I love suspense, thrillers, and this one had some gasping moments for me. Jordan is tenacious. Dealing with the murders and a younger sister who is a recovering addict. When Texas Ranger Carter is called in there is some butting heads. Some blurring of lines during the investigation (not talking romance, read the book) and I love how her friends in the department had her back. I did not guess who the killer was till 3/4 through the book. I read the book for the thrilling chilling escape that it was. A book that brought to light addiction, and heart wrenching moments as a excellent detective fights for independence after a debilitating assault. A sister winning her day to day struggle with addiction and life steps up and smacks her. Well done. Mary I need to know what happens to Jordan in the future, and her sister Avery. Even a novella, please. Thank you Montlake, Netgalley and Mary Burton for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.

This book was a page turner from beginning to end. A serial killer with a close connection to a detective and her family - and a detective that will not let go until she solves the case. Until the Texas rangers step in to take her off the case. But this detective will not stop. Even when she is injured and in the line of danger. Highly recommend. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Austin police detective Jordan Poe is chasing a serial killer. He wraps his victims in plastic and they suffocate. Jordan is worried that the killer may be the person who attacked her sister 2 years ago. All the victims bear a strong resemblance to her sister. This is definitely a page turner. The suspense starts at the beginning and doesn’t let up, and in the midst of it there is also a romance. I had narrowed the killer down to 2 possible characters and one of them was the bad guy. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

An extremely enjoyable police procedural meets creepy murder book. This skillfully written book takes you deep into the twisted mind of a serial killer, the very personal life of a homicide detective and her ex-junkie sister. This is a character driven book, and you can't wait to learn more about the people in it. I especially enjoyed the strong female lead in the book, as well as her sister, who had to step up and be the strong one.

I read this book in two sittings, because I simply could not let it go. I had to find out whodunnit and why. I think the characters in this book are extraordinary. They simply work. While reading I saw it as a clear film in my head. All the small details were vivid. I really wish this wasn't a standalone, because I am sure I would grow to like the characters even more. I love their rich background stories, and I think they would have much more to give.

Jordan Poe is a tough female detective in Austin pursuing an apparent serial killer who is suffocating young women and wrapping them in plastic. During her investigation, she is the victim of a brutal attack by the perpetrator, which damages her ocular nerve and results in near-total vision loss. Jordan refuses to be sidelined by her sudden disability and is even more determined to stop the killer.

Fans of crime fiction will enjoy this quick read. This is a solid crime plotline, and Jordan is an appealing and sympathetic character. I did guess the perp fairly early on, but still enjoyed this novel. Jordan’s vision loss is depicted with compassion, and is an original storyline in this genre. I would have liked a little more police procedure and a little less romance, which felt thrown in rather than integral to the story.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, Montlake, for providing me an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A fast-paced, non-stop thrill ride! The story of Detective Jordan Poe and her quest for justice is one that is as memorable as it is high-octane. From the beginning, when Jordan is determined to find the killer who is wrapping young woman in plastic and killing them, the atmosphere is dark and forbidding. When Texas Ranger Carter Spencer takes over her case, I could feel her rage boiling over. The case has a lot of twists and turns, including a debilitating injury to Jordan when she goes to a crime scene alone. Her sister Avery is still fighting the demons of drug addiction and is a companion and helper to her injured sibling. The killer was mostly a surprise although I must admit that I did guess correctly about three-fourths of the way through the book. The clues were well hidden, so finding out that I was right was an extra bonus for me. The story itself rocketed its way from the first victim to the conclusion, with a head of steam that would not quit. I discovered a lot to like about Jordan. She is a strong female protagonist who is also independent and a worthy opponent to criminals. She is compassionate and kind to the families of the victims and she is the kind of sister that everyone would like to have, the one who believes in you and who helps you along the way. The characters were important to the story, but the plot carried them in an intriguing and intense way that just did not let up. I raced to finish this book as I just wanted all to be wrapped up with a neat bow in the end. Well, it was, kind of. There was a romantic element to the story, too, but it took second place to the mystery of who the killer was and what his motivation was for his depravity. Fans of mystery, romantic suspense and thrillers will enjoy this new book and look forward to more adventures of Jordan Poe.

Don’t Look Now is a thriller with lots of suspense and action. I liked Detective Jordan immediately. I had a crush on Texas Ranger Carter. The crimes were compelling, if not grisly. However, I did want to stop reading after Jordan’s injury. I struggled with its permanency. It’s a foible of mine. I don’t like to read books that include it. But I had to see who was committing the heinous crimes so I finished it. I use guessed correctly toward the latter part of the book who was the villain. It’s a decent read.

I don’t have to read the blurb telling me about the book to know that I’m going to read it if it’s by Mary Burton. I have favorites of course but when I started reading Don’t Look Now, I knew that this was going to be at the top of my list. The book was chilling, exciting and nerve-wracking. The characters came alive in this book for me in a way that I haven’t seen in quite awhile. And a killer so brutal it will make you look over your shoulder.

