This is the third book in this series and I have tried exceeding hard go love, but I can’t. They’re good enough, but as someone who has read so many historical romances, they just don’t do it for me, and it pains me so much to write that.
Richard is my preferred hero. Socially awkward yet visually and emotionally appealing. Celia is the heroine you love to hate. I found the story enjoyable and the supporting characters entertaining. I also liked that there were side stories interwoven within the main. Definitely worth the read.
Thank you Minerva Spencer, Kensington Books and NetGalley for allowing me an advance copy for my honest feedback.
Let me start by saying I LOVE this series, I just wasn't a fan of this trope. Overall, this book is very good. It's an easy but exciting read. Typical "mean" girl, Celia, gets her come-uppance while the girl she bullied ends up with her perfect life. BUT WAIT! The boy who had a crush on her turns out to be the "belle of the ball" once he made it through those awkward teenager years. Just icing on the cake to see how far Celia has fallen from grace. Except she realizes she was wrong and she had her focus on the wrong things. She's grown up now. She understands the world and understands people. Richard sees past her flaws and her history to see Celia as she is now and he is still very much intrigued by what he sees. But Celia has a big secret that has ruined any chances she has at a comfortable life unless her Knight in shining armor can look past it...
This was a fun read and the series is a must have for a light-hearted romance full of thrilling plot twists and happy endings. 8/10- would recommend even if this isn't my favorite trope, others will love it!
I am so glad I found this lurking in my To Read pile! It was absolutely enchanting from beginning till the end. What an amazing plot and characters with such depth, humanity and personality! This has to be the best historical romance I ha e ever read!!
This novel was not what I expected, based on the description provided. I was prepared to be intrigued and reacquainted with my love of Regency romances, a la Georgette Heyer. I liked the characters and the basic story line. I enjoyed the quirkiness of Richard and his interest in insects. However, I did not like the descriptive and explicit steamy sex, which smacked me in the face at the very beginning of the book.. This may be my own personal preference, but there was no indication of this aspect of the book when I read the synopsis. Readers should be warned about encountering these graphic scenes before they purchase the book.
I received this novel from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are completely my own.
Okay this story had me worried because I absolutely loved the other two books, but this one I couldn’t stand Celia at the beginning and I knew she was one of the main love interests. But I should have trusted Minerva Spencer more because I think this may be my favorite story of the series so far. It was so different from the first two but it still had that chemistry that other two had. I was dreading reading it at the beginning and I was dreading the end because I did not want it to end. Lol
Once again Ms Spencer awed me. The story of Richard, one of Hugh Redvers' step son from previous series, who got himself tangled with his old flame. I was engaged to the tale right away. And as always, she did spin a wonderful story, our author. It was an out of the box story, as usual, with a surprising twist.
Celia was a mean girl who made fun of Richard, Viscount Redvers and a girl who became Richard's sister-in-law cause of something Celia did after the incedent that caused The girl to become Richard's sister-in-law she dropped out of popperlaity and became a ladies companion. The lady gets invited to a wedding which takes place at the home of the person she wronged. Richard who was infatuated with Celia they start exploring their feelings during the wedding. this is a great book
The third book in the series maybe the best one yet, I like the story there was a lot going on and I liked the characters. Great addition to the series looking forward to reading more of the author’s work.
Does great beauty excuse reprehensible behavior? Sadly, Miss Celia Trent finds that a lovely face and delectable figure aren't protection enough against the ton's scorn when one night's prank leads to her banishment from polite society. With her planned marriage to the Incomparable Lucien "Luce" Redmond in tatters, she must adapt to the harshness of her reduced circumstance.
Ten years later, we meet the former mean girl - Lady Infamous, to the scandal sheets of her day - now Mrs. Pelham, beauty intact and companion to an inscrutable dowager Marchioness and her menagerie. Celia is horrified to discover that she must attend a Christmas house party in the company of enemies - including the villain who urged her towards ruin - and hosted by none other than her former intended.
Enter Richard Redvers.
Luce's formerly pimply, red-faced and bespectacled twin, Richard has blossomed into a fine specimen of male beauty - and lauded entomologist. Now a firm favorite with the ladies, he's always lusted after Celia. With roles reversed - and Celia being tormented by an old foe- the two pick their way into each other's lives and hearts.
