Know that this isn't a cowboy novel but that it does have a lot of steam. A lot. Lily's testimony put a bad guy in prison. She's made a life for herself as a teacher but she doesn't share her past. Then Levi shows up. He's an undercover US Marshal who is charged with keeping her safe. You know what's going to happen. There are huge plot holes here and it doesn't comport with how things like WITSEC (and other USG agencies) work but the characters and the romance carry it through. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. For Leigh's fans.
Her Renegade Cowboy
Book 3 in the Moving Violations Series
Rating: 2 stars
Thank you to the publisher for the ARC given through NetGalley for review. All opinions are my own.
***********SPOILERS*********SPOILERS*********
I had read book 2 in the series and gave it the same rating. I should of stayed away from this one. I did read it all, but I did skim some parts.
Why the 2 stars? I just couldn't stand Lily. She's what you could call TSTL female lead. She made some dumb decisions who put people and even a horse at risk. All because she was so stubborn to admit that she needed protection. A year ago she went through a traumatic experience that lead to an arrest. He then escapes and is determined to find her and finish what he started.
Because she refused protection Levi was sent to protect her without her knowledge. What then happens is that they are immediately very physically attracted to each other. They immediately start a relationship, which is okay, but what I found annoying was that she would push him away one minute and then start kissing him the next one.
It's a personal preference but I like the slow build up of two people getting to know each other, but it did not happen with these two. Theirs was more of an insta-lust relationship.
Lily's only redeeming point for me is that at the end she admits being stubborn for not accepting help and protection...well if she would of accepted the help sooner she, her sister and Levi would of not had gotten hurt. She thought herself able to do it on her own when she could easily accepted help even if it wasn't Levi's.
I've come to the conclusion that I will stop here in the series.
Her Renegade Cowboy is a romantic suspense story about a school teacher, Lily and a cowboy, Levi. Lily and Levi are drawn to each other from the time they meet. But they are hiding secrets, which can make the foundation of what they are building crumble.
This is a fun, sexy, suspenseful and romantic read. It was an engaging read and with some strong characters. I enjoyed this book and hope we get more in the series.
I could not put this story down!
Loved it from beginning to end.
Loved the suspense. Loved the characters and I loved the addition to the series.
Pretty much new favourite author!
Levi is sent to protect Lily without her knowledge, but things take an unexpected turn and love was never meant to be a part of the assignment. This is a suspense filled story that is beautifully written and entertaining. The danger is real and eventually disposed of but a lot happens first. I loved this story and would highly recommend it as a great read.
I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley and are voluntarily leaving a review.
A Slow Read
I found this a difficult read because I didn’t much like the characters nor did I feel any emotional attachment between them. I picked it up and put it down a number of times. The actual suspense element doesn’t happen until you are three-quarters of the way through the story and from there on I enjoyed it.
Levi was very unprofessional in going after Lily from the very beginning even though it will cost him his job. I could understand it if there had been a buildup and you had him struggling with his desire (and his conscience, with the secret he was hiding) before succumbing but instead it was a rush to bed her and move in with her. And it never seemed to bother him much that he was deceiving her.
With regard to Lily I thought it was selfish of her to ask her cousin’s wife to keep such an important secret from her husband. At best when it came out it was likely to cause a serious rift between husband and wife and if things had gone badly it would have destroyed their marriage.
Got very tired of both of them mentally planning to tell the other their truths and then chickening out.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
"Her Renegade Cowboy" by Lora Leigh
Lots of Pages of Sizzle
A good contemporary suspense story with a trace of romance expressed as lots of more explicit sex scenes than I cared to read.
NOTE: I received an ARC of this story from the publisher via NetGalley.
This review expresses my honest opinion of this story.
Strong Romance - With A Couple Of Issues. As a romance book, this one works. It has the all the requisite parts and even a couple of the optional ones - clean/ sweet crowd, you're not going to like all the XXX sex in this one, and there is more of it here than many romance novels, even those that include such scenes. As a bit of a psychological drama, it still kind of works, with the female lead clearly having issues she needs to work through. As a suspense... well, the only actual action here occurs in the last few chapters, the rest of the suspense here is more of the "looming threat" variety. Which works well enough here, but never really makes the pulse pound.
