Although I generally don’t like slow burn thrillers, Lisa Jewel just does it so well I can’t help but love everything she writes. It took a minute to understand the 3 time lines and how, or if, they all fit together, but once I did, it was so well done.

Talullah is a young mother, who one night, goes our with her boyfriend and neither of them return. The police don’t seem too concerned at the beginning, but Kim, Lulas mom, knows her daughter and knows she would never leave her young son Noah behind. The 3 perspectives are from Talullah leading up to the disappearance, Kim, from the night of the disappearance and finally Sophie, who is the new head teachers wife and finds the first clue to what happened that night 18 months ago.

Lisa Jewell writes a great thriller and the endings are always slightly different than I would guess. I completely recommend The Night She Disappeared to anyone who likes a thriller escape. I sometimes am frightened by her, though, so that's fun. This was a great study in how families feel when someone goes missing. The difference between the two families is striking, but seems true to life. 4 stars, recommend.

A young couple, Tallulah and Zach, goes out for a night on the town, leaving their baby with Tallulah's mother, Kim. But when the kids don't return, Kim is left worrying about her daughter, while caring for her grandson. Nearly a year later and there still has been no sign of the young couple. A writer moves into a cottage with her partner and finds a handwritten sign that says "DIG HERE." It stirs up the case that has gone cold and gives Kim back the hope that she has long since lost. Will Kim ever get the answers she needs about her daughter? Will baby Noah ever see his parents again?

The Night She Disappeared is a tale about the wealthy and privileged and how they live together in a quiet countryside village. There is a prestigious private school, an abandoned mansion, and a creepy forest involved trying to make for a "gothic" feel, but it fell short of that gothic feel. Tallulah is a good kid who has been with her boyfriend for years. Yeah, Zach got weird when she found out she was pregnant, but he eventually stepped up to be in their lives. As the book jumps around from the past to the present, the reader realizes that Tallulah and Zach did not have the relationship that Kim thinks they do. It was also clear that Kim did not know everything that was happening in her daughter's life. The ending seemed a little farfetched, but it could have been worse. CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS

Bottom Line - Lisa Jewell is becoming a juggernaut in the psychological thriller world, while The Night She Disappeared was not as gripping as previous books, but it was still a great read.

I found this thriller a little slow to get moving, and unlike other books I have read by Lisa Jewell, it took a long time to for me to get invested in the story and its characters. In fact I think I took a month-long pause around the mid-way mark before I picked it up again and finally finished it.

The story jumps back and forth between present day and two years before when Talullah first met and started a secret relationship with Scarlett. I thought the timelines and writing were done well, I didn't find it confusing going back and forth in time, but there were a few times that I thought Jewell wrapped up a loose end with a far fetched resolution. And unnecessarily so. I'm ok with some neat and coincidental resolutions, but I struggled to get past Sophie not remembering that the "Dig Here" sign was featured in her first book. It kept coming up, and I found it distracting. And I didn't even think there was any benefit to the storyline for her to forget, because obviously some one wanted her to find the ring, so why not reveal the connection as soon as she sees the sign? And I thought that Liam obviously would have mentioned the coincidence after he read Sophie's first novel and realized there was a connection. I don't think it was ever really explained why Sophie didn't immediately make the connection herself, just neatly ignored.

** Spoiler** I had an idea of how things were going to turn out early on -- just based on the title of the book I assumed that Talullah would be found alive, and by the time the secret door at the bottom of the staircase was revealed I knew that would be where Zach was found, but by then I was really into the story and still felt that the story unfolded with suspense and anticipation in true Jewell fashion.

There's no question that Jewell is a gifted writer with an incredible imagination. I find her books always have a unique plot, and this one was no different. I enjoyed this book, it just wasn't my favorite.

Probably my favorite Lisa Jewell book. Very strong writing and you feel attached to all the characters.

Interesting setting, likeable characters, a bit unbelievable in parts and a tad complicated, but enjoyable.

Thrillers/Mysteries are a hit or miss (mostly miss) as I tend to find them lacking in plot and depth. But I like how fleshed out the characters are in THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED, and Jewell keeps her readers guessing. It was the perfect book to read for a fast palate-cleanser.

💍THE NIGHT SHE DISAPPEARED❌
By Lisa Jewell

4⭐️

This was my first Lisa Jewell novel and it did not disappoint. I will say, this book was quite the slow burn.. however, not a bad thing! This story kept did me interested the entire time and it really started to rev up around 70% of the way through! I definitely plan to read more of Lisa’s books in the future!

This story is told from 3 different POV’s, which I always enjoy. It’s very cool to see 3 different angles of a story come together in the end. Just when I was thought this story was getting predictable, it took another wild twist!

Thanks so much to @netgalley, @atriabooks and @simonschusterca for an eARC copy of The Night She Disappeared to read in exchange for my honest review.

4.5 stars

I thoroughly enjoyed Lisa Jewell’s latest thriller. Told from multiple POVs over a two year period, we follow Kim’s search for her missing 19 year old daughter, Tallulah. Tallulah is a teen mom going to college, living with Kim. Sophie is a writer and moves to town. Sophie finds clues and gets involved in Tallulah disappearance.

I highly recommend reading The Night She Disappeared.

QUICK TAKE: I've been an LJ downer in the past few years, but this felt like a big return to form, if not a next step in the evolution of LJ as an author. She does a nice job connecting three timelines here and establishing multiple characters. The story is propulsive and twisty, and I thought the ending was really dark. If I had any issues, I thought the headmaster girlfriend storyline felt a little out of place.

This 400+ thriller was such a yawn and took me forever to get through. Let me just say that I LOVE Lisa Jewell and this is the ONLY book I didn’t love by her.

The plot moved way too slowly, there were almost no twists, and by the end I didn’t even care how it would finish.⁣ Basically, the main character, Tallulah, and her boyfriend go missing. The story alternates between past and present with three main POVs, like many of Lisa Jewell’s books, but without the suspense and cliffhangers.

I found this to be a little predictable. It reminded my of her earlier novel, Then She Was Gone. It did keep me interested even though I knew what was coming,

Lisa Jewell did it again. I have read every single one of her books all the way back to Ralph's Party - does that make me a superfan? Either way, Lisa could write her next novel on napkins and I would still read it.

I love Lisa Jewell! This book is great. Just when you think you have things all figured out...you don’t! She keeps you guessing until the end. Lots of suspense and suspicion in a well thought out plot.
