Special thanks to Macmillan and Tor/Forge and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This book I'm thinking might be thriller genre, but with no thrill,..... I was not crazy about this book. I feel like it was plucked out of the skeletons of a million other books before it. Nothing unique. Its not unreadable. I feel like I'm being mean, I'm not. I couldn't identify with the characters.
Ok to be fair, the story is about Lily, A great reporter, who gets fed her stories by an anonymous source, Smith...Lily also has a cute little girl, raised alone by Lily. When Smith starts feeding Lily snippets about herself instead of the next hot news story, she starts to finally come to life a little in the book. Smith thinks Lily's sister Cassie, whom everyone assumed was dead, is alive some 30 years later now.
But Lily is worried that her sister Cassie may not be living her best life but may be in danger that only Lily can help with, but the confliction is does Lily want her sister found and possibly her perfect life ruined.
Sorry 3 stars. And only because it picked up a little.
Ryan is such an engaging author. Her writing style, short chapters, written in third person, from each main character's POV, gives the reader every chance to solve the puzzle ahead of the characters. Unless of course, one of the characters is unreliable. Almost all of Ryan's novels use betrayal as a major focal point. Here each of the characters has felt betrayed, and all of them are keeping secrets.
LIly, the one who is outwardly perfect, is not sharing the past disappearance of her sister. Greer, her assistant, shows one face to the public, while hoarding her inner truth, Cassie, Lily's sister, keeps her life secret from the world, and Lily's Anonymous Source, keeps everything including his/her gender secret.
Ryan is a subtle writer. Many might not take the time to analyze her choice of character's names. For example, Lily symbolizes "purity and innocence", Greer means 'watchful or vigilant', Cassie (short of Cassandra) "she who entangles men". Another strength I admire about Ryan is her strong sense of verisimilitude. As her fans know, Ryan is also a television news reporter. Thus everything about Greer and Lily comes across as authentic. I was especially drawn to the Emmy scene. I felt I was right in the room.
The novel has been given star reviews in both Kirkus and Publisher's Weekly. A consistent nominee and winner of prestigious literary awards, Ryan's Her Perfect Life belongs in the winner's group. Book clubs and individuals should reserve there copies now.
Highly recommended
Full disclosure: I received this ARC from NetGalley and Macmillan- Tor/ Forge in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for this opportunity.
Hank Phillippi Ryan did a wonderful job creating a suspenseful story with lots of shady characters and plot twists to keep you guessing. This was a great beach read
If Her Perfect Life was a rollercoaster ride, I would describe it as a slow suspenseful incline with the building anticipation of an unknown height followed by the possibility of a death defying drop and a crazy plot twist that leaves you breathless!
Her Perfect Life is a suspenseful story about a woman named Lily, a journalist that lives in the spotlight of what everyone views as her perfect life. It’s not easy for her to maintain her perfect image because let’s face it… no one is perfect. Everyone has secrets to hide. Lily has a past full of secrets that she definitely doesn’t want others to know. Her number one priority is to keep her daughter Rowen out of the spotlight.
I guess in order to maintain a perfect image, it is crucial to surround yourself with trustworthy colleagues and friends. So, who can Lily really trust? What secrets will be exposed that can potentially ruin her perfect reputation? Who is the mysterious person that keeps tipping her off on juicy leads to use in her reporting? Should she worry about this mysterious person who seems to know a little too much about her personal life, her past, her secrets?
Hank Phillippi Ryan did a wonderful job creating a suspenseful story with lots of shady characters and plot twists to keep you guessing. This was a great beach read!
What would you do if you had a secret that you didn't want the world to know for fear of destroying the life that you had built?
Hank Phillippi Ryan addresses this very dilemma in her latest novel of suspense that keeps you guessing until the very last chapter. Lily Atwood and her daughter Rowen have what seems is the perfect life. Yet, we learn early on that Lily has a past that she would like to remain in the past. With the help of a source "Mr. Smith" , the tips he passes on have helped Lily's career, but why has he chosen her? Who is this guy, and why does he want to know so much about her sister?
