Kerrigan Byrne is such an excellent writer of dark historical romances. I absolutely adored the hero and heroine of this novel, and I LOVE a virgin hero. Byrne's stories are well-crafted and absorbing, and I enjoyed every minute of this one! Felicity and Gabriel gave me butterflies, and I can't wait to read what Byrne writes next.
Tempting Fate is the 4th book in the Goode girl serie; You should read the previous book before reading this one, because Gabriel/Gareth met Felicity Goode in the previous book and readers could already notice the fondness fro Gabriel to Felicity. Felicity is a shy girl with fears, but she has really a big heart. She has inherited all the possession of his father if she marry in the year with someone higher as a viscount. Unfortunately this heritage have come with the need to go to the Society. Something difficult for such a shy girl who had planned to live as a adventurous spinster with her twin sister Mercy. Alas Mercy had fallen in love and marry Raphaël Savageau (in the previous book) and fly away becase Raphël was a leader of a gang "les Faunes" and had to simulate his death to free himself. Same thing for his older brother, Gabriel. Gabriel has always fight as the beast he think he is and was defigurated. During one year he has endured facial chirugie to change his identity. He was touched by the gentelness, the innocence of Felicity and view her as a "goddess". Unfortunately Felicity is threated and need someone to protect her. She litteraly falls on Gabriel/Gareth and hire him. Feelings were already in place by Gabriel, the book is more about the developement on the feeling for Felicity and the acceptance of Gabriel that the time of his black soul is behind him.
I must say that if I hadn't read the previoous book, I'm not sure i will have really enjoyed this book. The plot is quite obvious, but I really appreciate Mercy story and was happy to find her back.
I did not expect that..
Tempting Fate Review (Spoilers)
Four stars
Tempting Fate is Felicity Goode’s story. As the only unmarried Goode sister, Felicity is left all of her parents money and estate after they pass away. However she is required to marry into the aristocracy or she will lose everything that was left to her and some of the freedom she had during mourning. All the while someone is out to get her. So in order to protect herself she hires Garett Severand AKA Gabriel Sauvageau!
Gabriel received a reconstruction surgery (the favor that Titus Conleth owed him) and has been watching Felicity from afar. Felicity believes that Gabriel died after saving her life. Gabriel/ Gareth become Felicity’s bodyguard and all the while they are falling for each other. Felicity doesn’t know that Gareth is Gabriel.
I enjoyed this story but she definitely took Gabriel’s character in a different direction than what I thought she would. He’s still strong and brooding but I thought with his new face he would really step into the hero/rogue roll and he did not. It was a slow creep into role of the hero and even then it left me wanting more from him. I was surprised that she had made him a virgin. I can totally appreciate a role reversal where the male lead is the “innocent” one, however the characters having great sex the first time only makes sense to me if the other character is experienced. These two are both virgins so I’m just not buying that they had good sex the first go. Other than that I have no other complaints. The book has a bit of a twist at the end, that I won’t ruin, that I think allows for more books in the series so I’m looking forward to seeing what she does with that.
Particularly love the book! The series is like divulging a secret little by little, and I thought this will be the last book of 4 sisters stories, but actually there are more.
The story itself is similar to Beauty and the Beast, but instead a beast that instantly became a prince, this one stays beast but with a change of heart. A relationship that change both ways, and they really compliment each other.
Love the cover and blurb! My first in this series but easily a stand alone! I’d read them in order though since all reading this one did was make me wish I’d started at the beginning!
What did I like? I thought the play on words with Felicity being a Goode girl such a cute story! Gabriel having facial scars and missing nose made me think this was a kind of beauty and the beast scene. The two had such chemistry in the bodice ripper and I found the book highly entertaining!
Would I recommend or buy? Like I said... I wish I had started at book one and presently this is on Kindle Unlimited so really a no brained. Romance lovers will love this book! Five stars!
I received a complimentary copy to read and voluntarily left a review!
Kerrigan Byrne can do no wrong. Always enjoy her books and this one is no exception.
