This was a DNF for me. I love the Tangled movie - this just wasn't cutting it for me too. The writing style was too juvenile for me - which is fine, just not for me! Would probably be great for a younger reader.

*Note: I received a ARC of this book from the publisher and it will not affect my thoughts or feelings towards it*
Where do I start when talking about this book? If I were to sum up this book in one word I would say fun. I felt like the author did a great job with the character development with all the characters but especially Rapunzel. Watching her go from having faith in her mother to slowly putting the pieces together how horrible she was treated was heartbreaking to read. I enjoyed all of the new characters that were added for this twisted retellings as well. My favorite new character has to be the goodwife. Which I won't go into because spoilers. I have seen other people in reviews not enjoy the "interruptions" from the kids in the hospital similar to the Princess Bride but I actually enjoyed them and never felt like they suddenly appeared but were actually nice pauses and used as a great transition. I also really enjoyed how the twist and how it changed the story and where it went from that. My only problem with this book is a common problem I have with this author with thier pacing. The beginning was a slow start to get into only picking up around 20% in. Then the ending felt a tad rushed once we towards the 85% mark. Overall I had a fun enjoyable time with this.

Despite taking my sweet time reading this book, I liked it a lot.
There are a lot of references to the Disney movie through the book, of course, but I think I enjoyed the twists and changes that the story had to make it different. And I'm not just referring to the change of the main plot, but I feel that the characters had a more mature or adult-like personality and perspective.
Tangled is probably my second favorite Disney princess movie, right after Mulan, and it was fun to see the points in the story where both versions converged. Even though some things don't appear to be a reference at first, they come to light later in the book. The magic in it is more complex, as Rapunzel's hair has more abilities than we can expect. I would have liked to see more variety on the powers that were shown, but I guess the ones we see are the ones needed to move the story along.
Although I wouldn't have been mad if there had been more details on Rapunzel's work as a sorceress in the epilogue, for being such a big part of the book it did not seem to take much relevance in her life after her adventure.
Also, I can't help but feel cheated out of Gothel's death. We really should have seen more of that.

I am a huge HUGE Disney Freak. I love all of the Twisted Tales and takes from Disney that come out. However, this one has to be one of my favorites (the fact that I loved Tangled helps!)
I was thrilled to get my hands on this book and to be honest, I actually really liked it. I have learned from the other Twisted Tales not to go into the book expecting the characters to be 100% as they were in their respective movies. There always is a little something different about them. (Hence twisted tale)
Yes Rapunzel was almost exactly like her character in tangled (in fact, I literally heard Mandy Moore's voice while reading it"
Flynn though, he was written a little differently and I did like it. Gina was a very nice addition to the story although at first, I didn't think I was going to like her much at all.
I know a lot of people didn't like that this was a story within a story (think Princess Bride) but I loved it. The thought of a brother retelling his favorite story to his sister....there was something very heartwarming about that.
Thank you so much to #Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC. I really enjoyed it!

This is the first Twisted Tale that I’ve read. As enjoyable as this Rapunzel retelling was, it definitely started to drag in the end and could have been a bit shorter, in my opinion.
Rating: 3.5*

I love these type of stories that are a little twist off of what we already know. This was one just as entertaining as previous twisted tales and did not disappoint with the new aspects thrown in!
Thank you Netgalley, author, and publishers for this copy in exchange for an honest review!

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for my.copy of this book.
I am glad I was lucky enough to get to read this! It's just as good as the rest of them.

I loved how much this one stayed so true to the Disney Movie and Show, but it still had such a unique twist in true Twisted Tale fashion. The dual storyline, with the siblings, took a little while to get used to but was a quirky and heartwarming addition to such a familiar story.

"What Once Was Mine" is a twisted tale in which Rapunzel's hair has the power to kill rather than heal. Things are changed around in small ways, while minor details from the film are largely expanded on throughout this novel.
A fantastic book!

I loved this so much! I always love reading the what if’s Disney tales to see all the different takes on my favorite stories! I loved the take on “dark rapunzel.” I couldn’t put this down!

I love Tangled, like love love, it is one of my all-time favorite movies, I adore the soundtrack (I See the Light, is such a great duet), and Flynn and Rapunzel are so adorable together.
So when this came out on Netgalley I knew I had to request it, let me tell you this book did not let me down. First of all, this concept was fabulous, the idea that instead of healing Rapunzel’s hair could kill is so intriguing and interesting, I loved how seamlessly it blended the moonflower and the sunflower into the story and other aspects of the movie. I also adored the inclusion of Gothel and the king and queen, the small details like this made the story so much better.
I also loved how the story was told through the eyes of a brother telling it to his sick sister and we got to see their world. The POV shifts were incredibly well done and the reader could connect with all the sides of the story. I loved seeing Rapunzel develop as a character and really grow into herself and express herself as a person and as a friend. Overall this book was amazing and I also started watching the tangled TV series because I want to see more of my favorite characters.

Thank you to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this novel, and I’m excited to read the rest of the novels in this collection. This reimagined one of my favorite Disney stories in a way that I had never thought it could go. Having the backstory of the brother telling his sister a story was a great backdrop for this retelling of a classic tale. I honestly ended up liking this a lot more than I thought I would. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves Disney or just loves a good story.

I had high hopes for this book because I absolutely love Rapunzel but I felt like this book was lacking! I’ve enjoyed the other titles in this series but felt a struggle to actually finish this one!

I loved this book so much, I’m practically gushing over it! This series is so creative and wonderful.

I didn't think it was possible to hate Mother Gothel more than I did in Tangled. That woman is terrible, cruel, and evil. Yet, after reading What Once Was Mine, that version of Mother Gothel seems like a mildly unpleasant kidnapper compared to this version. Rapunzel is, thankfully, her optimistic, caring self - despite believing that her hair will kill all those around her. This is a more rebellious, strong-willed Rapunzel, more skeptical and less hopeless romantic. But all of our favorite friends are there, albeit in different forms or incarnations. This is a great addition to the Twisted Tales collection. And I still stand by my unpopular opinion that Tangled is a better movie than Frozen!

Braswell is probably my favorite Twisted Tale writer. In this twisted version of Rapunzel’s story, we learn what would have happened had Rapunzel partaken of a different, darker flower as a child... would she still be the same? This book also has new characters and some historical allusions that make it even more fun! I’d like to thank Disney/Hyperion and NetGalley for the ARC!

crashed my device severely so I was unable to read past the first seven pages. Super disappointed with this! But I got a Physical copy afterwards and this book was amazing!! Great for Disney fans! Definitely reccomend

What Was Once Mine reimagines the Tangled version of Rapunzel with her mother drinking from the wrong flower. In this version the ailing pregnant queen drinks from the Moondrop flower rather than the Sundrop flower, giving Rapunzel silver hair and the ability to hurt rather than heal. For everyone's safety she is locked in a tower and watched over by the evil Mother Gothel. Rapunzel longs for freedom and to see the mysterious floating lights that appear on her birthday, but she is afraid of hurting people. When the handsome outlaw Flynn Rider and his buddy Gina help her escape, the trio ends up investigating the secret of Rapunzel's hair, while Gothel and other nefarious people try to find them. Although not vastly different from the original version of the story, this is an entertaining read, complete with a sympathetic princess and rogue friends, as well as devious villains, and a happily ever after.

After reading some of her other twisted tale books, I was really excited for this one. I just felt that it was slow and not as exciting as some of her other novels.

It wasn't terrible, but I felt like there was such a different tone in the same book that it was hard to read! I'll read another twisted tale because I do find them very clever, I just think this one wasn't for me.
