When Sparks Fly is the story told by Avery Spark. She and her two sisters run Spark House, an event hotel. Avery is happy with her life. She co-owns a condo with her good friend, Declan McCormick. They have been friends since college and they have a group of friends from that time. Avery’s parents were killed in a car accident that occurred during a rainstorm. Avery has reservations about driving in the rain because of that.
Avery has the opportunity to make a pitch to her college alumni association for the event hotel. She has made plans with some old friends to meet and attend a game while she is at the college. Declan is going to go with her. She reminds him several times about the event. The night before they are supposed to go, she has a date. This is our first indication that Declan could possibly have feelings for her. He objects to the dress she is going to wear on the date. He thinks it is too revealing when she is going out with someone he doesn’t know. She wears the dress anyway and goes out. Declan goes out that night and gets drunk, picks up a woman, and leaves his car by the bar, and takes an Uber home. In the morning, he oversleeps and then tells Avery that his car isn’t available. She had not wanted to take her car because she thinks she needs new tires and it is raining hard. She feels she doesn’t have any choice but to leave without him in her car.</p>
Declan calls her while she is driving to apologize. While they are on the phone, a guy in a white truck causes a multicar accident, and Avery is taken to the hospital. She has multiple injuries and will need full-time care for several months. Declan announces that he will be the one to take care of her over the objections of her sisters.
It is during the caregiver intimacy where we move into a new phase of their relationship. But that is not the end of the story. They have problems that both need to face before we could move into a happy ever after.
The book is a quick, interesting read. I think that while working to their “happily ever after” they run into some real-life problems that they work through. The wrinkles help the story. I think it is a good fall under the covers book.
Oh I love me some friends to lovers and I really enjoyed the intensity of Declan and Avery. There are some interesting twists and turns that will have you on your toes. There is passion and banter that is classic Hunting. I adored how much Declan is there for Avery when she needs the help. I loved the slow burn between the two of them. There was the right level of angst and more within the pages. This was a great read if you are a Hunting fan!
This was such a fun read, like all her books!Love this author so much so when I got this I started immidiately. The beginning was too funny .
The chemistry between Avery and Declan is something else , these two made this book fantastic. They rocked this story. This is a friends to lovers romance.
This is a heartwarming romance and it's fast paced. You should definitely read it.

When Sparks Fly is the perfect best friends to lovers book this year! I've always been a fan on Ms. Hunting's book and this is just another favorite of hers.
It's an entertaining and fun read between best friends Avery and Declan. They've been friends since college and currently roommates. But when that spark that was hidden between the surface of their relationship ignites, everything changes for them!
There is a good reason why these two are best friends. They have a lot in common and really get each other. And there's also a good reason why neither of them do a serious romantic relationship. Avery had her heart broken by Declan's friend and is happier spending her time at work rather than dating, and Declan... Declan has a lot of emotional baggage from family.
Their spark happens after Avery's car accident and it puts everything in motion between Avery and Declan. But moving beyond of best friends to lovers isn't an easy relationship.
An entertaining and cute romance that made me root for the characters and kept me turning pages.
There's a lot of humour, a fast paced plot and a lot of twists.
Excellent character and plot development.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
I love a good romance book, especially a friends to lovers book. I felt the characters were relatable, the story was good, and I could not put it down. I really enjoyed this book. I was a fast read. I could not put it down.

3.5🌟
Overall this was a light, easy going friends to lovers romance. We had a little drama but nothing too explosive, we had a bit of humour (I snort laughed a fair few times) and we had some steam in a tortuous slow burn. I love friends to lovers and this did it for me due to the fact that they weren't obviously pinning for each other it was just a nice gradual realisation that there was an attraction there and it needed exploring which made the story feel authentic. I liked the family and friends dynamic within the story and hoping we will see more from the Sparks sisters. I liked how Declan owned his mistakes and took action which wasn't easy for him. The couple were so sweet together it was great to see them work things out and learn from their mistakes . If you want a easy going romance with a dusting of humour pick this up.
I absolutely loved Avery and Declan's story! I've only read 1 or 2 other books by Hunting, and this is my favorite of them. I'm not big on thr cartoon/animated covers, but that's neither here nor there.
The story itself was fantastic. I love a good friends to lovers story. It provides background and a foundation for the characters so that it doesn't come off as insta-love/lust.
I really liked how he doted on Avery after her accident, even if it was out of misplaced guilt. And even though they're roommates, having to spend 24/7 with each other after the accident just brings all kinds of feelings to the surface.
I really liked the supporting characters too. Her sisters and the guys that Avery and Declan hung out with all the time. They helped our main characters navigate this unknown territory of feelings.
Also, it was super sexy while also respecting Avery's limitations while she was healing.
When a new Helena Hunting book comes across my feed, I know I need to buy it immediately! She does romance like nobody else and When Sparks Fly is no exception. This intriguing story consists of family drama and romance and mixed together - with a little bit of anxiety on top! Excellent read.
Loved this charming friend to lovers romance about two college friends that chose to be roommates and when one got in an accident the other felt responsible. Through the Guilt while taking care of the friend, chemistry arises and they realize how much they have feelings for eachother
This is a tough one because I love Helena Hunting and there were parts of this that I really enjoyed but other parts that just didn't work at all. I think there should've been several trigger warnings here. I also think that the issues that Declan and Avery faced could've really been worked out a lot easier without all the hubbub. I do appreciate the promotion of therapy and mental health and taking time to work through issues rather than just forgiving/forgetting and moving on, but I feel like the characters were too old to be as immature as they were in certain aspects. Again, there were still some really great parts that I enjoyed and the steam was great--just wish there was more.
