I absolutely loved this book. There's something about highlander romance that's just so poignant and captivating.
The storytelling was really engaging and fast paced, which I liked.
The characters were written beautifully, and the couple's chemistry was fantastic. Their scenes together were so intimate and special.
Something that bothered me a little bit was the transition between characters' POVs in the same chapter, but it wasn't bad enough to take from the book's beauty.
Also, I loved how each character was written perfectly, they all had interesting angles.
Overall, a great book.

This book is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone because these characters are new.
While this trope has been done before (stolen bride), Mary Wine always makes it feel fresh with her dialogue, twists/turns, and steamy goodness! I liked both characters and wanted them to get their HEA. My only complaint is that the book seemed to end abruptly, so I am hoping for more resolution in the next installment of this series.
Lost in the Highlands…
How do I know I’m in the Highlands? Well, the English vs Scottish vs Highlands enmity is alive and well. The kilts are aplenty. And strong men and women are winding their way through political and family intrigue like it’s last night’s dinner. In other words, just another day at the office… Told in this author’s entertaining writing style, Annis and Rolfe successfully wound through it all…
Strong characters who smartly work through every difficult situation is a hallmark of this series and Rolfe and Annis wore those labels well. Everywhere you turned there was a challenge and these two were up for it. No question. Annis was a prize that was worth killing over and that was the heart of this traitorous tale. A widow she may be, but returning herself to her family was going to take a lot of courage and a little bit of luck. Rolfe was a laird in all but name, and protecting his family, doing his duty was foremost in his mind every day. What happened though when he met someone who would challenge every loyalty he had… Well, you would have a love story that would transcend it all…
Full of action and intrigue, set in the wild hills of Scotland, this read had characters to cheer for and fall in love with yourself. I certainly did!
The Highlander’s Captive, by Mary Wine.
Have you ever felt completeness after reading a good book? Or how about utter joy and inexplicable satisfaction? Well I have. In fact right after I read the last line to this brilliantly written love story. The writer did an extraordinary job of intertwining three dramatic stories to together, and then tying them together in a neat little bow at the end.
I mean wow, what a masterpiece. I was not expecting three great stories for price of one! The action was heart pounding and sometimes there was excited anticipation of what was going to happen next. The drama I was in aww of. The heat from the drama delivers a powerful one, two punch to the constant need to be the superior family in the Scottish Highlands.
Once you thought that the story couldn’t get any better, there was another betrayal waiting in the wind on the next page. Every juicy tidbit of abandonment, betrayal, anguish and hurt, I ate it all up. I simply couldn’t get enough of the story. That’s why I read the book one sitting. I had to see this standoff among the three families to the end!
You can’t just read a book like this and say, “oh, I’ll finish tomorrow”. I am not crazy! The entertainment among the characters did not disappoint. I loved how all characters had a strong playing part in the success of this story. For me this book reads very easily.
I definitely did not find the story boring. I read the book and the characters dialogue with clarity and understanding. There were humorous moments that adds some light moments to the story. But it’s the steamy love affair between Annis and Rolfe that lights the fire to ones soul. Their moments of passion was the desert that goes with the story.
These two are so perfectly written in the story. I was like “ what’s going to happen next?; what’s going to happen next? Oh no he didn’t? Girl you better set that little boy Seath straight.
He playing with the big boys now, and they pay hard.” Where’s Rolfe at? He’ll take care of him. I recommend this book with two snaps and a twist of deliciousness. Until next time my fellow readers… read on!
Couldn’t get into this one, as much as I was interested in a highlander romance. I couldn’t connect with the characters and the pace was very slow.
Stealing the Bride
It was a time when women were used as pawns, and stealing brides was a common occurrence. Annis was married to a man who did not care about her, and now, someone from another clan was stealing her to use as a pawn. Could she find a way to control her destiny?
When Rolfe goes to rescue his cousin, who decided to steal a bride, he is drawn by Annis. However, Annis wants nothing to do with any man. Can Rolfe change her mind? It will be an adventure across the highlands. This is a romance, so there is hope. However, it is always heartbreaking to read about how women were used as pawns. If you like Scottish historical romance with adventure, you might enjoy this tale.

