I wanted to like this book but it just wasn’t for me. I couldn’t connect with the characters and found myself losing interest in the plot, the world was really fleshed out tho, so zippy believe that many others will like this novel.

I really enjoyed this story. Particularly like how the progression occurs and how it’s described. The flow and pacing are well done, and the story feels plausible within the genre.
One criticism I have is that there isn’t much of a plot beyond incidences that give the main character reasons to cultivate his talent. That said, this is the first book in the series, so this isn’t a major problem at this stage.

Anyone who is a fan of wuxia stories should give this one a go. While some western audiences might find some terms and writing styles different than they are used to, they should just roll with it. Not everything needs to be a dissertation on a magic system. Plus there are more books in the series to bite into if you like The First Step.

Plus spirit beasts

Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for the eARC!

I liked the premise of the story, but I think it just doesn’t fit my cup of tea. I think my brother who’s into martial arts and stuff would love to read this, though. It’s written well and though, I kinda got turned around a couple of times, it did not hold my attention as well as I hoped it would. I would still love to read the next books in the series, though, because it has so much potential and I think I’d love to reread it at a later time 🙂

I think this is good read, interesting one. I read it in less then 2 evenings. Story about chances, life decisions, learning, growing up. I hope to read book two soon to find out what Wu Ying do and learn next.
