This book was quite different from what I expected. At times I felt like I was reading a series of social posts by simply scrolling through them, without much editing. This structure made it quick to read and at times memorable, precisely because it left flashes that could serve as food for thought. However, I would have liked more contextualization with respect to the conception of the relationship between dog and human so that a deeper and more articulate thought could be acquired, and not just suggestions that were likely to fade shortly after reading.
Inspiring, and thought provoking!
Monique has such a deep understanding of dogs. Her essays are concise and easy to read but so filled with knowledge and wisdom.
If you have a dog, particularly if you have a dog with "issues" her insight and deep compassion for dogs will reenergize you in your training and life goals with your dog!
Highly recommend!
I can appreciate what the author was trying to do here, but in reality it's just a rather boring interpretation of dog behavior and theories of what they may or may not be thinking in certain scenarios. I'm sorry, that's my honest opinion...
Thanks netgalley for giving me a complimentary pdf so that I can share my thoughts and opinions with y'all 🧡
A very boring interpretation of how dogs’ think.
I had to give up after listening to this audiobook after about an hour. Monique Anstee might have done better getting someone else to narrate it. I found the narration monotone.

Excellent Read. Filled with great tips and tricks drawn off of her real life experience.
A fabulous coffee table book and/or a gift for a new pet parent.
If you are a dog lover it is great to hear a guiding voice for different perspective on how to work with your pet.
Thank you to the author and NetGalley for letting me review this book for my honest opinion.
I thought this book was going to be a light-hearted story and didn't realize the wealth of knowledge that were held within its pages. I learned so much about dog ownership and training and enjoyed the layout of the book as well as the way Monique Anstee just laid it all out there. This book is light hearted in some parts and then very serious and matter of fact. If you want to learn a lot about dogs because you are in the market for thinking about getting your first pet - read this book. If you have had dogs all your life and just want to see what you have been missing - READ THIS BOOK!
Firstly, allow me to apologize to OrangeSky Audio & NetGalley for allowing this audiobook to archive before I could download it. I had a personal matter pop up & completely missed the deadline. Lucky enough for me, however, my library had already purchased a copy of this audiobook, so I was still able to listen to it!
I am the proud new owner of two 9 month old Miniature Schnauzer puppy sisters. As you may guess, I certainly have my hands full! As a Dog Thinketh by Monique Anstee caught my attention because it purports to offer words of wisdom for dog people. Who couldn't use a few tips when rearing puppies? In this case, I did appreciate the audiobook format because I could listen to these tips & tricks while going about my busy life; however, I must say that I think this book would be better enjoyed as an actual book, as it is written in a 365 day format. It is a lot to take in when listening to, but as a book, it could be enjoyed in smaller chunks.
The 365 day format of As a Dog Thinketh is great for anyone who wants to slowly enjoy this book and take in its ideas over time. However, I do not recommend reading it all within the span of a few days. It is a lot of information and becomes repetitive! If you are reading it over time, that's not such a bad thing because you may have forgotten some of the tips & tricks; however, when reading it in a couple sittings, you become acutely aware of what has already been covered.
Furthermore, I thought that As a Dog Thinketh would be more focused on the love and joy of dogs, but instead it read much like a training manual in small, easily digestible bites. In fact, Anstee often wrote as if she was actually speaking to trainers, whereas I think that most of her readers will be people who simply love dogs and who won't always be able to relate to some of the concepts.
Much of the info covered in this book was helpful. Some parts were unpleasant, such as the repeated mention of euthanizing dogs who don't have model behavior. Before reading this book, I did not even know that this was in practice - it never even crossed my mind to consider if a dog could be euthanized before it was "their time."
The narrator did a fine job, and read at a steady, comfortable, easy-to-follow pace.
Where do I even begin? I got my hands on As A Dog Thinketh: Daily Words of Wisdom for Dog People the very moment I read the description! I worked in the animal medical field for quite some time and have had dogs all my life, so I am the epitome of a dog person!
I enjoyed listening to this book, mostly. There was some very good stuff in there, and quite a bit of it was stuff I needed to hear. I have an absolutely wild 14-month-old Australian Shepherd who pushes boundaries and pokes at me every single day! He is not my first Aussie, nor will he be my last, but he is my “worst behaved” by far, and this book helped me realize that he is actually a diamond in the RUFF! Sorry, I had to do that… But seriously, this book made me realize that he is actually trying to teach me lessons that I NEED to learn in order to be a better handler, trainer, and dog mom.
I gave this book a solid 3 stars- nothing spectacular and 5-star worthy, but also not the worst book relating to dogs. I think 365 different things to write about was impossible, and it was very clear the author was struggling by March. You will hear (or read) something, and then hear (or read) it again at least three more times by the time you get done with the book. If I was the author and I was paraphrasing something I wrote last month just to fill the space and make it all the way to December 31st, I would change the outline. Basically, I could have listened to the first three months and stopped there because the rest of the months consisted of things I have already heard. I knocked off an additional star because the title indicated that the book would be chock full of wisdom and advice, and it wasn’t. While it was entertaining and fun and insightful, I didn’t think it was full of “words of wisdom”. To me, that would have looked more like “wag your tail more and bark less”, or “give wet kisses”, or “napping just because it’s 2:00 in the afternoon is perfectly acceptable”. And while I’m at it, the author reviewed her own book on Goodreads and, surprise surprise, gave it 5 stars. It didn’t change how I felt about the book, more so the author herself. It’s like liking your own Instagram pictures or Facebook posts. Of course you liked it, you’re the one who uploaded it or wrote it!! But I digress…
I really enjoyed this audiobook. She had some great tips, the narrator was easy to listen to and I loved that it could be listened to for short amounts of time with easy stopping points. There were a couple times were the advice didn't quite fit with what I know about dogs but Overall it was a good listen.
Great read! I love dogs and see far too many dogs who've found themselves homeless and in the local shelter where I volunteer, likely due to "behavior issues". Most have minimal, if any, training to know how to be good members of society. Owners need to take the time to develop a good relationship with their dogs and help them be great additions to the home. I love that she emphasized finding the right fit for you as well. Not all dog breeds are a good fit for every home and certain personalities will always be tougher than others. While I didn't agree with everything the author says, there is a lot of great content here.
As the author says repeatedly, one of my least favorite comments from owners of loose dogs is also "s/he's friendly". I carry dog spray while walking my little guys but I often wish I could spray the owners.
Thank you to OrangeSky Audio and NetGalley for the audio ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fascinating read - full of good advice for how to train your dog. But it was also full of ways to communicate with your dog so they know you love them. Great advice on treats, how to handle other aggressive dogs and even some tips on how to find help if your puppy has picked up some dangerous habits. I definitely learned some things while also remembering to enjoy and love my puppy just a bit more. I really liked this one.
A truly excellent audiobook filled with insights, hints and tips for dog owners and dog trainers. The book is insightful and well-paced. The narration is great, full of character and easy to listen to. I really enjoyed listening along whilst doing chores around the house and was able to easily dip in and out of it without feeling like I was losing track.
The book is formatted as daily reminders/insights taken from the authors own experiences with her own dogs and the dogs she trainers. The format makes it very easy to digest and as a puppy owner I learned loads of new information and tips I will for sure be implementing in my training with my pup.
A star lost only as I did find some parts to be a little repetitive and the constant reminders that a dog would be euthanised for bad behaviour (although I do understand the importance of the matters the author was conveying) did change the tone quite abruptly in places which I did not totally enjoy.
Just fabulous! I am not a dog trainer or anything close, but as a big dog person, I can say that I really enjoyed listening to this and that I learned a few things.
A audio book that is delivered in a relaxed pleasant tone and pace. Providing daily efforts to make dog training manageable. Giving tips that can be put into actionable information with ultimate goals of improving dog, yourself, leading to the best possible relationship between you and your dog.
Wonderfully empathetic, this book will make a perfect gift to all dog parents - especially the new ones!
I love how the entire book is drawn from the author's own experience and most of it is essential learning even for well-meaning dog lovers so that they can protect, train and cherish their darling pets.
Love, so much love xx
This dog training book is different than the average dog training book. I loved the way it is written so you can read it over a year and learn a little each day. I was listening to the audio version and choose to listen over a few days. The narrator is Rebecca Gallagher and she has a lovely voice that makes you want to keep on listening. I think that so much of the author's insight and advice could be applied to our human relationships too. I think every dog owner would benefit from reading this book. I would like to thank NetGalley for the chance to review this great book.
As a Dog Thinketh offered a lot of practical advice for new dog owners and some simple refreshers for long time dog owners. Where I didn't really learn anything new in listening to this book, I was reminded to continue to reinforce good habits and behaviors in my dogs and reward them with not only treats but with the appropriate praise. Sometimes we forget our dogs can't really understand our language and they are responding to other cues such as tone, body posture, movements and facial expressions. This book offers good reminders for communicating effectively with your dog and how to reinforce positive behavior and affect positive outcomes. The advanced dog owner may find this book a simple reinforcement of things they all ready know but it does serve as a reminder when our own human instincts are want to kick in.
The narration was also very good and pleasant to listen to.
Thanks for my advance copy.

