murder, lies, friendship and more. The book club finds their town is involved in a crime similar to the book they just read. There were twists and turns trying to find out who really was involved in the murders, attacks and why. I need to go back and read book #1 now.
I received this ARC via Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books, in return for an honest review. While the second book in this series, it is easily read as a standalone. Lyla Moody and her friends enjoy their Jane Doe Book Club, particularly the recent choice by Queen of Mystery, Agatha Christie. Debating whether the heroine’s actions are believable becomes all too close to home when a murder seems to parallel the book. Lyla and her grandmother find the body of Leonard Richardson when they return home, during a society fundraiser at Lyla’s parents’ home. What was Leonard doing in the unfinished library extension and what happened to the candlestick that Lyla saw but no one else did? Does Leonard’s widow have any information, other than seeming to be a cowed and much younger wife? As Lyla works to clear her family’s name and find the murderer, she discovers long-buried secrets in her own family that seem to have a direct relation to the murdered man. This was a well-written book, and the characters are all clearly defined and voiced, so you keep track of who’s who. The who-dun-it and why were a surprise and not whom you’d expect. Looking forward to the next Jane Doe Book Club outing!
Great cozy mystery!
Lyla and the Jane Doe's Book Club are excited to be reading more mystery novels. One of the members, Harper, seems to be extremely withdrawn, and dropping hints about being in a dangerous marriage. When Harper's husband is found dead at a party Lyla's family is throwing, all fingers point too Harper. Her in laws have all apparently turned on her, and she has no one to fight for her except for Lyla and her friends, as well as Lyla's family. But what they find is a complete surprise for everyone.
Great story with a lot of twists and turns. Did not see the ending coming!
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This is a pretty decent book with likeable characters who are interesting to read about I especially liked the granny a lot. Though the book has a sort of slow start but it gathers pace very quickly. It was a good read and the mystery was a page turner though it did seem a bit incredible at times
The second in the Jane Doe series, this book really held my attention. I’d been a little ambivalent after the first book, particularly about the main character, but I really got into the story line this time. The plot partly centers on the murder of a friend’s husband, but also heavily revolves around family secrets, which is always intriguing. With the latter being a big reveal, it will be interesting to see if that storyline continues to be addressed and how.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the complimentary digital review copy of this title.
Reading Between the Crimes is a wonderful, exhilarating page turner. Lyla Moody arrives at her mother’s fundraiser and finds a dead body in her parents library. When her friend is accused of the crime Lyla and her mother step up to help out. There is nobody better to have on your side to solve the case and get you out of trouble then Lyla Moody, a tireless private investigator with amazing deductive skills. I enjoyed reading and following all of the plot twists and turns. The ending came as a complete surprise!
Thank you Netgalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
There are likeable characters in the story. Gran, in particular, si just such a character. She is just lovely. However, I didn't relate to most of the characters. In particular, the lead, and the way she approached her investigation.
Sadly, it all just felt a little too incredible for me. I can't see myself reading another in this series. I am sure it will be very popular with others who enjoy this genre.
With thanks to Crooked Lane, #Netgalley and the author for my advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I didn't really enjoy this book at all. It's not the book; it's me. I found it a little unbelievable and couldn't identify with the characters in any real way
