I have only read one other Lisa Jewell book before this. I definitely see that she has a certain flow to her stories. They are fast in the beginning, slightly slower in the middle, and incredibly fast towards the end. I read the last 40% of this book in one day. I could not put it down. I keep thinking that I had it figured out and there was always an element that I did not see coming.

There was decent character development, but I think where this story shines is the plot/mystery.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. I thought there was a good atmosphere, and it was easy to follow and keep track of characters.

The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell is a psychological thriller.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Simon and Schuster (Atria Books) and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)
Tallulah and Zach finally go out for a "date-night",  with Tallulah's mom Kim looking after their 1-year old son Noah.  But they don't come home.  When Kim finally tracks down where they went last night, it turns out that they had met a college friend Scarlett, and gone to her house,  a large estate known as Dark Place.  Apparently they called a cab at around 3am,  and were headed home.  They just never arrived.

A year later, Shaun Gray and his girlfriend Sophie Beck move into a cottage on the edge of the forest that border that same estate, which is now empty.  Shaun is going to teach at Maypole College, and Sophie is a novelist who hopes to be inspired to write her next detective novel.  Sophie finds a cardboard sign that says "Dig Here".  She knows that sounds familiar, but can't quite remember where she has seen this before.  She digs, and finds herself in the middle of a real-life mystery.

As Sophie gets involved in the case of the missing couple, she ends up working with Kim, who still achingly wants to find her daughter.  There ae a lot of little puzzle pieces to sort through.

My Opinions:
Well, this was a Lisa Jewell classic mystery.  Plenty of intrigue and twists.  The plot was really good.

The story is about friendship, and love.  It is also about obsession and controlling personalities.

The story is told from multiple perspectives, as well as multiple time-lines.  This kept everything "relatively" straight-forward, and kept the suspense building, as we learn more of what happened before Tallulah went missing.   It may have gone back and forth a little too much, and it seemed a little drawn out.

The characters were well thought out, and quite interesting.  I really liked Kim.

Overall, an entertaining book.  Definitely recommend it for anyone that needs a good mystery with a few twists.

“Tallulah laughs nervously. ‘What about you? What do you want to be?’ ‘Dead, mainly,’ Scarlett replies darkly. ‘Yeah. Dead would be good.’“

It is 2017 and Tallulah, a young Mom, leaves her baby home with her mother and goes out with her boyfriend for dinner. She never returns. Her mother Kim knows that she would never leave her son, so something sinister must have happened. Fast forward to 2019. Sophie is walking in the woods behind the boarding school where her boyfriend just got a head teacher job when she stumbles across a note stating ‘DIG HERE’. As a crime novelist she is intrigued, and as she digs, both literally and figuratively, she finds the story of a cold case, an abandoned mansion deep in the woods, and dark family secrets.

The first 80% of this book was a slowwww atmospheric burn. But that last 20%? Wowza! It is told from multiple POV and with multiple timelines so it takes a few chapters to really get what’s going on. Speaking of chapters, they are short. I loooove me a short chapter, especially with thrillers. It just keeps that page flipping suspenseful feeling high.

I could visualize the gothic inspired and architectural mish mosh of a mansion just sitting there deep in the woods, with its dank basement inside and steaming pool outside. If you love atmospheric stories, or just something creepy for your reading pleasure, look no further!

Thank you to Netgalley, Atria Books, Simon and Schuster, and the author for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The night this book disappeared...

Lisa Jewell might not have the grit of Flynn and Hawkins but man can she write compulsive, suspenseful thrillers. All her books are straight-forward, concise and highly engaging. She doesn’t rely on twisty gimmicks or an avalanche of suspects. She just writes the damn book!

In her latest novel, smalltown MTV Teen Mom parents, Tallulah and Zack, have disappeared after a night out at a friend’s pool party. Tallulah’s mom, Kim, is convinced that her daughter would not abandon her son Noah for any reason. The only problem is there is no evidence, and every kid at the pool party is adamant they left in a cab at the end of the night. One year later the case cracks open after Sophie moves into town. She’s a low-rent detective novelist moonlighting as Jessica Fletcher. Any Murder She Wrote fans?? Will Sophie solve the case and upgrade her Goodreads rating?

The pacing is unbelievable as the book alternates between Tallulah's POV in 2017 and Sophies/Kims in 2018. Each chapter is bite sized and full of clues that will keep you engaged until the two timelines collide in a dramatic ending. You will consume this book faster than Angela Lansbury wrapped up an episode.