Being an owner of two small, senior rescue dogs led to my interest in this book of daily reflections for dog people. Professional dog trainer and competitor Monique Anstee, with her 25 years of experience, offers guidance and advice to dog lovers such as myself. Whether our dogs are family pets, competitors, or both, Anstee's daily tips from January through December provide wisdom into achieving dynamic doggie relationships.
Anstee feels that dogs have unique learning needs, and each deserves rules and boundaries. Teaching them skills will help them live life with less struggles and more happiness. She stresses the importance of finding what motivates them and celebrating their differences. Trust and respect are emphasized throughout the book as critical factors in our relationships with our dogs, just as with people in our lives. It's important to respect our dogs' personalities and potential.
Topics such as puppy training, socializations, aggression, older dogs' needs, and domestic training are covered in this book that is both educational and enjoyable. Anstee serves as a role model and coach, and she shares tidbits about her own dogs' personalities and lives throughout the book. Rebecca Gallagher's narration of this audiobook added to my enjoyment. A copy of the audiobook or paperback book is perfect for dog owner's book collection, or as gift for a dog loving family member or friend.
This book was a joy to review, and I send thanks to Orange Sky Audio for a copy of this audiobook through Net Galley.

I listened to this as an audiobook and enjoyed it.
It has many well thought out and informative tips and exercises to do when trying to train and understand your dog and to get the best out of them.
It has lots of information in and needed revisiting a few times so that I could ingest everything, but I would definitely recommend this book to other dog owners and anyone thinking of opening their hone to a puppy.
First, I listen to this as an audiobook. The narrator, Rebecca Gallagher, does an outstanding job. She beautifully conveys daily advice and wisdom to dog owners. As a dog mom of three, it was enjoyable to listen to. This book seems to be intended to be read daily, with a new piece of advice set out for each day. I listened to a whole month at a time when listening and it was still enjoyable.
Thank you Netgalley for the audiobook copy.
