The story is a real page turner with several different lines to follow to reach the correct and satisfactory conclusion. I can happily recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a romantic suspense story that's a little heavier on the romance.

Kade Logan, a Colorado rancher, said goodbye to his estranged wife eight years ago, and now they found her car. He hires a PI, Eleanor Bowman to help find the killer.

This is the first of The Blood Ties series by Kat Martin. This is a first read for me by this author.

The relationship between the characters is not really believable, and the sex scenes and sexual innuendo seems to overshadow the suspense of the real story.

Thanks to Kensington Books and NetGalley for the read.

THE LAST GOODNIGHT is the first book in her Blood Ties series, and it’s set in the beautiful wilds of Colorado, about two-and-a-half hours from Denver. It’s the story of a badass lady PI and the reluctant cowboy who hires her to find the person who murdered his estranged wife eight years earlier.

The story gets off to a tense start as Kade Logan watches someone from the sheriff’s office pull his wife’s car from a lake. Right away we learn that Heather Logan was a repeat adulterer who packed up her Subaru Forrester the day Kade filed for divorce eight years before and was never seen alive again. We also learn her body was discovered two years later – obviously a homicide – and she’s buried in the town of Coffee Springs. The perpetrator has never been caught.

I am a fan of Kat Martin she is a great author. This was a suspenseful fast paced read. I could not put it down and I loved it. I highly recommend this book. She weaves a tale that makes you forget you are reading a book and you become invested in th characters who feel real. It is an incredible story of loss, plot twists, finding a killer and opening your heart.

I voluntarily wrote a review and received a copy of this book from the publisher. I planned on purchasing it and will most likely purchase as a gift for a friend.

Kat Martin is a juggernaut of romantic suspense and one of the authors who got me hooked on the genre over a decade ago. She’s a master of packing a story with emotion, robust characters, and plausible mysteries that keep me reaching for her new releases every time.

We also learn her body was discovered two years later - obviously a homicide - and she’s buried in the town of Coffee Springs.  The perpetrator has never been caught.

But the discovery of the car reaffirms Kade’s decision to find Heather’s killer once and for all and he resigns himself to hiring Nighthawk Security, a company owned by the son of his father’s friend. There’s no improvement in his salty mood when he learns the private investigator assigned to his case is a beautiful young woman - Eleanor Bowman. He envisioned an older, seasoned detective, so Ellie, who grew up on a Wyoming ranch and is familiar with all the rugged responsibilities of ranch life, throws him for a loop. It also sets up a delicious tension between them, because there’s a simmering attraction from the onset.

Ellie integrates into her undercover assignment on the Diamond Bar Ranch with aplomb, filling in for the cook who’s on a month-long vacation. Working in the kitchen has the unplanned benefit of ready access to anybody coming and going on the ranch, and it gives her an excuse to run into town on a regular basis. She’s easy to talk to, and quickly sets about building her case.

Martin sets up a convoluted, complicated whodunnit. Ellie pulls no punches in her fact-gathering process, which is nice to read through. She’s intelligent and intuitive and asks honest questions of Kade that help her piece together the puzzle of the Logans. He’s a handsome man, which makes her quick to assume the infidelity was his. But you never know what quiet struggles a person goes through when they don’t want you to, and Kade is a very private man. The more Ellie learns about Heather through her conversations with the townsfolk, the more curious she gets. Like Kade, Ellie’s partner’s infidelity was the origin of divorce. They both understand that “passion made people do crazy things.”

As the story develops, more deaths occur – cattle on the ranch, other women in town – and the tension ratchets higher with alarming speed. I can usually figure out who did it early on, but not this time. The Last Goodnight is a solid story with little reprieve or down-time. I read that Martin has published over seventy-five books, and even after all this time she’s still writing fresh stories with exciting twists. It’s a reminder that for every exciting new author I discover, there’s a steadfast storyteller still killing it.

This is an amazing read. I loved the suspense, drama, romance and all the twists and turns that came with them. I was pulled in from the very beginning and couldn't turn the pages fast enough. In most books the villain is easy to find, but not this one. I truly didn't know who it was until the reveal (which was a good one). I hope this is a series and the brothers get books too, because this will be a fantastic series.

Ellie is a strong heroine, confident, talented in her job, who doesn’t want any serious relationship because of what happened with her ex. She doesn’t hesitate to put the hero in his place when he is over-possessive, and if she quickly feels stronger feelings than she’d want to, she doesn’t hesitate to take difficult decisions necessary for her wellbeing either. She lived on a ranch in her childhood so she astonishes the hero with her knowledge, even if she must negotiate each time in order to help him during difficult times.

Kade is an alpha hero strong, attentive and protective toward his employees. He goes on and on about the fact he doesn’t want any commitment, but he is ultra-jealous of the men trying to get close to Ellie, at times behaving as a caveman. I must say this aspect of his personality, which disturbs him himself, didn’t appeal to me at all. He also feels a bit guilty because he wasn’t really attentive to his late wife before she was murdered, and that’s what motivates him to do everything in order to solve her murder.

We cannot say the relationship between the main characters begins in a good way, each of them being full of prejudices against’ the other, which doesn’t prevent them from being attracted to the other as soon as they meet. The sex scenes are steamy and well described, and at times I had the feeling the couple’s tory took more place than the suspense.

