The satanic cult, summer camp story I've been searching for! I liked the feminist twist and after this one I think Lisa Quigley is officially a favorite author. Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC copy!
Thank you to Netgalley for the eARC of Camp Neverland in exchange for an honest review!
We found another winner in the Unnerving Rewind or Die series! Want The Craft vibes? A woodsy atmosphere? A feminist twist/GIRL POWER? Coming-of-age horror? 80 horror film vibes? All packed into a novella that's less than 80 pages? Check out Camp Neverland!
"SLEEPAWAY CAMP meets CARRIE" is what interested in reading this book. This was a great story and was a great part of the Rewind or Die series.
Camp Neverland is a perfect summer read—especially for fans of '80s-'90s horror. Lisa Quigley's story is a fast-paced, fun, young adult horror, if I had to compare, I would say it's like Sleepaway Camp meets The Craft and Carrie. . . If you're fond of the new Fear Street films, you'll like this one.
I definitely did.
Nostalgic and modern at the same time, a great little book for millenials and teens. Highly recommended.
In this unexpected summer camp story we are following Max who takes the opportunity to run away from her life and wants to have a fun summer time away from it all.
Unfortunately for Max as soon as she gets to the camp and even though all the girls seem to be too friendly, she discovers that her bully whom she hoped to leave behind for at least the summer, is also there.
Max starts to seek refuge in her paintings and discovers that these pictures she is painting might have a darker meaning and might be something that could change her life forever.
Even though I was not a big fan of the pacing and a lot of the story was really predictable it was still a dark and twisted story perfect for the summer season.
3.25 stars. I thought there were some good things about this novella, but a lot of it was very unfulfilling. Also, the horror was not high stakes enough for me to buy it. Review to come.
Full review to come soon.
Thank you to Net Galley and Unnerving for the advanced review copy.
This is the first book in the Rewind or Die series that I've read, and it was a fun little bite sized story.
Max has always been an outsider. So when a pamphlet for Camp Neverland shows up in her mailbox, offering an exclusive sleep away art camp and a summer away with like minded individuals, she cannot wait to go.
The moment she arrives she feels home. Her bunkmates are cool, the atmosphere is rad. Everything is going great until she sees her school bully Chuck.
This was supposed to be her oasis, what is he doing here, he doesn't even like art?
When Max's drawings start taking a sinister turn, she realizes that there is power tied into these campgrounds, and as terrifying as the series of murders are, she is exactly where she belongs.
Think The Craft meets Sleepaway Camp, and you've probably figured out the vibe.
This was my first venture into the Rewind or Die series and although this is book 29 don't let that stop you from diving in. This is a stand alone novella, in the style of those great old horror movies of yester-year.
Max is a lonely teenage girl with a passion for drawing, and no friends to speak of. She is ignored by most, and tormented by one in particular. She is looking forward to the end of the school year when she can get a break from being bullied and harassed by Chuck, the boy who makes her life hell. This summer will be special, because she's going away to Camp Neverland, a mysterious summer camp that sounds too good to be true. Now we all know what happens in horror movies when a teen is bullied beyond her breaking point. Especially a girl like Max who may be more powerful than she knows. Bad things happen that's what. Painful, deadly things.
This was a fun read with a nostalgic horror movie vibe. I enjoyed the woodsy camp setting and will definitely be looking into more of the Ride or Die series.
Max is a 16 year old girl who is heading to summer camp in what she hopes will be a reprieve from her regular life. Max has unfortunately been the victim of bullying and is looking forward to spending a summer where no one knows her nickname is Maxi pad. The first night she is at camp, Max realizes that this camp is a bit different. Is Max about to embark on a journey of acceptance in a safe space or was the pamphlet she received in the mail just bait to lure Max into a trap?
I had so much fun reading this book! I loved the sense of sisterhood that the girls shared. I also loved the legend of the land. It was definitely full of girl power!
I received an ARC of this book thanks to NetGalley and publisher Unnverving in exchange for an honest review.
The Rewind or Die horror series is fast becoming one of my favourite sources for good horror. I feel like every installment has something new and interesting to offer, and Camp Neverland is no exception. As always this is a standalone book which tells the story of Max, a girl keen to escape her life of being bullied by going to a mysterious camp for the summer. Unfortunately for her, when she arrives she discovers her bully is also there. Thankfully she has a whole host of new female friends who have her back, though soon she realises the camp is not as innocent as it seems when a grisly death occurs.
This book was so interesting to me on so many levels. The story is somewhat predictable from the outset but the exact nature and depth of the horror is kept hidden, so you never quite feel like you know how it's going to turn out. Max was a very compelling character and I found the way she reacted to the camp and what was going on around her really added to the story.
