I really liked the concept of this book: Four teens unearth a time capsule their parents buried in high school. But in addition to the expected nostalgic items, they find a hunting knife stained with blood and wrapped with a note that says “I'm sorry. I didn't mean to kill anyone."
What a set-up, right!?
From there the book takes on a lot and that's where it got a bit messy for me. There are multiple timelines and multiple POVs, which at times added confusion instead of building suspense and slowed down the pace of the story.
Alongside the mystery, the book also takes on a lot of topics including: homophobia, racism, romance, COVID-19, and mental illness among others. These are important topics and I love seeing them in YA. But with so much going on, things felt a bit out of focus.
TDLR: interesting premise & set-up, but ultimately not the book for me. I think this will appeal more to readers who aren't regular thriller consumers. I really look forward at checking-out the author's I Hunt Killers series as I've heard great things!
Thank you to the publisher for the finished copy and Netgalley for the eARC. All thoughts are my own.
My sister absolutely loved this book! She can not get over the way that Barry Lyga writes. Since reading she has been raving about Time Will Tell and has been wanting to get copies for all of her friends.
This book had more twists and turns than my fave rollercoaster. And I LOVED this book’s ride!
I love a multi-POV and especially enjoy a shifting timeline. I felt the past scenes really brought the whole story to life.
The big reveal at the end also was a huge shock. I love thrillers because I love trying to solve the crime but with this book, there were so many moving parts and so many twists that I wasn’t able to determine which clues were really just red herrings.