I just want to say in advance, I tend to like most stories from Mary Wine, and this is not an exception. Though Annis had a rough life due to her heritage, she was smart and careful. So, it was very fun to watch her go from being a pawn for greedy and power hungry men, to being a beloved woman whose family isn’t the focus of her value. I truly enjoyed watching the ups and downs, but it was so very bittersweet at the end. Now I look forward to Terin’s future, Jasper’s, and another future story with Lucas. (fingers crossed!!)

This historical romance had a lot going on in it. From kidnapping, to arranged marriages, to murder plots, no stone was left unturned. It was a little hard to keep up with and made for a slightly convoluted storyline. The story seemed rushed, jumping from one plot device to the next. All of the characters were very one dimensional with little to no development taking place. And there wasn't much of a romantic connection between the two main characters. Yes, they had some slick love scenes but it was very forced.

Mary Wine's latest book is titled "The Highlander's Captive", which is part of the Highland Rogues series. It involves a highlander, a stolen bride, and strife between clans.
Due to having royal blood, poor widowed Annis has to deal with men from various clans trying to steal her as a bride for their own selfish purposes. Fortunately, she is not someone who would lie still and she takes matters into her own hands.
Rolfe is not your typical alpha male highlander. While he is a strong and skilled warrior, he is very caring and thoughtful. He was unlike the others as he treated her with respect.
The journey Annis and Rolfe take together is long and full of struggles - dealing with rival clans and family conflict, there was never a dull moment.
While this is part of a series, it could be read as a standalone. It is fast-paced, has likeable characters, and is well written. A great read for anyone who likes Scottish historical romance.
The Highlander's Captive Bride is the third in the Highland rogue's series. The story continues with Rolfe, who has no desire to marry, although he knows it is his duty to his clan. Annis is the much sought after bride of royal blood the her late husband's family has less than honorable plans for.
when Rolfe's cousin kidnaps Annis with the intention to marry her, Rolfe steps in to keep peace.
Rolfe intends to keep Annis as his captive. soon the two find there is more to their relationship than they want to admit.
Like the other two books in the series, this book was entertaining, fast paced and well written. I was sorry to see the end, and can't wait for book #4
A very big thank you to Dragonblade Publishing and Net Galley for allowing me to enjoy this book
ARC received for review
Annis' husband has died and his family has not good plans for her or her sister-in-law. She escapes and is captured by Rolfe's cousin. His cousin doesn't keep her, but "gives" her to his brother. Then Rolfe has had enough and he steals her. It got a little confusing at times with all side stories and people, but there are now lots of peeps to get stories. Rolfe has his work cut out for him to win Annis over, but true love wins in the end.
So this is the third book in a series, but as with most historical fiction series, you don't need to read the others to be able to understand what's going on. It brings characters mentioned in other books to the forefront as main characters. In this particular book, we follow Rolfe of the Munro clan, and Annis, an English woman with royal blood.
I am really impressed with the writing style of this author - I felt like I was in the Scottish Highlands, and read the whole story with a Scottish accent lol! The author seems to have a knack for being able to make everything feel really lifelike - her world-building is fantastic, her characters are real and relatable, and she has a great premise!
Rolfe... sigh. What a tall, dark, and sexy man in a kilt xD I loved that this character had so many layers. He was driven by a code of loyalty and duty, and was able to listen to both his head and his heart. He was smart and driven, and all around a really interesting and relatable character.
I also really liked Annis. Despite basically being treated as a piece of property, she persevered and took her life into her own hands. I loved how resilient she was and how determined she was to control what happened to her. I loved her and Rolfe together, I thought the romance worked really well.
There were a few side characters mentioned that I would LOVE to hear more about - I'm hoping they were being set up as the main characters in the next book, that's what it seems like!
Overall, good plot development, great characters, fantastic writing style! This author is now on my watch list!
