Doug the pug is fiercely loyal to Julie, his human. That's why he hates Luke, Julie's "boyfriend," aka her married boss, who always leaves her in tears. Doug is determined to split them up, but that's tough to do when you weigh 15 lbs (okay, maybe 20 lbs) and don't speak human. But Doug will find a way.
This novel is adorable. It took me a minute to realize it was told from the dog's POV—as it turned out, that device worked really well. The book is consistently funny throughout, but also full of heart. It's really more women's fiction than romance, because the focus is more on Julie disentangling herself from Luke and finding the courage to love again, than it is on the budding relationship with Tom. Julie and Tom were really cute together—I hope there's a sequel. I'd love to see more of them, maybe with a baby, and Doug adjusting to the new little human in the house.
Thanks, NetGalley, for the ARC I received. This is my honest and voluntary review.
A really easy read, enjoyable and fun. Very quirky as the whole story is from the perspective of a Pug but makes a romance novel that bit different.
So cute! a really warm and fun read, really made me smile and I'd like to think all dogs have an internal monologue like Doug!
Very funny, perfect for summer, a real feel-good read
Thank you to HQ and Netgalley for the advance copy.
OMG, this book was a joy to read. Any preconceptions I had about a dog narrating the story were blown away after the first page.
Doug is beautiful pug, a rescue dog who absolutely adores his mistress, Julie. The only thing is, Doug does not like her boyfriend and the feeling is mutual. Doug decides his mission in life is to find a new love for his mistress, whilst at the same time getting rid of the current one. What ensues is a brilliant, laugh out loud tail (pun intended), but this story will also pull at your heartstrings.
Doug is the hero, but the humans are pretty amazing too.
Matt Dunn, Doug is my all-time favourite ever character! Move over Lassie because Doug will be chasing your tail!
A wonderful 5 stars from me. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
I was so looking forward to reading this book. It took awhile for me to be approved for the ARC, but I was so excited when I finally received it. Not only do I love dogs, but I adore pugs, and just could not wait to read this!
My favorite part of the story is Doug. He is so beyond cute. I just wanted to give him belly rubs! His personality is so cute.
I also loved how the author made Doug the narrator. Dunn had to be creative in how he wrote in order to have Doug always be "on the scene." He did a great job with that.
Now, for my issues. I didn't particularly care for any of the characters except Doug. Luke was awful, which wouldn't have irritated me except Julie (protagonist) was also terrible. Tom had some cute qualities, but I wasn't awestruck by him. I did like Julie's dad, and Dot was cute too, but there just wasn't one (human) character that I adored.
And, I felt the story was kind of bland. I adore cute romances, but this one just wasn't cutting it for me. It seemed so cliché. I know romances typically are cliché, but there was absolutely nothing that made this book "wow" for me. If it weren't for Doug and his adorableness, I may have not finished this novel.
I hate that my review sounds mean. I am so sorry! But I just wasn't impressed.
A romantic book with a difference, written from the point of view of Doug (Julie's pug ) . Girl meets (the wrong) boy, meets some one else , but love does not run smoothly. Funny and true to life , all in all a great read.
Thanks to net galley for the arc in exchange for an honest review
As a dog lover I was excited to receive this ARC from Netgalley.
The story is told through the eyes of Doug, the pug. Doug's owner Julie makes bad choices and Doug schemes to put her on the right track for love. Within his limited canine repertoire, Doug manipulates situations hilariously. This book gave me several laugh out loud moments and I loved Doug.
It's a light, easy, fun read. I found Doug's owner, Julie, irritating however. Whilst trying to find her the perfect man was the theme of the book, she didn't come across as much of a catch!
This was fun!
Narrated by Doug the pug, which makes the story extra funny at times as a dog doesn't always understand human concepts. You've just got to love how Doug tries to break up Julie and Luke and tries to find a new and much more suitable boyfriend/partner for Julie.
I loved Doug, I thought Julie was unlikeable with her bad choices and lack of self-worth. Tom was great and Luke was dire. Overall it was a fairly entertaining read but rather repetitive and not something I would want to read again or recommend to a friend. A bit of a disappointment as I have enjoyed other books by Matt Dunn. With thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review
Doug the pug is a very intelligent, articulates little dog. He cares about Julie to whom he belongs, so much so that he'll even brave a vet's visit if it helps him play matchmaker.
He understands that married lothario, Luke is bad news.
This is the story of how he sets about getting rid of the wrong one.
Being g a dog, he can't understand why Julie doesn't aim for what she wants, as he does himself. Some of his takea on life are hilarious. As an exame: he thinks missing cat posters are pointless because cat's can't read!
It's nice spending time in Dougs's company The book is funny and nicely puts over a dogs point of view.
