I am pretty sure that I fell in love Gabriel Sauvageau from the start. His Beast to Felicity Goode’s Beauty was so well written by Kerrigan Byrne. My heart broke for how hard Gabriel pined for Felicity and still cared for her in his protective ways.
I may love Gabriel tons but Felicity has such amazing inner strength. The detail of how Kerrigan reflected such understated confidence in spite of her “introvertness” was so well done. I wanted to give her a hug and tell her I’d be her bestie. I love this couple and the deep, foundational passion that they feel for only each other.
Definitely read this one!
** I received this as an ARC and this is my honest review. #TemptingFate #NetGalley**
I LOVED the story of Felicity and Gabriel. LOVED it. I love that Kerrigan Byrne showed us a character whose strength comes through in her self-awareness--that she's so strong but not in the traditional headstrong way. Felicity--bookworm, botanist, introverted hummingbird of a woman is just so easy to be enamored with. She knows her limits, tries very hard to do what she can within her limits, and is just so kind. I was rooting for her and was so glad to see her and Gabriel end up together.
Equally lovely is Gabriel. Shy, gruff, quiet Gabriel. A hero used to living in hiding or in the shadows--only feeling the love of a sibling and never feeling understood or that he could really trust many. This hulk of a man is also easy to be enamored with --his adoration and protectiveness of Felicity makes it impossible to do anything but adore him.
While these two are not the usual, in many ways, I loved them separately and together. The things that they felt limited them, is what I think made them that much more interesting and stronger than the normal headstrong alpha characters. I also really enjoyed Felicities ongoing defense and meditation on why romance novels are not only worthwhile but superior in many ways.
Fantastic read and if I had any complaint it was that I read it too quickly and am sad that it's over.
This was so exciting to read. One of my favorite scarred heroes, Gabriel, got his story. He has always been living in the shadows from the start of the series but now he is forced into the light. Felicity is the last of the Goode sisters and the gentlest of the lot. She is angelic to Gabriel demon. Her being in danger brings out all of his raging protective instincts. Kerrigan Byrne never fails to write a page turning story that satisfies. From the moment you turn the first page you are deeply engrossed and committed to the characters and the story to the very last happy ending.
I have been waiting to read this book for what seems like forever after read other pervious book in this series.
While readying Mercy and Raphael’s story, I was side-smacked by Gabriel S. and immediately couldn’t wait for this release and for his and Felicity’s story. I love Gabe. He’s the perfect hero of the Beauty and the Beast variety which is my favorite trope. Him and felicity falling in love set my heart abuzz. I do have some notes though...
Spoilers:
They were both virgins yet sex was so seamless. I think I would have enjoyed them fumbling a bit
As much as I loved Gabe’s new form, part of me wished that he was still his old self to see how that would have played out for him and felicity.
Apart from that this book was PERFECT.
Having read and loved every book in the Goode Girls Romance Series I knew this last book would be good. I did not know it would be this good! Felicity Goode is a beautiful but broken woman. She can't stand crowds, small talk or false bravado. So when someone tries to abduct her she decides to hire a bodyguard. Garrett Severand, a.k.a. Gabriel Sauvageau, is just the man for the job. He is big, lethal dangerous, and in love with Felicity. Talk about your gentle giant! He is a killing machine when Felicity is in danger but when the danger is passed, he gently holds her in his embrace. All throughout the series, Gabriel has been a tortured soul, it is wonderful to finally see him have his moment in the sun. This book is filled with danger and suspense, but the gentle love between Felicity and Gabriel is so beautiful. There are many twists and turns throughout the book and it didn't end quite how I thought it would. I loved every minute of it.
Thank you to Oliver Heber Books for allowing me to read and review this book!
Once again Kerrigan Byrne brings us a story about 2 people who are tormented/broken/lost that together find love and it's magic and beauty. Gabriel has lived his life in a world of destruction, pain and blood. He freely admits he's a violent man, even excels at it. Felicity is quiet, timid even, but tormented by her own insecurities and worries. Even as she admits there is nothing to fear, much as she hates it, she is sometimes overwhelmed by them and suffers from panic attacks. Neither feels whole, both feel alone even surrounded by other (in Felicity's case, siblings who love her). As real danger threatens Felicity's life, Gabriel steps out of the shadows where he's been for the past year & more and into Felicity's sphere. And so we are given what turns out to be, at heart, a sweet romance as they discover what they thought they didn't have with the help of each other and love -- he brings forth strength and safety, she brings forth gentleness and joy. There is still plenty of passion, action and surprises to keep you entertained and the pages turning. A satisfying and enjoyable story from beginning to end.
