This is the sixth in the Deputy Donut Mystery series written by Ginger Bolton. It’s Christmas time in Fallingbrook, Wisconsin and time for the annual Ice and Lights Festival.
I enjoyed another holiday season in this quaint town. An accident on the highway brings members of the bus into town. Emily & Brent have plenty of suspects to find who threw the bus driver under an ice sculpture in the donut shop’s yard.
I love the progression of the characters, the twists and turns, and the fun. Sense of family & community are at the top of this cozy’s list of endearing qualities. I love how death does not dissolve relationships. The relationship Emily has with Tom and Cindy, her deceased husband’s parents is truly amazing. More people should love those in their lives whether it’s by blood or by marriage. Emily is blessed to have them in her life and the parents are blessed to have her.
I was given an Advanced Reader’s Copy by Netgalley and am not required to leave a positive review.
Deck the Donuts is the 6th Deputy Donut Mystery. It is warm and comforting like a mug of hot cocoa. The story is set at Christmas time and Wisconsin is seeing a generous amount of snow.
Emily and Brent are cross-country skiing when a call comes in of a bus crash. The town rallies to take in the stranded passengers as a winter storm makes travel difficult. The mystery of the bus driver and who kills him is well blended with a town serving people stranded by the crash and making the season merry.
The tension ramps a bit as suspects are eliminated. The culprit was a little surprising but well explained in the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Fallingbrook Wisconsin and Deputy Donut at Christmas time. It was just what I needed from a cozy mystery right now.
The 6th installment in this series has Emily and the town's folk offering shelter the passengers on a bus that has crashed. When the driver, who should have been in the hospital is found dead and with plenty of suspects to choose from-will Emily be able to solve the mystery before Christmas?
The only problem with this one is that there wasn't enough talk about the delicious doughnuts! This is a good entry in the series, with a holiday theme that is both scenic and, of course, dangerous. I think there was good progress on character in this one, and I look forward to see what's coming for Emily.
Its almost Christmas in Fallingbrook. A blizzard causes an accident of a tourist bus filled with kids and their parents. Brent Fyne and Emily Westhill are the first to arrive on the scene. The driver, Travis Tarriston insists that the steering gave way but the smell of alcohol is a bit too strong. Travis and a couple passengers are bound for the hospital. All the others are placed with families in the area until a new bus can arrive. Later Tracks is found dead underneath an ice statue. He's wearing a hospital gown and little else. . Why was Travis out and about with no real clothes on ? He seems to have connections to Falling brook but not popular ones. Who wanted him gone? His ex girlfriend? His current girlfriend or someone with a darker reason? Emily just can't sit back and do nothing so despite Brent's advice to steer clear she gets involved but will she get too involved and end up the next victim?
Frosty the Donut! Emily and Brent, her deceased husband's partner, weren't planing to investigate a murder- they wanted to go skiing, but then a tour bus crashed and the passengers, many of whom are unhappy, are parceled out in the town overnight. Was Travis the driver drunk when the crash happened? And what's his back story because it turns out there are a of people who could have been responsible for his ending up under the Donut. Emily's a great character- there's her 911 experience, her donut shop, her relationship with her father in law Tom, and her crime solving smarts. Don't worry if you haven't read the earlier books- this will be fine as a standalone. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. I admit to being a fan of this series and am eager to see how things continue to evolve between Emily and Brent.
The sixth book in this series is a delicious delight.
The premise of a "donut shop" cozy has certainly been done before, but this series gives it a fresh taste.
The characters are some of my favourites, well written and entertaining.
The whodunit grabbed me from the get go, and kept me guessing until the end.
I recommend this book and look forward to reading the next one.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Deck the Donuts by Ginger Bolton is the sixth book in her Deputy Donut Mystery series. This is such a fun Christmas theme cozy and a perfect addition to this popular cozy series. The covers of this series are beautiful and I love how the author includes clues on every cover. I highly recommend the entire series for your reading enjoyment. Thank you to Net Galley and to the publisher. My review opinions are my own. A lot is going on in this next in series and avid cozy fans will not want to miss this next in series.
