3 Things I loved about The Night She Disappeared
The cold case, an abandoned mansion, family trauma, and dark secrets lie at the heart of Lisa Jewell’s remarkable new novel. She delivers us again a modern out of the box, not what you might expect psychological suspense by creating compelling multidimensional characters while staying away from expected gender roles. She weaves an exciting, well-layered absorbing story while playing on overused tropes like gone/missing girl, poor/rich girl, and victimizing women. At one point, I thought, here we go again with those tropes, and then reminded myself this is Lisa Jewell, and I had nothing to worry about with those tired tropes going where I expected them to. I knew she would have something unexpected in store for me. My mind was racing with how she would pull the story together, and I was not disappointed.
The not what you might expect characters ~ Tallulah is not your typical poor girl; she embraces her responsibilities as a mother while attending school. Rich girl Scarlett is not your regular mean queen bee sporting the latest fashion. Through Kim, we see how devastating the effect missing person cold cases have on the lives of families. The story centers around Kim’s grief over the disappearance of her daughter. She is determined not to give up on Tallulah, and we see her struggle with that grief while caring for her grandson Noah. Noah is not your typical perfect baby but a realistic one with all the challenges to go with it. I loved the dynamics between him and Kim that added a heartwarming natural feel to the story.
The creepy exciting settings like that combines two of my favorites mansions and boarding school
3 Things I didn’t love as much
Like any good psychological suspense, the story is slowly built while creating a suspenseful gripping plot and tension between the characters; however, it was not as tightly woven as I would have liked and I wanted the story to move forward faster
I was not that invested in Sophie and her relationship with her boyfriend. I didn’t think her involvement added much to the story and felt her character was convenient.
Hmm, I can only think of two
3 reasons to read this one
If you are looking for a compelling story with elements that move beyond the standard of what you might expect, thriller and characters.
A well-layered, slowly building not what you might expect story with enough suspense and tension to keep you invested in the story and characters with exciting twists and turns.
You are a Lisa Jewell fan, or you want to read something from an author who is moving forward with our times.

Super suspenseful - this was one of those ones that you can't put down and read in one sitting.
Lisa Jewell is a master of mystery and suspense!
Thanks, NG, for my galley!

I enjoy Lisa Jewell's books, including this one. But, it definitely seemed to me to be a slower read. I also found that I wasn't really invested in the story or characters. Good book, but not my favorite of this author. Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for this digital arc.

Jewell just does not disappoint. I was looking for a creepy thriller with a dual timeline and this one delivered! I loved the way this one unfurled, and that it didn't shy away from the horror side of the tale. And also has you thinking, what would you be ok with to get what you want? It definitely is one to read with the lights on!

📚This was my most anticipated end of the summer read. Lisa Jewell is one of my all time favorite authors and I wouldn't have missed this book for the world!
After a night out, a young couple, Tallulah and Zach, disappear without a trace leaving behind their infant son and Tallulah's mom, Kim, to care for him. Kim's desperate search for her daughter reveals that the couple met with some posh kids from the nearby college right before going missing, but no one has any clue as to where they have gone after the party. A year later, a detective novelist, Sophie, and her head teacher boyfriend move into the cottage on the college grounds, and the clues begin to emerge bringing the disappearance case of Tallulah back to life. Kim and Sophie are determined to "dig up" the truth...
Another chilling thriller from the queen of mystery and suspense definetly kept me up at night. This page-turner made me keep guessing till the very end. I was really really hoping for a positive outcome, just like you would in any missing person story despite the odds. Lisa Jewell paints compelling, relatable characters, and I love her books for that. There is a dark element present in the setting and some of the characters which makes the dual story line, popular with the author, even more exciting.
Wow, this book definetly did not disappoint! The last few chapters and the way their format stands out from the rest of the narrative, blow your mind, revealing all the first-hand witness accounts. 4.5/5 ⭐ from me!

An atmospheric, dark, twisty slow burn of a book. The Night She Disappeared isn't a quick read, per say, but it is a gripping psychological mystery (I know it is cataloged as a thriller, but the pace does not lend itself to that label), a solid read for mystery fans, especially those who love when the setting of a book is a character in and of itself.