No, there really are two primary issues, one of which has been mentioned by at least one other reviewer and the other of which no existing review on Goodreads mentions: First, this is a female who it is made quite clear fairly early on (to the reader) has been assaulted. While there is indeed a fair amount of studies and even anecdotes of this turning the woman a bit promiscuous - for a variety of reasons - the more general feel seems to be that women become much more closed off to sex after this, particularly when still struggling with dealing with the events - as our female lead here is. And yet, the sex scenes here start pretty damn rapidly once she and our male lead connect. Again, in-story, it works well enough. This is mostly a "wait a second" level observation after the story, at least for this reader. (For others, it may well be a true game-stopper.)
The other issue, that hasn't been mentioned in a Goodreads review yet, is the constant mention of a gun's "clip". NO! It is a "magazine" or "mag". It is NOT a "clip", and a former Army Ranger and current US Marshall would *damn* well know this! Still, even with this rather glaring example of complete unfamiliarity with the subject, it is one that readers similarly unfamiliar with the subject would think works reasonably well within the story.
And then there is the whole thing about this being titled as a cowboy story... and yet there is very little cowboy'ing happening here. Other than a ride inspecting fence posts, the rest of the "ranch" scenes could pretty well have any other location as their base of operations and the book would both read and work the same, almost without any even word changes.
Still, these are mostly more observational level issues that didn't really detract from the book - other than the "clip" / "magazine thing - and the story itself, even with the magazine issue, is pretty solid with an action packed ending. And despite being marked as "Book 3" here, it actually works quite well as a standalone, which is how I read it.
Very much recommended.
I love a great cowboy romance and Lora Leigh delivered a great one in Her Renegade Cowboy! I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Lily can hold her own with Levi!
What a yummy story! Hot alpha cowboy *and* a US Marshal all wrapped up in one, Levi will make even your grandma swoon. He has to hide his undercover status, especially when under the covers with Lily. At first protecting her is his job, but it soon becomes his mission in life.
There were a couple times I thought Lily must've been a couple fries short of a happy meal to be so blasé about the risks she was taking, but clearly she felt her anonymity and family connections were enough to keep her safe.
I loved the romance between these two - very steamy, of course, but also well-grounded in their emotional investment in each other. I loved seeing the extended family again, and getting to know a few familiar characters even better. The entire book was a fantastic read from start to finish.
This is a standalone romance, as like the two earlier books, but they're all tied together by a wonderfully witty cast of characters in their small town community. I hope the author isn't finished writing in this world, as I'd love to read more about Shay and I hope to get the stories about those three rambunctious brothers at some point. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Lily is once again forced to choose whether to go into hiding or stand her ground. She chooses to stay and live her life. Levi is there to protect her but has to keep it a secret from her and everyone else. His first glimpse of Lily he knew he had to have her. First taste he was in love. As everyone knows secrets have a way of coming out. It's what happened next that made this book very exciting. I really enjoyed reading, Her Renegade Cowboy.
Meh,this was fine but nothing earth shattering.Levi is a strong protective hero but her needs to learn to communicate.Lily is,understandably, dealing with past trauma but her prickliness is of putting at times.
I liked reading this book but I probably won't read again.
I received this from Netgalley for my honest opinion.
Lora Leigh is amazing! This book is a little different from her steamier romances, but it is strong on romance. **vague here to avoid spoilers. I loved Levi and the emotional connection he has with Lilli.. the conflict between the two that comes from their situation is perfect. I enjoyed the cameos from previous characters. I highly recommend this book.
** spoiler alert ** Like the first book in this series, the H isn't really a cowboy. He is working on a ranch as part of his undercover identity with the US Marshals. The book mentions how well he fills out his Wranglers but that's about all regarding the cowboy part. The H is put in this position to protect the h from an escaped convict.
