This book started out interesting, but it didn’t stay there. This is a family story about meeting their expectations versus your expectations for yourself. Learning about the family was interesting, but when it gets down to the main part of the book where they must get their PE credit in order to graduate on time because the teacher didn’t turn in a report. This is where I stopped caring about this book. Maybe it was the narration style, maybe it was the book, but I had no desire to find out what happened at the end. I did make it 22% of the way through.
Ashley Elston has quickly become one of my favorite YA authors and someone whose books I recommend all the time. This one did not disappoint!
Dazed and Confused meets The Parent Trap in 10 Truths and a Dare by Ashley Elston.

In this follow up to 10 Blind Dates, Olivia is all set to graduate as salutatorian and spend Senior Week attending many parties…until she finds out she’s one PE golf credit short of graduating at all. Olivia works out a deal with her golf coach to spend the week helping at a tournament instead of attending all the parties. Since her mom monitors her every move via the app on her phone, The Fab Four (Olivia’s cousins Charlie, Sophia and her boyfriend, Wes) take turns holding Olivia’s phone so she can get this credit without her mom finding out. Can they pull this off without a hitch?

According to Goodreads I am definitely in the minority in not loving the second book in this series. I found the plot too outlandish and unnecessarily complicated. Mostly it made me sad that Olivia couldn’t talk to her mom honestly about the predicament she was in. I also wasn’t super invested in the romance and missed the interactions with the family that there were way more of in book 1. If you loved the first one, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this one—it just didn’t work for me personally.
2.5 stars
I absolutely loved this contemporary novel! The narrator did a fantastic job giving each character a unique voice that suited their personality. Having read Ashley Elston’s other novel 10 Blind Dates I really enjoyed getting to revisit many of the same characters and the chaotic family dynamics.
Thanks NetGalley for the preview!
Gosh this book 100% fell flat for me. Olivia was annoying and whiny. She resorted to lying and sneaking around instead of asking for help. I don't know how many times I heard her say she would just die of embarrassment if her family found out about this. Overall I felt like her actions did not line up with someone who was #2 in her class. Being late, blowing things off, forgetting she skipped class etc just seemed so unlike a student of that caliber. I also wish one of her cousins would have spoken up and said this is silly just tell your parents. I really struggled with finishing this audiobook. No fault to the narrator but Olivia was not my favorite.
I really enjoyed visiting this lovely, loud family again!! I didn't like it as much as I enjoyed the first one. I think I liked all the zany things that family members did and this one just didn't have that. However, there was plenty of zany with Olivia's cousins and friends.
The name through me. I was not expecting the story that was presented. Olivia, a high school senior, is just days from graduating as salutatorian. Except that a last minute email from the vice principal puts not only salutuatorian, but graduation, in jeopardy. Half a credit of PE. After working hard to excell in AP classes, a PE course that she blew off a few to many times threatens to ruin everything.
With the help of her cousins, and the good will of her PE teacher, she maybe able to make up the class, but at what cost?
It took me a couple chapters to like Olivia, but I became invested and really enjoyed the book.
The narrator did a good job of emoting and keeping a nice rhythm and tempo.
Sweet book. I didn’t know it was a series and jumped right in without feeling like I missed anything. I know many. Olivias! So many over stressed high school seniors out there. I do feel like the plot was a bit slow and wish I’d picked this up as a text instead of the audio book. The narration was excellent but I did want to speed things up. I do think this book is for a younger audience. I can imagine my 13 year old self loving it. The focus on family and cousins as friends was delightful and the nerd being forced into the world of high school sports was entertaining.