So we finally get to the story of Felicity, the quiet, shy, bespectacled Goode sister, and the disfigured, violent king of the Fauves Gabriel Savageau.
Felicity is now on her own in the Cresthaven mansion, as Nora is expecting and Mercy is travelling with Raphael. Felicity is now heiress to her father's fortune, if she marries an aristocrat within the year, but she thinks that someone is out to harm or kill her, so she has decided to hire a bodyguard or protector.
Gabriel has undergone a huge amount of surgery from Titus, to repair his facial disfigurements. He has also got Titus to tell Felicity that he after saving her at the end of the previous book. He is irrevocably in love with Felicity, but certain that he will be too uncouth and violent for her innocence. He is lurking by Cresthaven to catch a final glimpse of Felicity, when she barrels into him, without her glasses and she assumes he is there to apply for the bodyguard job.
Felicity is meek, quiet, and very cautious. she prefers plants and nature to most people, and is scared of noise, chaos, too many people, blood and much more, she is also prone to panic attacks. She is also too sweet and accommodating for her own good, keeping a full complement of staff for her single self for example.
Gabriel, posing as Gareth Severand takes the post, and unlike anyone else she has been exposed to, Felicity is not in the least afraid or repulsed by Gabriel. As they get to know each other, they are soon thrust into dealing with a number of attempts on Felicity's life. As they start to solve the mystery and close in on the killer, who may or may not be Marco, one of the Fauve's, they start to slowly give into their mutual attraction.
There was a lot to like in this book, the way that Gabriel was described, and his thoughts and feelings were so tenderly done. I usually root for the heroine, and I did also for Felicity, but she felt a little underdeveloped as a character in comparison to Gabriel. I think it is because this is a shorter novel, we couldn't get the full exploration that we would in a longer book.
I really liked the denouement, with the villain, and the unexpected connections, I also thought the epilogue was a lovely light-hearted ending, after all Gabriel's angst and pain.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and all opinions are my own.
I adore large scarred heroes and Gabriel did not disappoint me. Felicity was a quieter sort of heroine, especially compared to her sisters. I enjoyed their love story and watching Felicity come into her own in her own gentle way. This wasn’t my favorite of the Goode sisters series but it was satisfying nonetheless. I always enjoy Kerrigan Bryne’s writing and this was no exception.
Tempting Fate focuses on the connection between Felicity Goode and Gabriel Sauvageau. Gabriel has been in love with Felicity since first laying eyes on her years before. When he learns she needs a bodyguard, he decides to do anything in his power to keep her safe, including staying around her despite his fears of negatively impacting her life.
Tempting Fate is another installment of Byrne's Goode Girls series. Overall, I really enjoyed the book. The first 2/3 of the book might elevate into the status of being my favor Byrne story yet. I adored Felicity and Gabriel. My favorite trope is a pining hero! My only critical feedback is that the main safety concerns becomes an afterthought and is quickly resolved at the end of the story. Overall, a 4.75 to 5.0 out of 5.0! This is a great read!
I received an ARC of this story in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. My opinions were not influenced by the ARC in any way.
Wow! I really liked the first book in the Goode Girls series (Seducing a Stranger) but this one is the best of all of them in my opinion. To me it was part Phantom of the Opera and part Beauty and the Beast.
True to Kerrigan Byrne novels- this has steamy romance and mystery all wrapped up in an awesome story line. You really cannot go wrong reading one of her books.
I really felt Gabriel's magnetism, his raw need and power, his strength- his character just seemed to leap right off the page. I loved seeing the other characters make appearances but not enough to take away from Felicity's story. The love felt between the two was more than just lust and it was nice that she got to know him before truly finding out who he was because once she knew of his true background, I could see her falling for him out of pity, but I never sensed this here.
Another really well done novel from Kerrigan Byrne that I didn't want to end!
I received an advanced copy in exchange for a review
Tempting Fate is my first 5 star read in quite a few months. I wanted romance and steam and adventure and danger and characters that had me caught in my feelings and it’s not often that a book gives me everything I want, but Tempting Fate hit it out of the park.
What really did it for me was Gabriel Sauvageau who I am now placing as my favorite Kerrigan Byrne. Gabriel is a man that was honed for violence and destruction. A man that only knows the power of his fists. So it’s of course terrifying to Gabriel the attraction and desire he feels for Felicity Goode, the most gentle of the Goode Girls.
Felicity is shy and anxious and often overcome by her nerves. But despite her anxiety getting the best of her, she is a woman of deep bravery and courage that draws the eye of Gabriel simply because she is being her.
