I binged The Lion's Den last summer in a day and was so excited to pick up her newest!
This is another escapist, atmospheric read. The story is told from three women's POVs: Stella - the unstable actress after some public breakdowns, Taylor, a young producer hoping to turn her career around after a scandal, and Felicity, Stella's new assistant. As the story unfolded, while each POV added to the story, I found I wasn't very invested in one storyline and character POV and thought this could have easily been a dual POV format instead.
This was a bit slower to get into but once you really figured out the characters, the secrets, and who was lying to who - I had to see how it all shook out. Each character had several secrets that would be career ending and wanted to see hidden. The ending is satisfying and feels very complete.
I didn't realize this was going to just be a preview, but I loved it and would love to read the rest of the novel. Thanks to the publisher for providing an ecopy preview.
I was very excited to receive an excerpt of The Siren from Netgalley. I loved Katherine St. John's last novel, The Lion's Den. This one captured my attention as well immediately. I can't wait to read this rest!
The Siren by Katherine St. John is a fun, light read. I like the different characters and the could see how each character is bringing their own point of view, motives to the story and how those motives intertwined. The writing is a bit over descriptive - the first paragraph alone – “She was perched on a rock like a siren the first time I saw her, face upturned to the sun, copper skin wet with sea spray. Her toes dangled languidly into the mottled azure water while palm fronds fluttered overhead, casting pom-pom shadows on the powdered sugar sand.” A bit much in my opinion. At times the story seems confusing, jumping from one character’s narrative to a flashback such as an old magazine article regarding two other characters before jumping back to another character. For example, the article from Celeb Spotter – Stole Getting Married? – I don’t know who Stole is? Is Stole the character that Cole played in the movie “Faster”, is Stole the name given to Stella & Cole as a couple? It took reading it several times before I figured out the moniker. It was a bit confusing to figure out what the flashback was trying to convey. Overall, I enjoyed the story, like the writing style and would be interested in reading more to see what each woman is hiding, what is their motive for doing the movie and where the story goes.
The first four chapters of The Siren by Katherine St. John are such a great introduction to the juicy gossip and really pulled me in. I definitely want to read the whole book now, and am interested to know what happens with all the characters!
Thank you NetGalley and Grand Central Publishing for my excerpt of The Siren in exchange for my honest review!
I only got the excerpt of this, but I really enjoyed what I read and look forward to reading the rest of it!
I actually didn’t realize this was an excerpt when I requested it. I didn’t want to read this too thoroughly since I don’t want spoilers before I read the book. I am giving a star rating of 3 since I have to leave one but this could change once I read the book.
Looks like it will be a fun book in the same vein as her prior novel I read last year. Can't wait to read the whole novel b/c I really loved Lion's Den.
Thank you NetGalley, Grand Central Publishing and Katherine St. John for my excerpt of The Siren in exchange for my honest review!
I accidentally requested the excerpt first! Oops!!I knew I was interested in the book just by the synopsis!
The first four chapters were a great way to pull the reader in. I was left wanting more and I’m thankful I was able to get the full copy (after my accidental request for the excerpt)!
This novel was on my radar and I was so excited to find the excerpt available from Grand Central Publishing and Netgalley. While the first chapter didn’t initially hook me I was definitely hooked by the end of the preview. The alternating points of view, which sometimes detracts from stories in my opinion, really added to the intrigue of the book. I can’t wait to get a full copy of the book and see where the story goes.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Grand Central Publishing for the excerpt of The Siren.
First off, I am loving the idyllic setting of the book paired with the seemingly hot mess of characters and juicy gossip. The addition of excerpts from interviews and news articles is something I love in a book.
I’m completely intrigued and cannot wait to pick up a copy so I can see how the rest of the book plays out!
after these few chapters, I am definitely sold! I have been a big fan of Katherine St. John and this was nothing different! I am absolutely hooked and I was awnting so much more once the excerpt was done! Definitely adding this to my TBR
Thanks to Grand Central Publishing for the copy and NetGalley for the excerpt. All opinions are my own.
The Siren features an interwoven cast of characters dropped on a Caribbean island to make a movie called The Siren. Each character holds a missing piece of the puzzle to a death over 13 years ago. When brought together under the guise of the movie, this group will resort to lying, deception, and greed in order to keep their individual names in the clear. In a book where no one is what they seem, appearances are everything and a perfect facade for the camera is the difference between life and death.
Wow. I was super impressed with The Siren. Even though thrillers tend to start slower for me, this book immediately drew me in with the interwoven storylines that were so intriguing. The addition of the newspaper articles, memoir chapters, and social media posts kept the book moving quickly, begging me to read more.
I loved how there was such a subtle difference between each character's perception of events and the truth. It was a perfect "he said, she said" plot that had me guessing until the very end. And those last 100 pages were so intense!
My favorite part of the book was the character development. It's so rare to read a book where you both despise and root for a character all at the same time. And I did this with every single character!
This is definitely a book I will recommend to others! I can't wait to go back and read The Lion's Den now.
I'm really taken with the characters so far. Stella surprised me and I found myself wanting to know more about her immediately. I really liked the hint at a twist with Felicity and her relationship with her Mother. I'd liked to have learnt more about Cole and his son in the excerpt but I enjoyed all the characters we met and I'm already hooked and eager to know more about Taylor's evening and background. I'll be buying the book for sure!
The cover is gorgeous and the blurb was intriguing. However in the few chapters offered, even though I found the writing style interesting, I wasn't taken with the stakes. Not for me.
This excerpt has me HOOKED. I can't wait to devour the full book. Because this isn't the full book, I can't give it the full 5 stars because the actual book might be super disappointing (which I doubt). St. John writes compellingly and really understands how to engage her readers.
* I read an excerpt from Netgalley since I was on the fence about whether I would love this one. Such a great cover!
Color me surprised when I loved that little excerpt! The MC is funny and witty. I loved the atmosphere or high-maintenance stars while they filmed and the background slowly slipped between chapters. I also loved the gossip at the start of each chapter. How fun, I'll definitely get my hands on the rest to read!
What's the best part of a preview ?
For me it is certainly when the excerpt entices you enough to read the whole book and at the end of the chapters provided you are seeking the next page with a confused frown !
This was it for me. After all, just the premice of a Caribbean set up with Hollywood drama, a fiming movie on an isolated island with several unlikeable characters with a messy background and a difficult history between them is enough for me. But add to it a thriller and a mystery to be resolved and I'm 100% in !
I will definitely pick up the rest of the book as soon as possible as now I'm surely intrigued.
I have the other book of Katherine St John, the Lion's den in my TBR and this has definetly helped it move a few spots !
Thank you so much for the preview I can't wait for this to be released I ordered my copy just as soon as I finished reading it!! Love her books!!
This was a preview (excerpt) of the book I really enjoyed what I was given I can't wait to see haw it plays out or finishes
My thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for the excerpt in exchange for an honest review.
Katherine St. John is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors
Movie star Cole Powers is staring in The Sirens, a film directed by his son, with his ex-wife Stella Rivers. The book follows Taylor, a producer who was recently involved in a scandal, along with Stella and her assistant Felicity. Filming takes place during hurricane season on the Caribbean island of St. Genesius. It seems like all of the lies revolve around Cole, who is not be the man the public thinks he is.
The flashbacks are cool and hopefully will help understand the motive and add depth to the characters.
