4.5 stars. This was a slow build, friends to lovers story opening a new series from Helena Hunting. If you enjoyed Shacking Up, I think you’ll love this story as well. Avery and Declan are best friends, roommates and two people that have ignored how they feel about the other since they met. Watching them finally give in and explore was great. Seeing them deal with the complications and demons of their lives, oh wow was it good.
I really enjoyed this friend to lovers romance at to come to terms with their feelings when Avery is an car accident and her best friend and roommate Declan when he puts a one-night stand before her. Soon he has to step up to the plate in the role of caretaker and as they continue to spend more time in compromising positions the attraction they refuse to acknowledge becomes impossible to ignore.
I really liked how Declan recognized and was self-aware that he needed to change and then made the needed actions to change rather than just taking about it for Avery.
I started the series a little backwards and had already knew Averys story end in a happy ever after. I still went on trying to read what I knew was already going to happen but it definately was not a waste of time. I absolutely loved Averys story! I found it sexy, real and adorable. I really enjoy every sister and am invested in their stories. Bravo Helena Hunting
It's a cute and sweet friends to lovers story. I liked Avery and Decklan. I enjoyed the bond between the sisters. I loved the writing but there was something missing for me.
Extremely emotional and masterfully written tale about love and trust.
Excellent choice for everyone, especially for readers who'd like to enjoy a really great friend's-to-lovers story
Helena Hunting writes spice. She writes well. She writes addictive stories. This was no different. In addition to its beautiful cover, I truly loved the love story in this one. Very quick read because of how wonderful I found it to be!
I love Helena Hunting’s writing and a good friends to lovers story so I was excited to pick this one up. It had it’s cute, sweet, and steamy moments, and I loved a lot about the first half, but the last half didn’t work great for me. I will of course keep reading Helena Hunting's books.
This was a fun friends-to-lovers story.
Avery and Declan have been best friends for years and they're also roommates. When Avery gets seriously injured in a car accident, Declan feels horrible and guilty since he was supposed to be with her on the trip. To make it up to her, Declan insists on being her caregiver and their friendship goes to a whole new level as a result.
A fun and entertaining read!
I’m so sorry, I forgot that I had requested this book. My apologies as I no longer read this author.
Not for me. Car accidents are a trigger and there were references and on page scenes. Then there was the love interest…. Not a fan of this one.
If you've read my reviews or know me at all, you know I love me the a-holes. HARD. The meaner they are and the more tortured, the better. However, it seems even I have a line. And this particular hero was that line in the sand for me.
I'll keep this short and sweet. The thing that happens that sets this entire story in motion bothered me. A lot. And while Declan does grovel for a good amount of the story afterwards, I couldn't find it in me to forgive him and move on. Because what he did was that petty and low, that I could look past if they were acquaintances. But the fact that these two are best friends who live together, I absolutely hated his choices.
The other missing link was the chemistry. I felt none of it. It truly felt like the two of them got together because it was convenient. And the thing that set that
And then as I finally start to get on the road to forgiving Declan and this coming to a solid three star read, the major conflict happened. And I. Was. Done. His reaction was just too much, on the tail end of his original screw ups, that no groveling would make it right for me. And I appreciate the author handling it in a better way than just grazing over the issue and having him go to therapy. But alas, it was too little too late. And Avery taking :accountability" in her role in it, was just plain ridiculous.
Suffice it to say, I didn't enjoy it sadly. There were things I liked, but most of it I didn't. And as much as I wanted to love it, the ending simply killed it for me.
But hey, that's just one reader's opinion. If you like friends to lovers romances with an imperfect sort of hero with a slew of issues from his divorced parents, give this a go.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Expect love comes when you dont want it. Lol. That’s my takeaway on this story. It is really cute and charming and definitely a must read!
When Sparks Fly by Helena Hunting is the first novel in the Spark House series. The series follows three sisters as they run their family's hotel and event space. Avery and Declan must navigate Avery's injuries, their emotions, and outside drama as the story unfolds. Readers will be be captivated by this emotional friends-to-lovers romance. When Sparks Fly by Helena Hunting is an excellent start to a new series.
This was a very cute friends-to-lovers romance. I definitely enjoy the aspect of seeing people realize what is right in front of them is what they actually want. This part of the story was great!
I LOVED the first 65-70% of this book! I FLEW through it, was eating it up and then all of the sudden, the rest of the book… fell a bit flat for me. It felt like we were leading up to something good and then… blah. The tension also felt a bit forced, and I also felt very rushed and sort of like it was thrown together quickly to get a hea. I really just didn’t enjoy the last 30% as much. It almost felt like two separate books to be honest.
I definitely enjoy other Helena Hunting books more, but this one isn’t terrible! Overall 3 stars from me!
My first H.H. book, while I own plenty something about this one called my name! I really enjoyed it, I like her writing style, and the chemistry between her characters.
Thank you so much to net galley for sending me a copy of this book. It was very cute bur not for me I hope you love it!
Loved this book. Helena is one of my go to authors and I know I won’t be disappointed. She hit it out of the park with this one. It’s a must read!
4.5 Stars for me on this one. Steam level was good, enjoyed the banter. Liked all the supporting characters as well. But I dislike a miscommunication trope, and this book had a minor moment. But let me tell you the way this one wrapped up was perfect. They didn't just hop right back into old habits. I really liked how Helena wrote about the male MC figuring his shit out first. Don't want to say much more without giving it away besides the HEA.
I was instantly drawn to this book by the cover alone (yes, I am that shallow that I choose a book by its cover) but unfortunately this is a time when picking up a book by the cover alone didn't work.
I liked the overall premise of the story, but I felt it lacked something crucial and the more I read the more I felt that feeling. It's pretty easy to read and I did finish it pretty quickly but I thought that there would be more than there was.
A pretty and simple friends to lovers tory, one which I think would be perfect for those just coming into the genre.,
This book was the description of a wholesome romance. The whole friends to lovers and care taking trope was to die for. The chemistry and genuine love between Avery and Declan was also so well developed and crafted that I devoured this book in one sitting.
Avery is a boy's girl. She lives with her best friend Declan, loves to hang out for football Mondays and plays in a league with Declan and their friends. She also runs an event company with her sisters, which is her pride and joy. Declan and Avery have never tried to have a romantic relationship, however they have always found each other attractive and they haven't been in a serious relationship. When Avery is mandated bed rest and recovery after a terrible accident, Declan becomes her caretaker and they slowly start to become more intimate with each other.
My favorite thing about the story is the intimacy and the genuine love the characters have for each other. You can feel the tension and the friendship that exists between the two and when they cross that line between friends to lovers it was such a delightful feeling.
Both characters are very strong and it was heart breaking to see Avery struggle and Declan blame himself. It was super interesting to see the love Avery has for Declan and how that in turn makes him a better human being, boyfriend and friend. I usually don't like friends to lovers, yet I felt like Helena Hunting did such a good job in portraying a relationship that had been built out of love and respect.
“Thank you for teaching me how to love with my whole heart. I promise I’ll take good care of yours.”
The ending for me was incredible because it was real. They didn't just start dating and all was perfect. They started becoming dependent on each other, which I found to be such a raw and relatable topic. The break up felt necessary and the way that they met and worked on themselves really made my heart full.
