When I read the description of The Marriage on NetGalley, the line "Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him." made me think that this novel would be like nothing I'd ever read before...and I was right! The Marriage was my first K.L. Slater novel, and it definitely won't be my last...the characters were all very well-written and easy to empathize with, and I had a hard time putting the book down. There were plenty of twists and turns, and I was surprised by the ending. I highly recommend The Marriage...thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this amazing thriller. : )
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
Review of this novel will be posted soon.
The Marriage by KL Slater was absolutely brilliant. I couldn't put it down and read it in under 2 days (despite being busy!) From the very first page I was taken into the journey and couldn't wait to see what came next.
The blurb first drew me in:
"Ten years ago he killed my son.
Today I married him.
My friends and family can't understand it. My neighbours whisper in the street whenever I walk past. How can I love a man like Tom?
They don't know me at all."
and I never looked back!
You always know you're going to get a great read with KL Slater's books but this surpassed my expectations. I was completely involved in the characters and was able to feel empathy with their sides/positions despite the circumstances due to the way the story is told through many different points of view/characters.
Just when I thought someone was "responsible" the story took me another way. So many brilliant twists and turns. The story has secrets, lies and control running throughout and it makes for a very compelling read.
A brilliant story and I would definitely recommend.
KL Slater is one of my favourite authors.
The Marriage a psychological Thriller that keeps you wondering and turning the pages.
Great read again form KL Slater
What a fantastic story!! I could not put this book down, and I had to keep reading because from the start, all the characters and storyline intriguing me.
In the beginning, I'm confused with the feeling and intention of Bridget to marry the killer of her son. She seems to love Tom and forgive him, but I don't think it's that easy. I feel something will happen that related to Bridget or Tom.
As the story unfolds, it's definitely beyond the marriage. The marriage is only the reason something big happened. All characters hiding something, and I keep guessing the bad person in this story, but obviously, I failed in doing that.
The author's writing is excellent, and the storyline is fast-paced. I also love all the POVs in this book, especially Ellis's POV., the nine-year-boy. Furthermore, the plot twist is super unique and shocking and made me gasping in disbelief!
I like the ending and grateful for the marriage. I love when the marriage is staying like it is.
This book is my first book by the author, and it won't be my last. If you're looking for a psychological thriller with a fast-paced story, this book is for you. I highly recommend it. I finished reading in two days despite my busy schedule.
This was suspenseful, twisty and engaging. It was difficult to stop reading once started. Anyone who enjoys a good thriller will like this book.
He killed her son. She is definitely old enough to be his mother. She is about to marry him. Yeah, an irresistibly shocking premise. Tom was Bridget's son Jesse's best friend. While the boys were growing up, Bridget was like a second mother to Tom. Why did Tom kill Jesse? And what could possibly lead to Bridget and Tom marrying?
During the years that Tom served his prison sentence certain things were in play. For one thing he began writing letters to Bridget begging her forgiveness - letters she never read. What is more is that the prison offered a restorative justice program that both Tom and Bridget joined. The program gave Tom and Bridget a chance to talk frequently. The pair fell in love and married when the opportunity presented itself.
Not only was this shocking - and unbelievable - as far as the two people that mattered most - Tom and
T he Marriage, written by K.L. Slater is a psychological thriller novel. Tom and Jesse have been friends since childhood, as have their mothers, Bridget and Jill. Their friendships ended in 2009, the second Tom punched Jesse in a nightclub brawl Sentanced for manslaughter and got set to prison for 10 years he enters into a prison restoration program and contacts Bridget to show her how much he regrets his actions. They marry in secret whilst he is in prison. In 2019 Tom is released. He tells Jill that he has married Bridget. She is concerned Bridget wants revenge for only son’s death and is appalled at the 20 year age gap between them. He is now the step-grandfather to Jesse’s young son, Ellie, who is confused as to why his father’s killer would marry his grandmother. Coral, Ellie’s mother and Ellie cannot stand Tom.