The way the author writes the events is through the eyes of each character using the past and the present. All the while peeling back the layers of past events to draw you in ever so slowly. She makes you feel like your right there going through the events as they unfold. The pages start to fly, the questions start building and the twist and turns keep you guessing until the end. If your looking for suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat, than this book is for you.

The past catches up to the present in Her Perfect Life, a fast paced, character driven thriller. Lily Atwood is a star TV reporter, much loved by her wide audience for her cheery personality. She’s always ready to talk to her fans, pose for a selfie or answer a question. But that’s not the real Lily. The real Lily lives with many secrets. She’s extra protective of her young daughter Rowen, the product of an affair with a married man who abandoned them both. She grieves for her sister Cassie who disappeared from college years ago and was never seen again. So when one of her sources comes to her and her producer with an unusual plan, she meets with him. Is it a mistake?
The story is told in three voices of different women. As the story slowly unfolds, you begin to understand what happened in the past and what is unfolding now. Then comes a totally unexpected conclusion! 5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan-Tor/Forge and Hank Phillippi Ryan for this ARC.
Hank Phillippi Ryan is one of those authors I so look forward to reading. She's a masterette at the twist and turn suspense in her stories and it keeps me turning the pages. In Her Perfect Life, we meet Lily Atwood whose an investigative reporter whose life seems "perfect". But really, whose life actually is? Ms. Ryan starts the story with an unsolved mystery and starts adding the "chinks" of Lily's "behind-the-scenes life. She's great at characters who you so want to trust but there's just a tinge of suspicion underlying their motives. Just what are they after and what is there in it for them? I love the twists and turns, the suspense and sudden surprises, the characters that I just keep at an arm's length because I just don't trust them. It all comes together in an unputdownable thrill of a ride novel. That's the gift of a Hank Phillippi Ryan novel.
I want to thank Netgalley and Ms. Ryan for the honor of reading her newest novel and the exciting, thrilling, suspenseful read it was! She has made me a fan of this genre! All opinions and thoughts in this review are my heartfelt own.
A broken elbow is great for one thing- more reading time!!! Lily is a beloved tv reporter. What the world doesn't know, she has a secret source that feeds her tips and stories. No one is the wiser Lily is a fake. But the tables are turned when Lily's source gives her secrets about her own life the world doesn't know! This was a really good thriller book that I enjoyed until the very end. I think the book dragged just a bit in the middle but the ending was great!!! I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
Lily Atwood seems to have it all: a great career, a beautiful daughter and she's quite happy too. She works as a television reporter and has Emmys to prove how successful she truly is. However, she is a harboring a huge secret that is in danger of being exposed. Will she be able to protect the secret?
This is another great Hank Phillippi Ryan book. Great characters, an intriguing plot, and some twists you don't expect makes for a great book.
This was a slow burn and it took me a little while to get into the story. I found the story more interesting once I learned more about Cassie. The twist at the end is one that I didn't see coming. I wish the ending could have been different but I understand why it had to be end that way.

Full of glamour, intrigue and characters this story is about Lily Atwood, a famous television reporter living a perfect life where everyone knows her but is her life as good as it seems?
She has an anonymous source providing her with secret stories about people but soon life takes a turn and that source starts giving lily inside information about her own life. She starts to see her perfect life crumble down with each message from that source.

This is my first book from @hankpryan i felt a slightly confused with multiple POVs running between two timelines. But some characters were captured beyond expectation. At points it was a little predictable yet that twists and turns throughout kept me deeply engaged.
I made it halfway through Her Perfect Life and simply couldn't force myself to keep going. I feel like this story is just too far fetched, it's not believable that people are this dumb, and much of the "detail" is unnecessary. It feels like a lot of "fluff" just added for word count. This is the first book I've read by this author and I don't think I'll be looking into any more of her work.
I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to read this. It just wasn't for me.
I've enjoyed many of Hank Phillippi Ryan's novels, so I was excited for the opportunity to read an ARC of this one. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for an entertaining read.
Like most of Ryan's protagonists (and the author herself), Lily Atwood is an accomplished journalist, a local TV star and single mother with a perfect life. And Greer, her steadfast producer, helps maintain the facade.
