This book was a DNF for me. I did not like the concept of the "Article writing within the story" The premise was interesting but I couldn't get past the way the book format was written.
I am sorry for the inconvenience but I don’t have the time to read this anymore and have lost interest in the concept. I believe that it would benefit your book more if I did not skim your book and write a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.
THE PLOT is a story about ... a plot.
Sorry, I couldn't resist writing that. Anyway, this book is definitely interesting and it will make readers wonder about what goes on in the classes teaching "creative writing."
Exactly how creative are the professors who "teach" this subject to others?
It is a story about a teacher who steals the manuscript of one of his students after he realizes that student has died. What exactly are the ethics in a situation like that.
If the student's manuscript was such a surefire success, surely it is a book that deserves to be published.
I loved the many twists and the angst of the literary thief. Is he a good person? What should he have done with it?
This is a book that is perfect for Book Clubs as I am sure that every reader will have their own opinions on the plot.
I rate THE PLOT as 4 out of 5 Stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
I have no idea how I missed this review, but I'm truly sorry.
The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz was a wonderful, enjoyable story.
Extremely well written. And definitely a page-turner. Jean Hanff Korelitz does the best job at creating the scene and bringing the thrill right along with it.
The narrator did such a great job at setting scene and bringing these characters to life.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Clever and entertaining. It was slightly predictable, but not disappointingly so. The narrator did a great job!
It was honestly the narrator that put me off of this book. The tone of his voice didn’t seem to convey the mystery and suspense this book deserved. I wish I would have read the written version.
It took me some time to get into this book. About halfway it really picked up steam and it finished far stronger than it started.
Pretty much all the characters were unlikeable, but that doesn't bother me and it works for this book. I did like being able to crawl into Jacob's head when he was accused of plagarism and begins to spiral out of control. So many books have a similar plot, but it seems Jacob somehow extracted the entire storyline from Evan and ran with it.
There's a big twist which I probably should have seen coming but didn't.
This is one of those didn't love, didn't hate books. Second half definitely stronger.
A great deal of this book appealed to me, and I found myself enjoying it immensely. It's well written, and I really enjoyed the humorous undercurrent of the publishing industry, creative writing classes, and book promotion. As a native New Yorker, I thought the city environment was fantastic. And then, there is always that little "but"... Truthfully, I was somewhat disheartened by this. Although I had guessed the twist fairly early on, I kept hopeful that it would be something else. I kept waiting for something unexpected to happen towards the end. Nonetheless, that did not occur. So, while I would say that this book kept my attention throughout, I was ultimately left feeling very disappointed. Darn. All things considered, a perfect score of five stars would have been awarded if the situation had been different.
The Plot started so strong with a great story within a story premise. I was drawn into the writing, the setting, and the characters. However, the strong start fizzled and I felt the last third of the box left too many questions unanswered and rushed the conclusion.
I will definitely try other reads by this author though in the future because this book has such good bones.
This is a quality contemporary mystery that had me racing to the end. I’m a sucker for a book about books or publishing etc. so when I heard about this one, I knew I had to read it. At first it took a bit to get into because the main character is quite down on his luck and it felt a little cliché with everything going on (which is why I couldn’t give this a solid 5 stars). Once he gets into the thick of the mystery, the book holds on and doesn’t ease up until the twist that I thought was somewhat predictable but shocking nonetheless. I was fortunate to be given Korelitz’s next book as an ARC and can’t wait to dive in.
Once this story took off I just couldn’t stop I had to find out what was happening next. I must say it did take time to build up it was so worth the wait in the end. This book was nothing that I thought it was going to be and I’m so happy for that! It builds at a slower pace but it gives you layers revealing secrets that make you want to keep reading and wanting more. I thought this book was addictive, unexpected and a wonderful mystery!
I received an advanced digital copy of this audiobook. Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley.com to the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The Plot lives up to all the hype I have heard and seen online. Excellently written and crafted storytelling.
HIghly recommended.
5 out of 5 stars.
