This was my very first audiobook and I absolutely loved it! I give this book five stars hand down. I loved the twists and turns I totally recommend this book!
I really got caught up in listening #TheLastThingHeToldMe audiobook. Excellent narration, and I really enjoyed the pacing of this book. I know it has gotten a lot of attention, and sometimes that level of hype leads to disappointment, but not here for me. I finished this quickly because I NEEDED to know what happened next. I'm reading a long list of books because I have interviews or discussions scheduled, but this I added for myself, and I'm glad I did.
For me, this book falls short of the suspense/thriller genre many are categorizing this novel. To me, this is more family-centered drama with some mystery. I will say I was riveted by the ongoing narrative, but it was hard to follow at times, and seemed the central conflict was relatively muted once you figured out what was really going on. I didn't feel connected to any of the characters at all, I just needed more oomph.
I enjoyed the narrator, she nailed the angsty teenager vibe perfectly. I could see the eye rolls in my head. Hannah's husband disappears mysteriously and everyone, US Marshalls and FBI included, is looking for answers. Hannah trusts no one and sets out on her own to find him.. Her one ally, his daughter. Their relationship, complicated. They slowly and somewhat painfully find their way into Owen's past and shocking secrets he's been keeping. Hannah, now, must determine what's truly important and put what's truly important ahead of her own wants and needs.
This book draws you right in, I did not want to stop reading. The words “Protect Her,” make you want to learn more about why Owen, leaves Hannah a note with these last words. Hannah focuses on the last thing he told her “Protect Her,” so deeply. Hannah and Bailey, a stepmother/ stepdaughter duo take on an adventure to find the truth behind Owen’s disappearance.
The plot was well-paced. The suspense was exactly right, nothing over the top, but you kept wanting to find out more about Owen and his past. You would think you had one thing figured out, then a plot twist would happen and everything you thought would be wrong. The twists Laura Dave used kept me wanting to continue reading. I loved the back story the duo discovered and I highly recommend reading it. I enjoyed listening to the audiobook!
This book starts with a bang. There's a missing husband, Owen, who may have been involved in a financial crime with the tech company he works for, a wife, Hannah, trying to figure out where her husband is, and a step-daughter, Baliey who has a less than perfect relationship with her new stepmom. What could have easily been a stereotypical domestic suspense plot turned out to be so much more,
The chapters were short and punchy; The writing was thoughtful. This novel is told entirely in Hannah's POV through present-tense and flashbacks. This style worked for me and kept me wanting to read more.
Through the book, Laura Dave explores romantic and parent/child relationships. I loved the relationship dynamic between Hannah and Bailey, who have to work and stay together to find Owen and the truth,
I listened to this book on audiobook, and I loved the narrator. I would recommend this to anyone!
This book has been SO buzzed about — being BOTM and Reese's Book Club pick so I was nervous about it being over hyped but I truly loved it! I definitely thought it tried to do... well... a lot in just one book. But I think it had a really strong main character who was likeable and relatable. There was never any huge major mind blowing moments, but it was really sweet and that's not something you usually get in a thriller so it made a much bigger impression on me for that reason.
Audiobook was really well done!
Fasten your seatbelts while reading The Last Thing He told Me. Unlike many thrillers, it not only is jam-packed with suspense but also has themes of true love and the power of Motherlove threaded through the story. I enjoyed everything about the book - the writing, the well-developed characters, and the narration. This is one of a few thrillers where I shed a few tears at the end. I am hopeful for a sequel.
Three and a half stars rounded up. I was hesitant to read this because from the blurb it's obviously much different from her other novels I've read and enjoyed. I'm glad I took a chance on it though because her storytelling is just as solid here, even though it's much a heavier read.
This is a suspenseful mystery with family at its core. It made me consider the age old question of whether or not we ever really know the people we're close to. It also make me think a lot about what decisions I might make if in the characters' shoes. What are we willing to do to keep our loved ones safe? I don't want to say anything else about the plot so you can experience it first hand!
I listened to the audiobook narrated by Rebecca Lowman, and while she did a decent job, I would have expected a more emotional narration. I never connected with our protagonist Hannah. She was telling me what happened, and it was compelling but I didn't feel much.
Overall this was an enjoyable read and I recommend it for readers of mysteries, thrillers, and women's fiction.