It was these two layered characters that are opposite in every possible that work so well.
What made this a 5 star read for me was just how romantic and protective and gentle a man like Gabriel could be for a shy woman like Felicity. The depth of his love for her, and the strength of her love for him, made every moment between them so fraught with anticipation and excitement. If love doesn’t feel like how Gabriel and Felicity love each other then I want no part of it.
But in the midst of this love story between them, there is so much adventure and danger and a crazy ass plot twist at the end that had me on the edge of my seat. It’s been awhile since I have felt so absorbed by a book, but you just have to read it to believe it.
This is just my type of story. Shy but kind heroine and a large, romantic hero who is obsessed about her. The hero admires and protects the heroine from afar and when they finally do meet sparks fly. But they also truly like each other which is a huge plus. Spoiler Warning: the hero has horrific scaring and is made to be presentable by what I can only call plastic surgery. This suspended my belief for a bit but overall it didn't take me out of the story. All of the books in this series are a bit shorter and this one was not exception so be prepared for that. But it was a lovely story and I would highly recommend it.
Tempting Fate by Kerrigan Byrne
Rating: 5-stars
Summary: Gabriel Savageau has loved Felicity Goode for a long time. He was the leader of a nasty gang and has decided to leave his old life and start over. As he prepares to leave London, Felicity mistakes his identify for an interviewee for an ad she posted for personal protection and hires him on the spot. Gabriel is now going by Gareth to protect his identity and having undergone reconstructive surgery to restore his face, Felicity does not recognize him, but feels safe in his company. The story continues with the two growing close and discovering who is out to get Felicity.
Overall opinion: I loved this book and read it in less than two days (a feat for a mom with two young kids!). I enjoyed Mercy and Raphael’s story so much that I had this one bookmarked for once it came out and honestly, it was better that Mercy and Raphael’s story in my opinion.
Gabriel loves Felicity but feels he does not deserve her. He has done many evil things during his time as a crime lord, it is all he has ever known. He does not feel that he would bring anything positive to her life, but when he learns that she was accosted on the street and received a threatening note, he cannot leave without first seeing that she is safe.
Felicity is seen as meek, timid, and fragile by her friends and family. In reality, she does not care for the whirl of the Ton and would rather spend time with close friends and family than in a crowded ballroom trying to decide if someone just insulted her or wants to be best friends (and do not even mention trying to understand gentleman’s motives for seeking her out).
They are a good balance and a fun couple to read. Gabriel assumes his desires are darker than anything Felicity would want, even though (because?) he knows she likes to read romance novels. Turns out her desires match his own and they are hot together.
Also, I loved the mystery in this book. Sometimes mystery is thrown in to make a romance longer or add content to a book. Here, the mystery is how the characters ultimately come together and is not a subplot of the book. Still, the romance is not pushed to the side either; they work well together.
I absolutely recommend this book if you like a good mystery and a sizzling romance! I have read two of the four books in the series, so while I think you should read them all (I am going back to read the first two), it is not necessary to have read the prior books to also enjoy this book. Enough is explained that you can follow along (although it may be a richer read knowing the other characters better).
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
WOW! This one is all amazing! As expected of Kerrigan Byrne. After Dancing with Danger, I was so excited for this book.
****spoilers from Dancing with Danger*****
Some book romances can be described as spicy, hot, scorching, gut-wrenching, etc. This one is definitely synonymous to reverence. I can see that Gabriel puts her on a pedestal, but what makes this book so amazing is that she does not let him see her as someone that is above human. She is not the "strong" heroine, but she is definitely very strong. Her inner strength is amazing and characters like her show readers that strength is not just being able to fight with your fist or your words. As someone who had to work on and still working on my communication skills, Felicity was very refreshing. It is very interesting to see that yes there are some people that you click with and communicating with them is so much easier. I also have someone like that.
We don't often often 2 virgin MC in historical romance. There is an abundance of virgin heroines. Some virgin heroes, but both? So that was a different dynamic and really interesting to read. Though they obviously had the best sex of their lives form the get-go (it's a historical romance, what did you expect)
I know I say this every time but I do love Kerrigan Byrne's books and when I open one up, I know I'm going to be able to get lost in her story.
Tempting Fate is the fourth installment of the Goode Girls series and our main characters are Gabriel and Felicity. Gabriel is the disfigured older brother to Raphael and Felicity is the twin to Mercy Goode from the last book in the series. While I enjoyed this story, I was slightly underwhelmed by the characters and I don't know if that's because Mercy and Raphael were so interesting and engaging while these two were more shy / quiet and reserved but there was something about these two that didn't wow me. With that said, I was cheering for them the whole way.
