Oh wow it will take me awhile to come off the high of this book. B.A. Paris has done a great job with this book and I was captivated from the very beginning. Every time I think I knew who did it something would change. I highly recommend this book and I suggest going into it blind. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I love a good psychological thriller and BA Paris doesn’t disappoint!!
Alice and Leo move into a close-knit gated community called, The Circle. Alice wants to get friendly with her new neighbors, so she decides to invite them all over for drinks. What started out as a house-warming of sorts, unleashes The Circle secret of a horrifying murder that took place in Alice’s new home. This discovery sends Alice on a mission to find out what really happened to Nina, a therapist and previous owner!! Alice becomes obsessed with the search. Will she be able to solve the murder or will well-kept secrets keep her in the dark?
I both listened and read this book. I loved the audiobook version because the dual narration kept me connected until the very end, and I thought that both Olivia Dowd and Thomas Judd’s reading style brought the story to life.
If you enjoy psychological thrillers or have been wanting to try this genre, this is a great book full of twist and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end!
Behind Closed Doors was one of my favorite reads of 2020 and I recommend it to everyone so when I saw they had a new book coming out I couldn’t wait to read it. Unfortunately, it just didn’t live up to the hype I had in my mind.
Alice and Leo move in to an exclusive gated community called “the circle” and she thought everything was going to be amazing after finally being able to live together after a long distance relationship. As Alice starts to get to know the other families in the community she realizes that there is a big secret about her house and about everyone else in the circle. Alice falls deeper and deeper in to the rabbit hole and realizes things aren’t always as they seem.
Overall, this was a good story, just not as fast paced and exciting as Behind Closed Doors. I still enjoyed listening to it on audiobook and am definitely looking forward to more books by this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and McMillian audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
Alice and Leo decide to take their long distance relationship to the next level and move in together. They end up in a close knit community called The Circle. Alice, wanting to fit in, invites all the neighbors over for drinks but later realizes one of them is suspicious. She also finds out secrets about The Circle.
I thought this was an entertaining read. I was disappointed to find that I knew the "bad guy" early on, pretty much when the person appeared, although I didn't understand the motivation, which was a surprise. If you enjoy domestic thrillers and are able to just go along for the ride, this will be an enjoyable read for you. I listened to this on audio and found that version to be well done.
Thanks to NetGalley and St Martin's Press for the free audiobook of this title in exchange for my honest review.
This book proves you can enjoy books by an author if you've previously not enjoyed another one of their titles. I really was worried about whether I'd like this book by B.A. Paris, given my dislike for The Dilemma. But I was proven wrong. This book keeps you guessing, and I really didn't see the ending coming. Every time there's a mention of the neighborhood being called "The Circle," I kept thinking of the Netflix TV show, where you're not quite sure who to trust. That's a very similar perspective here in this neighborhood. I'm glad I gave this novel a chance, as I really enjoyed it as a lover of thrillers.
This is a compelling thriller that kept me guessing. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Olivia Dowd. She does a great job as our protagonist Alice and contributes to the suspense in the story.
With that being said, this will likely be the last time I read one of BA Paris' novels (this is my fourth). Her stories are decent but her main characters are consistently annoying people who make terrible choices and whine about the consequences.
Alice has recently moved into a newly renovated house in a gated community with her boyfriend. After moving in, she learns a murder was committed in the home and that's why they got a good deal. She then becomes obsessed with the crime, the dead woman, and trying to clear the name of the assumed murderer. I was interested in the murder and finding out what happened. I didn't care too much for Alice. She was clueless, stubborn, and self-sabotaging. There were a lot of minor characters to keep track of.
I'd recommend this for fans of Paris' previous novels.
The narrators for book, Olivia Dowd and Thomas Judd were wonderful. So many times, one narrator is used to create multiple voices, and the listener can be confused as to the character speaking. With the two narrators, this is not an issue.
For me, this was a perfect book for which to listen. I could easily picture the neighborhood where the story takes place. There were a few places where I was a bit confused sheen background information was provided in a separate chapter. It I didn’t take away from the story, and by the time I got to the end, all of the pieces fell into place.
Psychological thrillers are one of my favorite books. Paris did a great job of providing a psychological thread throughout the book. I have to say, this is one that caught me totally by surprise. I did not see the ending at all.
Highly recommended.
Not all suburban life is wonderful. The life of Alice and Leo takes a drastic turn when Alice learns that the previous owner of her home, Nina, a therapist was killed in their home.
An obsession begins in Alice to find out who really killed Nina. Author, B.A. Paris has written several good books, but I found this book to be slow in pace and Alice to be shallow in intellect. The ending provides some twist but overall this book was not a favorite. Thank you Netgalley and HQ Australia for an early audio version of this book. The comments and review are my honest opinion.
This was not B.A. Paris’ best book. The main protagonist was infuriatingly annoying and the plot transparent. However, it was an entertaining read.
