Loved this book! Such a great story regarding the days of Agatha Christie and her missing. This mystery was page turning and full of so much detail. Such a delight to read!
I've never read any Agatha Christie books, nor had I heard of her disappearance but the premise of the book was intriguing to me so I was excited to read this one. Unfortunately, this wasn't a hit for me. I found myself bored throughout and I just didn't care that much about the characters. Overall, though, the plot was interesting and I enjoyed the twists but this just wasn't the book for me.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy.
As an Agatha Christie super fan, I will always read anything I can get my hands on about what may have happened when she disappeared in 1926. So I was excited to read The Christie Affair which is the most fictionalized take I’ve read on the story.
It is both a mystery and sort of a romance and told from the perspective of Christie’s husband’s mistress. The plot twist is one I didn’t see coming, the characters were likable, the pacing was quick, and yet the book didn’t grab me and I didn’t find it memorable. It ended up taking me three months to finish reading as I kept putting it down and picking up other books instead.
On the other hand, I read The Mystery of Mrs. Christie a year ago and still remember the plot and ending of that book. That said, I’d still recommend The Christie Affair to any Agatha Christie aficionado.
This book was a combination of wins and losses for me. The story was incredibly fascinating. I was very invested in Agatha and her story. The problem is that the reader is inundated with Nan.
I'm not sure at what point the book lost me, but I think it was somewhere in the middle. From that point on, I had some trouble staying invested.
I stuck with it and by the end I'm really glad that I did. Because even though this book isn't one that I'd probably ever read again, it was well-written--the author has a sort of confidence in her writing that comes across and pulls the reader along.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book. My review will be live, at the link given, on 9/21/22.
I enjoyed the book, and learned a few things I didn't know. I found the book to be a bit slow-moving, and would have preferred a faster pace.
I went into this without even realizing it was about Agatha Christie (I have never read any of her books--sorry). I also had never heard of this disappearance so I immediately googled her and read everything.
The story is told from Nan's (the mistress) point of view which got confusing at times because there were definitely moments that she was not witness too but yet was telling us how it went down. I spent most of the book thinking she was a terrible person making really bad life choices and too be honest I hate infidelity in books so I almost stopped. However, the thing that kept me going was the mystery of it all.
This was a very confusing story and there are so many characters and divergences that I was struggling to put it together, however the author's writing style is very captivating and I was so curious about what happened that I sort of forgot about my dislike for the narrator. I've never had that happen to me before lol.
Loved this take on historical revenge, strength, and love. As a lover of Agatha Christie I loved that it was based loosely on her writing and the people in her life. I'm hooked on fictionalized historical novels these days and this one was engaging, moved well, and made me wonder what if it were the real story. First book from this author but I will definitely look for more!
This book explores the 11 days when Agatha Christie was missing, but from the perspective of her husband's mistress, Nan O'Dea. In this book, after Archie tells Agatha that she wants a divorce she goes missing. I thought that this book had an original premise to see it through Nan's eyes. There were some twists that I didn't expect and found to be rather interesting possibilities of what might have happened during this time.
Thank you to St. Martins Press and NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this book for an honest review.
I'll start off with I had to DNF this book. The synopsis sounds interesting, however I was unable to stay interested.
The beginning had me drawn in. I was really intrigued....but then there was a shift in timeline and I just lost interest and I couldn't force myself to read it anymore.
Now I will say I am not saying I am never going to pick it up. This very well could've been a case of "just not the right time" but I am in no rush to give it another chance.
I love Agatha Christie mysteries and was excited to read about her disappearance and what might have happened to her during that time.
Sadly, this was a DNF for me. Instead of centering around the mystery of Christie's disappearance, this book focused more on the other woman that Agatha Christie's husband was involved with. Christie was more of a side character/storyline.
I would suggest for those looking for a historical fiction book adjacent to Christie's life to pick this up and also to avoid the synopsis before reading as I think it is what led me astray.
As most have heard of Agatha Christie, this story takes you into her life and those around her. The story has historical facts as well as imaginative information.
I couldn’t get into it I think because I just haven’t read enough Agatha Christie. I don’t think the book was bad though.
Fans of Agatha Christie's mysteries, and also books written about her, will enjoy this novel. There have been many stories written about Agatha Christie's mysterious disappearance but this one is unique since it is told from the point of view of Mr. Christie's mistress. This was my first book by this author and I intend to more in the future.
3.5-4 stars
Lovely work of historical fiction based around the disappearance of Agatha Christie in the 1920s. The narrator is the mistress of Agatha’s husband named Nan O’Dea who spends time telling currently happenings along with her, Nan, backstory.
As long as you keep the fact that it’s historical fiction in mind, it’s a good read. It follows the same type of feel of a Christie mystery so it was fun.
Reese normally has a good pick for books and i can trust they will be great, but this one was a no for me. It could just be that at the time i kept constantly putting it down. My feelings are just meh about it
THE CHRISTIE AFFAIR was a moving story about patriarchy, motherhood and the lengths we will go for the people we love. I'll admit, I wasn't a fan of Nan O'Dea at the beginning of the novel and it took me a minute to warm up to her. I've heard about the disappearance of Agatha Christie before, and de Gramont offers a tantalizingly heart-wrenching narrative about what happened during that time, something only Agatha Christie ever really knew. But once I began going deeper into Nan's past and her story, I felt it was more and more compelling. It challenges an unconscious bias in readers that all female protagonists must be likeable for a story to be considered good, but even women like Nan O'Dea deserve their stories to be told. While this was fictional, her story about the loss of her daughter and her mission to reunite with her is reflective of so many women throughout history whose persons were controlled by patriarchal figures and systems. I also thought the plot was arranged and handled very interestingly and comes full circle. There's a special kind of heartache and fury that laces the author's prose that really resonated with me in light of current events. I also enjoyed the dichotomy between Agatha and Nan and how, in a world that would pit them against one another, they still supported each other as women. THE CHRISTIE AFFAIR is a must-read for historical fiction lovers and I really did enjoy every moment of it.
I always love a good historical fiction, especially one taking place in the 1920’s. ‘The Christie Affair’ follows the difficult journey of Agatha Christie and her best friend / husbands mistress Nan O’Dea. This story is filled with heartbreak and (as any novel about Agatha Christie should…) mystery. My only complaint was that at some points it became a little slow because of long background information for the characters. If you are a fan of Agatha Christie or ‘The Great Gatsby’ I think you would enjoy this wonderfully atmospheric read🍾🥂.
I enjoyed this book immensely, it pulled me in making me feel like I was there sharing in the emotions of the "Mrs Christies"
With a very interesting premise, Agatha Christie's husband's mistress is the narrator of this story. While I found both her story and the story of the days Agatha was missing to be interesting, the book felt disjointed to me. I thought some of the plot line to be stretched beyond what might have happened. I liked the murder mystery aspect and I think most readers of historical fiction or Agatha Christie will enjoy this. 3.5 stars rounded up.
For eleven days Agatha Christie was missing. The speculation of where she went in this story was a fun read. Her husband was having an affair and she leaves her home with just a few items. It’s a story of mystery and love told over two timelines. Beautifully written and well thought out characters.
Thank you Netgalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.