This is a part of the Goode girl series. This story is about Felicity and Gabriel. This story is probably the most romantic of all in this series and my favorite.
I really enjoyed this introduction into this world and I just couldn’t get enough of it. I just so thoroughly enjoyed meeting these new characters and getting to go on their journey. I will most definitely be reading more wonderful books from this author.
A beauty and the beast vibe story with the lovely Felicity that we got to met in the previous books in the series and Gabriel, a wounded soul that falls in love with her from a distance and wants nothing more than to protect her from anyone that will harm her.
I loved how she’s the sunshine ray to his darker parts and how their love grows so much with each moment spend together. They are so different in so many ways, truly opposite attracts characters but their love is stronger and in true Kerrigan Byrne style, this story is full of interesting twists and suspense with a dash of spiced romance moments.
I loved this series.
The “Goode” family name has been through some hard times in these past few books. This book is Felicity’s story. .
Although all Gabriel knows is violence and pain, his and Felicity’s love story is the tenderest, most romantic in the Good Girls series.
These two are opposites in many, many ways, and yet they are perfect for each other. She sees his beauty, he makes her feel strong, and I loved witnessing these two find their happily ever after.
This is probably my favorite book in the series,

I’ve waited for Felicity and Gabriel’s story ever since I read Dancing with Danger and what a treat it is. I adore both their characters and their love story is definitely one for the ages. Romantic and soulful, it touched my heart. My only complaint about this book is Mercy and Raphael’s arc in this book. It didn’t make sense and the explanation about their ending seemed rushed.
I recommend this book as part of the series rather than a stand alone as you will be able to appreciate the storyline and characters when you read this in continuation of the series. You really don’t want to miss out on the previous books especially Mercy and Raphael’s book, “Dancing with Danger”.
I received this ARC from NetGalley and the publisher for an honest review*
This author always has stellar writing and a great storyline that keeps you pulled into the end. I'm really enjoying this entire series!
4 out of 5 wine glasses.
I thoroughly enjoyed Felicity and Gabriel's story and even though this HEA has been building up since the beginning of series, I think this book moved a bit too quickly and could have used a little more development and I'll never complain about a Kerrigan Byrne book being too long, so I would've liked 50-100 pages more. However, since I was curious as to how the series would continue since all of the sisters have found their HEA's, I'm super stoked at how the author worked that out and can't wait to read the following books!
Thanks to the publisher, Netgalley and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book in the Goode Girls series and the one I was looking forward to the most. Out of all the sisters, Felicity was the one whose story I wanted to know. She is the quiet, anxious sister who the whole family tries to protect, even as they fail to recognise her inner strength. That type of heroine is my jam.
And the hero, Gabriel, who saves her and then appoints himself as her bodyguard is scarred but redeemable - totally swoonworthy.
If you enjoyed the series then you should definitely read this one, but even if you don't know the other books, this is a good one to read.
The author treats sensitive topics with compassion and empathy and I always enjoy the contrast of dark and light that she has in her novels.
The book closes out with a possible set-up of future novels about extended family ... if that happens I am totally on board.

It is always an author's prerogative to change her mind. Sometimes her characters just don't behave in the way they should, much like unruly children. A few books ago, I really thought that Felicity was destined for her HEA with the mysterious rich American, Elijah Wolfe, who is the owner of the gold mine that made Sir Carlton Morley (A Dark and Stormy Knight - Victorian Rebels Series) wealthy. Now she is destined for a HEA with the brooding, scared, hulk of Gabriel Sauvageau who does not disappoint as the dark hero that Kerrigan Byrne so loves to redeem. There are quite a few surprises in this book, OMG the reveal!, along with a hot romance and mystery/suspense that just makes it one of the best books in the series.
