I don't know why it took me so long to read the second book in Richard Osman's series about a group of amateur detectives living in a retirement community. It just got pushed down the TBR list and I've only just (finally) picked it up.
This book follows the four characters from the first novel - Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibraham - as they embark on a mystery featuring a character from Elizabeth's past, £20 million of diamonds and a whole host of murders.
As with the first book, the writing is engaging and humorous, although there is a poignant dimension to the story too - in this case, around a knock to Ibrahim's confidence and also an Alzheimer's plotline. This makes the novel more than a simple cosy crime novel. The mystery element of the novel is also cleverly done and kept me guessing to the end.
The range of characters is interesting - I loved Elizabeth, with her intriguing past and fierce intelligence. Joyce, whose narrative perspective drives some of the chapters, is also a fabulous character - witty and sharp and learning her true capabilities as the investigation progresses. The police who work with the group are also charmingly portrayed - I like that they all have back-stories and insecurities and flaws in the same way as the main characters do.
I also listened to the audiobook, which is brilliantly read by Lesley Manville. I'd recommend this whole-heartedly as she brings out the warmth of the characters, especially in the Joyce chapters.
This is a strong sequel to 'The Thursday Murder Club' and I'll keep going with the series - hopefully in a slightly more timely way than with this book!
Another very enjoyable read featuring all those wonderful TMC characters. Funny, well plotted and great fun. Greatly looking forward to reading the next one!
I found this instalment even better than the first one 👌 probably because I was already familiar with the cast of characters.
Here Osman writes in an approachable and cosy fashion yet manages to structure all intriguing crime novel.
AMAZING as I knew it would be.
Osman has nailed the older generation mystery and I was thrilled to be back in this world with is loveable characters.
This book is like a warm hug that I just couldn’t get enough of! The pacing of this book is perfect not too fast but each chapter ends in a way that means you need to read on and those kinds of books are my all time favourite.
Sequels always have a hard time especially when they are following such a big release but this one is even better than Osman’s previous offering. 10/5 stars!
A very belated review of a book that made me laugh out loud more times that I can count.
Osman's trademark clever wit sparkles through the dialogue of the characters we have come to know and love.
This is the ultimate cozy murder mystery - although the tension manages to rachet up in places for a not so cozy atmosphere!
Osman has become an auto-read.
I’ve loved reading this book! The characters are amazing, the story is simple yet so comforting. You feel like they’re your friends. Totally recommend
I loved the first Thursday murder club - mainly because of the different characters. This is the second book and whilst the story isn’t quite as strong, the development of the individuals is fantastic.
I loved this book. I read the first one a few years ago and don't know why it has taken me so long to pick the second book in the series up. The characters are funny and quirky and I can't help but love them all. I am behind them at every step of the way, in everything they do.
I am never in any doubt that the bunch will solve the puzzle of what has happened and piece everything together.
I smiled at almost every page in this book, it won't be long before I pick up the third book to read.
Really enjoyable fast pace book with great character building. I have enjoyed this series so far and look forward to others.
I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read more from Richard Osman as I love a murder mystery
The Thursday Murder Club gang are back and as sleuth like as ever. Headed by Elizabeth, with her quick wits and no-nonsense attitude. They are on the hunt for diamonds and encounter all manner of colourful characters on the way.
This is such a brilliant series, and this second book is even better than the first one. As I've said before, don't be fooled by old age. They've had a lot more experience than everyone else, and they're not afraid to use it! The entire concept of this is so, so clever!
I loved Thursday Murder Club, so couldn't wait to read this one. However, I was disappointed, it didn't live up to the first in the series and I found myself not wanting to pick it back up. The positives are that the characters themselves really are great (and it's an excellent premise for a series!). But a main flaw is the title of the book really gives the big reveal away?! Or that was my takeaway!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for an honest review.
Even more enjoyable than the first - if Obama can keep up the momentum on this series it will become a favourite for so many. The characters are so completely loveable and relatable. Everyone has a granny or an aunt like Joyce and who doesn’t want to be Elizabeth when they get into old age? Even my kids like me to read these books to them at bedtime! Keep them coming I say
I loved this book. The plot is so clever. The characters are strong. They are well developed. Cosy crime at its best. A great book
I am very pleased to see I am very much in the minority when it comes to The Thursday Murder Club. This is the 2nd one of them I have read and I am sorry to say they just are not for me. Although I recognise they are well written, I struggle with the storyline. Really wish I enjoyed them more as love Richard Osman.
Thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Richard Osman's second outing of the Thursday Murder Club sees Osman more confident and the Club members more brazen than ever before. This one features a diamond scheme, an expansion and tightening of the inner circle, and actual character growth.
The hallmarks of a genre where time passes without passing are more keenly felt when this book is supposed to be very shortly after the first, and Chris has developed more than one might expect him to have done in a week, but this sensitively drawn caper forgives all.
Osman thrived twice, and took over an entire corner of the publishing industry in the process.
I must firstly apologise for the amount of time it has taken me to provide a review of this book, my health was rather bad for quite some time, something that had me in hospital on numerous occasions and simply didnt leave me with the time I once had to do what I love most.
Unfortunately that does mean I have missed the archive date for many of these books, so It would feel unjust throwing any review together without being able to pay attention to each novel properly.
However, I am now back to reading as before and look forward to sharing my honest reviews as always going forward. I thank you f0r the patience and understanding throughout x

I'm late in picking this one up but I'm glad I did eventually. While my rating is a 3.5 star, I did enjoy the book but I think it was maybe a bit too predictable, I guessed the culprit and a character revelation quite early on so it didn't have that exciting plot twist I was hoping for. I love the Thursday Murder Club crew, The Man Who Died Twice was a step up from the first book, plot and writing wise so I'm looking forward to picking up book 3 and 4.
3.5-4 stars, rounded up.
This was an enjoyable read. Cosy without being overly saccharine. The murder plot was interesting enough, although I had worked out quite a lot before the reveal, I have read and liked the first book in the series (Thursday Murder Club), and enjoyed this second installment slightly more. Overall it felt like a spy thriller twist on the thursday murder club.
Not a favourite for me, but original and entertaining enough that I would definitely read more from this author and series.
