This book is an absolute must-read for all of us to better understand how the work experience is vastly different between women and men and importantly between white women and black women. As a white woman, I am learning to pay attention to and understand that not all women have a shared experience and to ignore differences of race, class, and backgrounds contributes to disparities in the workplace. This book was originally published in 2003 and has been updated with a new prologue and epilogue -- and disheartening that things have not gotten a whole lot better for Black Women in the workplace. The extensive research through over 100 interviews of women from different backgrounds and racial identity supports their analysis. I really enjoyed reading the life and career histories of different women and how the authors pulled the threads of their lives through to ideas and recommendations on actions we all can be taking to lift up and support women of color in the workplace. A timely, much-needed book!
I highly recommend this book.
