I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.
Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.
However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x
I would rate this book 2.75 out of 5 stars.
The author did a good job of making it really unclear to the reader who they could trust, however, the story also had really unnecessary animal cruelty.
This book was everything I look for in a book. It was so exciting. The plot was fantastic. It really had me on the edge of my seat, and my heart racing. It was very well written and flowed well.
Ooooshhhh this is a goodun. And. Can see she’s written another one. Devoured this sat in the sun whilst recovering from covid. I can’t wait to read her next book. Absolutely brilliant when you find a new talent like this! 5/5.
Thank you for providing me with a review copy of this book. Enjoyed reading, some nice plot twists, would recommend....
An okay read, I had to skim at many instances as it was too dark and abusive for me. The characters were also not likable.
The story is told my multiple characters in the book. Lots of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. Written excellently it had you from the first page right up until the end.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest, independent review.
Evie is in her second year at University and has a one-night stand with Simon, her English Professor. She knows this is off-limits and does not want him to use other students in this way so reports him to HR. But hours later, it is all over the student gossip blog, and they are supporting HIM! Evie knows someone has to teach Simon a lesson...
This starts off slow but later branched off into many directions and POVs, and becomes a little lost and hard to keep track of with so many twists. The pace picks up later on, and there are plenty of red herrings along the way.
Although there are a lot of characters, none of them is particularly likeable. The many characters switch POV regularly and coupled with the faster pace nearer the end, I found I was losing too much concentration at once to enjoy the book enough.
A university campus. Abuse of power after a sexual encounter between a lecturer and a student. Strange housemates, tragic backstories, a suicide on campus last year. All of this should have added up to a good thriller.
But then came the animal abuse. On top of that, I was almost halfway through the book and I found myself still not caring about any of the characters or what happened to them. Everyone was unlikeable, everyone was unreliable.
Still I soldiered on. Until I fell asleep and then was brutally woken up when I dropped my e-reader on my face. That's when I decided to DNF this one. I'm sure that there are many people out there who will absolutely love this book when they pick it up. Sadly, I wasn't one of them.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quercus Books for the opportunity to read the advanced copy of this book.
I am not a fan of buzz words, and tend to avoid them as much as possible. However, in the case of this book, I do need to use some as they are perfectly suited.
The Lesson by Lisa Bradley is indeed a slow burner in every sense. There were parts where I felt that the story was not really going anywhere, until about half way through the book. From this point onwards I was engrossed in the lives of Simon, Jenny, Evie and her friends. As the story unwinds and progresses, I began to wonder as to how unbalanced Jenny really is. There are a couple of incidents referred to in the book, which may be upsetting to readers, and this should be included in the blurb.
Another buzz word to add, is the twist in this book. There truly is one! There were a few moments in the book when I thought I had the plot figured out, and Lisa Bradley has managed to skillfully weave a thread that keeps you guessing, and in my case, I guessed wrong. This is one of those books that I can truly say I was not disappointed in the ending. The story completed its cycle, and rounded off nicely.
This book started off pretty slow but very quickly picked up pace....the story of a university and a student who claims she had a relationship and the twists and turns within. Stick with it and you will be gripped!
Very well written and gripping from the start. Story covers three main characters and the involved dynamics between them, It’s full of twists and turns and at times it can be quite involved and confusing but stick with it as its well worth it in the end.
Even if it's well written and the blurb sounded interesting I struggled as I found it confusing.
Not my cup of tea.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This started off quite easy to follow. Uni lecturer in trouble for a relationship with a student, colleague is caring but also worried about students. Then it just went weird. Sooo much going on that it became increasingly hard to follow and keep up with all the different plot twists. Not my cup of tea.
The story is told by each of the 3 main characters, and as you would expect they all have very different views as to what is going on. It is a well written book and you start to piece together just what is happening as the book progresses. There are some excellent twists to the plot which I really did not anticipate. I did feel however that the ending was just a bit of a stretch to believe but a good tale well told.
This is told from the perspective of three different people and, as the story unfolds, the connection is clear - or at least you think it is. I loved this book. The twists and turns kept on coming right until the end.. It’s hard to be this is Lisa Bradley’s first novel.
The story had the ingredients of a good psychological thriller with complex characters.
With the writing style and plot, other readers may enjoy this but it wasn’t for me.
Thank you to NetGalley UK, the publisher, and the author for my electronic review copy.
This is a university-set thriller. Evie is a second year student who sleeps with her lecturer but then reports him. With a wife and child at home, he denies it. The the accusation is leaked to social media, but who did it? What follows is a twisty ride about who is telling the truth. Very entertaining.
Evie starts her second year in a new university and is sharing a home with other students, who had lost one of their friends at the end of the last year to suicide.
Evie reports one of her professors, and the story kicks off from there.
Interesting thriller of how all of their lives inter-mix and friendships that have been made, and how they all have an effect on each other.
Interesting also on the coercive control/power that the characters have.
Twists and turns through the book to keep you turning the pages.
Enjoyed this book and how it all came together at the end.
A good read if you're looking for a twisted thriller that will leave your skin crawling. Don't put your trust in anyone or you'll be sure to get it broken!
