This book is full of strategies and ideas that are well-thought-of, and relevant for educators who are in the classroom right now. It stresses the importance of addressing the issues of race and injustice in the classroom with young students. Definitely keeping this as a reference throughout the school year. Thank you so much, Liz!
An excellent and critical book for classrooms and educators. Highly recommended and will definitely adapt into my teaching.
START HERE, START NOW by Liz Kleinrock is "A Guide to Antibias and Antiracist Work in Your School Community" so it is a very important text filled with ideas. My main reservation is that the exercises seemed to be geared to elementary and maybe middle school students so they were too young for my high schoolers. I also felt similarly about Gholdy Muhammad's Cultivating Genius. To gain more perspective as to whether START HERE, START NOW will work for you and your students, have a look at the resources which Kleinrock and Heinemann make available online: https://www.heinemann.com/products/e11864.aspx
I will be ordering my own print copy of this book ASAP. There are so many great ideas with resources... ACTUAL RESOURCES to use. The book is well organized and addresses many things to think about as an educator. The book is great for both first year and veteran teachers and is for all grades levels K-12! The content in this book can easily be implement in any subject that you teach. I will definitely be using this book next school year and diving deeper into it.
My favorite thing about the book is the number of great resources that can be easily implemented!
Thank you, Netgalley, for the opportunity to read an arc version of this book!
Ah, this book is so cool and I really want a paper copy so that I can reference it throughout the school year. This book does a great job of introducing a critical concept in education, providing resources, and then providing additional places to research. While some of the recommendations were highly familiar (ex. I am from poems), others were recommendations that I am excited to implement next year. This is a book that I would like to sit with more and mark up for reference. Highly recommend to new and veteran teachers!
I absolutely loved this book, and I have so much to digest and consider as a teacher. The information is well organized, and the book covers many topics about doing ABAR work and communicating with parents, administration, and students. Each chapter is written in an easy to digest way, and Liz addresses common teacher concerns and shortfalls. She also includes ideas, templates, and further resources. As a science teacher, I especially liked the chapter on STEM classrooms as I think these subjects are often ignored when discussing ABAR work (despite the obvious need in the STEM classrooms). I look forward to implementing this work in my school/classroom and recommending this book to other educators!
There are some really good go to strategies for schools. Every learning community is in a different place and in need of different things, but this book will give some guidance to any group, no matter its place on the journey.
I really liked the sections on incorporating STEM, as I think sometimes content gets left out in the talk about anti racist antibias training
