2.5 stars, rounded up to 3.
Don’t Look Now is a new romantic suspense story, publishing on September 28, 2021. The novel follows a homicide detective, Jordan Poe, as she’s put on the case of a potential serial killer in her backyard. Not only that, but it’s a case that hits close to home, as she wonders if the serial killer has a connection to her younger sister. As the case begins to unfold, we’re introduced to Carter Spencer, a Texas Ranger who’s pulled onto the case as it gets darker.
Right off the bat, I must mention that this has a lot of potential triggering topics. I tried to catch them all below in a list, but this is a dark story that has a serial killer at the center and deals with drug use/drug addiction and violence of all kinds.
I’m not going to go into a lot of the plot, for the sake of keeping this a blank slate for those that feel inclined to read it, but I particularly liked Carter Spencer, both as a character and a love interest. Watching the relationship between Carter and Jordan evolve over the course of the novel was a real highlight for me and one of my favorite parts on the book.
I have a hard time putting my finger on what about this book didn’t hit with me. The pacing wasn’t what I was hoping for, as it was slower than I expected a thriller/romantic suspense/murder investigation to go. In some ways it reminded me of Melina Leigh’s romantic suspense books, but I didn’t connect to Jordan as well as I have to other man characters in books like this. A particular section in the middle of the book did pull me in a little bit more with a twist, but I figured out who the killer was early on, and I was a little disappointed that I had figured it out.
All in all, this was an okay read, but it isn’t going onto my list of books I’d like to reread.
Warning: This book discusses some sensitive topics that may be triggering for some readers including death of a loved one, murder, physical violence, sexual violence, verbal abuse, drug addictions, drug abuse, traumatic events, and vivid depictions of crime scenes.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the digital copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Oh my goodness! This is a can not put down book. Even though I figured out the "bad" guy early on, the story and characters were amazing.
Thanks yo netgalley, the publisher and author for allowing me the chance to read this ARC.
Detective Jordan Poe has relocated to Austin and is facing one of her toughest cases. A serial killer is on the loose and he delights in the way he makes his victims suffer before he kills them. Her sister may have once been a victim of the killer, but she survived…barely. Jordan won’t rest until he is captured or killed. After a confrontation with the killer, she is injured and has ocular nerve damage and may never regain her sight. Texas Ranger Carter Spencer is recruited to work with Jordan and be her “eyes”. As they hunt down the killer, they become friends, but Carter would like to be more than a friend to Jordan. The descriptions of the murders were a little too graphic for me. The seriousness of the crimes alone would have made this an interesting mystery, more so without the graphic death scene. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

2.5 Hearts Who wrote this book? It could not have been Mary Burton. Usually Burton pulls me in from page 3 or so. But this book was just so hard to even want to finish. But I did, mainly, because I hoped somehow Burton would come back to her normal self. I was sorely disappointed.
So let me set a picture, Avery is assaulted, goes blind and somehow continues to be a detective. Ummm, what? Carter becomes her eyes and thinks nothing is odd about this… Again, what?
This book actually makes no sense, Avery is so cocky that she can do everything still that she is actually irritating. And Carter is just ridiculous. Thankfully, I have read a lot of books by Burton and know what an incredible writer she is so I will pick up every book that comes after this book but if someone picked this book up as a first time reader I can’t imagine they would give Burton a chance again….. So I say to all the new writers…. Try another book because Burton is worth it!

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
My first book by Mary Burton and I can see why this prolific author is very popular. This standalone thriller/police procedural had a strong female lead, a logical storyline with a few twists and red herrings to keep the reader guessing and a good pace- no wonder I read it in no time at all.
Detective Jordan Poe is both hard-working and tenacious. She has to be. Her mother had a substance abuse problem and Jordan learnt quickly to take care of herself and her little sister Avery. When their mother died, Jordan had to cope not ony with her own but also with Avery's grief and later her descent into drug abuse. The low point came when she found Avery in her drug dealer Marco's place, tied and suffocating. Avery has been clean and sober ever since, but Jordan cannot help worrying about her.