If you are looking for a non-graphic thriller, Jewell is the literary gem for you!

Lisa Jewell is my favourite author so this was my most anticipated read of the year and it did not disappoint!

As usual with Jewell, I was hooked immediately and I absolutely devoured this one. She is the queen of short but concise chapters and she has such a knack for using them perfectly to build the suspense.
I also throughly enjoyed the alternating timelines and multiple POVs! While slightly confusing at first, they were so perfect for this one! I was very intrigued by the amateur sleuth aspect and found it extremely compelling that she was a writer herself!

This one also had a great atmosphere and I reveled in the eerie and creepy vibes of the “Dark Place.” Additionally, I loved the inclusion of the boarding school subplot as I’ve been obsessed with my academia thrillers lately!

Ultimately, it has a little bit of everything for thriller fans and I recommend everyone check it out!!

4.5 rounded to 5 for goodreads

Tallulah is a teenage mother trying to do everything. She is a mother, a student, a girlfriend and a daughter. However, her boyfriend Zach is a little possessive. So when Tallulah has an opportunity to slip off and be with one of her friends at her home, The Dark Place, she does, every chance she gets.

When she and Zach both disappear on the same evening and never return for their young child, Kim, Tallulah’s mother is distraught. Kim turns the whole town upside down looking for this young couple. But, no such luck! However, things change when a mystery writer, Sophie, moves into the neighborhood.

Well! Lisa Jewell has done it again. The strange house called the Dark Place…that is all it took to reel me in! Add in secret passages and the weird history and I was hooked. But! That is not all that makes this thriller amazing…these characters…wow! I swear, I wanted so badly to come through these pages and shake some sense into Tallulah. Then there is Zach! I wanted to beat his butt for they way he manipulated Tallulah.

But…the final straw was the twist at the end! Whoever reads a book and skips to the end….DON’T DO IT! It will ruin the whole book for you!

Need a weird and creepy thriller….YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS ONE! Grab your copy today!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest opinion.

Lisa Jewell is one of my favorite auto buy authors. I personally find her books are always a slow burn, but they're still so suspenseful. The Night she Disappeared is a very slow-burn but I was immersed in the entire story. The only reason I didn't finish it in one sitting is because I had to go out to eat with my mother(thanks ma).
.
The Night She Disappeared has dual timelines, and POVs, which alternate between the past and the present. So we get to see what happened leading up to the couples disappearance and how it affected the lives of the people in the present. This was an all around fun read. It was super dark and atmospheric, which I absolutely love in a setting. Basically I have zero complaints, I also don't want to say too much because I think it would be fun to go into this one blind. Also, I'm still laughing so hard over the last scene with Liam. I did not see that coming. BRAVO and yay for my new Lisa Jewell book!

The Night She Disappeared is the latest stand alone thriller by Lisa Jewell. I was excited and grateful to receive access to an advance reader copy from the publisher through NetGalley, but honestly struggled to finish it.

Teen mother Tallulah Murray and a host of other unsympathetic characters become complicit in a series of lies and deceptions. Addictions, mental health, and other challenges are uncovered through the story, told through two timelines set during 2017 and 2019.

The pace of the first four fifths of the book is slow and the details seem laborious. For me, the counter story of the new head teacher and his detective novelist live in girlfriend add an air of “cozy mystery” the plot and

3.5 to 4 stars!

*CW: rape, drugging, gaslighting, emotional abuse

While there were quite a few sus sentences/statements thrown around, I fairly enjoyed this one!

I have to admit that I was a little hesitant to read this one because I absolutely despised Lisa Jewell’s last two books, but alas, this one I not only genuinely enjoyed, but reminded me a bit of my all-time fav ‘Then She Was Gone’.

This one was almost quite as sad (but sad nonetheless) and is rooted in a mother/daughter relationship storyline that I love reading. This story from Kim’s perspective was quite a journey and I hurt alongside her from the second she knew something was up. Lisa really knows how to pull at the heartstrings and I find it’s her strong suit.

There are some places where the story lulls a bit, and honestly a perspective I could’ve done without, but overall I could not stop turning the pages fast enough to see how this all came together.

Of course this one is a little predictable, but Lisa gives you everything up front (or so I feel), and the enormity of this puzzle is a game all of her own. You’ll be hooked!

Lisa Jewell has real talent for making me care about all of her characters, good and bad, warts and all. Every year she delivers another mystery, and I’m always surprised by the way she can build a world around a straightforward concept.
One night, a pair of young parents Zach and Tallulah, disappear following a long night of partying on a country estate. The majority of the guests there that night, specifically the owner of the home Scarlett, disappear in their own ways, and Tallulah’s mother Kim is left seeking answers. A year later, Sophie, a crime writer, moves to the village and becomes entangled in the mystery.

