Straight forward rhyming counting book that ends with a twist to delight audiences. Great title for the beginning of school read aloud for pre-K and kinder classrooms. A first purchase for libraries and classrooms.
🇬🇧 For the little ones, a sweet book and actually known from kindergarten as a finger game or rhyme. 10 small fish swim in a row and in the end there is only one left until they all come out again. Simply lovely.
10 colorful fish are on their way, but do they realize they are in danger? A bigger fish is swimming behind them, ready to gulp them down! As their number dwindles, his size increases – but this may not be the end for the line of fish. This rhyming concept book counts backward from 10 and expands the color palate beyond just ROY G BIV – look for turquoise and gold within this colorful school. The relatively simple text manages to convey the suspense of the chase. More sensitive young readers may not appreciate the peril of the fish, but are sure to enjoy the ultimately silly ending. The brightly colored digital illustrations and cutaway pages are sure to please. Seashells on the endpages will inspire both real and imagined trips to the seashore!
Ten in a Hurry by Lo Cole is a brightly colored, delightful counting book that has a little tension but it is all perfectly resolved by the end of the book. Best for ages 2-5, concepts of numeracy and color identification are cleverly addressed by a dangerous trip across the ocean on the way to "school" for a family of fish. Great opportunities for interactivity by the caregiver or librarian sharing this book with younger kids, including making your hand into a big fish to chomp each fish and countdown from 10 to 1.
Ten In a Hurry is wonderful for back to school in a K-1 classroom. The sea theme is attractive and the illustrations and set up of the book are super engaging for little learners. I can see using this book to introduce the concept of decreasing - subtraction and friends of ten and of course colors - all concepts covered in 1st grade curriculum. Kids won't even realize they are doing math while they follow along as the BIG fish starts eating the little fishes. Thank you to NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Kids for the advanced copy in return for my honest review. Can't wait to add this one to my school library.
This is a simple book but so cute and so funny. My 3 year old definitely approved. I love how it was the littlest of the fish that motivates the rest- a great reminder that we can all choose to make a difference.
A fun counting book that also incorporates colors and rhymes. I read a digital version, but even from that I can tell that the cut away version of the physical book will also greatly add to the reading experience. So fun.
A fantastic children’s counting book. In addition to numbers 1-10, it also explores 10 different colours, and rhymes. Engaging, colourful and a wonderful beginner counting / colour book for young readers. Fans of Eric Carle will enjoy.
A cute little reverse counting and colors book. This would make a great read aloud. My only complaint is that both the goldfish and the yellow fish look yellow. At least in the digital ARC.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. An adorable counting book with excellent bright pictures and kids will love the ending.
Reinforcing counting and coloring concepts in an engaging rhyme cadence, title is perfect for a preschool classroom or a snugly lap time reading. It is vividly illustrated and thoughtful in its message of teamwork. I can see this becoming an instant classic at library story times!
Lo Cole is the author/illustrator of "Ten on a Twig". His new interactive picture book is targeted towards babies and toddlers. It is an adorable counting book that also incorporates colour recognition.
"Ten in a hurry, swimming in a line... Watch out, Red! GULP. Now there are nine."
Kids can watch a school of fish diminish in number as a big predator fish gobbles them up one by one. These little fish are on their way to school and suddenly they become a snack .... until.... the smallest turns and yells out loud, "WE WON'T BE EATEN!" This startles the huge fish making him give a gigantic burp and out pops his nine prisoners. Hurray!
The illustrations are fun die-cuts and I love that the smallest most insignificant fish becomes the brave superhero of the story. Kids will love the playful book and ask for it to be read again and again. I highly recommend it!
A nice counting book with vivid colors, cute rhymes, and an attention-getting storyline. More sensitive kids might be a little upset at the fish getting eaten, but it's not overly macabre and there's always that one kid for whom this plot will be a major selling point!
This would work equally well as a circle time, small group, one-on-one. or independent read and would be a great addition to a classroom library.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
Cute book about colors and counting. It can be an interesting addition to a little one's library. It's simple illustration and rhyming can be fun to read.
At first glance, I absolutely loved the bright colors! It does a great job of reviewing numbers and colors. Each number also has a rhyiming word. This was a really fun book for young kids to predict, count backward, and review colors. Great job!
A cute counting book for very young children learning to count to ten. Through the use of fishes, bright colors, and clever rhymes it can teach numbers one through ten.
