I really liked this book of poems. Apparently the poet is in a band as well, so I am definitely looking them up. I will also be purchasing a print copy of this book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a free advanced copy of this book to read and review.
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read and review this book. Vulnerable AF is a poetry collection about infatuation, love and heartbreak. This was an amazing debut poetry collection. I will definitely read other books Tarriona Ball publishes.
"The real-life story of a relationship in the author's past told in verse and short prose pieces. Relatable and honest, with Tank's signature mix of whimsy and realness, Vulnerable AF is about the difference between love and infatuation, the danger and confusion of losing yourself in the idea of someone else, and coming out on the other side of heartbreak with your sense of self-worth—and your sense of humor—stronger for it."
This one was a DNF for me. I will not be posting a review of it but thank you for sending. it just wasn't for me. Thank you again for the copy
Though I missed my chance to download this title before its archive date, I was able to get a hand on a physical copy later.
It is a wonderful collection of Ball's work! Throughout the pages as you read the poems you really get a feel for the author's voice and emotions. She is both parts vulnerable and incredibly strong and her poetry resonates with the reader long after they put the book down.
In the past I haven't always bee a fan of poetry, but as the years have gone by I find myself searching it out more and more. I would highly recommend a copy of this collection to anyone looking to deepen their knowledge and experience of poetry.
This piece of art is very uplifting!! Powerful!!! Couldn't put it down. A must read for anyone who loves poetry.
5 Stars ( I received an e-arc of this collection but ended up listening the audiobook since the arc expired on pocketbook)
I enjoyed listening to this collection, you really get to hear her emotions. Even if I read the physical version it has emotional, some sass and love.
Firstly, I'd like to thank Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the eARC for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this collection from Tarriona Ball. This was my first time reading her work and I really liked Ball's writing style. This collection is focused on the emotions that come with relationships and heartbreak. Also it explores the difference between love and infatuation. I really loved Ball's honesty and there is a real earthy feel to her poetry. She explores the topics with such a real take on it.
My favourite part of the collection was the 'Tank's Story Time' pieces that were mostly prose and gave the reader real life insight into what the poetry was based on. I also appreciate the pieces that focused on Ball's culture and her experience as being a black woman. The art by Shonté Young-Williams was brilliant and creative just like Ball's writing and really complimented the words well.
I really recommend this collection to poetry readers, especially if you're looking for a collection that isn't just a carbon copy of all the others. A really great confident collection!
I really enjoyed this. It was accessible and definitely vulnerable as the title suggests. It will definitely stick with me and I can't see myself picking it up again in the future. I would recommend it to a friend!
Vulnerable AF is a poetry collection on love, heartbreak and self-worth. Tarriona “Tank” Ball talks about her experience with love and heartbreak.
Vulnerable AF is written in a very beautiful way, I enjoyed reading it, I even listened to the audiobook while reading it and I have to say hearing the author narrate made the reading experience very enjoyable (I recommend the audiobook!). I loved the honesty. The poems are relatable and even when I couldn’t relate to some of them I was still able to enjoy them.
I always find poetry difficult to rate because I can’t really say much about it except how it made me feel and if I enjoyed the writing style.
Thank you Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
my rating: 3.5 stars. ✨
A book full of short little reliable poems. It is always a brave thing when authors expose their vulnerable side, and this was no different. Some poems resonated with me more than others, but it's definitely worth a read.
Andrews McMeel never published a poet that I did not absolutely love, and Ball is no different. But she is different.
Her book is full of poems all written about the same ended romance with an ex-partner Adam. Somehow a simultaneously poignant and light read, the slam poet reveals herself to us by becoming the title and being vulnerable af.
A quick read, but one that could be easily meaningful through multiple reads at different periods in our lives, it is definitely worth checking out if you like raw and honest poetry.
*In exchange for an honest review, I received an advanced reader's e-copy of the book courtesy of Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley.com.
"You have helped create a symphony of similes
With what we made... I have created"
I wish I would have liked this book more, but it was just not up my alley. Most of the poems didn't hitas hard as I wanted.
Telling the truth about the ups and downs of a relationship is an exercise in vulnerability. In Vulnerable AF, Tarriona Ball uses poetry to share her innermost thoughts on a lost love.
Not only was she vulnerable in the relationship that inspired this volume, as a writer Tarriona is vulnerable before her readers in sharing these poems of heartache and heartbreak. Lines such as “I always wondered if she knew that lessons weren’t learned backwards…” demonstrate Tarriona’s gift for reflective wordplay. Readers who have—and perhaps even haven’t—lost love are bound to be touched by Vulnerable AF. It’s a tender, beautiful showcase of her poetic work.
A short read, with some illustrations to cleanse the palate. Tank demonstrates why she's vulnerable AF and shows good effort in doing so.
Many thanks to the publisher and author for the ARC.
this debut poetry collection is relatable, candid, and beautifully vulnerable. comprised of reflections on a past relationship, there's a feeling of painful catharsis. tarriona describes it as "a collection of poems so that I can remember... and forget."
my favorite thing about vulnerable af is that tarriona's personality shines brightly throughout. she establishes herself as someone who loves love, who yearns for romance and connection, and who ultimately knows her worth.
the traditional poems are interspersed with "Tank's Story Time" sections that share context about her life and loves. i really enjoyed the realness of these sections.
but the thing i struggle with is that i want more from this collection. tarriona establishes that she can make herself vulnerable, but i think she could have gone deeper. many of the poems are super short, and i was left wanting more.
i enjoyed this collection, though, and i'm glad it made me aware of tarriona's music. her group, tank and the bangas, is badass!! i recommend this one, especially if you like heartbreaky themes or you're in need of some healing.
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing me with a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
This book was sent to me as an ARC on NetGalley. However, all opinions are of my own.
I love poetry and this book was no exception. I loved how short the poems were, but all pact a punch.
Some of them were more relatable than others but they all told a story. The poems were able to relay love, loss and heartache and I definitely had a few favourites!
Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Vulnerable AF is a great collection of vulnerable and honest poetry. This was my first introduction to Tarriona and this short book of poems has made me a fan. The cover is what grabbed my attention and immediately made me intrigued. There were many pieces I loved and some that I couldn't relate to but that is literature. Not everything is a perfect fit but I appreciated reading a story told with honest emotion. I felt like I could place myself in her shoes and experience the same emotions she had. I'm not experiencing heartbreak but if anyone out there is or is holding love for someone who doesn't love them back, this is a great pick-up as I feel you will be able to resonate with many of her poems.
'Sun and Moon Folk' is one of my favorites.
"--I didn't call you Sun with the intent for such a responsibility
I called you Sun because when I saw you. . .
I shined "
Also, as a Libra, I loved 'Libra Thinking' as well.
"I tried to give you 100 percent honesty
You, in return, gave me sixty-two
Thank you, though
You let me see exactly what I didn't want from anyone--
An imbalance of truth, no matter what form it's in"
Beautifully storyteller. I will need to listen to the audio next since I have only heard positive things. I hope to see her perform in person one day. Great work.
Vulnerable AF by Tarriona Ball is one incredible collection of poetry that will leave you in awe.
The first introduction sentence along sets the mood and really makes you feel for what's coming. Then we get to each individual piece of poetry that just "Wows". It is "Vulnerable AF". It's a step into Tarriona's minds and feelings. I loved the honestly and integrity that this collection gives off. It felt real, which I really like. I love being able to feel with someone else through a piece of writing.
There's going to be the odd poem you don't relate to - that's the human experience. Even when I couldn't relate, I found myself still enjoying the poems. They are well written and really hit home.
Overall, highly recommend this collection of poetry!
Four out of five stars.