I enjoyed many aspects of this book, but some parts didn't quite work for me. Elston is good at creating settings and fun situations for her characters. Olivia goes to several grad parties that were unique and fun to read. Also, Elston wrote a great love interest with Leo, a good guy that the reader will root for. Also, the different narrative voices of Olivia and her friends were distinct and entertaining. My issues with this book revolve around Olivia. I didn't enjoy her narrative voice, and I found her thought process, at times, annoying. Plus, I had a hard time believing the reasons behind her academic issues. Olivia is a type-A perfectionist, and her mother is an extreme helicopter parent, how did these two people let something like not passing a required pass slip by them? 10 Truths and a Dare is a fun, fast, read, but it is not without issues.
What would you do if your best laid plans seemed to be vanishing before your very eyes? This is the question that Olivia is forced to answer when she gets the call from her assistant principal that tells her not only will she not be the saluatorian but won't graduate if she can't get a form completed from her off campus PE class. Lots of adventures ensue as Olivia, her cousins, Sophia and Charlie, and close family friend, Wes come to aid to ensure she graduates. Coach Cantu is all that stands between Olivia and her future but will she be able to meet his demands? Can Leo be all that he appears to be? Will the family learn the truth of Olvia's situation? The narrator really made this book fly and added something extra to an amazing story.
A good choice if you are looking for something funny with only mild peril. The premise is a bit hard to believe, but the author helps sell it by making the character extra independent and her family super involved.
It's graduation time... so this novel seemed a perfect escape. The cover drew me in - I knew it would be some juicy high school drama. I needed a fun, light-hearted listen. The main premise: It's a few weeks or so until graduation and well, Olivia didn't get her last of PE credit paperwork turned in... what she thinks is a simple paperwork error, turns out to be a time spent in class issue. She didn't put in enough time for credit. Luckily, her coach as a golf tournament she can volunteer at to make up her credits... she only has to give up her week of epic senior parties. I actually LOVE the themed senior party ideas and I am little sad nothing like them exist in my life: a PJ party, a rodeo themed party, tea party, pool party, a barn party - gah! They all sound so much fun. I like how we readers still get to attend the parties - just as different characters and not just Olivia. Olivia simply has the best friends. The Fab Four is my favorite group of friends now. Sophie, Wes and Charlie agree to help Olivia out and cover for her to her over-noisy mother while she gets her PE credit and doesn't ruin her salutatorian status. She finds more than credit on the course though - of course, there's "L".
Yes, I read this one as an audiobook and I LOVED the narrator. The southern twang made the novel even more special. This narrator may be my new favorite.
This novel has multiple view points and I adored the different perspectives and the different takes on the drama/family/romance aspects.
I didn't know this was kinda sorta a sequel . You can read it without the first one - as I was clueless and thoroughly enjoyed it!
This one was pretty lackluster for me. I didn’t feel connected to the storyline. I enjoyed the main character but felt as though the storyline was lacking.
This is the first book I’ve read from this author and was given a chance to have an early listen to the audiobook thanks to NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The first half was boring and only in the last few chapters did it semi pick up pace.
There just could have been more to this.
For young adult it was also very “young” despite the plot being high school graduation time.
Olivia is about to graduate high school as salutatorian until she gets an email saying she is short her PE class. Through an arrangement with the teacher, she needs to spend her entire week before graduation working a golf tournament instead of being at a series of parties. Enlisting the help of her cousins to cover for her, Olivia works harder than ever. She also learns about integrity.
Opinion
I listened to the audiobook and absolutely loved it. The narrators were perfect for the parts. They captured the attitudes of youth perfectly.
The story was consuming. Told in different viewpoints, the reader knows what is going on in Olivia and her cousins days as they trudge through the week. This story captures perfectly the all consuming mistakes of childhood and the love of a family.
Many thanks to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC of this audiobook.
10 Truths and a Dare was written so well! I was hooked by the first sentence and did not want to stop listening. I felt totally immersed throughout the entire story and even felt like I was apart of the Messina family. There was graduation, family, deviousness, romance, friendship, drama, and so much more. I never wanted this story to end!