When the first body of a young woman is found wrapped in plastic, Jordan has very little to go on to identify the victim, but when the second one is found, she has a terrible suspicion that the cases resemble what happened to Avery. The victims were young, blond, petite, and had a history of drug abuse. There is a bit of tension about who should deal with the investigation as Jordan isn't particularly happy to let the case go to Texas Ranger Carter Spenser. Carter has a tendency to rub people the wrong way, but he has experience of dealing with serial killers as well as the wisdom of recognising Jordan's detective skills and tenacity.
What made this book stand out is what happened, while Jordan was trying to save the killer's next victim. This isn't a spoiler (it maybe if you don't read blurbs)- Jordan suffers a blow to her head and is left with impaired vision. Remember she is in the middle of an ongoing investigation, the killer is still on the loose. Jordan is a fiercely independent person, but now she is forced to deal with tremendous changes to her her daily life, career and entire future.
I can't say I found it too easy to guess who the killer was- perhaps other, more savvy readers would see it early on. The plot was logical and everything was tied in the end. The only thing I wasn't sure about was the romance-it came in at a very late point in the book and I didn't feel it was necessary. This is a more plot-driven, action-packed kind of book, so the other characters apart from the protagonist were not as developped, but I think there is a potential for this standalone to become a series.
I liked Jordan and the way she dealt with adversity in her life with determination and compassion and I would certainly like to read more from this author.
Jordan Poe is a homicide detective working a case she feels is similar to something that happened to her sister, Avery, a few years ago. As she begins to investigate, a Texas Ranger is brought in to take over her case. Jordan is not having it….this is her case, not his. As she gets to know Ranger Spencer, she begins to like and appreciate him. When Jordan is injured in a attempt to rescue a kidnapped girl. Spencer steps up to help her.
Loved the slow burn relationship and romance between Jordan and Spencer.
Suspenseful, creepy and chilling, Don’t Look Now is a book I found engaging.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion. All opinions expressed are my own.
Another winner by author Mary Burton! Loved how vulnerable the main character is and has no choice but to accept help from her partner. Great serial killer story. This is a stand-alone novel.
4.5/5
Thank you #netgalley and #montlake for the eARC.

Don’t Look Now by Mary Burton is a satisfying, action-packed suspense novel. Set in Austin, Texas, this is a good police procedural featuring female detective Jordan Poe, who is investigating a brutal rape and murder. She is an intelligent, 33 year-old woman who is known for her toughness and her tenacious pursuit of criminals. She is fiercely independent in her life and her investigations, and she becomes irritated when her case is opened up to include the Texas Rangers, and Ranger Carter Spencer steps into her “territory.”
I do not want to reveal the plot, because it moves swiftly through the investigation with some startling developments and twists. The writing is straight-forward but also nicely descriptive when scenes are being set. The dialogue is believable, and I especially enjoyed Poe’s wry humor and the sometimes terse repartee between Poe and Spencer. While there were hints of possible romance, and a side story of Jordan’s drug-addicted sister now in recovery, neither of these distracts from the forward movement and excitement of the action in this skillfully written crime novel.
Thank you to Montlake Publisher/Amazon and NetGalley for the ARC. This is my unbiased review.
I had a hard time getting into this pretty basic cop and criminal story. By the third time I returned to it, I managed to read beyond 30% on my Kindle and it got better. Still your basic story with town cop not wanting to share or turn over the case to the big, bad Texas Ranger. Because the criminal was abducting and killing girls who had been using drugs, it seems like almost everyone in the town was somehow connected to the drug trade. Town cop Jordan gets badly injured in trying to save one of the girls, and her story and her sister's story (of drug abuse) turns out to be a major clue in solving the case. Probably because of that point that I will give it 3 stars instead of 2.
Jordan Poe is a homicide detective who is investigating the murders of young women by asphyxiation. The killer may also be the person who tried to kill her sister, Avery, a few years earlier. When Texas Ranger Spencer appears to help with the case, experienced Jordan is angry. Then she is injured and realizes that they will have to work together in order to find the killer.
This is your typical suspense/mystery novel. While I enjoyed it, there wasn’t anything that really made me think ‘wow’. I did like the strong relationship between the sisters but the romance between Jordan and Spencer was odd. I may or may not read another book by this author. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a digital arc of this novel that releases on September 28, 2021.
