Got an advanced e-arc from Netgalley for an honest review.
I really liked this comic, some teenagers think they can use some elderly people to get free lifetime passes for a amusement park, but at the end learned something about lthemselves and life.

The plot was relatively simple, but I loved how it was carried out! Some characters were a little one-dimensional, but Phyllis easily made up for them, in my opinion She and Caleb were amazing, plus Jackie's development was really nice to see. Overall, very quick lighthearted read with great art that'll look great in color!

Firstly, I would like to mention that the arc I received was quite bad quality and black and white, but I am sure once it will have colour, it will be stunning.

Secondly, i think it needs to be said, that this book is a little falsely advertised. Based on the synopsis it is supposed to be dark and twisted, but it was far from that, in fact at the end I would even call it wholesome and heartfelt.

The characters are the point where it really went south tho, they are really irritating and flat, plus the interaction between them was kinda unnatural and badly written. The only character that was developed decently was Phyllis, I loved reading about her past and see how she shaped those around her.

Overall, it was a fun and short little book, but if you are looking for something dark (as the synopsis claims to be) then this is probably not the book you are looking for.

I have downloaded this file to Bluefire reader several times but the formatting has made it unreadable. No images have downloaded and the text is layered on top of other text. I am currently unable to review this title. I will attempt to download the file again in the future in hopes that this issue has been fixed.

Rating: 3.5

An amusement park that gives free lifetime passes to a whole party if a member of that party dies in the park? And a group of teenagers dedicated to make it happen? I don’t know why, but this concept grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go until I read it.
The artwork was cool, although my ARC e-copy was in black-and-white, I can imagine the full colour artwork would be stunning. Bright amusement park colours? Heart eyes.
My main issue was with the characters. Each character felt like they were there to tick a box. They only really had basic personalities that revolved around the type of character they were in the story to fill. The only character that felt real was Phyllis. She was interesting, had a backstory and was more than just the “old lady” character.
Overall this was a fun and quick read and I would recommend it to those looking for a fun, quick and unique graphic novel.

"Lifetime Passes" is an interesting book that takes the myth that if you are in a party and someone dies at a Disney park, you get lifetime passes for the trouble.

The art style is interesting and unique in my opinion, and I am trying not to judge it too harshly because it is just an uploaded copy, but the quality is highly diminished to where the details are not visible and it really makes the whole experience less enjoyable. Even the sample for the color version was hard to read, so I couldn't say if that would be any better.

I feel like the description is a little misleading, with very little in way of humor or the like. It didn't remind me of "Heathers" at all besides that Jackie is a bit jaded like Veronica and she has a terrible group of friends. It is an enjoyable book overall but feels a bit like an after school special.

As a huge Disney fan, the in jokes were a little enjoyable, though I don't think anyone who doesn't know something about the behind the scenes of the parks would get it. The "tunnels" or there being multiple people playing a character are a few of the things that people unprepared don't like to hear about because it "breaks the magic" (doesn't really bother me though). To a certain point it gets a little ham fisted and it feels more like someone wanted to write about Disney park experience but couldn't get the rights so they wrote this instead.

It does make for an interesting story overall though, and I did end up liking the lead, Jackie, more than I thought I was going to. It was interesting learning about her history as well as Mrs. Adler's, but the ending didn't quite feel earned. I feel like this could have been a better novel with more details than a comic, but the visuals were rather nice. A solid story, just slightly messy surroundings.

**Thanks to Netgalley and Abrams ComicArts - Surely for the ARC in exchange for the honest review**

First of all, I was disappointed in the very beginning when I saw that art in the arc was black and white and in such poor quality too, didn't expect it to be. I'm sure it'll look better colored when it's published, but still...

Second, the whole 'teenagers driving elders' thing seemed a little unbelievable to me? Like, who would allow it, ever?

Although the idea was interesting, it wasn't what the synopsis described, AT ALL. Sorry.

Character development was really nice but I don't think I'll remember I've read this in a week or so. This graphic novel had potential but was so 'flat' the whole time, nothing happened and it felt boring from time to time.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I really, really enjoyed this graphic novel!

The artwork is absolutely excellent even in black and white, I can imagine it will be outstanding in full color in the final format!

The setting and characters are interesting in that slice-of-life way. I didn’t love the original premise or how it was introduced, but once the story got going it was really smooth and extremely enjoyable. A couple of the characters were a bit one-dimensional but overall it was a good mix.

I also enjoyed that some important issues are brought up in the course of the story, and that’s done in a way that feels natural and organic to the flow and the progression of the storyline, and dealt with in a sensitive manner.

This is a very heartwarming story but not in a sappy way, there was a very good balance there and after a slight stumble at the very beginning the pace was perfect.