Like the best horror stories, Camp Neverland has plenty to say about people and society. There are strong feminist themes throughout and these are woven effortlessly into the story. It gave me a lot to think about and even though it is relatively short, it felt like it carried a lot of depth to it because of these themes.
If you are looking for something beyond the typical slasher, Camp Neverland is a great book to pick up. It is a quick and entertaining read with great characters, an engaging story and some classic horror imagery. I am a huge fan of these kinds of books and I can't wait to see what comes out in the future.
Overall Rating: 4/5 stars
In 79 pages, Lisa Quigley provides a quick, brutal book perfect for summer reading. Life is busy and these Rewind Or Die books from Unnerving provide quick bites of nostalgic horror able to be devoured in a sitting.
Camp Neverland is a coming of age story focused on a new arrival at a seemingly idyllic summer camp in Vermont. Quigley is able to quickly endear the MC to the reader and there isn’t a long wait before things get moving. With just enough backstory and character development, readers will find this book impossible to look away from as they relish in the author’s dark imagination.
4.4 stars
Loved Max, she is such a well written character and it was great seeing how she dealt with everything. This was such a good story. Will definitely read more of her books
I volunteered to read this book through netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is well written and the characters are described well. This book is cute. It is set in a summer camp in Vermont, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. I really enjoyed Max's character. It will be in stores on June 24 for $11.49 (USD). When this book comes out go to your local bookstore or preorder it off of Amazon because you do not want to miss out on it.
I really, really enjoyed this book. It was dark and twisted. This book kinda reminded me of Z Movie Horror which I am really a fan of.
I appreciated the trans rep in this book too.
Camp Neverland by Lisa Quigley is a perfect entry into the Rewind or Die series from Unnerving Press. 80's horror movie nostalgia was dripping from the pages as I read. Wonderfully told from start to finish, this is a quick and satisfying read. I even enjoyed that some moments were predictable because as we watched those slasher movies we had a pretty good sense of what was going to transpire. And the boys didn't get to have all the fun this time!
Thanks to Unnerving, Lisa Quigley and NetGalley for providing a copy for review.
Thanks to NetGalley and Lisa Quigley for this ARC.
This book gave me eerie vibes of a summer camp in the Twilight Zone with a modern day premise of Neverland! The camp is a special place for hand-picked gifted children such as Max who has never felt comfortable at school and doesn't make friends easily. Finding acceptance upon arrival at the camp and with her bunk mates she quickly falls under the spell of Camp Neverland. Her dreams of a wonderful summer are soon dashed as a boy who taunted her arrives at the camp and another boy is found dead at the mess hall. Her new friends assure her all is well because after all ... boys are mean like that and sometimes get what they deserve.
Great fast read novella with a steady pace. Part of the Rewind-or-Die series books but a stand-alone so you don't have to read the others to enjoy this one. If there had been a bit more details included it would have been a 5 star for me. I would have loved to see this little one grow up to be a big book with tons more detail.

This is a super quick read, a nostalgic camp-gone-bad eighties movie vibe. Written with a strong feminist voice, this story could have used a little more nuance in the gender divide.
There was lots to love about this though, the visuals in my mind for a woman made of snakes was one highlight.
Overall, it was an easy, fast read. Recommended.
This was fun. Definitely a vintage B horror movie feel to it, a little nostalgic, with a ton of classic horror elements. But the social commentary feels very relevant for today’s world. Overall, good easy read in a comfy chair on a rainy night.
This is the 3rd book from the ‘Rewind-or-Die’ book series, which are like Goosebumps books but a bit darker, this one is about a girl who sees going to camp as an escape from being bullied and forgotten by busy parents, but the bully shows up also, but things are different at camp.
I really enjoyed this book, more than I expected, and I am so relieved the author didn’t go soft on the ending (definitely NOT a Scooby-Do ending).
This is the 29th book (don’t worry you don’t need to read the others before this one) in the ‘Rewind-or-Die’ book series, The series is for people who miss the golden era of VHS rentals from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, those awesome B-grade slasher and monster movies.
I will be getting more of the series, and more from Lisa Quigley.
*Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.*
Well this is a deliciously devious little horror romp!
Honestly, I’m more of a door-stopper kind of girl, so it’s rare that a novella hits me as really satisfying, but this one did.
Lots of old-school horror nostalgia in the camp setting, but fun, modern characters and some serious girl power! I loved our characters and found myself a little too invested in a bit of bloody vengeance.
This was an absolute blast of a read. I enjoyed every page and would happily read the author again!