A well paced novel which has many unexpected twists and turns. The Marriage tells readers about what happened during that fateful night, 10 years ago and the subsequent effect it has on both families. The novel concentrated mostly on Jill and Bridget, writing in the first person, who are the main characters in the plot. Chapters relating to Tom and the police officers are in the third. Is Bridget looking for revenge, forgiveness or does she really love him?
I received this book via Netgalley and Bookouture in exchange for a honest review. #netgalley #gifted
This book started out leaving a bad taste in my mouth. It felt weird. I suppose that was the point. Who would ever marry their child's murderer? I could easily follow that path, but even with all the foundation laid, I could not sympathize with a single character in the book. And while I don't need to like a character to enjoy a book, it usually helps. In this case, I feel like we were supposed to be focusing on the marriage itself, but then the book went off to deal with so many other twists and events that the marriage itself took a minor roll. Even though I am usually saying that a story had too many twists, I feel like this one needed one more to center all the stories and bring the book together. At the end, it was a good story, just not quite the one I was expecting or hoping for.
What a twisted story! This book was a fast, easy-to-read thriller with lots of drama and like someone else said... KARMA! However, I will never understand why would anyone married the guy who killed your son... I'm sure there are other more effective ways for revenge! hahaha
This was my first K.L Slater book and now I'm intrigued about her other books. Really recommend it!
A good Book to read, it has a very interesting story. Personally I had never read like this one. I like it because the characters and the love story inside was extrage and when I read the end and start to appears the "bad people" I felt surprised because none of the persons that I thought was the bad was the bad.
The bad thing about the book is that I felt it a little slowbut you will get surprised surelly.
First of all, thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
The story really hooked me. I already got the shock from the prologue. The prologue makes me like, “What’s actually happening right now?”. Throughout the story, I can feel the uneasiness from the story. The writing is good and easy to understand. The chapters are coming from many characters POV, adding the feel of uneasiness. It feels like none of the characters are likeable or can be trusted at all. For me, this story is thrilling, and manages to make me feel always at edge during the reading. The premise is unusual but the story is to my liking.
A great read. It got me a touch confused at times. I frequently thought I’d guessed what was going on only to realise I was wrong and it was something else.
Plenty of twists and turns here..
Odd premise for a book but very engrossing. I couldn't put it down once I started! I didn't like the premise though, something about it was a step too cringey for me, too unrealistic.
K.L. Slater has become one of my favorite authors. I haven't read a book that I haven't loved.
This book blew my mind. A Suspenseful and shocking book from page one. You must read this book!
Ten years ago Tom killed my son in a bar fight, today I am marring him.
When Tom is released for killing his best friend, everyone is shocked because he announces that he has married his best friend’s mother, Bridget.
This leads you on an exciting adventure full of secrets and betrays. What are these messed up, unlikable characters up to? Who can you really trust? This all leads you to the big reveal that I didn’t see coming until the end. Can you say Karma!?!
Tom and Jesse were best friends since childhood, so were their mothers Jill and Bridget. But their friendship and relations were spoiled the moment Tom killed Jesse and he was sent to Prison.
But as ironic as it sounds, 10 years after the incident Bridget marries Tom, a man who killed her son and is still in prison. Jill is furious with Bridget as she thinks she is planning something against Tom to avenge her son's death. And there is Ellie, a 9-year-old son of Jesse who is confused as to why his grandmother married his father's murderer.
How can a mother marry a person who killed her son? Did she really forgive Tom or is she planning something? How will they convince their respective families?
With so many complicated relationships and a few twists and turns, the story was very engaging and keeps you guessing all the way. The narration was really good with multiple POV's and the pace of the story was decent. Overall it was a great read.

Ten years ago he killed my son. Today I married him.
Ten years ago her son Jesse was murdered and their perfect family was destroyed. Her strong, handsome boy, so full of life, became a memory, a photo she carried with her everywhere.
But today is a new day and she married a man in prison…but the man who killed her son! Why would she even do that?
Her friends and family can’t understand it. Her neighbors talk behind her back. How can she love a man like Tom?
They don’t really know her at all…
This gripping psychological thriller held my attention from beginning to end, with intricate plot, relatable characters and plenty of twists and turns to the satisfying ending.