Gabriel Sauvageau would give is life for Felicity Goode and he almost did. When he and his brother Raphael Sauvageau decided to leave their gangster life behind, Raphael eloped with Mercy Goode and it was assumed by everyone that Gabriel had died defending Felicity. Not so. Dr. Titus Conleigh saved his life and transformed his ruined face. He was supposed to vanish to the New World, but instead has been shadowing Felicity for over a year. He just can't bring himself to leave, especially when her parents die and she is the subject of an attack.
Due to the stipulations in her father's will, Felicity Goode must marry a nobleman or lose her family fortune. She is shy, lost in her romance novels and subject to fainting at the sight of blood. When the ton suitors descend and she is assaulted, she decides she needs a bodyguard and Gareth Saverand, Gabriel Sauvageau's new identity, is just the man she needs. Felicity finds that she needs Gabriel for more than protection and finding out who is behind the attacks is just the beginning.
I love this book because of the hero- Gabriel. KB excels in writing tortured anti-heroes who find redemption through the love of a good woman. My quibble with this book (and the previous books in the series) is the length. The mystery behind the threat on Felicity’s life wasn’t given enough time to unravel itself that it seems a bit rushed and appeared to be the author’s way of introducing more characters as leads in future books. Having said this, I am still reading the next books as I am a major fan of KB’s writing.
"Tempting Fate" feels like the story the Goode Girls series has been leading to, and in my opinion, it's the best of the series so far! I have been looking forward to reading Felicity and Gabriel's love story, and Kerrigan Byrne did not disappoint. I would recommend reading this series in order (this title is the fourth). The backstory is important to experiencing the full impact of the journey and understanding the characters and relationships of each of Felicity's sisters (and Gabriel's brother) will give a greater appreciation to the unfolding of Felicity and Gabriel's relationship.
Byrne packs in the feelings here, especially with Gabriel as a less typical romantic lead in a historical. I don't want to share too much, because his growth is such an important part of the romance. I also appreciate the representation of mental health challenges in a historical context and the understanding with which Felicity's panic was portrayed.
"Tempting Fate" introduces the opportunity for more stories in the series, and I can't wait to see what comes next!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Tempting Fate by Kerrigan Byrne is book 4 in the Goode Girls Series. This is the story of Gabriel Sauvageau and Felicity Goode. Felicity is a shy girl that stutters when she is with strangers. Gabriel is a scared man inside and out who lives in the dark side of town. But when he sees Felicity he see the light she has and although he knows she can't be for him he works to protect her. Felicity becomes in danger with her emotions and with her life when she becomes a heiress. I cannot recommend Ms. Byrne's writing enough. I love her books and this one did not let me down..loved it.

Rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars
Steam: 🌶🌶/5 stars (perfect amount of attraction between the two love interests!)
I really enjoyed this book! I’m a sucker for bodyguard romances especially in historical romances! This one was so well done. Both these characters complement each other well and I loved the dialogue between them!! This book was fast paced and kept me interested throughout! 4 stars as some plot points could have been flushed out a bit more, but other than that I really enjoyed this book!
This is the 4th book in this series, however my first book I’ve read. It didn’t leave me confused or anything and this reads as a good stand alone. In the future I plan on reading more by this author!
As the previous books in the series, this was so short, so straight to the point, and kinda rushed. I felt that the characters needed more depth and needed a backstory. Their romance needed a little development as well. The ending was kinda rushed that I was like wait what? Who are you? So who is dangerous to whom and who was trying to hurt whom? I don’t know, it wasn’t bad. I’m just not loving this series as her previous one I think.
I've been reading Regency Romance a lot and I was amazed at the great chemistry between the two main characters. The plot didn't matter me at all considering the dialogues and descriptions.
.
Gabriel and Felicity are more than just opposite, they are two extremes so far apart that they are perfect for each other. They both lack the confidence to trust another person the difficulty of approaching others, with such different characters and with opposite contexts both find in the other a refuge and strength to go out into the outside world.
.
The story flows fast and it is almost impossible to detach you from it, but if it is a good idea to read the previous books and for the small glimpse of the characters, I can assure you that it is worth it.