Actually, on the suspense side, we learn more about Kade’s late wife’s life before her murder, and we follow concurrently the efforts to find the person leading the attacks against the hero’s interests and relatives. The discovery of the bad guy’s identity left me a bit dissatisfied, even if the reasons motivating him were believable, but the action is quite present and goes crescendo in the last chapters.

Kat Martin usually is able to pull off a balance of romance, action and story building without one story line taking over the other,

The last goodnight realized heavy in the hot and spicy moments and less on the story that readers are trying to understand. This is book 1 in a new book series by Kat Martin so there is a lot of introductions to different characters readers will get to know as the series moves forward. The characters are likeable and with the intraromance readers who need that will enjoy this book.

Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of The Last Goodnight

Kat Martin is probably my favorite romantic suspense author, and The Last Goodnight is a good reason why. Kade and Ellie fall for each other as they try to figure out not only what happened to Kade's deceased wife, but also whether a similar fated woman is linked. Twists and turns throughout make this a hard book to put down!

A big thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is the first in a new series. This is a romantic suspense. Ellie is a private detective hired by Kade (isn't there like an unwritten rule that you shouldn't sleep with your client??) LOL. I didn't particularly like Kade. He just came across as an arrogant jerk to me. Ellie was extremely likeable. I just didn't think the chemistry was that great between them. But overall, its an ok read. The mystery was good. 3.5 stars

Looking forward to the other 2 books (kades brothers) in the series to come
Thank you Netgalley and publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.

The Last Goodnight by Kat Martin is the first book in a new series called Blood Ties. The contemporary thriller story held me right to the end and the love story made it sweeter.

Kade Logan’s wife left him 8 years ago. Two years ago they found her body, most recently, they found the car. Kade knows that he needs to know what happened to her. He hires another PI - this time Eleanor Bowman. Kade doesn’t believe really that she can be as good as she is, but he is proven wrong more than once. Eventually both give in to the HEAT there is between them! Both the threats keep on coming AND Kade still doesn’t know what happened to his wife.

The book has some really tense moments and you find yourself getting tense with each new situation. The Last Goodnight by Kate Martin was a great start to a new series and a fun book to read!

This book really kept me on the edge of my seat. It was the perfect opening for a new series. I was excited to realize that with every turn of the page I couldn't figure out who was causing all the problems. The characters all meshed together well, and I look forward to the next book in the series.

The Last Goodnight was an action-packed, super suspenseful romance. I've read a few books by Kat Martin before and I always tend to really enjoy the overall plotline and characters. The same can be said for this book. I found the mysterious death of the hero's wife and the current goings-on happening on the property to be really intriguing. Likewise, the hero and heroine was interesting to get to know.

The only thing that really stopped me from loving this book more was the pacing. There were many elements in this book that felt slow while other parts almost felt rushed to the point where I felt I had missed something and had to go back and reread pages to check. I would have liked more build up for the relationship progression (this was one of the parts that felt rushed) and so the pacing felt a bit confusing to me.

Overall, I really liked the story and think Martin is a fantastic author. She knows how to write a story that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat. Unfortunately, the pacing let me down a little with this story; but I would still recommend this book to anyone who enjoys romantic suspense!

What a ride!! This is my first Kat Martin book, but it won't be my last!! She knows how to tell a story!

Kade, a rancher, has just found out that his wife's car ( she had been found murdered ) has been found in a lake. He realizes then that he really needs to figure out who killed Heather. Eight years had passed, so he hires a private detective to help him figure out who did this so he could move on

Enter Eleanor or Ellie as she likes to be called. At first Kade doesn't think much of her abilities as a detective, but she is pretty and that stirs something in him. Pretty soon he learns that their are brains and strength behind that pretty face.

Once the car is discovered, things start happening around the ranch. Cows are killed, men are being shot and things are happening too close to home. Ellie is getting close to figuring out who is doing this to Kade, and that puts her in the line of fire.

Kat Martin, knows how to keep you interested in the story and she keeps it flowing! Definitely a 4⭐ book!!

Thank you to Netgalley, Kensington Books and Kat Martin for the eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I was very interested in the premise of this story but I couldn't get into it at all. I tried multiple times, hoping that if I could stick with it, I'd actually enjoy it, but the hero was so misogynistic and shallow, I couldn't. He's intolerable so this was a DNF for me but I haven't posted my review anywhere else and don't plan to do so.

Action, suspense, a Private Investigator, and a Rancher stir it together in a captivating story and out comes book one in Blood Ties by the fabulous Kat Martin. The Last Goodnight is a riveting romantic suspense. Kade reaches out to a Private Investigation service and is soon assigned Ellie, what follows is an intriguing story of twists and turns as they try to unravel several mysteries and a murder.
For lovers of romantic suspense this one is a must and I will definitely be awaiting what comes next.

Overall I found The Last Goodnight an enjoyable read written by Kay Martin. I found this to be a great introduction to a new series, Kade decides to once again hire a private investigator to find out what happened to his wife. Ellie certainly wasn't what he expected, but she soon proved herself to be more than capable of handling herself. This storyline is action-packed and keeps up a good pace. I would recommend this book to others.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions expressed here are my own.