This is a well titled book. It's full of highland escapades: stealing brides, family honor, political maneuvering, and strong independent women. I enjoyed this adventure that has Rolfe Munro, whom we've met in previous stories in this series, finally find a woman able to captivate his interest. I found the dance between these two interesting as they are drawn together.
Annis is so tired of being used as a pawn for political gain. She's finally widowed from the man who used her body without any interest in her heart. Her mother-in-law Benedicta Duncan is ruthless in her ambitions to thrust her clan into favored status with the Court. Annis takes her chance to slip away during Lonn's funeral only to run into the inept clutches of young Seath Leslie. Rolfe's aunt Euna sends Rolfe to haul Seath home from his fools errand and ends up helping the Leslie's bring Annis home. Rolfe is enraged by the abuse Annis has been through from both Seath and the Duncans He decides the safest place for her is at his Da's keep. The situation is complicated by his aging & ailing father having a bride, a much too young 16 year old bride, waiting for Rolfe upon his return home. Annis decides to escape again when the old Laird refuses to accept an English woman to be considered by Rolfe. These two seem to fall in love in spite of all the roadblocks set before them.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced reader's copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Born of a royal blood line Annis pretty much belongs to whoever has her, and when Rolfe Monroe sees her he wants her too. He’s been escaping marriage, but he knows as the laird’s son he needs to have an heir, but does he need to steal himself a wife? A fun story to read in a time period where woman were only good for one thing, producing heirs. I love how a mutual respect grows between Annis and Rolfe as he realizes he wants this feisty woman and will do whatever he needs to win her. I voluntarily read and reviewed this excellent book filled romance.
What's not to love about a seriously wonderful highlander and the role he plays in rescuing a stolen bride? An adventure with two amazing characters, Rolfe and Annis, who are both thrown together when least expected.
Intriguing, entertaining and a sizzling chemistry pull this story together and as Mary always does, holds your interest until the end!
A glimpse of future characters toward the end that only made me wish for this next in this series to hurry and come out!
such a great story. flowed very nicely. I loved these characters. I hate how barbaric it used to be for women and anyone can just claim a woman. but who could resist Rolfe? especially when he is always so kind and considerate of Annis.
The Highlander's Captive by Mary Wine is the third in the series, Highland Rogues and features Rolfe Munro who is leaving to return home after the wedding of Cora Mackenzie. He had thought to wed her but glad he had not as he observed her and her husband, Faolan McKay. He wanted someone to look at him like that. Upon arriving at home, his father gave him a letter to deliver to his aunt, his father's sister. His father knew he needed one last adventure. Upon arriving, his aunt informed him his cousin had left to steal away the young widow of Lonn Duncan and claim her wife's third of his fortune for himself. He was going to get himself killed and Rolfe could not allow that. As it happened, they were together when they came upon her, escaping from the Duncan stronghold. Seath wanted her but he didn't care about treating her properly. He was rough and crude. Rolfe didn't like it. Not at all. Would he allow Seath to keep her?
Poor Annis. Her life had bee miserable until now. She was the granddaughter of the potential her to the English throne, and as such, she was little more than a commodity. She was accused of being barren, and indeed she was, through the magic of herbs. When she escaped from the Leslie, stronghold, she should have known it was too easy, but the woman who had helped her was the lover of Seath's brother, who had claimed her. What she didn't know was that Rolfe Munro had bribed her and was now there to carry her off. He was better than Lonn or Seath. He wasn't unkind and he was not forcing her to bed. As Annis and Rolfe grew closer, things started going wrong: they returned to the Munro stronghold and found that Cian, Rolfe's father, had contracted for a bride, and she was there. Annis was prepared to be kind because she had once been in the girl's situation: she needed a friend, even if she was to marry Rolfe. Rolfe was big, and tall, and gentle, and kind, except when he had no choice. Then he was formidable. He had never loved anyone but his mother and father, and the feeling was strange. Annis loved him so much; she would take him however she could have him, with or without a wife. This was a tremendous love story with things moving so fast, sometimes it was hard to keep track. One of the best I've read.