Meanwhile, as a result of Miss Celia's long-ago malignant antics, Lucien and the clever but plainer-than-plain Phyllida were forced to wed. They have three children and what seems to be a successful political marriage, but with little warmth, just as Phil wants it. In a fit of melancholy, Luce decides that he wants a real marriage - with emotions and love and all of the sticky stuff romantic attraction entails. Will his wife have it, or is she too afraid to make a new start on more impractical terms?
What makes this book different-
- No shy, wilting, innocent protagonist. Celia's mistakes have led her to difficult circumstances, but she does not appear ashamed of *most* of her choices. She's made the best of a terrible situation, and has become a self-aware woman as a result. She asks for what she desires from Richard during a sensual encounter *and gets it*.
- A soft-hearted male who truly loves his wife and craves passion and romance *with her*. Luce is no longer a Golden Boy, but a thoughtful, intelligent, caring man. His good looks may have faded somewhat but his personality has grown. He may have been saddled with an unwanted bride, but soon resolved to make the best of it and (well, unbelievably) stuck by his wife's ridiculous terms.
- Believable story lines based on the characters as we meet them. There are no 11th hour revelations - we all know what the villain will get theirs eventually - or about-faces. People are who they are. How much do individuals change over the course of a lifetime. Some (Richard, Celia), a great deal, others (Luce, the villain, Steph) stay the same.
I rate this book 3.5/5*, due to the secondary storyline (Luce and Phil) which did not engage me as much as Celia and Richard. It's a pleasant read with some laugh-out-loud moments and assertive lovemaking scenes.
Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for an Advance Copy of this book!
This was the best of the series thus far!
Celia & Richard were a fantastic pair.
Some saucy bits and enough of a storyline to keep things moving between spice.
Loved everything about this one!!!
Much love to NetGalley & Kensington Books for my DRC.
Infamous by Minerva Spencer is the third book of The Rebels of the Ton Series and I ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED THIS BOOK!
Richard and Lucien Redvers are twins but oh so different. Lucien wants to marry Celia Trent... and Richard is attracted to her too. But a really scandalous incident changes everything...
Now (years later) Celia meets the twins again... und different and really surprising circumstances.
Oh how much I adored this story!
I wanted to read it as fast as possible... but at the same I wanted to read slooowly so it's not over so fast.
So the struggle was real!
I loved that this book is more about two couples than just one.
We've got a whole interesting story line where you can find the POVs of Richard and Celia and Lucien and Phil!
It was something new for me to have like to couples in one book!
I loved that you've got a whole lot of different themes here: romance, affection, attraction, suspense, drama and intrigues, laughter and familiar bond, festivities and so much more.
A wonderful story who's perfect for the Christmas time.
Thanks to Kensington Books and Minerva Spencer for this ARC via Netgalley.
I'm really sorry for my delayed review and hope for you acceptance.
☆ This is my honest review in my own words. ☆
*4.5 stars*
I adore Minerva Spencer, but her Rebels of the Ton series has been a bit underwhelming for me. However, Infamous blew the rest of them out of the water, and I stayed up all night to finish it.
I love the intense, flawed characters that Minerva Spencer always brings me, and this book was no different. Celia starts off the book as a wiiiiitch (with a *b*), and I simply hated her, even though I knew this author would redeem her in the end. It did take awhile to warm to her, but I grew to understand her and her motivations.
Richard was a breath of fresh air, mostly oblivious to drama and simply focused on what he wants. I WISH I could be more like him, most unaffected. I liked his relationship with Celia, and I liked how he really didn't bring any of the past with him into his present relationship with her (I am *much* more petty...).
I enjoyed the side romance story between two of the side characters (Richard's twin and his wife), and I loved how everything wove together. I couldn't put this book down, and I read until the wee hours of the morning.
Simply put, Minerva Spencer just writes historical romance that I love to read. Her stories are always interesting and have explosive chemistry, and she redeemed the Rebels of the Ton series with Infamous.
