After reading this excerpt I immediately requested this book! I can't wait to pick it up since I was recently approved.
The Siren by Katherine St. John reminds me of the great summer reads written years ago by Jackie Collins that I read as a teenager when my mother wasn't looking. There are many famous people behaving poorly on a film set in the Caribbean while a possible hurricane brews. Sex, drugs, and murder are all fueling this plot. Read on a steamy day and enjoy!
I did not realize that this was just an excerpt so I cannot review the book. I would really like to read the whole book if that is possible!
From the 50ish pages, this novel sounds really good! There was so much excitement and suspense already and I 10000% need to buy the book and finish reading!!!
I received a free copy of an excerpt of this book from NetGalley.
LOVED this. I really loved the book too, but was only given access to the excerpt. Definitely enjoyed the book and it's totally worth a read.
4/5 Stars
Right off the bat, I was taken by what a creative writer Ms St. John is. Very impressive! However, I felt that much of the story was confusing, and I didn't care for the language.
I received a free copy of an excerpt of this book from NetGalley. This review is of the purchased of the book.
What happens when members of Hollywood's elite meet on a tropical Caribbean island to shoot a new film? In Katherine St. John's The Siren, murder is what happens. Told in the voices of the three main female characters, this tale of trauma, love, and vengeance will satisfy the #metoo generation, as once more a powerful mysogynist meets his doom at the hands of the women he's wronged.
Cole Power, Hollywood golden boy and leading man offers to fund his son's Jackson's first full-length film project. He requests his ex-wife, Stella, to play opposite him, and Taylor Wasserman, daughter of another powerful Hollywood figure, to be the producer. Stella brings her personal assistant, Felicity Fox, to ensure she stays sober and employable. All of these characters have dark secrets, and they all mistrust each other. As the shooting progresses, these secrets come to the surface, revealing Cole to be a vicious, ugly person, capable of all manner of despicable offenses against women.
As is common in this trope, the solution to the violence Cole Power (isn't that a great subliminal message wrapped up in a name?) commits is violence against Cole Power. With a hurricane bearing down on the island, the women must band together to ensure he pays for his sins and never harms another woman. It's a well-written plot, spinning like the tropical storm in ever widening waves of terror, retribution, and female vengeance. It's a celebration of the triumph of women over male power, their strength and ingenuity in the face of adversity, and the love that brings peace when the storm subsides.
It's also incredibly disturbing Why is the answer to male power female violence and murder? There are so many ways women are strong and beautiful, so many ways we overcome adversity and the obstacles placed in our paths. Do we need books that indulge our baser instincts and glorify destroying powerful men instead of beating them at their own game? I know. It's only fiction, some will say. And in this case it is very well written fiction. Ms. St. John knows how to weave a plot and keep the pages turning and my misgivings have little to do with her or the literary merits of this book. But this trend to paint men as abusive, nasty narcissists and women as having no recourse except to rid the world of their ilk bothers me. Because men are not that simple. For every mysogynist trying to keep women 'in their place' there are hundreds of decent, honest men who treat women with honor and respect. They may be exasperating, or a little uneducated in the interpretation of the female mind and heart, but they aren't looking for ways to rape, abuse, and torment.
If we continue to glorify the destruction of men, how long before real life begins to mirror fiction in ways that are detrimental to society as a whole? That's a bigger question than a book review can answer but as you read this book, and its sisters in the genre, ask yourself, "Do two wrongs make a right?" And maybe, instead of trying to balance the scales, we can strive for mutual respect and admiration.
From the first chapters this novel sounds really good. There is a lot going on already that undoubtedly will lead to tension, likely secrets uncovered, movie set drama and more. I definitely want to read. In fact, I just got it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the deliciously twisty mystery thriller you NEED for the summer. A perfect beach reach full of dark secrets and a murder mystery that has haunted four people's lives since one fateful night 13 years ago. When a movie brings them all together on a tropical island everyone's motives are suspect and tension builds to a satisfying climax as a gale-force hurricane descends upon them and a manipulative killer strikes. Told from multiple POVs, from the washed up actress, her assistant, the budding social media obsessed starlet, the movie producer and director and the veteran actor at the heart of it all. Highly recommend this action packed thrill ride with great characterization and suspense!! Excellent on audio - I enjoyed every second! (Review from the full version listened after publication).
I enjoyed this excerpt and am looking forward to finishing the book. I enjoyed the characters and the setting. It seems like a fun beach read.
At first, I would like to thank Netgalley and Grandcentralpub for allowing me to review this book. Keep in mind that my review, however, is my true opinion on this book.
I was very excited to read “The Siren” by Katherine St. John, because I have heard a lot about it. And it is the perfect summer-book! Katherine St. John is the author of “The Lion’s Den”, so she has surely done a good job of writing beautiful books in the past as well.
It is a very interesting plot and take on the story, by making it about Hollywood and the behind-the-scenes.
Katherine St. John is a phenomenal storyteller and writer! Her writing style is engaging, interesting and heartwarming - as well as filled with suspense and eagerness.
This read made me even more excited about Katherine St. John and her book. “The siren” is the perfect beach read for your summer!
For now, I have only read the first few chapters of the book. But I will defenitely read the rest of it - I am very excited to do so, and I will give you a heads up, when I have finished reading this masterpiece!
I am so excited to read the full book. Katherine St John writes such delightfully wicked characters and this preview makes me so stoked.
This was my first time reading Katherine St. John and it was a really fun preview! Tropical setting, a Hollywood crowd, and what looks like lots of secrets to uncover. I plan to pick up a copy to read in full! Would be a make a great beach read.
I was looking forward to reading this one after The Lion’s Den. However, it was not for me. The narrative style and over description felt like it was trying too hard. I don’t think I will be reading the rest of this book.
I can't really give a review for an excerpt, since it won't be complete. So I can't really say much about this book.
This is my first book by Katherine St. John, but going into this book I had seen only rave reviews about her previous novel, The Lion's Den. In the beginning the author is setting up the story and providing background knowledge on each of the characters. I can already tell there are a ton of secrets and I'm eager to continue reading to find out what happens.
I have to admit, I never got around to reading The Lion's Den, so I didn't have anything to compare this to, in regards to her previous work. From what I have read so far in the excerpt, this looks to be a juicy beach read that is part gossip column, part romance novel, and part thriller. I am interested in reading the rest of the book when it comes out to see how it all works out.
This excerpt quickly drew me in!! I definitely plan to grab a finished copy so I can continue this juicy story!
My review is based on an excerpt of The Siren and the whole book. It is a slow beginning as the author sets up the characters and the location. It feels like there will be some drama and secrets as more actors are introduced. Thank you to NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing.
I don't think I realized I was only getting an excerpt copy when I originally hit request on this book. However, what I did read of this one was good! Impossible to give a star rating based on the amount I was able to read, but I do have high hopes for the rest of the book. Thank you Netgalley!
