I have to confess that this type of book is not my favorite. Historical fiction always makes me wonder what was *actually* said and done rather than an author's filtered, creative imagining of what happened. I had hoped that this book would be more historical and less fiction. I love Leonora Carrington's work and am interested in how she developed as an artist, but Ms. Carter's book focused too much on the narcissism and hedonism of Carrington, Ernst, and others in their circle for my particular taste. I also think the book could have been pruned quite a bit. Carrington's time in the psychiatric hospital in Spain is vividly described in her book, Down Below, and her experiences in Mexico with Frida Kahlo and other surrealist painters are wonderfully related in Surreal Life of Leonora Carrington by Joanna Moorhead who was a relative of Carrington and knew her quite well. These books are mentioned as contrast for readers who prefer straight biography. Many people love historical fiction and, for them, Leonora in the Morning Light may be a perfect choice.