I love The Rebels of the Ton series and this book is no different. Infamous is the third book in the series and this one follows Richard and Celia. While it is no secret that the first book is my favorite (I mean, Gabriel Marlington people!) but Richard Redvers does make a very close second in my opinion. Celia was once a lady of the Ton and not a very nice one. Richard was often the object of her cruel tongue. When a practical joke goes wrong one night, Celia is dubbed “Lady Infamous” and forced out of the Ton. Years later, and a wicked since of fate, Celia is to attend her employer at the very house and with the very people she once wronged… including Richard. Richard is now older, better dressed, and grown into his body and still has no interest in the people and politics of the Ton but when he sees Celia he can’t seem to remover her from his mind…. No one can. Will Celia make amends with those she wronged?
If there is one thing that Spencer does and does well it’s to bring you into the time and invest you in these characters. When reading her words I am fully brought into the story the world building. Sometimes with historical romance, authors focus more on the romance aspect and less on the world but with the Rebels of the Ton series Spencer not only gives us the romance and the swagger of these characters but she also brings the Ton of the times to life.
Riveting! I couldnt put it down! Years after the Incident that cast her out of Londons high society, Celia must face her past and the demons that haunt her when she accompanies her employer to the household of someone she wronged for a wedding. Can she break free from her mistakes and embrace a future shes only dreamed about?
I am a big fan of Romance books and I found this one to be a very enjoyable read. I will be looking for more books from this author.
Ten years ago, Celia Trent made a mistake that cost her everything, and now she's being forced to revisit the ghosts of her past. Can she prove that she's changed to the one family she wronged the most?
This was not bad, but I didn't love it. The sub-story with the other characters added depth to the book, but overall I didn't have much of a connection to any of them. A decent read for fans of this genre, and I wouldn't be opposed to trying other books by the author, but it wasn't what I was hoping for. Good, but not great.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ out of 5
This book was pure gold! I was as invested in the secondary couple as much as the primary couple and it just gave me all the feels! I wasn’t sure how I would like this with the heroine being a former bully (which is a no go area for me) but this book and it’s detailed characters full of depth blew me away.
Our heroine once had the Ton at her feet, however to be the reigning queen bee she trampled over a lot of people. She fell off her pedestal and years later she is now a companion to an elderly lady and has managed to live obscurely until her employer is invited to a ton wedding and she encounters her former friends as well as those she used to bully. Our scientist hero used to be one of her main targets to bully, but seeing him all grown up now makes her feel things she wasn’t expecting.
I have a soft spot for heroes that are analytical and don’t believe in love- because you know when they fall it’s going to be HARD. It was so refreshing to read a forward thinking, feminist hero who honestly just gets it- I wanted to clap multiple times through this book. As for the heroine she came a long way from her bully days and owns who she is and what she did completely. The chemistry between the two is off the charts and it was just a fantastic read!
I received and eARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I can definitely say that I enjoyed this book the most in the Rebels of the Ton series. Once I sat down to read it, I did not want to put it down.
This story follows Celia, who is known as Lady Infamous. Celia earned the title as a young girl in her first season. Without giving too much away, she makes some bad choices that have repercussions on not only her, but several other people. Fast forward to Celia as a grown woman. She has removed herself from society since that ill-fated season. She is now forced back into the company of those she hurt and those who led her down that path of destruction.
I really enjoyed Celia's growth as she trys to make amends with several people from her past. There is, romance, redemption, and retribution.
I have to say I was a bit disappointed in choice of hero from the last book, he had a very minor character in the last book. In the end I did very much end om liking the main hero, so I will not complain. But I do have a bit problem with that he is “the main hero” because he is not the only hero we follow. We also follow his twin brother, to a smaller extended, but he and his heroine does play a big part of the story. So, we do get to follow the perspective from all four people in these two couples. I was not a super fan of this decision, I did not like the other souple at all and it feel unnecessary. What I did end up liking the most is most definitely the main hero; he was very different from most heroes and is always nice with some fresh air. I think historical romance from the same time period easily end up in a big blur, then it is nice with characters that stand out form the rest. I can really see what the author tried to do with the heroine, and I have to say it was a bald choice, unfortunately I was not a super fan of her. I had a hard time liking her and wishing her to have a happy ending. I would say this is more about my own preference than the story itself.
So, I liked this book over all even if it may not sound like it. I attribute this fact that I think that the writing was overall was good. If you like memorable historical romances, I do think you should read it!