Full of suspense and action, this one gripped me from the beginning. The characters are complex. The mystery intense and with plenty of twists. Jordan is a detective hunting a killer when she is injured in a unique way. It makes for a very original take on the genre. Spencer comes across as a bit of a jerk at first. But by the end I loved his character. I guessed the bad guy pretty early but it didn't take anything away from the tension. There were several things that had me questioning. This author never disappoints!

Jordan cannot rest until she catches a criminal. Who is responsible for tragedy and sorrow for her. One thing leads to another, until Carter appears. Can these two work together and catch criminal before it’s too late.

My thanks to Montlake, Mary Burton and Netgalley.
This was not a book for me. I initially liked the characters, even though I could see a forced romance coming. Which is annoying.
Worst of all? By 23% I knew who the killer was. Soon after, I knew his "helper."
I quit at 50%. I see no point in continuing to the resolution when I've already figured it out.
Not a book I'd recommend to the savvy.
Also, while the writing was fine, this won't be an author I'd read again.

Normally I really like Mary Burtons books and maybe I read too many in a row but the whole cop/ranger working together and then becoming involved was getting really old and repetitive. The murder case side of the story was gripping and a good read but the only thing that properly saved it was what happened to Poe. It really added a new spin to the whole thing.

Another great thriller from Mary Burton. Jordan Poe is a homicide detective from Austin Texas who is investigating a murder that has a similar MO to an attack on the sister two years before. When another body is found Texas Ranger Carter Spencer is brought in to take over the case much to Jordans disdain. When she is badly injured at a third crime scene they work together to solve the case and bring is serial killer to justice. I did correctly identify the killer but enjoyed the plot and there were plenty of twists and turns in this fast paced book.

Jordan finds the similarities of the murder she is investigating to familiar. When a second body is found and another woman goes missing she starts digging a little deeper into how she found her sister two years before. When her Captain gives the case over to the Texas Ranger who came into town Jordan continues to look into the murders on the side. the closer she gets to finding the killers next victim the closer he gets to his real target. Thank you Mary Burton and Netgalley for the ARC copy. Another killer book by Ms. Burton!

Classic Mary Burton. You can always depend on well developed, realistic characters, a believable plot, and enough action to keep you engaged. There twists and turns with eye popping surprises. The skilled writing makes her books easy to read but not simple. Sometimes there is a hidden theme. This time it is Addiction. I have to say "hats off". It is clear she understands and can explain it, but, does not dramatize or stigmatize.

Jordan Poe is a detective that is chasing a killer that likes to kill women who are recovering from drug use. Her sister, Avery, is a a recovering addict and she is worried that the killer has her sister in his sights. Another winner from Mary Burton. I really enjoyed this one.

I don't know that I've ever had a first chapter of a book scare me this much! I truly had to take a minute to breathe and decide if I could continue. I'm so glad I did! This is a frightening thriller following a detective and her search for a serial killer. The descriptions are very vivid and you will need a few moments here and there to catch your breath. Love the plot and characters. Highly recommend!

I very much enjoyed this great thriller, I especially love Jordan Poe's character; her strength, intelligence and sheer guts are amazing, and her sister Avery is cut from the same cloth, both wonderful strong female characters written brilliantly.
This thriller can be hard hitting, if you enjoy Karin Slaughter then you will love this, I do and I found the hard hitting nature of the writing very compelling and absorbing.
The plot of this awful serial killer is frightening and skilled, but I could not put it down, very much a 'one more page' book!
I did get an inkling about the ending, but the writing is clever and it was a guess, I will read more from this author.
Thank you to Netgalley and Montlake for the advance reading copy.

Jordan Poe is a seasoned and dedicated detective, well thought of in her department. Her Achilles heel is her sister Avery, a recovering drug addict who is fighting hard to stay off the drugs despite the many temptations. There is a serial killer doing the rounds, a sadistic and evil man. His method is to snatch young blonde drug addicts, then wrap them in plastic with a bag over their head. He brings them to the point of death, then allows them a chance to breathe while he rapes them and then does it over again until he tires of the game and leaves them to suffocate. Mary Burton doesn't spare any detail in this area and it's quite compelling and necessary to the story. I had to read every word. Enter the Texas Rangers in the shape of Ranger Carter Spencer who takes over the case, but Jordan gets a tip off and races off to the scene where she is brutally clubbed over the head and wakes up in hospital to discover that her sight is gone.
As she is feisty and determined and pushy, Ranger Spencer allows her some input into the case, and eventually there is some understated sexual chemistry between them. There are a few false leads but they manage to solve the case and the killer is unexpected. As is usual with Mary's books, it is a cracking read and I enjoyed it.

Thanks to Mary Burton and the publishers for my free ARC.