Avery and Declan are best friends and roommates. When Avery gets in a car accident after Declan flakes out on their agreement to drive across the state together, Declan feels immense guilt and becomes her nurse and personal assistant. Loving in such close proximity can only lead to sparks flying between the two. But should best friends get involved?
This is a quick, open door romance with a fair amount of steam.
Thank you to St Martins Press and NetGalley for a digital ARC and MacMillan audio for a multiple narrator ALC in exchange for my honest review.
When Sparks Fly by Helena Hunting is the truly entertaining story of Avery Spark and her roommate and best friend Declan McCormick. This friend-to-lovers story was so well done and a story allows the reader to feel the connection and to really feel the SHIFT as these two finally see what has been in front of them for years!
Avery and Declan have been just friends, great friends for years.. so when Declan steps up to care for Avery after an inquiry no one around them is surprised... and than the world starts to shift
Two mean so much to each other but as you can guess once they move to a physical relationship the dynamic shifts big time! Declan comes to the relationship with baggage, baggage he has pushed deep down that he struggles to see what is in front of him... and though I don't usually adore a hero who does not it... in this case, my heart broke for him as his pain was tangible.
Since it is a romance book it is likely not a spoiler to share that Declan does find his way to accepting the love in front of him.... he does grab a hold of this relationship one fostered over the years of friendship. Friendship that makes for an ideal perfect foundation for forever love.
Hunting pushed these characters, pushed for a story that felt true to the story. Declan's character development was amazing to experience, it was like watching a 'boy' or really a man child develop into a man worthy of deep forever love both the giving and receiving of it!
This book contained trademark Hunting humor woven with deep connection....something that I think is so hard for more authors to pull off!
I am so excited for the new book in this world, Starry-Eyed Love!
After Avery is hurt, her best friend and roommate, Declan, decides to step up and take care of her. It isn't long before emotions and needs start getting in the way of their friendship.
I enjoy a good friends-to-lovers story, and this one definitely didn't disappoint. I loved Avery and Declan. They're so good together. There were lots of emotions and angst and tears and it was all just so heartfelt. Highly recommend.
Many thanks to the publisher, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
Sweet Romance!
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed When Sparks Fly! Declan is sexy, a ladies man! This book really drew me in! I wanted to know what would happen next.
The story line and character development was smooth which I always look for. This was a fun sweet read that I really enjoyed!
No spoilers with my review! This was a great book by Helena Hunting and will not be my last.
Overall I give this book 4 golden stars stars stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
Avery Spark is living her best life, after putting some hard work, sweat and tears into turning the Spark House into a premier destination in Colorado Springs, she and her sister are pretty much set working together and doing something they love, that is until Avery finds herself out of commission after being in a car accident. All hope is not lost when her life long best friend Declan volunteers to help care for her as she recovers, however neither expect some old feelings to resurface or for things to get so real so fast! But just as Avery and Declan begin to find their grove their past comes barreling into their almost perfect happy ending, the question is can these two bestie figure out a way to make their relationship work?
••
First off I have to say I absolutely love all of Helena Hunting's books, this lady is insanely talented and always creates a knock out cute romcom! When Sparks Fly was the previous mix of second chance romance meets friends to lovers trope all tied together with some laugh out loud cuteness!
••
Avery and Declan were such cute and relatable characters, getting to see them go from besties to lovers while trying to navigate their feelings and what could have been only made this story all the more amazing. I have to say I loved that we got to see the story from both of their perspectives and see how they are feeling along side each other.
••
I will be honest at first I was not so thrilled with Declan but I will say he did redeem himself by taking care and nursing Avery back to health and doing a lot of groveling! But gosh did things get hot and fast! The chemistry between these two was of the charts steamy! As for our girl Avery, she was great, I loved the relationship she had with her sisters and the passion she had for the family business.
••
When Sparks Fly was an absolute delight to read! This second chance, friends to lovers romance will grab you right from the get go and have you rooting on this couple as they try and navigate their past and present feelings!
This was a very cute, emotionally driven, friends to lovers story that captures the dynamics of sibling and friend friendships perfectly.
I loved this for multiple reasons - Avery is such a relatable character for me, focusing on her work and friendships over anything else. I loved watching her and Declan slowly come to terms with their feelings for each other and I love how mental health/going to therapy was normalized!!
This had me tearing up, laughing at times, and loving that two people who relied on each other for so long were able to understand who they were outside of the other person. Loved!
This is a best friends to lovers book and it was a real delight. Stand alone
There is some suspense in the beginning and the build up to lovers is a slow burn.
Declan and Avery are relatable characters and you soon become invested in their story.
The pace of the story was perfect with the steam coming hard and fast,
Typical of Helena Hunting expect some "moments" where you wonder where her mind goes when she writes - I mean a Hobby Horse competition?!? and of course some laugh out loud moments!!!
If you are new to this author this is a good place to start!
This is book 1 in this series and I eagerly await the rest!!!!
When Sparks Fly is one of the best friends to lovers books that I’ve read recently. Avery and Declan have been best friends since college and both have their own hang ups in relationships but what makes this book so great is the actual relatable struggles. This book had just the right amount of angst and a perfect Helena ending. I loved every page and I am so thankful to have gotten an ARC for this one!! Definitely pick it up the next time you’re in the mood for a great friends to lovers!!
