I received a free ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was a decent read. I wouldn't say it is my favorite by this author, but it kept me interested,. The plot moved a little slower than I liked, but it had really good character development. The story was interesting with a few twists. Think Gilligan's Island with a twist.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review. It's funny, I can see that the reviews haven't been all that great for this book and I have NO idea why I had such a different experience but I did... The second I started this book, I didn't want to put it down...I was immediately drawn to the characters and to the story line. I didn't want work to interrupt my reading, I just wanted to sit in one spot and keep going until I was done and I knew what happened. Unfortunately, real life sometimes intervenes...it took me much longer than I would have liked...
Reckless Girls is a quick, easy thriller. It does go in some obvious directions, but it has moments where it gets unexpectedly tense, which redeems some of its more outlandish parts. Hawkins wrote the characters well, because they all seem so lost and broken in their own way. In the end, it is a little predictable, but I don’t feel like I wasted my time: there are a lot of twist and turns which makes this a breezy beach read.
Lux has drifted into love with Nico. Enough to follow him to Hawaii. Now, she joins him on his first tourist excursion to take Ama and Brittany to a secluded private island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Can they come back as the same people? Can they even come back at all?
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martins' Press for the opportunity to review the early release of this book in exchange for my review. Initially, I thought this book would be another cozy mystery full of beaches, love triangles, and maybe a dead body. For the first half of the book, that is exactly what it was... then things changed quickly!
I loved how the author let the reader get comfortable in their assumptions of where the story would lead to then, WHAM!! Disaster and Despair! The character arc between the couples was interesting as well. Truly nothing is as it seems. My favorite thing about this book is how the author used the historical articles as long-distance foreshadowing. I honestly didn't pick up on it until 60% into the story!
Literally, the only complaint I have of the whole book is the "woe is me" monologues and attitude Lux had while on the island. They got a little old and tiring after a while, which led me to believe she had little character development. (No Spoilers Here!) All in all, I really liked this story but the ending is what made me LOVE this book. I honestly never would have predicted this story's conclusion. Well Done!!
This was the perfect atmospheric read. This book just had you on edge the whole time even when everything seemed like it should have been perfect.
It had some good twists. Definitely a perfect book to read on the beach if you are a thriller reader
After the death of her mother, Lux follows new boyfriend Nico to Maui, where he has a boat and a plan to sail away. But before they can leave, his boat is damaged, and they can't afford to fix it. But while out at a bar one night, Nico is offered a lot of cash to sail travelers Brittany and Amma to a deserted atoll in the Pacific Ocean, and Lux is invited along. When they arrive, they're surprised to find another boat already there. They meet a wealthy couple with a well-stocked boat and decide to all hang out together.
Now, we all know this won't go well (and it does not go well), and as the group drinks and sleeps around, you begin to find out each one has a secret.
I was looking forward to this one, but I found that as the book went on, there were too many details about their drinking and not enough suspense or thrills. I actually started to not care if any of them made it off the island.
This was my first by this author, and I think I will still try at least one more.
Aah! I love Rachel Hawkins books, and this was no exception! Reckless Girls is an amazing suspense thriller that I couldn’t put down. I have gifted copies to my fellow mystery-loving friends, and can’t wait to read her next book.
Loved this one! I truly will purchase any book Rachel Hawkins writes even under her pseudonym! It was So good right up to the last page!! I did predict one of the twists but that’s ok because it was still satisfying
I really enjoyed this book. There were lots of twists and turns right up until the very end. I felt like the island itself was a character and had such a creepy feeling. Rachel Hawkins is fast becoming an auto author for me. This is a great beach read and I would recommend this book.
Fast, fun and suspenseful. Kept me on my toes! I really enjoyed the secluded island vibes. There were lots of twists and betrayal that kept me guessing. Another great one from Hawkins!
