An absolute amazing sequel! I listened to the first book in audiobook format as well and absolutely loved it! The sequel was no different! I love the narrator and not to mention the story in general! Fingers crossed for another book with these amazing characters!
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an audio arc of this book, all opinions expressed here are my own.
Anna K Away by Jenny Lee is the sequel to Anna K, a YA modern retelling of Anna Karenina.
While I felt like the first book definitely managed this, the sequel (which picks up where the first left off) seems a fluffier read, that’s unrelated to the original. It is lighter, faster paced and fun. I enjoyed this book and think it would make a perfect beach read. The narrator, Jenna Ushkowitz was an excellent choice and fits with the style of book well.
Recommend for fans of Crazy Rich Asians and The Thousandth Floor trilogy. This was a fun 3.5 star read.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers as well as LibroFM for allowing me to read this book early! If you were a fan of the first book, I think you'll love this one! In this follow up to Anna K: A Love Story, we see what happens to the whole cast of characters the summer following the end of the first book. Anna goes to Korea and meets a KPop star, Beatrice goes to LA, and many other adventures are had. I actually enjoyed this book more than the first, perhaps because I already know the characters or because its shorter but either way it was good!
I love the Anna K series but I think I would've liked more of Anna. I seriously love the narrator. She needs to read all the audiobooks.
I don't want to give a synopsis for this one because if you haven't already read Anna K, it will give too much away. The best way to describe this series is a Gossip Girl meets Crazy Rich Asians modern retelling of Anna Karenina. Anna K Away picks up right where Anna K left off and it sucked me in right away.
This book felt less slow than the original and from the first moment it was filled with drama. This is one example where I think I actually enjoyed book two more than book one! While there was a lot going on, this book did not feel as heavy as book one. I enjoyed getting to know the characters better in this one too! Because they were all apart for the summer and had their own storylines, I could really get to know each character as an individual and it made it easier to keep track of the different characters.
The audiobook was phenomenal. I could listen to Jenna Ushkowitz all day!
The Sequel to Anna K, picks up right where the first book ends. The retelling of Anna Karenina set in present time presents a fun and fresh story that at times feels a little bit like gossip girl. I do not recommend starting at this point, this is a true connected series and you will likely be lost without reading the first book.
This book is so much fun. I am not a YA fan, but for some reason Jenny Lee writing is such a joy and l love reading about rich people problems. I was able to listen to an advanced audio copy and the narrator Jenna Ushkowitz from Glee is such a delight. She really nailed the essence of what the author was trying to accomplish. It came off very light without sounding too trite.
If you looking for a fun summer read get this and Anna K, and I think you we be delighted.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an Advanced Reader’s Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I wouldn’t say you need to read the first book, Anna K. However, a lot is referenced and it does take off after, so it would only help fall in love with the characters. I personally would.
I loved Anna K, and think this was a solid sequel. It’s always one of those “does the sequel live up to the original” kind of things. I did like how they were all apart for the majority of the time. It was a bold strategy since they all worked so well together, but it really made me get to know each character on a different level and kind of make my own decisions about them as individuals.
What I think is best about Jenny Lee’s writing is how we get the happy and sad, in such normal ways. Sometimes when there’s grief, it’s just so over the top, it takes away from the weight of it. Lee doesn’t shy away from the topics, and as a reader, I am thankful.
Overall, I really enjoyed it! I enjoyed Anna K and Anna K Away in their own special way! Thank you MacMillan Audio and Libro.fm for the gifted copy. Anna K Away is out now!
Anna K Away picks up where Anna K left off -- I highly recommend reading that one first (just be sure not to read the Anna K Away synopsis ahead of time as it's got spoilers for the first book in the series).
I found Anna K Away to be frothier than Anna K -- lighter on details, lighter on drama and tragedy. Anna is in Seoul, Lolly is at theater camp, and Bea is in LA; the narrative bounces between the three. While Steven, Kimmie, and Dustin make appearances, I felt the book focuses more on the other three (perhaps because they're outside NYC?). Though, personally, I'd have liked even more of Lolly, given how engaging and juicy her storyline was in this installment.
And that's really my hope for Anna K Away - that it's just one book in a series of at least three, not (as @cindyheartsbooks put it) an extended epilogue of Anna K. It felt to me like author Jenny Lee was moving pieces around to set things up for the third book -- fingers crossed for that!
Jenna Ushkowitz is again a great narrator; I'm glad to have listened to this book.
This book is definitely a Gossip Girl meets Crazy Rich Asians. Had I read it as a teenager, I would have loved this book so much; however, as an adult I find the characters fall a bit flat for me, and the problems a bit superficial. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the book. It was just good as a distraction and not much more than a fluff read.
I LOVE this audiobook. Jenna Ushkowitz has perfect delivery and diction, which I'm sure she gains from her TV and theater background. Jenna Ushkowitz is by far one of my favorite book narrators for this reason.
The actual book, I'm not as sold on. I think it dragged on, was boring in places, and was self fulfilling in others. I think it was a satisfying sequel, but given that I didn't love the first ANNA K book, I'm not surprised that this one felt very meh to me as well. I will say I thought it was better than the first one! But that doesn't really take much for me. The narration, however, was lovely :)
I loved Anna K and could not wait to read this sequel. Though I did enjoy this one, I don't think I liked it quite as much as the first. The narrator did a wonderful job on the audiobook. I was invested in the characters and couldn't wait how everything turned out and found this to be a satisfying conclusion to the first book. I will definitely be reading more of this author in the future.
Pros: After reading the first book in this series, which was based on Anna Karenina, I was interested to read this sequel, which isn’t based on another book. This was a fun YA book—very much the genre of what the Bad on Paper Podcast would categorize as “rich unsupervised teenagers.” Also, I listened to this on audiobook and thought Jenna Ushkowitz (Glee) was a great narrator.
Cons: I think I’m not a huge YA fan. This book is described as Gossip Girl meets Crazy Rich Asians, and I wish it were a little more CRA than GG.
I’d round up to 3.5 stars if half stars were allowed.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this book!
