I'm still working my way through this book because now it makes me sad. Her Majesty has lost thr love of her life and it's beyond bittersweet learning about the early years of their marriage. But I am grateful to get a peek inside of their love story.
It’s been a bit since I’ve read any biographies, but was glad I gave this one a go. It was nice reading about the early years of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s life, especially with his recent passing. I found it to be detailed, with examples of real love, and other intriguing details of their early romance. Would recommend to those looking for info on their beginning years!

The Queen and Prince Philip have always held an intense fascination for me and for the world at large and delving deeper into first their courtship, and then their marriage in its early stages was well worth the read.
A reprint of a book written in the 1980s, the book covers the couple's lives up to that point. Charmingly written, the book places emphasis on domestic matters.
Reading biographies always gives you an insight that you might not have known otherwise. However it is hard to believe that there can be anything we think we don't already know about Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. The Royal Family of the past always made politically advantageous marriages. This was truly a love match. It was nice to see the little touches in their relationship that we may not have known. I thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful book.
I recieved a copy of this book via Netgalley.
This book was super interesting! I had been reading up on the royal family a few months ago and I realised I didn't know much about the queen's life . After watching a documentary I came to this book and found it to be very informative.
This biography, written by Helen Cathcart, of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, is a very well researched and invaluable account of the famous Royal couple.9 History buffs and admirers of the Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip will appreciate how in-depth and detailed the chronicle of the Royal couple’s early years together! Perhaps there is too much detail so that it can become difficult to absorb it all. Some chapters tend to drag and while others are extremely interesting and flowing! I love books on history, but when they become more like a textbook, it can take away the appeal of the story! Nevertheless, I appreciated the opportunity to expand my knowledge of the Royal couple and what their lives were like all these years!
This book takes readers on a journey through the lives of both the Queen and Prince Philip. I love the history, scandal and mystery of the royal family, there’s a lot of detail on who’s related to who and it all leads to a long happy marriage and a fabulous partnership.
The Queen found her soulmate in Prince Philip. Growing up with a partner to lean on, who knew her likes and dislikes-they shared a closeness and bond that helped them both live in a very public life and appear so normal.
I particularly loved the relationships formed through the years by this much loved royal couple. There’s a warm fuzzy feeling when reading this book, it leaves you with an outpouring of emotion and love for the Queen and her Consort.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
As a lover of all these United Kingdom and all things Royal I really enjoyed this book. The majority of what I know about the Queen and Prince Philip are stories from them in later life after Diana joined the family. It was enjoyable to get a look at what their lives were like before they became the untouchable Queen and Prince Consort that they eventually became. I feel like I learned so much about them and truly enjoyed Helen Cathcart's writing. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves the royals as much as I do.
Its a very good book about the life of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. It is a interesting read to find out more about their life together especially following the death of Prince Philip. Recommend it especially if you are a history buff, a Royal buff or just want to know more about who Prince Philip was after his death.
Titling this book celebrating the long marriage of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, 'The Early Years', is misleading. I assumed the book would document their meeting, encounters that they had before marriage, how their union came to be and their time before Elizabeth became Queen. It did that, but that's only a small portion of the book. This book goes all of the way to Charles and Diana’s wedding. I wouldn't call those the early years anymore.
If this story focused on a deeper dive into those early years, like I expected, I think it would add a lot more value to the reader. There are hundreds of books, movies and tv shows about Queen Elizabeth, authors need to think about what they are adding to that history. Because this book doesn’t focus in, readers get to skim through a lot. I know that Helen Cathcart doesn’t have insight into all of the things that go on behind the closed doors of the palace, but I don’t think that we are getting a fresh perspective here.
I was also surprised by how biased towards the Queen and Prince Philip this book is. Someone could read this and be led to believe that the monarchy has never had a scandal, there were never any rumours about the pair or that they even disagreed about anything. This book makes Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip’s marriage seem like the storybook fairy tale of a princess in every single way. We know that Prince Philip fought to have his last name be handed down to the children, so this is something that would have caused tension, but it’s overlooked. Philip was known as a ladies man in the press, but that’s never touched upon. I don’t want Helen Cathcart to invent drama for the sake of it, but I want them to feel like real people.
A really enjoyable read that was full of information about the royal couple. At times there was maybe too much information about various family members and friends as it was easy to lose track of who was who. Fans of the royal family would enjoy this book.
One of the most wonderful love stories that we celebrate after the passing of Prince Philip. I always love an inside look into the royal family and see how they start out and live, and love, just like many of us. First released in 1987 this book is still a treasure and I’m glad their love story is again being shared with the world
This book by Helen Cathcart seemed more like a catalogue of events covering the Queen's life up until her "annus horribilis" rather than giving great insights into the relationship between the Queen and Prince Philip. I learnt a few new things but not much. I guess that this is being re-published in the aftermath of the death of Prince Philip.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.
Originally published in 1987 to commemorate their Ruby Wedding Anniversary and reissued a few days after the death of Prince Philip, this book pulls together various sources and weaves a narrative of the couple's childhoods, courtship and married life. Subtitled "The Early Years", we are in fact taken through to the 1980s, including the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. Containing interesting insights, certain aspects become overwhelmed with meandering details which are difficult to follow without reference to external sources. Unfortunately this made the book a somewhat challenging read, especially in light of the lack of photographs and family trees.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Was really looking forward to reading this book. Was lovely to learn more about them both and especially loved hearing more about the queen. But I did find it went back and forth abit and got so confused over the amount of people being mentioned that I had to Google the family tree to remind myself who is who.
This book was originally published in 1987 to coincide with The Queen and Prince Philip's Ruby wedding anniversary. However it is interesting reading and all the more poignant due to the recent death of The Duke Of Edinburgh. It covers their first meeting engagement, marriage and coronation with quotes from other people in the Royal household. To begin with there are lots of family members mentioned and this can be confusing but once beyond that it was enjoyable
Many thanks to Netgalley and publishers for the opportunity to read the advanced copy in exchange for my own honest opinion
The Queen and Prince Philip: The Early Years is a delightful read by Helen Cathcart.
I have never been a huge fan of the Royal family, but with recent events, I have become intrigued.
I am thrilled to have discovered this book, finding it lovely and sweet, as well as informative.
The author takes a look back at how Elizabeth and Philip meet and their family life that followed.
I'm not going to give much detail. Either you know a lot about them already, or you'll learn along the way. Actually, either way, you'll probably learn more through this book.
The writing is great, written in a British tone for sure. It's a great nod to the long romance between the couple.
This is definitely worth a read for anyone interested in the Royal family.
The Queen and Prince Philip: The Early Years was an interesting look at Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip's upbringing, meeting, courtship and eventual marriage. It offered insight into the dynamic of their relationship in ways that other books I've read on the royal family failed to do. I was puzzled as to why it ended after the marriage of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, but then discovered the book had originally been published in 1987, a year after the York wedding. With Prince Philip's death earlier this month, The Queen and Prince Philip: The Early Years would be a good introduction to the life and achievements of the man who spent his life supporting the Queen.
This seemed well written, researched and was a charming look at Prince Philip and the Queen's earlier relationship.Although on reflection I think I would have preferred a more up close and personal biography rather than just following the events they attended and who they were with. The stories seemed to get side tracked from our main couple.I did enjoy it however and I just couldn't pass up the chance to read something featuring Prince Philip as we are currently remembering his life.Much thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.