This was an entertaining read. Although the plot isn’t completely out there in creativity it was still entertaining enough. The characters were cute even if infuriating at times. The artwork is adorable and I’d love to see it in color. I’d absolutely recommend this graphic novel because it’s a fun quick read. It’s perfect for those times books take you into a book slump. This book would take you right out of it. It was lovely.

The Netgalley version is in black and white. The drawings are still pretty, they would be better in color.
I am not sure about the plot thought, Teenagers want an old lady die in an amusement park. Eventually, it turned into a good ending.

I wish this arc would have been in color to really see the piece as a whole, but even black and white was great! The illustrations were simple enough but conveyed a lot of emotion and helped to tell a really beautiful story about identity and family.

The story itself had an interesting premise, though I do think the summary misleads the reader a bit. This book focuses way less on the whole scheme of bringing the elderly to the park than it does on the topics of standing up for yourself, immigration, family, and love. Definitely not a bad thing, but still a little bit misleading.

I liked the characters well enough but none of them really stood out to me. I enjoyed the writing style and how it complemented the themes/lessons in the book as well as the artwork and the primary setting. There were fewer funny parts than I'd imagined but also a lot more substance than I'd imagined.

This was a very fast and entertaining story that isn't afraid to tug on the heartstrings and approach some darker realities. Overall an enjoyable read!

I cannot wait to see this book in real life. It was one of the most well paced graphic novels I have ever read. It manages to tackle difficult subject matter such as death, deportation, and acceptance without hitting you over the head with it. The characters were full of personality and seemed so very lifelike. The dialogue was perfect. Overall very heartwarming.

Oof. I had a few issues with this graphic novel, For starters, I am bummed that they decided to release the arc in black and white. The image quality was poor and it really look away from the art. Color does a lot for tone and setting, so I really didn't feel that "magic" vibe that I wanted from the theme park. Second, it's a shame this is being marketed as a dark comedy. If anything, I think it's a bittersweet teenage summer with a happy little life lesson towards the end. Nothing comedic about it. Yes, the premise made me chuckle when I first read the synopsis, but that's about it. Third, I don't believe for one second that an elderly home would allow teenagers to drive and supervise residents at an amusement park. Hello, lawsuits! The whole thing made the plot unbelievable from the very beginning. Also, how did these kids afford churros every day? And last but not least, the teenage friends of the MC were just awful. I think that was sort of the point, but it was overdone and made me want to set the story aside several times.

The premise of this book wasn’t like anything I’d ever read before. This book has a very diverse cast — a first generation citizen, a queer character, and lots of fun old people! I love the character growth and the moral of the story. The art in the review copy wasn’t the best quality, but I definitely want to see the finished copy in hand.

This graphic novel might be better described as heartfelt than darkly comedic, but I can certainly see why a comic about teens trying to get lifetime passes to their favorite amusement park through a loophole involving party members dying would be described that way. And while that premise may sound a bit off-putting, the graphic novel is an absolute delight. I'm soft for the young / old friendship trope anyway, and the ways in which these characters find true friendship and belonging while doing something that starts off quite selfishly is really very sweet. It definitely had me tearing up by the end.

The story does deal with deportation, grief, and death, though the overall message is very uplifting. I'll definitely be looking forward to reading more from this new imprint and these two talented creators!

Lifetime Passes features vivid artwork, full of detail and rich texture. It isn't long before the beauty of the page gives way to the darkness of the story, with narrative results that are likely to keep readers turning pages to see what happens next. An entertaining combination of visual style and intrigue.

I found that the synopsis gave me a wrong thought about the whole plot of this graphic novel. I expected some dark comedy, kind of creepy maybe, but what I had was actually pretty infused in dramatic situations (not very well explored, got to say). The main positive side about the GN was the diversity included in the characters, both ethnically and sexually. Overall, the plot was bland, not very exciting and, most of all, in disbelief. Also thought that the main character was going to be some kind of villain and get her redemption arc throughout the plot, but since the beginning she has the sense of right and wrong, and the actual 'villains' of the book were ridiculous. Yeah, I wouldn't recommend this.

I’m curious to see this when it’s all done to see it in full color, but the artwork is great even in black and white.

I wish there had been a little bit more to the story, but it was still very enjoyable. I think some of it was on me as I knew it was about teens bringing folks from a nursing home to an amusement park, but I didn’t think they’d be waiting for them to die. Oof.

Still, they [mostly] seemed to learn lessons, and I enjoyed the stories and backgrounds of the characters.

Interesting mix of illustration style that owes a bit to manga, juvenile teenage characters and dark moments. Sometimes it's tender, sometimes it's odd or perhaps overly cruel, but it's certainly memorable.