The story alternates among three viewpoint characters: Lily, Greer, and Lily's older sister Cassie, who disappeared when she was 18 years old, a freshman in college. Lily's and Cassie's chapters are written in close third person; Greer's are told in first person.
For quite a while, Lily has had a secret source (a la Deep Throat) known only as Smith. for many of her news stories. But then the information he begins feeding her comes from her own life, involving secrets she has worked hard to keep hidden. Eventually, "Smith" reveals himself, and nothing is ever as it seems.
As Lily puts more trust in Smith, she learns more about what happened to Cassie. But can she believe everything she's told? Lily is torn between love for her sister and a desire to shield her daughter from anything unsavory that might disrupt her perfect life.
There's a great twist at the end that I didn't see coming.
Fans of this genre will not be disappointed.
With social media, it is very hard to keep your private life private. When you are a celebrity, it becomes nearly impossible. This story follows Lily Atwood, a television reporter that has spent her whole life keeping her past a secret from the world. She starts getting anonymous tips that pan out to make great stories, but when the source reveals they know information about her life, she starts to worry about the safety of her family.
The book had me hooked from the very beginning and kept me guessing throughout. I loved how the book followed two different timelines and found that the story flowed wonderfully. Mystery and suspense lovers will devour this and feel like they can’t put it down! This was my first Hank Phillippi Ryan novel, but it certainly won’t be my last.
Error Location 2710 - "Oh, cool, perfect." Marianne didn't look up as Lily entered, (I believe it should be Cassie not Lily)
Error Location 4150 Cassie had ruined her ow life. (should say own)
Hank Philippi Ryan is one of my favorite writers. This is a psychological thriller expertly-crafted, weaving together the long-buried secrets of the past with a mystery that is unfolding in the present. I love all of Hank’s thrillers, but I think this my favorite yet! I highly recommend it.
Her Perfect Life is the twisty roller coaster of a book that I’ve come to expect from master storyteller Hank Phillippi Ryan! This captivating story kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end! Ryan also gives us great characters with depth and back stories that add even more layers.
The blurb sparked my interest, but it didn't live up to my expectations. Some parts were quite unlikely to even imagine. I liked the multiple POVs and the mystery was okay, but it was just "meh" overall. Nothing memorable after the final page was turned.
Thank you to the publisher for my copy of this one - all opinions are my own.
Another fun and twisty character drama from Hank Phillippi Ryan! Yet again, I enjoyed the twisting plot of this one, although I did find the many choices of Lily and Cassie frustrating most of the time. I certainly did not expect the direction the story took and the final twists were entertaining.
Overall this is the kind of easy summer reading that makes for a perfect escape.
This novel starts off with interesting story lines but deteriorates as the facts are revealed. The scenes with the original detectives investigating the crimes are not believable. The focus on the main characters life being perfect becomes monotonous. A person of her status is not able to keep her sister’s disappearance a secret with the internet access available today. As the book continued, I found myself skimming because I had lost interest in the outcome. You can surmise, I was not a fan of this mystery.
From one of the nicest authors in the business, Hank Phillippi Ryan, comes her lastest standalone novel, Her Perfect Life. I couldn't help but think about Hank when reading about Lily. Hank is also a journalist who has won several Emmys, but perhaps the similarities end there.
Lily Atwood has a perfectly curated life, with an adorable daughter and a successful career. But, her daughter is the result of an involvement with a married man. If news of thsi got out, she could be ruined. Also, Lily has never forgotten her older sister, Cassie, who mysteriously disappeared at age 18 when Lily was only 7. Add in a mysterious informant and a producter who may be just a bit jealous of Lily's success, and you know something is bound to happen.
The story flips between now and before. Before is the story of why Cassie disappeared. But, as Lily digs into her sister's disappearance, the information she finds is startling.
I enjoyed this book which had a backstory. The reveal of the informant's true identity was a surprise, but I did suspect that person was not forthcoming, plus one person in Cassie's backstory was clearly crooked. However, I didn't realize the extent of their plan. Well crafted!
