An amazing story about a young girl and her journey to uncover her personal identity. Browne's seamless flow between prose and verse made me feel as if I was listening to one of Angel's playlists. I will definitely be adding this to my classroom library and recommending it to my students.
I absolutely devoured this book and will definitely be recommending it to our high schoolers and adding it to the library. I loved the flow between verse and prose throughout the novel.
The element that really shone for me is the female advisory and friendships - it was so real and so inspiring and I loved how Browne wove their story together of lifting each other up and becoming leaders in their community.
I absolutely loved this book and think it will work perfectly for my freshman class next year! I devoured it. I loved Angel and thought she had a great character arc and I love books that show how life changing books can be without feeling heavy handed. This is a great book!
Vinyl Moon is a beautiful must read book. Browne weaves a story of loss and discovery in a story that moves along swiftly with a variety of prose. Angel finds peace after a traumatic ending to a relationship and a cross country move. With the words of authors that came before her, classmates, and mentors, she discovers who she is and her voice.
Angel has been forced to relocate to live with her family in Brooklyn and isn’t sure how she’ll heal with her past. She is lucky to have a class surrounded by other brave and outspoken girls to analyze literature that can revive her spirit.
As a Brooklynite, it was easy to picture the settings and truth in Brooklyn life— Albee square, the perfect Timbs, indulging in local classics. I can see a lot of my Brooklyn middle school students resonating with this. I also appreciated the verse throughout the story, following other poet-writers like Acevedo and Stone. However, I felt like a lot of these characters’ personalities felt flat and I was disappointed. I do think again that this piece will resonate with YA readers specifically in NYC and look forward to trying out Browne’s future works. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC!
I loved this story of female friendship and the bonds that can be made when they are allowed be themselves. Angel’s story, revealed in pieces throughout the book, demonstrated her strength and resilience. At the end, you believe she will be ok. Plus, the conversations and cameraderie generated within this class they share reminds me of Harbor Me by Jacqueline Woodson. Loved that book, too.
Wow this was such an amazing book! I loved the bits of poetry sprinkled throughout and how much depth the characters had. This is a great discussion book about starting over, finding yourself again, and moving on.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC!

Angel has moved to live with her uncle in New York after an incident with her ex-boyfriend. She’s going through the motions until she’s put in H.E.R. Advisory, run by Mrs. G. In addition to being in this group of young women who share about their days, likes/dislikes, hopes and dreams, Angel also starts falling in love with reading and music. Both begin to heal, not just her broken arm, but her broken heart and soul.

Browne is quickly becoming one of my favorite YA authors. I loved how she melded free verse within the story. My heart broke for Angel, but she is such a strong character. I also can’t deny I loved her new passion for literature. Thank you Netgalley for an ARC. It will release on 1.11.22.
This short novel about Angel, a California girl who makes a fresh start in Brooklyn after her boyfriend’s abuse sends her to the hospital and him to jail, is long on story, character, and inspiration. Finding security with her favorite uncle, Angel embraces her new town and new school, especially her leadership group and revolutionary lit class, where she digs into books by writers of color and develops relationships with adults and peers who’ve got her back. Vinyl Moon pulsates with the stories, music, people, and city life that prompt Angel to create her own poetry and mixtapes and to find healing and hope.
This Angel gets her wings, and we get to fly with her! I can't wait to share Vinyl Moon with students, teachers, and friends-- don’t miss it!
Angel is sent to Brooklyn to live with her uncle after an incident with her ex-boyfriend lands her in the hospital. As she struggles to adjust to her new neighborhood away from her siblings and friends, the only place where she feels comfortable is in her revolutionary literature class. She discovers a passion for reading and making mixtapes based on her favorite books, which she uses to process her trauma and heal.
This is going to be such an easy title to booktalk to teens, especially to hi-lo and reluctant readers. Browne's prose is simple but powerful, and the short chapters are interspersed with poems that make this a quick but impactful read. Perfect to recommend to fans of Elizabeth Acevedo & Jason Reynolds.
I can not wait to get a hard copy of this book for my classroom! I KNOW my students are going to love it. In her second book the author blends the lyricism of her own words and the rhythm of music to show how people can heal from the tragedies and struggles they have suffered through. Each of the characters in the story has a backstory, but each of them has found a light, a way to overcome and a meaning in their life that begins and ends with their happiness. This is such an important message for young people. With a Brooklyn back drop come late with Timbs and Jamaican Meat Patties, I know my students will love this book as much as I did!