I absolutely really enjoyed this one I have been a fan of Rachel Hawkins ever since I read The Wife Upstairs. It had me at the edge of my seat but I do have to say The Wife Upstairs is still my favorite.
An adventurous story about relationships, friendships, and trust with a side of suspense and mystery. Rachel Hawkins has a way of making slow burns feel quick and interesting. I was not expecting that ending. Thank you to St. Martin's Press for my copy in exchange for an honest review.
Absolutely one of Rachel Hawkin’s best if not THE best! If you love travel, tropical isolated locations but ALSO insane thrill, mystery and suspense; this book has IT ALL.
Didn’t hit the mark for me but love rachel hawkins regardless!!!! Bit of a slower burn and it just felt like the twist happened out of nowhere?!
I think I will read anything that Rachel Hawkins writes. I loved The Wife Upstairs and before that one I loved her Hex Hall series. I also love her stuff under her pen name.
With all that being said, I really did enjoy this book. It kept me captivated the entire time. I haven’t read an adult thriller in a long time. Partly because I found them all so repetitive. In Reckless Girls our characters get stuck on an island, I don’t know if there’s anything more scary than that! Such a perfect setting if you ask me.
One of my favorite things about this book was the flashback scenes. I loved how we were able to slowly piece the puzzle together based on those scenes.
I also want to add that by the end of the book I wasn’t mad at the girls. Does that make me a bad person? I don’t know 😅
This was such a fun and quick read. It took me far too long to pick it up and I’m kicking myself over it. My only complaint is the ending, it was too perfect if that even makes sense.
If you’re looking for something quick and exciting, pick this one up.
I got approved for both an ARC of the e-book and audiobook, which I have gotten about 3% of the way through. I just don’t see myself continuing reading this story after not finishing the author’s previous mystery/thriller book that has a similar cover.
Thanks to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for my gifted copy of Reckless Girls, by Rachel Hawkins. This exciting thriller is out now, and would be perfect for both a tropical setting, or to read during scary season!
Reckless Girls kept me captivated through the end. I loved the twists and turns it took, and how everything was never as it seemed.
I’m looking forward to Hawkins’ next book already!
This was not good and yet I finished it.
It was a struggle for me right from the start. I wasn't a fan of Lux and started reading reviews. The points made in several made me curious, so I pushed through.
The plot is non-existent. It's a lot of words for a stupid reveal. Juvenile characters, no tension, no thrillet aspect, and no actual mystery on the island (which felt like THAT should have definitely delivered for as much as the island history was thrown around.)
Overall, something kept me reading, so that's the reason for a 2 star rating. If I would have DNF'd, it would have been 1 star.
**Huge thanks to the publisher for providing the arc free of charge**
Lux McAllister hasn’t had it easy. Her dad left her mom and started a new family. She had to quit college to care for her ailing mom until she died and left her with no money. Working as a waitress just to get by she meets the charming Nico who is sailing to Maui and invites her to join him. Of course, things don’t go well and now Lux is cleaning hotel rooms to help Nico fix his boat. But, she loves him so she sticks by him.
One night they meet two best friends, Brittany and Amma who want to hire Nico for $50,000 plus pay for his repairs to take them to Meroe Island, isolated in the Pacific because they are looking for an adventure. I was raised on the premise that if something “sounds too good to be true it probably is”, but evidently Nico and Lux didn’t get the message. Nico and Lux agree to the opportunity and off they go with no worries.
When they finally arrive at the “deserted” island there is already another boat anchored there with a very nice couple, Eliza and Jake who provide the group with lots of alcohol and food. And then another stranger, Robbie, suddenly arrives in an old sailboat. At this point, I began to feel something sinister looming. Strange things begin to happen, alliances change and I began to dislike all of the characters immensely. However, I was still captivated by the story.
I gave this book three stars which means I liked it, although I did not love it. I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
An adequate take on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, with a twist. A remote and exotic island, three beautiful women, two rich boyfriends. Who will remain standing?