This book had shades of the author’s other novel, When She Disappeared, but only really in the premise. Tallulah’s story in the past blends perfectly with Sophie’s investigation in the present. I had a hard time getting into the initial start, but then I could not put this book down. Every Lisa Jewell Book becomes My Favorite Lisa Jewell Book, and The Night She Disappeared is no different. It’s the perfect way to cap off the summer, a creepy, clever little mystery to kick off fall.

Thanks to Net Galley and Atria Books for the ARC!

Jewell does not disappoint in her latest thriller. Story switches from pre, during and current times.
Tallulah and Zach are just 19 yrs old and parents of baby Noah. Gone out for a date night, they have never returned home one night in June 2017. The following year, a headmasters girlfriend (who writes detective novels) finds a mysterious sign in her new garden that says “dig here”. What she finds begins to unravel the year old mystery of where the couple went…
With Tallulahs mom, friends from the college and the local detective- the mysterious story gets more and more interesting by the minute.

I just finished this book with a deep breath needed and a tear in my eye. In typically Lisa Jewell fashion nothing is what it seems.

On a beautiful summer night two teens go missing. The last people to see them are posh kids at a big house in town called Dark Place. No one seems to have any answers as to where the teenagers might have gone and the other kids at the party are keeping tight lipped. So what really happened that night? Where are Tallulah and Zach?

The story is told in multiple POVs as well as told in different time periods.

This story gripped me pretty early on. It was a slow build in the beginning but once it picked up steam I couldn't put it down. I was so invested. The character building was done so well that by the end I was so attached to some of the characters while I thoroughly despised some as well. It really explores human relationships and what some of us will do to stay within our emotional comfort zones and what some will do to break outside of them.

If you like a bit of who dun it, family drama, and spooky houses... this is right up your alley .

The Night She Disappeared

Lisa Jewell has done it again! I am in awe of this author who can juggle 3 timelines, multiple points of view, and a complex plot, and wrap them all into a stunning mystery novel.

This is a story that feels very current, involving teenage unmarried parents, a single grandmother raising her daughter’s toddler, and some entitled teenagers with amazingly oblivious wealthy parents.

The timelines explore:
2016: The complicated friendship and actions of teens Tallulah, Zach and Scarlett.
2017: The dedication of Kim, the grandma, waiting for Tallulah, her daughter and Zach, parents of Noah, to return from an evening out—and when they don’t, searching relentlessly for the truth.
2018: Sophie, the mystery novel writer, who begins to “dig” into the cold case of the missing teens.

Once I got the rhythm of the 3 timelines, I found it especially effective at fleshing out the characters. The author does her usual astonishing deconstruction of said characters’ make-up and motivations. Kim, the grandmother, is an especially sympathetic character. The teens often said and did some head-scratching things, which made them believable and true to their age. The story entices the reader with clues left in all three timelines, and challenges the reader to solve the mystery.
This is a slow-burner thriller, with some red herrings and clever twists. This is another gem in Lisa Jewell’s crown of literary achievements!

Thank you to Atria Books and NetGalley for the ARC. This is my honest review.

Lisa Jewell is back with another book and you all know I HAD to read and review it! This one was good and I loved the odd, darkness to the plot. If you are new to Jewell and her works hit that search bar on the right corner of this page to browse through the previous reviews I have posted. You won't be disappointed.

This book is told from three different perspectives in three different eras. Kim's 2017 point of view, Sophie's 2018 point of view, and Tallulah's 2016 point of view. All very relevant to the plot and all lend a unique insight to the mystery. Each character is expertly placed and described so the story just flows effortlessly with every page turn.

We, the reader, slowly get fed little details here and there- a hint of something that doesn't quite fit just yet and our brain stores it away for later. It's that slow but addicting suspense writing that Jewell is so good at. My favorite reading perspective was Tallulah, as we get a side of her that isn't shown from her mom, Kim's, perspective. As a mom and daughter it was just intriguing to read how what a a mother sees isn't what actually is going on in a daughter's life. Secrets are kept and what is presented on the outside doesn't match what is actually happening in someone's life.

The ending was nothing like I expected to be! A shocking surprise to say the least! I do love the intricacy of it all... I don't want to say too much. It is best to go start reading this book knowing as little as possible and you know I never give spoilers!