Pug Actually by Matt Dunn a five-star read that only got five stars for Doug. I had such high hopes for this story, as I have loved Matt Dunn’s writing in the past, and I did enjoy this in the end, but honestly at times I wanted to throw my kindle out of the window. Doug won my heart at every turn, it was the rest of them that done me in, his rescuer Julie well at some points the only redeemable feature was the fact that she rescued Doug, she may get there in the end, but honestly was it worth Doug’s effort. This is an overall good story, and the way it is told is very nicely done, its not something you see often so that was a nice change. I know we can’t always like all of the characters, and sometimes that’s the point of the story, and I get that and even enjoy it sometimes, but some of the characters in this one even their own mothers would struggle to love.
I've recently read Pug Actually by Matt Dunn and absolutely loved it. It was funny, entertaining and the characters had me hooked. I liked how the story was told through the eyes of the dog, I just couldn't put my device down once I started reading it. There was nothing I didn't like and I'll definitely be reading other Matt Dunn titles in the future.
Just loved Doug the pug, at times forgot he was a dog and thought of him as a house mate. A lovely romance with Doug at the helm. Really enjoyed this book
This is a light-hearted romance, written from the viewpoint of Doug, the pug. Julie (his owner) is having an affair with Luke, believing him when he says he is going to leave his wife. However, Doug knows differently and is on a mission to make Julie realise Ryan’s deceit and find someone new. When Tom, the vet, appears on the scene, Doug tries to steer Julie in the right direction.
A humorous tale which is packed with fun and laughter. Although Doug is a rescue dog, he is a real hero looking out for Julie, and his escapades are a laugh a minute. A cute, loveable dog, with a heart of gold. Great characterisations of Doug, but Julie seems weak and ineffectual, and I thought that the pace lacked a little because of this.
Not to be taken seriously, a light-hearted, humorous tale.
✍️ One Sentence Synopsis: If you’re in a relationship that even your dog knows is completely toxic, it’s just probably not a good idea.
💭 Overall Thoughts:
So this was a cute take on a romance told from a dog’s perspective. Doug the Pug is an adorable narrator and he knows what’s up. He can sniff out a toxic relationship but he also can understand the mindset of not knowing what a “good” relationship is until you’re in one— comparing it to his experience being a rescue pup.
Overall, it was light hearted and adorable. Doug was an awesome character and added to the fun. The premise and wittiness was what I really enjoyed about the book.
That being said, I had some issues with some of the characters here and the pacing was a bit slow. I also didn’t t get an overwhelming sense of chemistry with either love interest here— but that may have been because of the perspective the story was told from.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for Goodreads.
What I Liked:
👍 The narrator perspective— and the adorable narrator himself.
👍 Loved the supporting role characters and wish they were fleshed out a bit more.
What I Didn’t Like:
👎 The main character, Julie, is thick headed and whiny. A little childish.
👎 There was some romanticism of toxic relationships.
⚠️ Content Warnings: toxic relationships, infidelity, grief
Thank you to Net Galley and HQ for allowing me to read with request for for honest review.
What a fun read! My best a friend has a pug and I could just visualise all Doug’s expressions, moves and strategies..He is quite the philosopher at times too. I loved the dialogue, characters and friendships from Pria and Sanj and despised (naturally) Luke-ass! Just when I thought Julie and Tom were heading for an easy happy conclusion there was another little twist, but Doug pulls it out of the bag! Well, maybe Tom had a part too..🙂
What didn’t I like? Sarah’s acceptance of Luke’s behaviour, even under the guise of her getting what she wants..
Life advice from a pug? Of course Doug isn’t just a dog - he’s our inner voice at times and our observational, knowing friend . He just has 4 legs.
Do give this book a read!
Pug Actually is an amusing read, told from Doug the pug’s point of view.
His owner Julie is having an affair with Luke a married man who is a complete d**k and has constantly lied to her. Doug hates him and is determined to see him off.
When Tom the vet enters the scene Doug is sure he will be ‘the one’ so does all he can to bring them together.
A lovely well written light read, though Julie was at times exasperating the other characters are well rounded and interesting. I found the ending a little rushed, perhaps an epilogue to see a little into Julie and Tom’s future would be good, but that’s me, always wanting more!
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
Such a lovely lovely story. As a pet lover myself I was drawn to the cover and premise of this novel. Pug Actually is written from the point of view of the adorable pug, Doug,
Doug wants his owner, Julie, to get together with the lovely vet Tom, and away from the married and dislikeable Luke. I dare you not to enjoy this tail (sorry tale) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A really enjoyable book told from the dog's point of view. This had a great plot and was really well. I like the characters and really enjoyed seeing them develop. I would recommend this book.
I love Matt Dunn's books so I was delighted to receive this one.
A really original twist on the romance novel - told through the eyes of a pug about his owner's love life. I must admit I hadn't read the blurb before starting (I requested, forgot about it, and just jumped straight in) so the first couple of pages I was slightly bemused as I thought it was through the eyes of a housemate...
A really light read - there is nothing challenging here and, like most romance novels, it's pretty predictable, but there are some hilarious moments, great characters and it's well written.
Recommended as a nice holiday read. And now I can't help but wonder what my lab is thinking constantly...