Emily is preparing for the holidays in her popular donut shop. She is decorating the shop and creating wonderful Christmas theme donuts that are proving very popular. She has requested a donut shape ice sculpture for the Holiday festival and is looking forward to enjoying the festival with her boyfriend . When a bus crash occurs due to a drunken driver, Emily and others offer to help put up the others on the bus up for the night. When the driver somehow leaves the hospital and is murdered, no one seems concerned for him among those that were on the bus. Emily finds her house guest is under suspicion and decides to investigate to save her and find the true suspect. Soon clues and red herrings abound as Emily may find herself in danger as they leave the holiday celebrating behind to solve this mysterious murder.
This mystery kept me guessing to conclusion. Its is perfect blend of great charcters we love , a Christmas time theme and mysterious clues. I loved reading this next in series and cannot wait for the next book.
A tour bus on its way to the Fallingbrook's annual Ice and Lights Festival crashes during a snowstorm. Deputy Donut's Emily Westhill and her police detective friend Brent go to help the stranded passengers. Bus driver Travis Tarriston is admitted to the hospital while Emily brings his tour guide girlfriend Paige to stay in her house. The following morning, Emily finds Travis' dead body buried beneath their ice sculpture called Frosty the Donut. There are plenty of people who did not like Travis, including several bus passengers and former schoolmates. Paige is also evasive about her movements in the early morning hours. Is she harboring a killer?
This was another fun, tasty entry in the Deputy Donut mystery series.
I received a digital ARC from Netgalley and Kensington Books in exchange for an honest review.
I don't usually read this type of novel but I am so glad that I did. I will be looking for the other five novels in this series to complete my happiness. Set at Christmas time, the mystery develops and keeps you going and wanting to find out what really went on. The title made me choose this book and I will read it again. 5 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and publishers for this e ARC
I have read all the books in this series and I can't believe we're up to number 6 already. I was pleased to see Emily and Brent's relationship develop in this book and I also loved the Christmas cosiness of the town and would have loved even more.
The mystery itself however felt a bit predictable and Emily's involvement more convenient to the story than would be realistic.
The next installment in the Deputy Donut cozy mystery series by Ginger Bolton comes out October 26th! My family has already pre-ordered our copy because how could we resist this beautiful cover?? I really think this series has the best covers. But because my child and I were very anxious to read the next book, we are thankful to @kensingtonbooks and @netgalley for allowing us to read an early copy!
Why were we so anxious? Well, as hardcore fans who have read all the books, we couldn’t help but notice that the blurb mentions the potential of romance for the main character Emily. And my daughter and I have been waiting for something to happen between her and a certain someone for six books! So we were really excited about this one.
This book delivers so much Christmasy coziness. I loved seeing how the town of Fallingbrook celebrates the season, and how they all rally together to help a whole busload of tourists who are stranded after their bus crashes. I loved all the details about the decorations and events. And the exquisite holiday donuts descriptions made me drool!!
There are a lot of suspects and misdirections in this one, as well as some serious topics. My child and I both stayed interested and curious throughout the story.
A definite highlight was hearing about the characters we love and how all of them are doing this season. We were excited about several developments. The only negative was that my child really missed Nina, a character from the last two books. I am hoping that in future books we will get to hear at least a little more about how Nina is doing.
Speaking of future books, just as we were finishing this one, Ginger Bolton announced in her email newsletter that she is signed on for two more books! There was much rejoicing at my house!
We both loved reading this book and we can’t wait for the next!
Deck the Donuts by Ginger Bolton is the sixth book in her Deputy Donut Mystery series. This is a fun, very-Christmasy cozy mystery. Amateur sleuth Emily Westhill gets involved in solving another murder. After a tour bus crashes and the injured bus driver is taken to the hospital early the next morning he is found deceased under the Deputy Donuts ice sculpture, Frosty the Donut which was part of the Fallingbrook Ice and Lights Festival. I enjoyed reading along as Emily came up with her list of suspects and eliminated them one by one. I was surprised to find out who the culprit was. This is a great addition to the series.
I received an ARC and am happy to provide a honest review.
I really enjoyed this cozy mystery. Emily, who works in the donut shop, is the amateur sleuth, I really enjoyed her character plus she does really well. Her friend in the police department is Brent and was good friends with her deceased husband Alec. This story involves a bus crash and the people on it , Try to figure out who done . I never seem to know until almost the end of the book. A GOOD READ.
These books are always such fun to read (and make you want a donut really, really badly). I really liked that Dep was a prominent fixture in this book. The only thing I didn't like was all the snow, mostly because all the driving they are doing in it makes me nervous, but that's me!