"The Night She Disappeared" is set to be released here in the U.S. on September 7, 2021 so pre-order now! This was a 5 star read!

Thanks to Netgalley and Atria books for sending me an advanced digital copy to read and give my honest review!

First, I have to tell you, I am a Lisa Jewell fan. I have read her books in the past and I have enjoyed that. That is the first reason why I wanted to get my hands of a copy of her new book as soon as I could! The next reason was because after reading the synopsis of the book, I was already sucked in! The book sounded absolutely AMAZING! I can assure you, it did NOT disappoint!
.
This story is told in three different timelines and three different point of views. These three characters are: Tallulah (the missing girl), Kim (her mother), and Sophie (the new head teacher’s girlfriend). Tallulah and Kim’s story is set in 2017, the year Tallulah went missing, and Sophie’s story is set 2 years later in 2019. At this point in time, the missing persons case for Tallulah has gone cold until Sophie stumbles upon the “Dig Here” sign nailed to a tree in the woods near her new home, which blows the case wide open.
.
This story has so many twists in turns. It will leave you guessing and it promises for some shocking revelations! I was on the edge of my seat and desperate to know what happens next. I truly loved the perspective of all three characters. I found them all relatable, down to earth women.
.
This has been my favorite Lisa Jewell book to date! I highly recommend you pick this one up as soon as you can! @onceuponabookclubbox will be having it in their adult box this coming month and promises to have some amazing gifts!! Use my code, OneToFiftyTwo10, to save 10% on your box!

Once again, Lisa Jewell has completely pulled me in and made me feel like I was living in this countryside town in the center of all the drama! Lisa definitely writes some complex and entertaining characters and that truly makes a book for me! My favorite character may have been Sophie, a writer that recently moved to this town and finds herself right in the middle of the investigation into two missing teens.

THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED was such a good story and had a really great ending. I did see part of it coming but there were still some shock factors for me and I enjoyed seeing it all play out! ✰✰✰✰

The Night She Disappeared was the first book I've ever read by Lisa Jewell. It was so amazing! It had me guessing the entire time. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I was wrong, very wrong! The characters were so real and beautifully believable. I don't have a single thing that I didn't love about this book.

I have, in fact, purchased a physical copy and am currently going back to read Lisa Jewell's previously published books:) I don't know why I waited so long.

Up to date, Then She Was Gone was my favorite book by Lisa Jewell, but The Night She Disappeared is my new favorite--maybe because it has a very similar vibe with its emotionally heartrending, tragic family drama at its core about a mother and daughter, as well as a young mother of a baby son.

Kim is watching her baby grandson when her teenage daughter Tallulah and boyfriend Zach go on a date that they never come home from. Kim knows something bad happened to them both even though others keep trying to convince her that the two probably ran away to escape from parenthood. She knows her daughter too well; Lulu would never leave her baby unless she had no choice.

Two years later, Sophie, a cozy mystery author, moves into a cottage on the grounds of a boarding school with her boyfriend the headteacher. Lulu and Zach still haven't been found and one day, Sophie finds a clue in the woods nearby that makes her start looking into their disappearance herself.

The story is told in dual timelines from 2017 and 2019 with multiple POVs, and I think Jewell really excels in both. In this book, she brings them together very seamlessly to construct a gripping plot with wonderfully executed characters, several that I just loved as people, especially Kim. As a mother, my heart hurt for Kim when her daughter Tallulah disappeared without a trace, and I know that this is the first Jewell book that I actually cried while reading. I felt the book leaned more on the mystery side than thriller but for me, that made no difference because it was completely unputdownable. Overall, I think Jewell fans will love this one and recommend you put it on your fall TBR!

I really enjoyed this one!
Lisa Jewell never disappoints.
She is one of my Queens 👑.

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for my advanced copy of The Night She Disappeared.

What I Enjoyed-

*The Writing- Lisa Jewell books are always unputdownable. I get sucked into her stories so easily and usually finish them within a couple of days. I've been working a ton lately and that is the only reason it's taken a bit longer.

* The Multiple Timelines- There are 3 times at play in The Night She Disappeared. The Timelines are a bit shuffled and it took me a minute to get used to them. I thought it was a brilliant way to tell the story. (It kind of reminded me of the TV Show Cruel Summer. )

*The Mystery- I just had to know what happened to Tallulah and Zach.

*The Uniqueness- Every Lisa Jewell novel has been so unique and sometimes Bizarre. I will always look forward to reading her novels.

Overall- Highly Recommend. Can't wait to see what LJ does next.
