Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher/author for providing me with an ALC in exchange for my honest review.
OMG!!! This book was exactly what I wanted it to be! I loved it. I will make sure to check out other books by this author. When I requested this I was just intrigued by the concept of it and I loved how it turned out. This story had a great plot and if you have read this and enjoyed it, This was so much. It was such a great story. I would say give this one a try. I will continue to follow this author. Way to go to this author for not letting me down.
I highly enjoyed the narrator of the audiobook. Kept me listening.
I really enjoyed Anna K Away. I thought it was a great sequel to Anna K. I loved this retelling and thought that it was a great addition. These characters are great. I really enjoyed Anna.
I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed the first book.
The audiobook was fine and the narrator did a great job but the story wasn’t for me sadly.
I’m sure others will love this way more than I did, but I just thought the story was a bit rough for me. I couldn’t really connect with the characters nor the plot. It was an okay read!
I wasn't the biggest fan of Anna K, but I always like to give a sequel a chance. This book was okay, but it's just not my favorite like the first. A little too chaotic, dragged on, don't love the characters. I'm sure others will love it, though!
This was like jumping back into lifestyles of the rich and famous. Again it seemed a bit unbelievable for the characters to be in their teens but I still enjoyed the story. Packed with all the drama and mischief, it was a fun journey with these ritzy kids.
I found this one super boring which is why it took me so long to read. I enjoyed Anna K when it came out! Im sad I didn't enjoy this one. The story just seemed all over the place and it was hard to keep up with the characters. I think Anna K could have been standalone.
I ADORED Anna K and this one did not disappoint. If you loved the original, the second has a fun bunch of Easter eggs to look forward to. The writing and story was just as adorable as Anna K. I just wish the characters didn’t spend so much time apart.
Since Anna K was based off of Anna Karenina, I was really curious to see how the sequel, Anna K Away, would work. Well, Jenny Lee is an excellent writer because I didn’t want to put this book down. It brings back all of the characters from the first book and it really does feel like you’re catching up with old friends.
Last year, I fell in love with Jenny Lee's YA retelling of Anna Karenina, Anna K. I was so excited when I heard Jenny Lee was writing a sequel to her novel and jumped at the chance to read an advanced reader's copy. The sequel takes place right after the tragic ending of the first novel, and we follow the cast of characters around the world on their various summer vacations. Our main character, Anna, is sent to Korea to recover from her broken heart and a leaked sex tape.
Anna being in Korea was one of my favorite parts of the book. Not only does Jenny Lee write about Korean culture, the traditions, and the mannerisms, she also gives us an inside peek at the K-Pop industry.
I listened to this book on audiobook; it was on the longer side, about 11 hours. Jenna Ushkowitz is an engaging narrator, and it was like chatting with a friend over coffee.
If you are a fan of Gossip Girl, The OC, and other works centered on overprivileged teenagers, read (or listen to) the Anna K series.
Thanks to NetGallery and Macmillan Audio for an audio copy of Anna K Away.
3.5 stars! I enjoyed this duology. If you love YA, I’m sure you’ll love Anna K and Anna K Away. They are perfect to listen as audiobooks, the narration was great. I thought there were a few too many characters at first but the author did a great job of developing them and I caught on quickly. It was fun and addicting. I think I did prefer Anna K a bit more than the sequel but I recommend checking them both out! It gave me all the Gossip Girl / Crazy Rich Asians vibes. These books would make a great TV series!
Thank you to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for providing a free advanced copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
After finishing the first book, I had no desire to read the second. However I keep my commitments and since I received a review copy through Netgalley, I wanted to be able to review it as I had committed. But alas, it was only minutely better than the first. Like half a star better. Honestly I just don’t care about any of the characters, except maybe Dustin. And I don’t get why these books are named after Anna K. She doesn’t seem like the main character. It’s more of an ensemble—an ensemble that doesn’t really matter at all. I guess since it was a modern day Anna Karenina, but seriously Anna K isn’t even talked about the most IMO. Most of it just felt like blah, blah, blah, sex, drugs, and more sex. It was actually draining and boring.
This book is so fun! I especially loved Bea’s story in this book and getting to know her more. I actually loved this more than the first since it was no longer based off of Anna Karenina which I had a hard time connecting in a YA novel.
