Loved all of the 80s nostalgia. The music titles made me want to listen to an 80s playlist. All of the characters were well thought out and I really cared about what happened to them. I've heard there are two sequels so I can't wait to find out what happened next.
A fun 80’s throwback, packed with exciting elements ripped from the best retro tropes. Great for fans of older horror movies, music, and sci-fi. Unfortunatly the first episode of the books was the weakest, which made for a slow start. But the book on the whole was a fun experience, and a great read for those craving more nostalgic adventure.
I really enjoyed this one! The cover is what intruiged me the most about the book, and what was written inside delivered!
A fun read, even though it took me months to get through - the first part felt slow and it took me a while to get through.
The 80's aspects and references were fun and the protagonist was pretty cool too. The book is perfect for those who love nostalgia, slasher films, stranger things and all things retro.
(It's not really my thing, which is why it took me some time to finish. However, I do recognize how well written it is.)
this was a fun read, i enjoyed the 80s aspect of the book and the scifi elements. The characters were great and I really enjoyed going on this journey.
Give me anything to do with the 80s and I’ll lap it up, Add music references and you’ve got a winner!
Rock, robots, murder and superhero’s make this book an amazing ride,
Thank you to NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for this ARC.
Jason Stuart has created a time portal back to the ‘80s with this first book in a new series.
I grew up watching my mom’s old ‘80s movies (on VHS (I know: the horror!)), and listening to her music. And Jukebox Hero makes me want to rewatch them right away. This book is also perfect for listening to those old songs while reading. In fact, every chapter has its very own song, and I encourage everyone to listen to the prescriped songs while reading each chapter. It’s a whole other experience!
This book manages to encompas many of the things a ‘90s kid associates with the previous decade. The clothes, lingo and all the tropes from the movies: detentions, superheroes, D&D, gangs, cop dramas and Science Fiction galore.
It’s a YA book, but because it reads like an ‘80s movie, it is also enjoyable for anyone who is feeling nostalgic.
I, for one, am interested in discovering what happens next.
Jukebox Hero is the first in the Rock N' Roll Fable series.
Overall this was a pleasant read. The story was well-thought out, the characters were given some depth, and this book makes a good case to be the introduction into the series.
The first Episode was a bit rough-feeling. In that episode, there was a feeling of the narration voice wobbling a bit, and there were a fair amount of British terms used (think buggered and scarpered) used for a story that was supposed to take place in Louisiana in the 1980s. This chapter also tended to hit the reader over the head with references to classic 80s films such as the Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, etc.
Once the reader gets past this first Episode though, the book really smooths out, and becomes a solid read. The 80s references are still there throughout the book, and are more nuanced, making them a contribution rather than a distraction. The story's pacing, while slightly uneven, does give the story that 80s classic feel. Given the chance, the story is worth the read and a re-read.
I would recommend this book for readers that enjoyed titles such as Snowcrash and Ready Player One.