The h is a school teacher who moved back home (Deer Haven) after being assaulted. She helped to put the man in prison but he has escaped. Because the h is too stubborn for her own good, the H is sent to protect her...all while keeping his identity undercover.
There is some drama throughout but it really picks up in the last 15-20% of the book. I enjoyed Levi (the H) but found Lily (h) to be a bit to stubborn and naive at times. The overall story line was entertaining but slow to pick up for me. I believe this is because the h was so stubborn so I wasn't connecting as well with her.
A good read all in all. I am quite interested in the Culpeppers who are frequently mentioned too. And maybe Lily's sister needs a book as well.
This second book in the series, which I promised myself I wouldn't continue reading, was also a disappointment. Insta-love, even more incomprehensible considering the past of the protagonist. I guess it's time to say goodbye to Lora Leigh or wait for her to return to the Breeds.
I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.
This is the third book in the Moving Violations series. The main characters are Lily Donovan and Levi Roberts.
Lily is now an elementary school teacher but, while she was a college student, she was groomed and assaulted by her psychology professor who was a serial rapist building up to be a serial killer. Lily was almost his second murder victim but escaped and testified against him resulting in his prison sentence. Her role was kept quiet. No one but her sister and a cousin's wife knows what happened.
However, now professor Graham Brisbee has escaped from prison and Lily refuses to go into protective custody. Former Army Ranger and current Deputy Marshal Levi Roberts is sent undercover to watch over her and be on the lookout for Brisbee.
The two fall in love and have lots of hot sex almost before they have a conversation. In between the very descriptive sex scenes both feel guilty about keeping secrets from the other. When Levi's identity is outed, Lily naturally feels betrayed and is determined to have nothing further to do with Levi. Meanwhile, Levi is willing to do anything to apologize because Lily is the first woman he has ever wanted to have a long-term relationship with.
Then Brisbee shows up, kidnaps Lily's sister and demands Lily come to him. Levi has to find her before it's too late.
If you like your romantic suspense filled with sex scenes, this is the book for you.
Her Renegade Cowboy by Lora Leigh is the third book in her Moving Violations series. Ms. Leigh ends this series on a high note. The storyline is a familiar one but this author spices it up with lots of action. The characters are well-developed and likable. Lily Donovan is in grave danger and US Marshall Levi Roberts is determined to keep Lily safe. Along the way they fall in love and have a HEA.
I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
A very hot book!! Part mystery too, great storyline. Characters have great descriptions and motives. Fast read- couldn’t stop reading!
3.5 stars, but I'm rounding it up because well.......Lora Leigh. Her alphas and her smut are always on point and right up my alley!
This book is about an undercover US Marshall and a school teacher who after going through something horrific helped put the bastard away, all while under "Jane Doe", so that she could keep it private. At this point only 2 people in her life know she went through it and she wants it to stay that way.
Lily went from feisty, fun, loving, wild to a very feisty, closed off, untrusting. And I didn't blame her one bit, at least in the beginning.
Even though we know from the blurb, I personally forgot that Levi was undercover in the beginning of the book. The way it is written and the way the storyline fell, I totally spaced it. But he is there to keep her safe. But the moment he sees her, he realized that keeping this "just business" might be a lot harder than he would have ever imagined.
There were some parts of the book that didn't go the way I wanted. I wish that Lily had enlisted her cousins for help so that this book could have been more about the suspense of the guy who got out of jail and not about the secrets between these two.
Like I said, minus being frustrated with some of the actions of the book it is still Lora Leigh, it is still awesome writing and it still has awesome sex scenes. I'm really excited for Shay's book, or the Culpepper boys those are going to awesome!
Her Renegade Cowboy by Lora Leigh is the third book in the Moving Violations series. I love Lora Leigh books and this one was terrific. This is Levi and Lilly’s story, and their attraction is off the charts. They both have secrets and have a hard time telling each other their stories. This story is suspenseful, and action packed, while also presenting humor, and a deep romance of a story. I highly recommend this hard to put down page turner of a story.
Thank you Netgalley for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