I loved that Felicity didn't care about Gabriel's roughness and by keeping his secret, Gabriel risks having any sort of relationship with her but when things come to a head, it's Raphael and Felicity who help them to see what they could have.
While this wasn't my favorite of the series, I did enjoy it. I appreciate that Byrne continues to bring the other characters into her stories with the main characters so we can see what is going on with them. If you're looking for a new historical romance, consider picking this one up and don't forget the other books of the series.
Loved this. I loved the balance between sweet Felicity and tortured Gabriel. It was beautiful how their flaws were not seen as such by the other and they were wholly accepted by one another. Fans self over the love scenes.
This is an entertaining, well-written, steamy, historical romance novel. It is an excellent addition to Ms. Byrne's outstanding Goode Girls series. It has a likable female protagonist, a dark, damaged male protagonist, a heart-warming romance, drama, intrigue, wit, a wonderful sense of family, and a happily ever after ending. This novel is fast paced and kept me engaged from the first page until its surprise ending. It can easily be read and enjoyed as a stand alone, but is better when read in order, as it contains references to past events and the stories of the other Goode sisters.
Net Galley kindly provided me with an ARC of this novel, and this is my honest opinion.
Tempting Fate- Kerrigan Byrne
This is book 4 in the Good girl series which is a spin off of the Victorian Rebels series of which I have not read all of.
The book was not hard to follow because of this but I can see this could be a 5 star book for me if I knew the whole backstory.
This one is a bit of a Beauty And The Beast retelling. Scarred tortured hero pining over the innocent virginal girl of his dreams. And going to extreme lengths to keep her safe, as well as see her because he is just so GONE for this woman. There are areas where or f our mai characters goes into the past and those parts were a little disconnected to me since I didn’t read all the previous books. I am confident if you read both series in order prior to this book you will LOVE this book.
So we have our hero Gabriel or Gareth as he tells our heroine at first) and our heroine is sweet Felicity. I just loved her she just had away about her. She was tougher than most others gave her credit for.
Our heroine is obviously Felicity and she is one of the Goode girls and Mercy from book #3 Dancing With Danger is her twin sister. So that is also interesting and something I’ll be glad to learn more about from everyones back stories and I will do a re-read of this then to compare my enjoyment.
Something I thought was unique in this book is that Felicity turns out to be very curious in the bedroom and there is even a seduction from our heroine to our hero. She reads romance books and just wants that sort of love story.
So of course there’s a bit of a blur for the conflict part where her twin sister comes and other sisters and their husbands and just history that I did not know so didn’t really interest me.
But as you know there is a always a conflict before the HEA and all is revealed. And while Gabriel does not feel worthy of Felicity she is not letting him get away.
This was a sweet story and I thought the spicy scenes were done perfectly.
Of course I will always read more by this author isn’t he future including her backlist.
Thank you to Netgalley for ARC of this book.
4.5 Stars
Disfigured in fighting pits as a lad, Gabriel Sauvageau has lived his entire life without the touch of a woman. As the brains and brawn behind London’s most ferocious smuggling syndicate The Fauves, he knows he doesn’t deserve shy, bespectacled Felicity Goode. But that doesn’t stop him from watching her. Though she wiles away hours immersed in the pages of romance novels, shy and anxious Felicity Goode has vowed never to become a bride. How can she share a life—not to mention a bed—with a man if she can’t bring herself to share a simple conversation without trembling and stuttering? Once news of her obscene inheritance circulates through the ton, she is barraged not only by a slew of suitors, but also several distressing threats against her life. What she needs is a bodyguard. The large, scarred ruffian she finds on her stoop is exactly what she has been looking for.
Felicity is the fourth Goode girl to find love, I was drawn to her as she’s the timid, shy, woman totally lacking in self confidence but has an inner strength which finally is allowed to grow. I was intrigued by Gabe in the previous book & thoroughly enjoyed his resurrection as Gareth Severand & how his gentleness around Felicity was all encompassing. A lovely love story of two flawed people finding each other. Strong characters & a very paced story had me devouring the book in two sittings There were a couple of twists & surprises at the end which I wasn’t expecting. I did feel that there were a couple of unanswered questions about Felicity’s past & how the Sauvageau's came to be safe
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Gabriel and Felicity are the infinite couple. He is a brutal man and she is a shy woman.
Together they have the epitome of love. This is an awesome story to win the game of love. With unforgettable reasons why they should not be together and treachery to keep them apart this book is unbelievably entertaining.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