I received this audiobook from NetGalley in return for a fair review.
After a seriously tumultuous and painful end to her junior year, Anna K has traveled to Seoul with her father for some distance and a new start. Lolly is participating in her beloved theater camp and struggling with some growing feelings for her costar, despite Steven waiting at home. Bea has traveled to LA and finds herself falling in love, for real, for the first time. The characters all come back together and some storylines are resolved, but then others seem to be left hanging, so it seems like there is room for a sequel!
I really enjoyed this book, possibly even more than Anna K. My favorite part was the character growth. Bea, in particular, grew so much in this book! And Anna's evolution was also wonderful to read. I think this book is best for more mature teens and new adults, given the sexual situations and rampant drug use depicted in these books. It's honestly surprising to me that I love these books as much as I do, but between Jenny Lee's characterization and Jenna Ushkowitz's narration, these spoiled rich characters definitely grew on me!
Thanks to @netgalley and @macmillan.audio for an audiobook copy of this book. I enjoyed it. I think I enjoyed it more than I did the first one. While I was reading the first book I spent a lot of time comparing it to the original. For those who are unfamiliar with these books the first one is called Anna K. It’s an updated version of Anna Karenina. The books are set in the present day and are YA. Like I said, with the first book I kept trying to remember the story from when I read it ages ago with Oprah’s Book Club. The second book was its own story and the characters (minus a few that obviously didn’t make it) were developed further.
.
That being said there are parts of both books that are hard to take. The unchecked freedom that these kids have is terrifying and, in my opinion, wrong. Giving a kid unlimited money and few boundaries is a recipe for disaster. I don’t believe the author was advocating for this type of parenting. In fact, the ramifications were decidedly not glamorous.
.
Overall, the book was entertaining and enjoyable. I’d say these are definitely for the older YA spectrum. Some pretty adult themes are depicted.
I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Now while I wasn't a huge fan of the first book, Anna K: A Love Story, I will admit that I was actually pretty excited to dive into Anna K: Away. Which, yeah, sounds super weird while I'm typing this but oh well. I said what I said people.
The reason why I was excited was because I really enjoyed reading Crazy Rich Asians. I'm still not a huge fan of the Gossip Girl vibes but I was willing to make an exception if this turned out better than the previous one. Spoiler alert: I still don't like anyone. Maybe it's the characters, drama, romance, or anything else in between but there's just something that rubs me the wrong way.
I tried, like really tried to find one thing to like and right now - that's the ending. In the end, I just don't think this book was for me but I am glad that I took the risk to dive into it.
Anna K: Away is the sequel I didn’t know I needed. It was a good follow up to a unique retelling and dealt with some much more serious issues.
While the first book felt like rich people being dramatic, this one felt more like them having to deal with the consequences. It’s about grief, moving on, and growing up. And amidst all that it was surprisingly sweet and sentimental.
I also think I was much more invested in the characters in this one. Maybe it was because of the plot and issues they were experiencing, and maybe because I had connected with them in the first book. But here they get wide beyond their years and had some really great character growth.
I have not read Anna Karenina, so I can’t say how close this is to the original (although I know it is drastically different because the ending is the only thing I do know about the original). But I do think this is a unique and engaging retelling that you will enjoy whether or not you know the Tolstoy version.
I really enjoyed this books. It’s a good contemporary novel and I loved the direction it took the characters and stories in. If you read Anna K and liked it, check out the sequel.
A fantastic follow to Anna K. I loved seeing how everyone deals with the death of V. The narrator did a fantastic job of portraying all of the characters. I binged this book in a couple of days.
Didn't love this book as much as the first book, but loved getting to follow up with all the characters. There was a lot of pop culture references which made it really feel like it was happening right now. The narrator did well with voices of characters to separate them.
This story dives right back into the heartbreak Anna K experienced in book 1. I enjoyed the fact we got POVs of characters that were more side characters in the first novel. I am still sitting on how I felt about this read. I did not love it as much as the first. I did enjoy seeing where the characters ended up and how they developed. I just think this one did not have the same heart as the first. I just wanted so much more for Anna and because the story picked up right after the last and the tragic events it did not have enough time for me to get a glimpse into her future. This story was more heavily rooted in her grief and coming to terms with what happened. I gave Anna K Away 3 out of 5 stars.