Emily Westhill is excited for the upcoming Christmas season. She and her ""friend" Brent are skiing when they are called to the scene of a bus accident. Luckily injuries are few but the driver, who reeks of alcohol is taken to the hospital for observation. He disappears in the middle of the night, only for Emily to find him the next morning buried in a snowbank. All the suspects are known to Emily and she is puzzling out who could have killed this stranger to their town. Only, he is not such a stranger when the clues start piling up.
The usual gang is all here and in merry holiday spirit. There are multiple red herrings in this book about possible whodunits, although despite the author making cases for all of them, none of them were terribly convincing. That did not detract from my enjoyment in the slightest since it really was becoming, well that person couldn't possibly have killed him... so who are we overlooking that did? It was well worth the wait to find out.
More in this series please!
Deck the Donuts by Ginger Bolton is an excellent cozy mystery that is the sixth book in the equally excellent Deputy Donut Mystery series. I just love this series!
It was so great to visit Fallingbrook, Wisconsin again in this newest installment. Emily Westhill is such an excellent main character. Add in a wonderful cast of secondary characters of friends and family, and one has got a great read.
The murder/mystery was fun and had plenty of suspects. It was all surrounded by a festive/holiday theme and atmosphere (and I always love those!).
Another great addition that I highly recommend and I can’t wait for the next book.
5/5 stars
Thank you NG and Kensington for this wonderful arc and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
I am posting this review to my GR and Bookbub accounts immediately and will post it to my Amazon, Instagram, and B&N accounts upon publication.
This is a fantastic holiday themed cozy. The characters are engaging and the story is fabulous. It is a cleverly written mystery with plenty of twists. I was drawn in at the beginning of this intriguing cozy and I just could not stop reading until I finished it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a great cozy read.
Emily Westhill continues to stumble upon dead bodies, and Christmas time is no exception. She finds the murdered bus tour driver under Frosty the Donut, the ice sculpture, just outside the Deputy Donut shop. Solving this murder begins the sixth sleuthing adventure for Emily and her feline cohort, Dep (short for Deputy Donut).
While Ginger Bolton builds a complex mystery with red herrings, twists, and several suspects, the outcome is unexpected. Once again, Ms. Bolton's impressive storytelling skill keeps readers' visit to Fallingbrook an engaging respite.
Deck the Donuts by Ginger Bolton
Deck the Donuts is the 6th book in the Deputy Donut Series. Based in a fictional up-north small town of Fallingbrook, WI. Being from WI I was excited to read this book, also because I love Christmas and an occasional donut with sprinkles on!!
The book starts with Emily, who is widowed, cross country skiing with her husbands friend, Brent. She’d like to possibly make their friendship something more. Her husband Alec passed away and the two have found comfort in keeping in touch.
A snow storm begins. Brent gets a call that a tour bus went in the ditch near by. They both set off to help.
Emily opens her home to one of the tour guide.
The following morning Emily is sad to find her donut shop’s ice sculpture knocked over, with a dead body under the sculpture. One of the hospitalized victims, the bus driver!
What happened?
I enjoyed that the story was created in a Wisconsin setting! Being from WI makes you feel like you can fit into the story. I enjoyed the characters! This story had me guessing all the way to the end! At times I did feel like the book was a little slow for my liking, but overall it was a perfect winter read!!
Thank you Ginger Bolton, Kensington Books and NetGalley for the advance copy to read in return for my honest review!
A tour bus goes off the road just outside of town (all children are fine, some adults have minor injuries) and the smell of alcohol surrounds the driver and tour leader. Emily helps with first aid as she is nearby and takes in the tour leader because the tourists all need a place to stay in the snowstorm.
But the next morning, the bus driver is found dead in town. Why did he leave the hospital? And who murdered him? Brent is on the case, but readers of the series know that Emily is not far behind in investigating. She’s also thinking more deeply about what her feelings are for Brent and about taking her wedding ring off.
The cold and wintry setting of the book was so convincing that I was surprised to put it down and discover it is summer outside. I am ready for skiing, decorating, and hot chocolate! Going to have to reread this one while it’s snowing outside for sure.
Because of the lingering snowstorm and all the strangers stuck in the town, it does have a bit of a feeling of being trapped in a remote house or inn and wondering who is the murderer. There is no shortage of suspects and for various reasons, which keeps readers on their toes. An enjoyable cozy that will delight series readers or work as a standalone for those looking for winter-set stories.