Something happened at #6 in The Circle, a private community of homes, so the house was empty for a year prior to it finally being SOLD to Leo and Alice for a price that couldn't be beat. When Alice realizes why the house had been empty and cheap, she becomes obsessed with finding out what happened the night Nina, the therapist who occupied the home before them, was murdered. This book will keep you on your toes, suspecting anything and everyone, and at first, I was so interested as the setting and plot was intriguing- I mean an exclusive community in London? It can't get better than that! However, none of the characters in this book were likable, and Alice's questionable decisions made this book not as enjoyable.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing me with an arc in return for an honest review!
When Alice and Leo move into The Circle, an expensive gated community in London, Alice soon learns that the woman who had lived there before them was murdered. Alice, drawn to the case because of a connection between her own deceased sister and the murdered woman, quickly finds out that everything is not as it seems in this exclusive community. Everyone has secrets, and someone is willing to kill to keep theirs safe.
I listened to this book SO fast. I was convinced (just like Alice) that everyone she met was certainly the killer. This is the kind of mystery I love to read--a main character who I can root for and side characters who I both like, but also suspect of being terrible, murderous people.
The narrator does a great job in this book. It was easy to listen to over just a couple of days, and the narration added to the story in the very best way.
B. A. Paris does not disappoint again! Always a winner in my book. This was a book I could not put down even when I thought my racing heart would jump out of my chest. I listened to the audiobook from NetGalley and the narrator did an excellent job with narration.
(audiobook) Alice and her partner buy a house in The Circle, a tight-knit neighborhood that recently lost one of their own in a domestic murder. As Alice navigates new friendships with her neighbors, she becomes obsessed with discovering what really happened in her house on that tragic day.
I thoroughly enjoyed this twisty thriller. I don't think it's for everyone, but I love a story that delves into the social dynamics of a group and pushes how far the bonds of friendship will stretch. I caught on to who the killer was relatively quickly, but not the how or why and loved how the ending came together. It's a fun one!
Thanks NetGalley for the advance copy!
The first few chapters of this book felt a bit slow to me, but I kept going because the I found the main character to be interesting. She has had a tragic past and she is now making a big change in her life, moving with her boyfriend so they can spend more time together. Alice's personality, self-doubt, internal struggles really come through and even when I was just delving into the book, Alice was enough to keep me coming back to the book. Then came the actual move and the first revelations and the book goes from interesting to a page turner I kept coming back to in my breaks from work. I of course kept thinking I had it all figured out, yet I didn't, not the main mystery nor other reveals that happen throughout. The clues are all there, and they don't feel misleading in hindsight, it's all very tight and would make a fantastic movie. My favorite part was how Alice's personality played into how things turned out. Very well done.
The audio narration is very good, with the narrator's accent enhancing the mood and sense of place of the story. The narrator's speech was a bit slow with long pauses between sentences, but and 1.25x it worked well.
I received an audioARC in exchange for an honest review.
I devoured this audio! Thanks to Netgalley for letting me listen to it early. It was my first by the author but will most definitely not be my last.
The narrator was perfect and the storyline kept me hooked from beginning to end. While I saw some things coming I was shocked on how it was all connected.
Definitely read this for a quick addictive domestic thriller !
Alice and Leo finally decide to move in together, she likes the country and Leo's work requires access to the big city of London. Leo finds a gated housing community that seems to be the best of both worlds satisfying Alice's need for the bucolic and Leo's need for the cosmopolitan. A situation like this seems just too good to be true, and it is especially once Alice finds out more about the house and its previous occupants.
The Therapist is a solid domestic thriller, I enjoyed the book all the way through to the very end even though the ending fell a bit flat for me. With the aid of Paris's prose, Olivia Dowd's narration was just stellar she had me totally entranced by the story and allowed the listener to experience of Alice's emotions. I recommend listening to the audio for a really enjoyable experience.
I usually love B.A. Paris books,; this is the first one I've done as an audiobook. I think this was a slow burn book but it dragged for me. The twists were predictable and came far too late. I liked the eerieness if The Circle but I couldn't stand Alice and that tainted everything.
I received an ARC of the audiobook from Netgalley and Dreamscape Media in exchange for an honest review. After having a long distance relationship, Alice and Leo decide to move in together, and buy a home in a small community known as The Circle. Alice is trying to get to know her neighbors, but it’s hard when Leo isn’t wanting to socialize much with them. They finally have a gathering in their home, and shortly after Alice discovers one of the partygoers wasn’t the neighbor she thought he was, and no one knows who he was. As she tries to find out who the stranger is, she discovers more secrets hidden by the people in her community, and starts to wonder just how safe she feels living in her new home.
This one hooked me in fast. It seems like such a simple premise, but the mysteries keep adding up. I couldn’t put it down! Paris weaves a complicated tale with a twist at the end I never expected. I would recommend this to any fan of psychological thrillers.
This was a fun listen even though it was a little predictable. I enjoyed the characters and the who-dun-it aspect of the book. The narrator was very good and had a very pleasant voice.
BA Paris is a must-read author for me. I always FLY through her books, and The Therapist is no exception. I finished it in a day. This wasn’t her best book in my opinion, but still great. It was sufficiently creepy but didn't have enough of a mystery for me.
