A good book to learn more how overconsumption is contributing to a world of overabundance of trash. There are plenty of ways as a community we can fight this problems as stated in the book. It should be an interesting read for all that are looking to reduce their carbon footprint.
In a post-pandemic world, I find myself thinking more and more about how to avoid a climate crisis. Ultimately, there's not a whole lot that I as an individual can do; most of it is reliant upon big companies to lessen their carbon footprint.
The Day The World Stops Shopping was very insightful, because there is a way to influence those companies towards this. MacKinnon recognizes that we aren't going to stop shopping entirely--and that's not his desired outcome. While this book didn't seem to focus on solutions, it did help readers dream of what could happen if we stop the consumerist cycle of buying, discarding, then buying more. I would have loved for MacKinnon to focus on how to stop overconsumption in a way that doesn't wreck the world on its own.
All together, this book was less than perfect, but an interesting read that made me think a little more about my own patterns of consumption and where I could be improving.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is surprising interesting. I kept waiting for the lists of to-dos and solutions, which never came. There is lots of data and stories and info that provide context and some hints of how we can/should change. So this is not a preachy book (good!). This is for those seeking intelligent writing, along with a light (very incomplete) analysis of the past and present, and some ideas. I liked this, but don't buy if you're looking for a lot of answers.
I really appreciate the ARC for review!!