Austin homicide detective Jordan Poe finds herself chasing a serial killer that she fears is the same person who almost killed her sister two years ago. Determined, Jordan continues to work on the case after handing it over to Texas Ranger Carter Spencer, who has more experience. The two work together to solve the case when the killer comes after Jordan. Will they figure out the killer's identity in time?
Don't Look Now is a police procedural thriller full of suspense. Many unsavory suspects are introduced throughout the story until the identity of the killer and his twisted motives are uncovered. This suspense thriller will appeal to fans of plot-driven, chilling stories with a bit of romance thrown in.
This was an enjoyable read. While it’s all about the mystery, I was able to guess who it was rather early on. Of course, there was always the chance I would be wrong. I was not. However, the reasons behind the murders were quite shocking as were all the murders themselves. This was filled with details. Not only about the murders, but about the drugs, the process of hunting the killer and the battle to overcome adversity.
The romance is really non-existent but I suspected it would be and therefore, did not go into this with any expectations in that department. When it did pop up out of nowhere, it actually annoyed me as there was nothing organic about it. I liked the hero, Spencer, quite a bit and would have loved to see him in the boyfriend role.
Overall, I liked this story and would recommend it to anyone that does not have triggers and is not looking for romance.
Jordan Poe, a homicide detective in Austin, is determined the find the fiend who kidnapped her sister Avery two years ago and has since killed several other women. Unfortunately, she herself is assaulted and loses most of her vision, leaving her dependent on others, notably Texas Ranger Carter Spencer. I was willing to look past the implausibly of some of this but I figured out the villain (and the villain's helper) early on. I know I'll be the odd one out but I DNF. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I've liked Burton in the past and expect I will in the future but this is a pass from me.
I was given an ARC of Don’t Look Now by Mary Burton so that I could read it and review it on my own free will.
I loved this book from start to finish. I will admit that I had I good guess who the serial killer was but that did not take anything away from the suspense because I wanted to know why he was doing what he was doing and how he was going to get caught.
I loved the dynamic between Jordan and Carter throughout the book and their reasons for why each one of them wanted the case. They way they did not want to work together at first but after Jordan was hurt Carter was there for her said a lot about how badly they wanted to put this killer behind bars.
This is an excellent read that I would highly recommend and I am definitely giving Don’t Look Now five out of five stars!
Don't Look Now is a captivating story that throws you right into an investigation and doesn't hold back. And even through the gruesome murders and crime scenes there's something about the book that keeps it a fun reading experience without getting too heavy. Which I really enjoyed.
I actually guessed the ending pretty early into the book but the story was written so well that there were still little things happening that shocked me and made it so I never lost interest. Overall, a great read and one I definitely recommend.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this gripping novel
you cant go wrong with a mary burton book and this one will keep you entertained right to the end
bodies wrapped in plastic with their hands tied cause of death suffocation and sexual assault
texas ranger
all makes for a frustrating time for jordan who had worked damn hard to get where she was in the police...and to have her case handed over to the rangers is enough to cause anyone to be peed right off...
but everything changes when jordan is attacked at a scene and with the outcome not looking for her, its a race against time to find the perp
considering all the victims look like her sister avery....time is running out
a great storyline and one that kept me glued for hours till i found out who the perp was
This was a police procedural with an interesting element that I LOVED. When the lead detective loses her sight, things get interesting. That aspect made this book stand out amongst the others in the field. I loved the characters and the case. I sat in suspense throughout and was thoroughly please with the ending. My thanks to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.
DNF @ 17%
I just can't continue. Maybe it's the writing style or maybe it's the plot or maybe it's the characters or maybe it's a little bit of all these three that made it hard for me to continue any further. I just find it boring and robotic. I'm sorry. I dunno if it's just me or not, but I just don't wanna torture myself anymore either way. Besides I honestly didn't feel any chemistry between
Anyway, The ARC of this book was provided by NetGalley and Montlake in exchange of an honest review. Thank you.
There is an evil serial killer on the loose. Bodies of suffocated women totally wrapped in plastic are showing up around Houston. Houston Homicide Detective Jordan Poe is the investigating officer until her boss turns the cases over to the Texas Rangers. Ranger Carter Spencer is given the case. Jordan manages to continue investigating so Carter starts working with her. There's lots of action and suspense in this book. The storyline is solid and provides edge-of-your-seat suspense. I really enjoyed this book. Author Mary Burton writes superb suspense stories!