This is an author I really enjoy. She keeps you guessing, but in a subtle way. A enjoyable read all around.

The mystery is sneaky, sly, and twisty. The real beauty of Lisa Jewel's stories are the people she writes about; these are people we know, people we have coffee with, people from work, and so we grieve, we stress, we commiserate as they make all the worst choices with all the best of intentions.

Lisa Jewell just keeps getting better and better. This was my favorite or her so far! Definitely a slow-burning mystery but the story was oh, so so, good.

This was a great thriller. So many twists and turns. It did get a little slow in the middle but aside from that I truly enjoyed it. I am realizing that I am definintely a fan of Lisa Jewell's books!

Lisa Jewell can do no wrong in my mind. The Night She Disappeared had me hooked from the very first sentence and kept me hooked until the very end. I liked the dual timeline that allowed us to see what was happening now and what actually happened to Tallulah the night she went missing. There were some crazy twists in this book that caught me off guard. She does it again!!

The queen of thrillers continues her reign. I dragged my feet on starting this one because I felt like Lisa Jewell's books have a similar formula each time but I was so pleasantly surprised by this one! The atmosphere, the twists! Such a solid read.

This was my first Lisa Jewell and I"m hooked! What a great nail-biter. Like-minded readers of this type of suspenseful thriller loved it and recommended even more of them.

I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I always enjoy this author’s books. They’re well developed and has some good twists. This book had at least three timelines to follow, so you really have to pay attentions.

5 Stars!!
I'm always thrilled when a new novel from Lisa Jewell is released and after reading the description for this novel I was even more excited.
I loved the characters and the storyline had me hooked right from the start. I really didn't want to put this book down once I started reading. I remained gripped throughout the story and really liked how it all came together in the end.
Another addictive and thrilling read from Lisa Jewell! Can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

🌙 With multiple point of views and three timelines, this book makes a great mystery/thriller that keeps you guessing. I’m going to quite honest and say this book confused the heck out of me at the beginning. The timelines really confused me and I had to think about what was going on. I eventually got the hang of it and started understand everything. I will say this is a very slow paced book. It felt like it dragged at times, but it was definitely worth the read.
🌙 To no one’s surprise Lisa Jewell is a master when it comes to writing thrillers. The “twists” and “turns” weren’t too shocking in my opinion and I did see part of the ending coming, however, I still really enjoyed this story. I actually connected with most of the characters, I love a good parent to children bond and Kim was just a gem. The tension and mystery was all there and I really liked this one!
🌙 Overall, The Night She Disappeared was such a great thriller. It took me awhile to get into but I instantly got hooked when I was understand the timelines. I really enjoyed how well structured this book was and I would definitely read more from Lisa Jewell. The ending was my absolute favorite. It wasn’t too “shocking” in my opinion but it made me emotional for some reason - weird. Anyways, go into this one without knowing much, as I would say with every thriller, and definitely check it out!!
✨ Thank you so much @atriabooks and @netgalley for the gifted book!! ✨

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25/5
I love a slow burn if the execution is done well, and this one nailed it! Even with the slow burn, I was invested in this book! It kept my attention enough to keep wanting to pick it up. Jewell is an excellent writer and I really need to read more by her! I loved the ending of this book and love the wow factor!

I always enjoy Lisa Jewell's books, but this was one of my favorites in a while! I loved the alternating timelines that slowly revealed the truth behind the story. I also really enjoyed the interwoven characters stories. Such a fun read!

When I open a book by Lisa Jewell I know that I’m in for a rewarding reading experience. “The Night She Disappeared” was an engrossing mystery/psychological thriller.
The characters were very well drawn and the writing skilled.
The setting, a chocolate-box Surrey village, was the perfect backdrop for the boarding school and old manor house.
This was a missing persons mystery, yet it was more complex than that. Many threads were woven into the story, all engrossing, yet the author managed to end the novel with all those threads woven into a tapestry – with a denouement that satisfied my thirst for justice and explained all.
Highly recommended to all those who enjoy an expertly crafted psychological thriller. Lisa Jewell never disappoints. I’ll be on the alert for her next novel.