Scotland
Stealing brides was not uncommon is the Scottish highland no matter if you are of high class ot low class. Woman were always treated like pawns to go to the highest bidder as it was their duty to help their family. Sometimes it was for financial reasons and titles. In this particular case it is for a chance to be able to sit on the throne. It was simply for a chance to sit on the royal throne even though it doesn’t matter Annis was not legitimate an heir. It will make and a much better claim if there is an heir as it is all a better chance. As everyone is basically a game piece on a game board which no one care is Annis’s life! A life she wishes had no royal title at all!
As these Scot’s actually think an heir will give them a chance on the throne. Except they never even got the King’s approval on this marriage. Her father had been naive thinking this was a good union. Annis had been hoping tgis would be a love match even though Lonn Duncan was a stranger. She soon realized it was a young girls fantasy as she thought rutting with her husband was absolutely vile and disgusting. A man who was abusive and would beat her each time she wouldn’t conceive. As if it was her fault. Of course she she wasn’t as stupid as he thought either!
The entire Duncan Clan was nothing but vile monsters and she was their blood mare just to bring an heir into the world. It was all about titles wealth, and power, she was only a pawn on their chess board. Now they got rid of her nurse, a woman who was more like her mother that Annis loved dearly! It was onlymijjj itthey had complete control over Annis! Except her nurse gave Annis some important life lessons before she left as she expected to be sacked by these black hearted monstrosities!
Now her husband was dead so they are already planning for the older brother to take her as his wife and they don’t seem to be bothered by murdering his current wife so he can have a royal marriage! Her mother in law is the leader is the Duncan pack and even more wicked than her sons. She for Campbell which is a powerful clan in Scotland and know their could be a war of they find out their sister was murdered. Sill the evil Duncan’s don’t care as long as they get what they wanted.
So Annis tried to make a run for it. Except another man Seath Leslie captures her calling her his prize.Again for her wealth and tie her up like an animal. Well when Rolfe sees how his own cousin treat a this woman he is totally disgusted. So he decides to steal her for himself and see how this works out for him.
The attraction between these two are obvious. Does Rolfe see Annis her worth as a person and get forget the royal blood that runs through her veins? Will Annis ever find a man who can love her. As that is all she wants though she knows how unrealistic it is. Will Rolfe and Annis find true love and happiness? Or will Annis be stolen again by another abusive, dangerous and wicked man? Read and find out!
Again Mary Wine write another brilliant book that I absolutely loved. I have been reading this author for over fifteen years and have loved each and every novel she has ever produced. A wonderful storyteller with her God given talent. I love the Highland Rogue series but even if your new to this series you can read as a stand alone book too. It has all the elements historical romance writers love from abduction, abuse, intrigue, deception, betrayal but most importantly trust and love. I really had a a lot empathy for the heroine and how everyone just wanted to use her!
This was definitely was a heartstring puller for me and I was completely swept away!
A book I definitely highly recommend as Mary Wine is one of the best authors in the Scottish historical genre!

The Highland Rogues by Mary Wine
1)The Highlander’s Command
2)The Highlander’s Destiny
3) The Highlander’s Captive
Annis may be illegitimate but she is still of royal blood and therefore a prize for any man she marries. She is bartered off by her family to a man in Scotland but when Rolfe sees her, he knows that he wants her for his own. Will he find away to take her from his own cousin? Fast-paced historical read with loads of drama, suspense and steam. Great characters and an entertaining read. I liked it.
The Highlander's Captive was a quick read that did not satisfy. The story was too rushed in terms of character and romantic development. The attraction did not make sense. There was no connection between the reader and the characters and the main characters themselves. Mary Wine does a good job when it comes to researching the time period (as far as I'm aware) but other than that the character-plot development needs work. I also did not understand the flashes to other people's POVs. It didn't add to the plot of the main book except to maybe set up the next few books but it was not needed. The romance was sweet but it was fake.