I struggled through the first 30% at a crawl. Besides not introducing anything more than I had learned in the book’s description, Jake’s narrative drove me batty. It was all mile-long paragraphs, infinite serial lists, and the most excessive parenthesis usage I’ve encountered. I soon realized this writing style was a ploy to show how shallow and annoying was Jake’s character. And, yes, I found Jake terribly annoying. However, it was a chore to get through this part.
Interestingly, each time the narrative would flip to the novel excerpt, I was engaged and couldn’t wait to find out more. But like I said earlier, you only get a few pages of this every so often. This alone proved the quality of the author’s writing to me. This and the positive reviews for the book kept me reading.
It was unfortunate that I spotted the twist early in the book. And I do mean early. This wasn't a complete let down though, I was still curious about how the details would play out.
This book was liked so well by so many other readers. I went into this thinking the plot was intriguing and had high hopes, but the fact that the answer to th mystery is so extremely predictable, it made reading the book kind of boring.
I spent 90% of this thinking "I don't think this constitutes theft. I don't think this constitutes plagiarism. I don't think this is actually a moral conundrum that could destroy someone's entire life so much as an ethical grey area."
I really enjoyed listening to this. It was kind of confusing differentiating between the story of Crib and reality, I kept overlaying the two and without spoiling anything, I had to stop the story, rename all the important characters to know who did what really.
Confession: I did see the ending coming, but it was still super good and I really enjoyed it.
The narrator, Kirby Heyborne, was good; he has a compelling voice and doesn't do women's voices offensively like many male narrators.
I received a copy of this audiobook for free from NetGalley and Macmillan Audio in exchange for an honest, voluntary review.
The Plot was a fast paced book and could not wait to see where it was going. It was interesting to see who was going after the professor after he had the book published.
Thank you to NetGalley for proving me with a copy of The Plot, but I just don't think it was the book for me at this time. DNF at 34%. I thought about it over the weekend and I just wasn't enjoying this book at all. It was very slow and dry and it just wasn't holding my attention. I've heard great things about this and the premise was so intriguing, but it just wasn't working for me. Maybe I'll try again sometime.
Couldn't get into this one — i tried so many times! And the blurbs on the back of the book are from some of my favorite writers so I just kind of feel bummed this one wasn't for me. Might still try again in the future but for now I'm kind of giving it up.
Oh my god, this was just what I was looking for. This was one of my most eagerly awaited thrillers of the year, and it did not disappoint. I listened to this on audio thanks to Macmillan Audio and finished it in ONE SITTING. I don't think that's ever happened to me before; I've never finished a 10-hour audiobook in one sitting, but I was completely absorbed in this story and needed to know where it was going.
This narrative concerns Jacob, a professor who once produced a very popular book. But he's been attempting to create book after book without success since then. While teaching his creative writing class, he meets Evan Parker, a conceited jerk who believes he has an idea for a book plot that will sell millions of copies and be made into a movie, etc. Despite being aggravating as fuck, Jacob realizes he's a really good writer, and he believes the narrative is a brilliant concept. Years pass and he hasn't heard anything about the book's publication until he learns of Evan's death. He doesn't want the book's brilliant plot to go to waste, so he resolves to write it himself. However, someone is aware of what he done and is threatening him.
This novel was really well-written, fast-paced, and I thoroughly loved reading from Jacob's point of view. I thought him to be quite engaging and fascinating, and I enjoy reading biographies of authors. I also enjoy that we get chapters from the book he was writing, allowing us to witness the storyline unfold for ourselves, and it's a fantastic story inside a fantastic story. And then there was the conclusion!!!! I'll confess that there was one twist at the end that I had suspected for the whole of the book, but that very final epilogue chapter!!!!!!!!!! I was like, "Waaaaaaaat, bitch?" It was fantastic. So it gets 5 stars because, despite the fact that I foresaw one of the surprises, I was still surprised.
While I didn't end up getting to listen to the audio version, I read the print book. It was a bit of a slow burn but I made it through and enjoyed the suspense.