Thank you so much to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I was in love with Ashley Elston’s Ten Blind Dates, and was so excited for this companion novel! The big, messy, loving family in these books is so much fun and I loved the way we got to catch up with the characters Sophie and Wes from the first book. The premise of this one was so funny—Olivia needing to get her messed up gym credit taken care of without her mom knowing, when her mom tracks her every move on Olivia’s phone, etc. So chaotic and comical and the kind of thing that a high schooler would totally do. I loved it! Olivia is a great character in her own right and only made better by the ensemble cast of her cousins and friends. I would definitely be excited to read more books about this family/in this world. Also, the audiobook narrator was excellent! She had the perfect southern accent without overshadowing or distracting from the story. Big fan!
I have enjoyed Elston’s work since the beginning and always look forward to getting my hands on her latest title. As the sequel to 10 Blind Dates, I was looking forward to hilarious read filled with family, romance, and life lessons. I was not one bit disappointed.
Elston’s characters were spot on. The family is large, hectic, and always in each other’s business. It was fun to get another peek inside this family and get some different perspectives from the cousins. Although most of the story is told through Olivia’s point of view, I liked that we got a couple throwbacks to Sophie. I also found that the boy’s perspectives were particularly hilarious and hope to get one of their story’s in the near future.
Golf may not be my thing in real life, but Following along with Olivia, who knew nothing about the sport, it wasn’t so bad. It was an interesting choice on the author’s part, but I think that it worked out really well.
As for the storyline itself, it was pretty solid, even though it was quite formulaic. It was no surprise who the love connection would be with and that, somewhere along the line, there was going to be a confession. Regardless of knowing how everything would turn out, I still loved every minute of it. I think that my only drawback was that, as a family focused book, there was no resolution with the Joes after some discussions were brought up earlier in the novel. Good or bad, I would have liked to see something more between these cousins.
As a listened to this title, I found that the narration was easy to listen to and paced quite well. The Narrator did a great job distinguishing between voices and portraying tone.
I look forward to Elston’s future novels still and can’t wait to share this with my patrons in the library.
Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive. . . In this companion book to '10 Blind Dates,' the Messina family is back with cousin Olivia as the focus. It is graduation time for Olivia, Sophie, Marcus, Wes, and the 'Evil Jo's.' Olivia has a full week of grad parties to attend until she gets a note from the Assistant Principal telling her she is half a credit short due to an unfinished PE class. Thus begins a mad scramble for Olivia to do what the coach needs her to do to make up that credit. Even though Olivia herself can't attend all the parties, her phone has to so that Oliva's parents do not find out about the graduation snafu before all is fixed. Having Marcus, Sophie, and Wes help watch her phone and text with her mom sets the group up for some humorous exchanges. How long can they keep up the masquerade? At what point do they realize that coming clean will be easier in the end? Like '10 Blind Dates' this book includes a clean, slow-burning romance with a sweet ending. Would be a great read while relaxing in a hammock after the rush of the school year.
Thank you to Disney Audiobooks and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book brought me back to high school! I loved the drama with the family and how the main character tried to solve problems on her own that were much bigger than her. I was frustrated that she wasn't just asking for help from someone that could really help her, but I understood why. it was a light pick me up book, realistic but not too much like real life.
Right before Senior Week Olivia finds out that he did not meet the requirements of her half-credit gym class in order to graduate high school. In a last-ditch effort to be able to graduate on time with her friends and family, she takes on helping out at a local golf tournament. This book has Olivia as the main POV and snippets of POV sections from her friends and family who helped her pull off this adventure.
10 Truths and a Dare was super fun to read. With my college graduation coming up in the next few weeks feelings of nostalgia around my high school graduation have been popping up. Ashley Elston highlighted the stress of high school academics as well as the pressure that high school athletes are under with a fun twist. I think that adding in the extra POVs helped flesh out the side characters who would’ve fallen flat without this addition. Thank you Netgalley for giving me access to an ARC of the audiobook. I enjoyed the narrator that was selected for this novel.
